I'm in town for a convention and decided to try out Mel's Diner for breakfast. Turns out it was a very good decision! I liked their decor. It looked like a 1960's diner. The only thing missing was the tabletop jukebox controls. After being shown to my table and reviewing the menu I opted for the Taco Omelette. It was made perfectly and I enjoyed every bite. There was an abundance of diced jalapeños and made it a nice, spicy breakfast. The wait staff was friendly and appreciated my joke. Driving east on Rt. 82 I found this lunch option by searching 'food along the route' on my map. The roads were under construction when we visited with 'business access' to their parking lot through the construction site. Parking is available on three sides of the building and looks large enough to serve the Diner. A sign just inside instructs 'wait to be seated'. There are two dining rooms and counter seating. Reat rooms are near the entrance, between the two dining areas. We sat in view of the open kitchen. The host dropped menus on the table and brought over waters. We were given a nice long time to look over our menu's. Once we put them down, our waitress came over to take our order. A Senior and Kiddie menu are on the back cover of the menu. Their usual burger is 1/2lb. The senior burger is 1/3 lb. Beverages include coffee, hot tea, cocoa, milk, lemonade, soda and milkshakes. The menu is diner comfort foods: grilled cheese, burgers, liver and onions and so on. The burger is tasty and moist, served with fresh lettuce and tomato, and pickle slices. Served with fries, cheese and bacon are a bit more for each. The taco salad was very fresh with salsa and sour cream on the side to dress the salad. An excellent size for lunch. The restrooms are older and do not smell clean. The restroom I used is not handicapped accessible but there is a grab bar in one stall to assist. No diaper station. The diner has a retro decor with car details in shades of aqua, red and black. Signs of aging are present, but stilll this is a charming diner. The food was good. The prices reasonable. read more

This place was fun! We had noticed it the previous day when we got into town and vowed this would be our breakfast spot the next morning. The interior has a retro vibe with old cars, lots of chrome and neon. Our waitress was fun and engaging. This place was an experience. My husband had the French Toast and enjoyed every bite. I needed my caffeination for the day and got a cup of their coffee along with the Corned Beef Hash. Had to go classic. The hash was tasty and served with eggs and hash browns. Awesome Googie / Populuxe architecture on the outside and solid breakfast options inside. The service was a bit rough in the beginning but improved from there (coffee kept flowing). The food (basic breakfast with hashbrowns, eggs over medium, bacon and toast) was solid if nothing special. All that at a fair price level, we'll definitely be back for more! Now the real star here is the decor. If you live 50/60s decor with Googie / Populuxe and hot rod flavors then this place is a must-go, just for the looks! Easy parking on top of that! read more

We went for breakfast this morning. I ordered B&G with hash browns. Hubby had the french toast special. We both had coffee and water. The waitress was great and our food was done in less then ten minutes. That should have been the first clue. OMG- we both started having cramps right after we left. We had picked up hubby's truck from the shop and raced in separate vehicles home. I was racing downtown making sure to make each stoplight and going a few above the limit because it was bad. We both lost a lb or two in the aftermath. So- don't think I'd chance going there unless you live close by or if you need a food enema this place would be perfect!! The bill was $37 too so it's a pricy colonic. read more

I've been coming here for 30 yrs. We live in Portland, Oregon. Owner Fred is amazing and the servers are nice and attentive. Steak tips and eggs are my fave! We had a pretty big party with us. My kids had pancakes, French toast, biscuits and gravy. Hubby had the Belgian waffle. Love the 50's decor. Took pics in the Cadillac seats. Too cute to pass up. Sat down after waiting a few minutes and then over the next 15 minutes the waitress made eye contact and said she will be with us shortly but then as she finally was about to take our order she noticed someone who had just been seated and took their order instead. Went to Mel's after a few months of not going there and things have really taken a turn for the worse. We were the only people eating anything. Most unfriendly manager behind the till. We ordered the minced ham and scrambled eggs and they were almost non existent. Very small portion with tiny bit of ham cut extremely tiny. We have made the decision to never go there again. The former owner used to care about his business and now it is just an expensive rip off that is unclean. Many other places to go better than here. For $11.00 including tip not worth it at all. That without beverages. John Puccinelli was a much better owner and cared about his customers. This better than thou replacement needs to change things. We went to Mel's for their free birthday meal. The birthday person ordered salmon, salad, baked potato and corn, which was mediocre (your usual roadside dinner fare.) I ordered what was described as: Chicken Fillet Sandwich: Boneless breast of chicken, served on a hamburger bun with french fries. What I received was breaded and appeared to be fried. I was always under the impression that this meant it was grilled, perhaps I need to read menus more closely. The overall meal I had was meh. Their bathrooms are in dire need of remodeling. The wait staff is friendly and competent, which does help the dining experience here make the food go down a bit better. There are few options for 'diners' in Yakima, so there isn't much else here to compare Mel's Diner to. read more

I used to come here back in high school... which was 2000-2004 ish. Back when I used to come it was a good late night spot. Good for coffee.. good to just sit around and BS. Ive always enjoyed the food here. Its a little greasy yes, but still relatively good. I especially like their steak tips and eggs, which I suggest you try. Other than that, their service is good, the waitresses are usually pretty nice and know their shit. However, the reason why my rating isn't higher is because they changed ownership in the past few years and they have changed their decor DRAMATICALLY. It looks like tacky christmas... all year round. They have these painted multicolored rocks outside.. NOT cute. And the outside walls look like tinfoil. Its horrible. If you don't mind the decor, the food is pretty good considering. I've come here numerous times, mainly for breakfast, and they take of your very well. The staff is super friendly and the service is fast! I've main go to items are the Belgian waffle, french toast or the Mel's breakfast (with 3 pancakes). Everything is made super fresh. The eggs are real scrambled eggs and not some weird liquid mix, the sausage links have a nice snap to them and the bacon is super thick and smoky. As far as my favorite between the Belgian, the french toast or the pancakes, that's really hard to tell. It really depends on my mood for the day. The waffle is always fluffy and a little sweet, the french toast has a nice batter and the pancakes have nice air pocket and are really light. You really can't go wrong with either one! Diners are a really cool treat to go to and luckily Yakima has a good one in Mel's. read more

The food is average they need to make changes to their cooking style! The French toast tasted as if it was fried in week old bacon grease! The gravy is from a box or can. The flavor of pancakes depends on the day. If your pancakes suck you will only have the older generation coming back, their taste buds don't work as well.
