So my personal experience was ok. Food was good, they forgot my dinner salad, but no biggie they didn't charge me. What was a turn off to me was listening to a waitress tell an elderly woman that it was a problem that she sent her food back because it was seasoned heavier than she preferred. She told the lady that next time she couldn't send it back because she had them wasting product. No doubt something that the restaurant doesn't want to be doing but sometimes u just take the hit for the sake of customer service. And to tell that to a customer is super tacky!!! The waitress then went to the window to tell the cook what she said and said she "had to draw the line somewhere," especially because it was shrimp. This is the real deal. Consistently huge greasy spoon diner food and service for decades. The is one of the few remaining down home diners of yester-year. Yesh. Needed a good burger to go and wanted to pass up the usual fast food places. Boy did we make the wrong decision. Our cheese burgers apparently had been cooked much earlier in the day and spent hours on the steamer. They were lifeless, tasteless. flat, soggy, barely warm. Ditto the french fries. I've never not eaten all my french fries but Mel's wins the prize for the worst. No taste, no texture, no nothing. Skip spending your money here. I was impressed by the fact that everything was so clean. There were mirrored art deco stuff everywhere and they all looked like it had just been polished. I had a ham scramble and decided to go with the pancakes instead of the toast and potatos. The eggs looked very lonely on the plate and kind of small. The pancakes were awesome. Since leaving the lower valley, I had to find at least one nearby diner for those late night hungers. I have no problems with this place, although some say otherwise. I get over to Yakima 3 or 4 times per year and I always eat at least one breakfast at Mel's. Great diner fare: good solid comfort food and plentiful portions. But the real attraction is one of their servers. She is poetry in motion and she is way more than just eye candy. She has a bubbly, positive personality, treating all customers in a friendly manner. She is ever vigilant about watching her tables. She's the best server I have ever seen. SHE is the real attraction here! Whatever the owner pays her, it's not enough. Went here yesterday with mom and grandma. I had pancakes and eggs and a sausage patty-the pancakes were GREAT! The eggs and sausage were also good. My mom had chicken strips but they were very small. For over $10 - not a good deal. Won't buy those again. My grandmother had turkey which was good as well. I give it 3/5 because of the chicken. For $10 anyone should be getting more. I'll get pictures out later but they were mainly breading. The staff was nice however - a plus on that. read more

The burger I ordered was very good, especially since I really like a moist burger, the mushrooms were sautéed well and the grease was almost entirely gone allowing to taste the actual mushrooms and not any grease residue. There was very little Jamaican relish on the burger which I think it could have used a tad bit more for flavor. This was not a great place to eat at all. The food was greasy. The place was not clean (neither were the other guest). There are other place to eat, this was just on our way and I love a good old fashion dinner. So we thought "let's try it." I wish we would have not. Ordered online. Picked up less than 20 min later. Poor, POOR presentation. I ordered a burger and it looked like they just tossed it in the to go box. It came disassembled. The container the ketchup came in was laying on the burger patty itself, making an indentation. The bun was soggy from laying on top of the pickles. Just awful. They should also mention that either the fry sauce or relish that's in the burger is a bit spicy. Yeah, never again ordering from Mel's diner. Don't know what the hype is about. read more

I've been going to Mel's for years, but that may change. Yesterday I stopped in for some corned beef hash, coffee, large milk, and two extra eggs. The tab was $21. What bothers me is, the hash was from a can, not fresh made. Now, I'd pay big money for home made hash, but not this stuff. The large milk cost as much as a gallon of store bought milk. I asked the waitress about the cost. She said everything will be increased after the 1st of the year. Very disappointed and probably will take my business to a better priced restaurant. read more

Who actually is the type of person to give this place a 4-star or 5-star review? Are their taste buds dead? Have they just been released from captivity in a hole in the ground? We came for breakfast, wait staff was incredibly rude, the whole place stank of vinegar as they decided breakfast time was the appropriate time to marry bottles of Tabasco sauce on the diner counter. My eggs benedict came with a hollandaise sauce made of mayonnaise and lemon juice. I was so sick the rest of the day I couldn't do anything. When the waitress offered us a pancake as it came with the breakfast and we accepted the offer of the pancake she was incredibly put out and almost angry that we wanted it. That pancake was the only edible thing out of all three of our breakfast items. 3 breakfast ended up costing far more than it should. Do yourself a favor and go to the Cafe down the street. My wife and I recently stopped at Mel's for lunch. What a disappointment! the food was marginal at best. my wife had meatloaf. it was so dense it was barely edible and had no flavor to speak of. Out of the two meals, the mashed potatoes on her plate were the only thing I would want to eat. I wont be eating there again any time soon. read more

Visited this restaurant tonight with the family and we must say we like this spot. It is a nice retro spot, the atmosphere is good too. The customer service was good and very attentive, but then again it was not busy. The food came out hot and with good flavour and juice, my kids picked the steak tips and I ate the pork chops. Met the owner too, very nice guy and another good part they do MILITARY DISCOUNT.. That's always a plus for us, we have six mouths to feed..lol. We will definitely come back again.! read more

The waitress we had (Gloria) was nothing but rude. I ordered a chicken sandwich, specifically asked for no mayo, and she looked at me like I had three heads, and asked, "no mayo, really?" I responded, "Yes...no mayo, no sauce at all." She responded, "ok, no mayo, no sauce." I also requested a soda for one of the kids in our party with lots of ice, and she goes "well, refills are free," as though the reason I'd asked for lots of ice was that I expected it to be cheaper, and not simply that I wanted to let my son have a "grown up soda" without actually getting the same amount of soda. When our food came, my sandwich came out 5 minutes after everyone else's food, and it had thousand island dressing on it. When I pointed it out, she rolled her eyes in front of me and claimed I only said no mayo...you repeated it back to me, I said no mayo, no sauce at all, and even if I hadn't (though I DID), if I didn't want mayo, what makes you think I'd want a mayo-based sauce? The sandwich was served open, and the onion rings were piled into the sauce. You'd think when she took it back and changed the bun out, that she would have simply tossed the one that was touching the dressing, but nope! There was a chunk missing from that onion ring instead. Everyone at my table said it looked like she'd taken a bite out of it (though I honestly doubt she did). On top of this, while she was gone with my plate, we could audibly hear her complaining to the kitchen staff about me sending it back. "She wanted no sauce---Ohhhhh my GAWWWWWDDDDD." I was going to complain about her to the manager when I paid the bill at the counter, but I believe it was the owner who rang me up and he seemed less than willing to listen. He was very short with me, and insisted to know whether I was tipping on my card (apparently their credit card machine doesn't work like every other restaurant on the face of the planet and print a tip line, so they have to enter the tip when they run the card...shady). Quite frankly, after talking to him for the minute it took to pay for our meal, I can completely understand why he lets snotty people stay employed in his establishment. Mel's was exactly what we were looking for at 11pm. I tried the steak tips and eggs on recommendation from previous reviews and it was actually pretty yummy. The wait staff is cool and the truckers are entertaining to look at. Beware of punk kids with nothing better to do then be stupid but all in all good late night eats. read more
