It was our 5th Day in Naples and after going to Church we came here for a late breakfast. We walked in to see how long it would be for a table and she said 15 minutes so waited outside and everyone gets a rod with a name on it like (mine was Roy Rogers) to hold to while your waiting for your table. We were then taken to our table and saw stuff like Old Characters (like Betty Boop), Easter stuff and a Giant Street Light. We were sat in the back. What we got was simple, Suzy got French Toast, Grandma got Scramble Eggs both with sides of Fresh Fruit and I had Eggs Benedict (There's nothing better than taking your knife and breaking through that to see the yolk flow like Lava from a Volcano) and we washed it all down with a tall glass of Orange Juice. My husband and I are in town with his sister and her family for a wedding and decided to stop by Mel's diner for lunch. The waiter was extremely helpful in ordering our food, making suggestions and making sure we got exactly what we would like. I had the BBLT with a cup of chicken soup and it was delicious! We noticed when we were looking at the menu it said kids get a free sundae if they behave, we were ready to pay and forgot all about that but they still came out with one for our nephew! We love coming to Mel's Diner. It is a nice relaxed spot with a huge menu that has something for everyone. They have a great breakfast and their lunch/dinner options are solid too. It is definitely kid friendly and they have awesome specials weekly too. Service is pretty good usually and they try to take care of you and get you what you need. I really wish I could leave them a 3.5 star review... 3 just doesn't seem to cut it, but I can't really do a 4... but on to the review proper to explain why! The fiance and I had a bit of a scare driving over to the mechanic earlier today and I was quite shaken up and needed to de-stress. (He was also stressing about the mechanic's estimates, so there was that, too.) At any rate, where do you go when you just want to relax but are starving and strapped for cash? A diner. Where do you go for a good diner experience around Naples? Well, we had no idea up until a few days ago. Thanks to some of our wonderful neighbors we just met last week we now knew Mel's Diner could be our answer. Now let me say two things first: one is that I am fairly certain I ate at a "Mel's Diner" once before and it was at Universal Studios. Don't know if it was the same chain or if I'm remembering it right, but that was in like 1990 so it doesn't much matter. The second thing is that our neighbors said we should go to the Bonita Springs location over the Naples one because the food wasn't as good. That matters a bit more. Due to our proximity to the Naples one as we left the mechanic we decided to give it a chance. First impressions? Delicious smell pouring out the doors, followed by a feast for the eyes of classic diner decor and whimsical license plates hanging above the window to the kitchen. Despite being packed with a lunch rush we were seated immediately and attended to not only by our awesomely friendly and down-to-earth waitress Olga but the hostess and a man who appeared to be an owner or a manager by the way he handled himself. I was so starving I didn't even know what I could drink (note to self and everyone else: they have really inexpensive beers, especially locals like Cigar City Madura. If it was a little later I would have ordered one as it was around $3.50 or so! That is cheaper than I see Bud Light and PBR at some places!), and when I fumbled to say "Sweet Tea" the waitress recommended I try their Raspberry version instead of their normal one. Both of us ordered it and were so happy we did. I rarely ever finish one drink, even with free refills, but this stuff was delicious and I think I had about four. They have great local food options which I was not expecting, but for a hot day I really wanted to try a chicken salad wrap and I am not sure if any of that was local but at that point I didn't care! We also ordered fried pickles to share, and my fiance got the item I couldn't originally decide on - the chicken parm sandwich. Prices were good enough that we felt the fried pickles weren't a big stretch, and that was great comfort food for the day. The dip was fabulous and I saved it for our french fries. Unfortunately the chicken salad wrap was mostly lettuce and carrots... and while my body can handle a little bit of greens I get very ill if I have too many. The half I started to eat only had one scoop of actual chicken salad in it (I took it apart to check) so my fiance ended up switching lunches with me so I could eat. This was the ONLY bad part of the experience we had there. My fiance wanted me to say something, but I kinda hate being that person who says something and it really isn't their fault I can't eat that much lettuce... and while I would have loved more actual chicken salad in the chicken salad wrap the GIGANTIC chicken breast on top of the chicken parm ended up being more than enough for the two of us to share. Other than that, even when his fries were forgotten about Olga had been so attentive otherwise that we even forgot they weren't delivered yet. She noticed us just looking around and thought we were looking to her about the fries, and just had us laughing about the situation as she immediately said something and jumped up to fix it! She was so friendly and attentive without being annoying, based on her service alone we'd come back here. I'd also like to assume that was just one fluke with the wrap (or maybe that is why our neighbors told us Bonita was better) and hope they fix their recipe ratios if that is their usual way. Their prices were great, their deals were great, the service was great, everything was clean, and you felt like you were stepping back in time... everything was homey, friendly, and welcoming. The food was mostly excellent for a diner, although that chicken salad wrap was very sub-par for any of the diner experiences I've had. 4 stars for service, 2 for the wrap, 4 for everything else.. so... 3.33 repeating for the score? Basic diner style and food. This is place is your pit stop for quick, basic sustenance (nothing gourmet, if that's what you're looking for). The service is pleasant and quick enough. The food is average in portions, quality, taste, and price. Example: My grandfather ordered a simple cold cereal with banana and milk. The milk came in two 3-oz portion cups with lids and was room temperature. There is no 'wow' factor here, HOWEVER, the nostalgia of the old school diners and the wonderful personality of the hostess (I couldn't remember the spelling of her name) made this a pleasant enough experience for a quick breakfast on a Sunday morning. read more

My family dines at Mel's frequently--we alternate between this location and the one in Bonita Springs). Although we prefer the Bonita location for the ambiance, the food is consistent at either. Mel's is your run-of-the-mill diner, that serves up quick, cheap comfort food. The menu is vast, and it contains a fair amount of healthier options (if that's your cup of tea), but nothing's ever really jumped out at me. You can get the same foods at any other diner-style restaurant (like IHOP, Denny's or Perkins) ... and while I prefer to support Mel's because it's privately owned, I'm a 24-hour breakfast eater--which, unfortunately, is the one thing they DON'T have on the menu. Sadly, breakfast is not served all day, but stops at 12/1:00 on weekends. All-in-all, it's a diner. If you're looking for a laid back eat, Mel's is a good choice. read more

Excellent service! It was entertaining to sit at the bar to watch the cooks and servers. If you have long legs, beware. It's a tight fit as you are not able to move the seats. All of the food, which was being delivered to the patrons, looked amazing. My chicken soup did not disappoint. My fish with key lime sauce was amazing. It was very tender, had an excellent flavor plus one small bone. The servers joked with the regulars which was fun to watch. Overall, great place for a good, non-fancy meal. read more

Two thumbs down for surabout 11:30 AM ordered some breakfast items. They brought oatmeal that was more stiff then mashed potatoes with atainer of milk to mix into it. Weird. Ordered eggs over easy And the sausage patty they came out was like a hockey puck. We both ordered hashbrowns which where real low level like a two out of 10 reading. It was like an amateur cooked it in the kitchen with a potato strips we're still raw but yet cooked type of taste. meanwhile the waitress keeps making toast for customers but smells like they never cleaned out the crumbs under the toaster every time she's turning it on the restaurant reeks of heavy carbon it was hard to breathe. Let me begin that I love diners. And I even like the food an a # of Mel's diner. I'm only giving this a 2 Star because of the issues at the one in Naples FL. When we go in, I ask specifically for a table (and then add not a booth). The manager points to a folding chair. This is a Tues AM at 10:00 AM. Then he walks us to a booth he thinks will work. Hubby does not fit. Then he walks us to a 2nd booth and it works. Why in world would he do this? I pointed to another set up (booth along far wall, free moving table and chairs on outside), but he wouldn't give it to us. Bottom line, I WILL NEVER RETURN TO THIS MEL'S. Manger, seater/host needs training. This is the 2nd time this has happened to us. Too many options in this area to put up wit this obscene service. read more

Being a former NYer who moved to Florida several years ago I have come upon many restaurants here that call themselves a 'diner' expecting something close to what I was used to in NY or NJ - never found that until now!! For selection, quality and especially value Mel's can't be beat. My husband had the "all you can eat fish fry" that he really enjoyed to the tune of two or three plates all for just $9.99 and came with fries and coleslaw. I had an open faced turkey sandwich with real mashed potatoes and homemade gravy. Large portion especially for just $7.99 and really delicious. Service was excellent; our waitress was named Barbara and she routinely asked us if everything was alright and if we wanted anything else. She was very pleasant and is a very hard worker. I love key lime pie so I got a piece to go. Another great value at $2.99 and it was a large slice. Best of all it was delicious. So very creamy. I highly recommend Mel's. We were just visiting in the area but I see they have other locations. Glad we found this place on Yelp. Definitely will go again. Enjoy!! read more

I tried this place once and it was mediocre at best. I decided to try again through GrubHub and Mel's canceled the order. After waiting for delivery, I get an email with no explanation other than Mel's cannot fulfill the order- no other options offered. Everyone gets a second chance, but that's all. My favorite fried chicken in Naples - wish they had it as a special every day. Sweet mini biscuits and coleslaw, I could eat a plate of each. Tasty desserts, free refill on drinks. Wife and I have been vacationing in Naples for last10 years and Mel's has always been one of our go to places. Normally good food at reasonable prices. Stopped in yesterday fit breakfast and was completely disappointed. I had two eggs over easy, grits, and biscuit. Eggs were cooked well, but smallest eggs I have ever been served. Grits were barely warm and tasteless, biscuit was cold and stale. Wife had high stack of buckwheat pancakes and bacon. Bacon was fine,but pancakes were flat and flavorless. In fairness, coffee was excellent. All of this mediocrity for $25. You would do better to eat your breakfast at McDonalds and save Mel's for dinner. read more

If I could leave no stars I would. The place is dirty and greasy feel. We went to this Mel's because it is closer that the Mel's we are used to going to. Big mistake. The wait staff was slow. We asked for a cocktail which he was listed on the menu and they waiter said never heard of it. Later he came by and said show me on the menu. We did and he said oh ok I will get it. My son ordered the tuna salad melt. He was eating and found a clump of hair. We showed it to the waiter and the waiter brought the plate back into the kitchen, came back with the same plate and told us it was part of the ingredients and left the plate in front of my son. Of course my son didn't eat the the sandwich. The waiter brought us the check and never apologized or acknowledge the issue again. I will never go back. read more

We tried this diner for the first time for a nice breakfast omelette. We were sorely disappointed. The coffee was totally undrinkable. It tasted like nothing more than brown colored water. The omelette had hardly any of the filler ingredients inside and somehow the provolone didn't even have any taste. The only part of the fruit bowl that was edible was the pineapple. Great friendly service and has a menu that offers all the diner standards, but all the food seemed old, reheated, dry and really worth about half the prize paid. I won't be back. This place has the best value for the money. You have to go here!! Our family has already ate here twice in the 4 days that we were here. I ordered the surf & turf for only $16.99. The filet was cooked perfectly throughout. Very tender. The lobster was delicious and tender. The salad with the strawberries, goat cheese and almonds was amazing!! Margaritas are only $3.
