The staff are friendly enough but I'd never go back. I'm used to having the equipment cleaned in front of me before I put my chin and forehead on the equipment. They did not. Maybe they cleaned it before, I'm hoping/assuming. When I left the room, i noticed that after me, the technician did not clean the equipment and took the next customer in without cleaning or wiping down equipment. When I asked the doctor, she said should and do. I noticed the doctor did wipe down her equipment, but the instrument you use to cover your eye, I dont think that was ever cleaned. My friend who went there a couple weeks prior to me going there had the same concerns and voiced it to me, but I thought it was so prosperous that I didn't believe them. In this day and age with Covid and flu season, it's disgusting that they're not trying to protect their customers with wiping or cleaning their equipment between each customer. I have been going to Dr. Rivera since I moved to the Heights 13 years ago. She has become a Mother-figure to me. I have had trouble putting in contacts for years. Maybe from impatience, losing them on the floor, even putting one on top of the other. More than once she has told me to come in once a month and she will put them in for me. She has stuck to her promise and never lets me down. She is authentic and tells you the truth. She wants to help and treats you as an equal. She talks to you not "at you." Her space is open and comfortable. There are no waiting rooms because she is prompt and never makes you wait. I never feel uncomfortable or anxious when I go in for an appointment. I recommend her highly. See the world through "rose colored glasses." Go see Dr. Rivera. You won't be sorry. read more

This is probably the worse customer service I've ever received. I tried calling and making appointment in April to get new contacts. They never called me back and even though I called them and asked what happened, they never set me up with an appointment. I came here because I was told that the DR is great. Ha YEAH RIGHT. I went by today with my prescription and my insurance. The lady (I assume she was either a technician or receptionist) looked up my info. Then she asked Where I lived. I'm not sure what this had to do with the fact that I was trying to get contacts. Then, she told me I couldn't get contacts because my insurance wouldn't cover it. Ok, I understand that my insurance only covers 6 months of the year for contacts, I can pay out of pocket for the cost to order more contacts. Well, she didn't even let me do this. She told me I should go to Wal-Mart since they would not order me any. I was completed turned off by this lady. Perhaps she needs more of an education to figure out that people CAN pay cash/credit for contacts. What an ignorant lady. The women running this place are obnoxious. They look at the cars of everyone that walks in and comment on the price. The look at everyone's shoes, clothes, jewelry. They ask probing questions aimed at how much money you make and they gossip about other patients to you during your appointment, "do you know so and so? How long has she been married? Why doesn't she have children yet? How big is their house? How successful is her company." It's obnoxious. Just do your job and keep the idle gossip to yourself. Additionally, they don't call you to let you know that your lenses have arrived. This is a terrible location. read more

Some of the staff are very nice. But Dr. Rivera is extremely rude. Last week I suggested my wife in front of the doctor that she should get lasik. Dr. said my wife's astigmatism is not severe. So my wife proceeded and ordered contacts. Today, my wife went to try out the contacts that she ordered. My wife was having a hard time putting them on, and she started with her rude comments. My wife told her, "I'm sorry, but these are hurting my eyes". Then she told my wife, "Well, I can't make what you want, just stick to glasses" Then my wife said, "I can't see them, they are too thin". Then she said, "Then you should listen to your husband, get your lasik surgery so they can cut your eyes out". My wife was in shock. How rude and unprofessional!!! Never again. We have been coming here for several years because the doctor is good at what she does. But she has no people and customer service skills. We are done here, finding another place. BE WARN! I spoke to Dr. Rivera before going into the office and she was incredibly sweet and helpful. She even invited me to go in the same day that I called to order my frames to have them ready in three days! [Christmas Miracle, right?!] Anyhow, I went in the next day during my lunch break and had an extremely sweet lady help me. She was wearing a red and rose gold watch. The rude lady at Reception made a global announcement [aka in front of the patients] stating that she was leaving soon and that her co workers should take their lunch break now. This lead to my paperwork being rushed. I was only asked if I wanted transition lenses. Everything else was somewhat decided for me. To be fair, I do need the anti glare. I just wish I was asked in order to consent instead of having someone decide for me. Since we were waiting on my prescription from a different optometrist, the sweet lady rang me up and agreed to email me a receipt once the prescription came in. I left feeling uneasy considering that I agreed to be charged without a receipt. I called TSO once I got back into my office to make sure they received my prescription. That's when the rude lady answered [the one whose early dismissal is more important than anyone else's lives] and confirmed that my prescription was received. I asked for a time estimate so I could have my receipt for my records. She told me it would be anywhere from 30 minutes to the end of the day. Not helpful. As soon as I received my invoice via email, I called to confirm and to get clarification on the details. Fortunately I was rung up correctly, but the rude lady did not want to properly explain the details on the receipt and proceeded to raise her voice and pass the phone over to a calm associate. I did not call to argue or to point fingers. I wanted an explanation for what I paid for with MY money. The calm associate cleared any of my doubt and broke it down for me since TSO receipts don't go into detail. Before I could ask if my glasses were ordered and to give a big thanks, she hung up on me. Dr. Rivera and her staff are so sweet and amazing. She really cares about getting me a perfect prescription for my very bad eyes. And then when I had a little infection, she called my prescription in without even being asked. It was the pinnacle of convenience. Terrible customer service. Totally unprofessional. Rude. I am new to Houston and was looking for a new Optometrist so I stopped by the Texas State Optical on Heights Blvd. I was in need of having my lenses switched to a new frame that I had because my current frames had become bent and could not be repaired. The lady behind the counter seemed put off by the mere fact that I had even dared walk into their store.. Not even a "hello" or "welcome"..... just a glare as I greeted HER with a friendly "hello there"... She only offered a "what do you need"... wow.... I explained what I needed and she said in an annoyed voice... "I doubt he can do that but I'll have him come talk to you"... She then said "sit there" and pointed to a chair with a table and mirror.... again...wow....umm ok? The place was totally empty...... I now know why! It only took about 15 seconds before the Lab Tech Manager/Optician came out and rudely said... "what do you need"... I explained to him that I needed to switch my current lenses to a different frame that I had with me... I explained that the lenses are the same shape and are slightly larger than the frame they are going into to allow for them to be ground down to fit the new frames. He actually, rudely, argued with me and said.. "it can't be done!"... "the lenses need to be smaller than the frame you are putting them in"..... I said...."well, sir, if the lenses are smaller than the frame they will not fit.. you cannot make the lenses larger.... they will need to be slightly larger to be ground down so they will then fit"...I showed him the lenses and the frames and showed him how easily they will fit... He then just looked at me like I was just annoying him by even being there and said "I can't do it".... I then asked if knew of a place that could.... he, very rudely, said "why don't you take them where you bought them!?"... I said... "Because I bought them on the east coast and I was hoping to find a new optometrist here".... He just stared at me as though he was annoyed that I was even there. He then said.. "nobody will do that".... I said "really? There isn't a single optometrist in the city of Houston that will swap out lenses?".... He flatly said... No. Never did he offer any sort of customer service, options, advice.... He didn't care about my business.....He didn't care to have a new patient / customer... was in NO WAY friendly, welcoming, helpful or professional. Instead.. I got rude, argumentative, unhelpful, un-knowlegeable "service" from a "staff" of people that couldn't care less about my business as a new client. I called Pearle Vision on Upper Kirby when I left their office and they were extremely friendly and helpful and didn't bat an eyelash when I asked them what I needed. They were professional and actually knew that the lens needed to be larger so it could be cut down to fit the new frame... unlike the un-knowlegable, rude man at TSO. Pearle Vision only charged me $20 for this service and welcomed me back. I will be back next week for new glasses, sunglasses and contacts. Pearle Vision has a friendly, professional staff and a much better frame selection than TSO. I do not tolerate poor customer service... at a restaurant, from a plumber, salesperson or at an optometrist office. You are in the customer service industry and your lack of knowledge of your own business and sub par service lost this customer for life.... Do not waste your time by going to this poor excuse for an office. read more

Contrary to the one star review, I and my family have had only good quality service by Dr. Rivera and her staff. This location, however, has moved to 550 Heights Blvd. Suite B Houston, TX 77007. We have been going to Dr. Rivera for a good 6+ years now. She is the ONLY doctor of any kind I have ever visited who is concerned about what her customers pay and is always looking to get you the best deal possible whether you pay out of pocket or have a eye plan of some kind. While the staff can sometimes be moody or not totally attentive, the doctor is a shining example of what should be the norm in all health practices. read more

I attempted to make an appointment on Friday, January 8, 2016 for Saturday, January 9, 2016. I was informed in a very rude and snappy tone that there were no appointments Saturday & if I were a new customer I couldn't make an appointment until my insurance was verified anyway. The older snappy receptionist also said it would be verified by Saturday & I would get a call back Saturday to make an appointment. Today is Tuesday, January 12, 2016 & there has still been no follow up. Thankfully I did not have to waste my money with this particular franchise because they were so rude on the phone. Take your business elsewhere!!! My experience was extremely unpleasant. I would have taken my business elsewhere immediately if it weren't for Sally who made up for the lack of Dr. Rivera's bedside manner. Dr. Rivera, although very thourough with the examination, is rude and judgemental. I went to this location because this was one of the few places that took my insurance and was closest to me. Never again will I come back. The type of frames a person wears should not be up for discussion as people choose what styles they like. The first thing that Dr. Rivera said to me when she took me to her examination room was, "Why are you wearing those glasses? They are so big and heavy." I had to tell her that I was there for an eye examination and not to discuss my choice in frames as that is personal preference. She went on to make small talk with me and then started asking me questions that slowly made me feel as if I were being interrogated. It was very odd. When we came out of the exam room and took me to the front desk to schedule a follow up for my contact lenses, she started telling the other office personnel all about what we discussed during the exam. I did not provide any personal information about me to her but it was odd that she did that and made me feel uncomfortable. So on my follow up visit for my contact lenses, I arrived about half an hour early. She happened to be in the lobby area and said to me very rudely, "What are you doing here, your appointment is at 12. I have all these kids I need to see and can't see you" (there was only 1 child in the office). I was shocked that she would address a customer that way. Needless to say, I addressed her in the same manner and told her that I was fully aware that my appointment was at 12 and that I am a punctual person and always arrive early to my appointments, and that I was not asking to be seen before any of the other people who were there. I also asked her since when did it become a problem to arrive early to an appointment, to which she did not respond. I got what I needed done with the help of Sally, one of the ladies at the front desk. When I was paying for my contacts she came out and told the lady who was helping me, "that little girl I'm seeing has dyslexia just like you." WOW!! How much more unprofessional could Dr. Rivera be. Not only is she violating HIPPA, she disrespectful to her employees. Lord only know what information she has put out in the open about other patients. After witnessing that, I realized that she obviously doesn't care about the service that is provided to her clients nor how she is seen as a professional. I had to write a review after reading the others as I have been in this TSO twice and had similar experience as other reviewers...amounting to just an overall lack of professionalism and customer service. I am new to the area and was staying in Houston temporarily late last year before I moved here permanently more recently. I went in to look for frames to get new glasses, but did not need an eye exam. I got "drilled" with questions (as another reviewer described) which I felt went beyond "friendly" and bordered on an invasion of my privacy...maybe just nosy, but it was very off-putting. Considering that I am a fairly talkative person myself, the fact that it made me feel uncomfortable is telling. Now that I have read the reviews here I can totally relate and get the picture of what's going on...I actually sensed that it was essentially gossip and that they woman was "sizing people up" but was trying to make myself believe she was just overly chit-chatty. Anyway, I went in today for a second time after thinking maybe the first time was just a fluke as it was only one lady I noticed/experienced this with on the first visit and they were busy (and I hadn't read the Yelp reviews yet), but I got an even worse experience today. The lady working the reception desk was completely cold and basically ignored me. She didn't greet or respond when I asked questions about insurance. HOWEVER, the other lady at the desk with her did greet me, very loudly...and she was the same lady I remembered before. She started asking all kinds of questions just as I had remembered from the first time. Again, it was inappropriate. I was there to find out whether they accepted my insurance, find out about appointment availability for an exam, and I wanted to get my current glasses adjusted and checked for damage while I was there. As another reviewer mentioned they just told me to go sit at a table and the person would help me, and I believe they said it was David. The man (David, I assume) did come out right way, but basically gave me the same "what do you need" kind of response another reviewer mentioned. I showed him what I needed and he was very critical of "whoever" I got the glasses from telling me all the things he thought they did "wrong". He had no idea how much "they" had helped me in getting the glasses and what my needs were that they had indeed met. He took the glasses and began adjusting before I could say much and he didn't have me put them on and ask how they felt...he just kind of handed them back to me like "there, done". I don't know that I can say he was completely rude, but he definitely was abrupt and not at all pleasant. Between these two visits, it certainly isn't an experience I would want to have if I were to go there for an exam and/or get new glasses so needless to say I will NOT be going back there. I don't know how the optometrist is, but the other 3 staff I interacted with were enough to drive me away. I KNOW there is better service out there...at many, if not most, places. I really wanted to like this place because it is so convenient to where I am located, but I'll drive out of my way to avoid that kind of service. I gave 2 stars only because the man did make some helpful adjustment to my glasses and I didn't have to wait, but the attitudes of the people override any positives toward me becoming a regular customer. read more

I went for an appointment about 2 months ago and NEVERRRRR will I go again. The staff was really nice but I feel sorry for them for having to put up with a disrespectful Dr. Rivera. The minute I walked in she was reprimanding the staff about insurance. Mind you, she was telling one of her staff member that she needs to collect the right amount of co pays because she loses money on these things ( ALL IN FRONT OF PATIENTS). One thing I know is you have a problem, you pull your staff to the side and explain to them the correct way not in front of everyone and humiliate them. I could not wait to leave there. Then at the end when I was checking out she insulted me by telling me that I need to call and check benefits before I go to any doctor which I did, but she was charging an outrageous amount of money for an eye exam. 2 boxes of contacts that I ended up buying at Sams cost me $130 when it would of cost me here $210. Just because you are in the Heights you do not need to upcharge on your fees. I believe she got upset because I was not gonna buy the contacts at her place, but when she told me I had to pay an extra $75 for my contacts I decided to get them at Sams. She told me well you know your only gonna pay $5 less per box and I told her "OH WELL SO BE IT". Stay away from this location. read more

Honestly, through this entire mess I've wondered if I remind the optometrist of someone she dislikes. Then I read the other reviews. I was very disappointed in my visit to TSO and, quite frankly, if my insurance would cover a second opinion I'd scrap my prescription and go have another eye exam done. I've always had a slight astigmatism and have only needed glasses for driving or watching t.v. In fact, when I got my driver's license renewed six months ago I forgot my glasses and they did the eye test without them and they said I did not need the restriction on my license. Only in the last year did I start noticing that I might need readers, and maybe a stronger prescription in general. I am 51, so I figured it was probably time. So imagine my surprise when Dr. Rivera kept brusquely telling me over and over "You're old, you need glasses. You have to wear them every day." Like I was complaining or had been in some kind of denial. I was actually neutral about the whole thing - if I have to wear glasses all the time now, fine, I'll wear them, no big deal. So I don't understand why she felt I was arguing with her about it. Seriously, this continued through the entire exam. There was also an issue I've been having with dry eyes and she wasn't interested in hearing it. In fact, she cut me off several times. Then, when I decided to comparison shop for the best lenses, frames, etc., the two quotes I received from the other stores were vastly different. So I contacted TSO to see if I could come back in to make sure I understood correctly what was included in the estimate. Instead of welcoming me back in to ask a five-minute question, my response from Dr. Rivera was only that prices vary from store to store. I'm talking about a difference in $200 - $300. I don't think it is unreasonable to question that something was not included in the initial quote that the other stores were including. The other two places I went to comparison shop actually answered some of the questions I had that the optometrist who got paid to answer them did not. I'll go to them next time. read more

Horrible. The customer service is unacceptable. I called a day before to set up an appointment for my son for the following day. They took my insurance information, SSN, DOB, and personal info and confirmed my appointment. The next day we go in at the scheduled appointment time and was told by the receptionist that I did not have one. This started this horrific ordeal. The two ladies working the reception area begin to argue back and forth about me not having an appointment. It turns out they did have my appointment in their manual calendar but forgot to input it into the computer system. Simple mistake right? Wrong. They proceed to ask me to come again tomorrow. Of course this is my only day off and I can not. They never apologize. They end by telling me I have to wait if I want to be seen today because they have other appointments. I have no choice. We wait. The louder of the two ladies asks us to pick frames while we wait. My son is older now and wanted more stylish frames than his usual. We pick a few different ones and show them to her. She immediately shut us down saying the frames would eventually slip because my sons nose was not shaped for those frames and we had no choice. She picked the ugliest frames because they are sturdy and would not slip as much. I told her I did not like how they looked. She snapped back and said "Mom who is wearing these glasses you or him?" I responded "My son is but I am buying them and I have a say so. " She then takes all the glasses he had originally chosen and places them back on the display and asked him to chose the ones he liked from the few she picked for him. My son to avoid anymore conflict picks a pair. She even tells me if I want she can just give me the prescription and I can go elsewhere for the frames. We sit back down and wait. Throughout the entire wait, I hear this same receptionist discuss with clients their insurance information, where they work, the different plan options, cost difference, advice to switch plans, etc. She even tells one customer (after he asks to see some higher end designer frames), "Wow I didn't think you were so fancy !" I thought this was completely inappropriate. After 1 hour and 15 minutes of waiting, the Doctor finally comes out. The lobby is full of people and she is clearly annoyed. They tell her that we are next and she asks why since I'm not in the system. The receptionist proceeds to blame me for the mistake. Saying" Well the mother says she called to make an appointment but she is not in the system" I was livid at this point because she took no ownership of their mistake and there was no empathy or anything. I approach them and explain what happened. The Dr annoyed at this point takes us. She does not apologize. I am at the point of tears because I am so upset that they blamed me. They made us wait over an hour. They don't allow my son to pick his own frames. They never apologize. I must say after a while the Doctor seemed to warm up and was pleasant with my 9 year old son. She gave him a thorough eye exam and was very knowledgeable. I ask her about the frames. She tells me we can chose whatever frames we want and the staff should not pick one for us. After the exam she walks with us to chose another frame. She says the frames my son originally wanted will work and that it's no problem to switch them. My son is thrilled. She tells the same receptionist to fill out the paperwork and process the new frames. This receptionist is clearly upset. After the doctor leaves she whispers to me "You didn't listen to me, you'll see!" I was so shocked. I chose to simply walk away. As much as I wanted to tell her off, I chose not to because I didn't want to be crude or disrespectful. In all the staff is extremely unprofessional and rude. They discuss clients finances and personal information in public. They don't seem to care about building new client relationships. read more
