The food here is incredible. Large portions and prices that are refreshing to see in this economy. I was visiting from the south and had given up on finding a solid, delicious dinner until I lucked up on this restaurant. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Service was great and the restaurant was pleasant and filled with natural light.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] We didn't have a reservation but there was no problem to be seated quickly and served promptly. Took off one star because a member of my dinner party had trouble returning their side of collard greens due to it being too salty. A staff member who wasn't our original waitress, pressed them to choose another one. So I'm not sure if this restaurant allows you to take an item off the bill if it misses the mark but I'd still return in a heartbeat.
My friend and I visited Melba's for her birthday and it was amazing! Melba's menu serves up Southern comfort food classics like fried chicken and waffles, catfish, short ribs, collard greens, mac and cheese, candied yams and sauteed spinach. The restaurant's website says "dining at Melba's is like coming home for dinner, whenever you're away from home." We ordered 2 "comfortizers:" Melba's Hand Cut Sweet Potato Wedges and Country Catfish Strips. My friend ordered Melba's Signature Chicken & Eggnog Waffle for her main dish and I got the Signature Southern Fried Chicken Sandwich. We also ordered a side of Creamy Tres Mac & Cheese and Homemade Lemonade. The food was delicious. The chicken was tender, succulent, and juicy. I really really loved the chicken sandwich. I wish I had more to eat when I was done. Our waitress, Tatiana was friendly, helpful and answered all our questions. She even brought my friend a free piece of red velvet cake for her birthday, which was extra sweet. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Melba's atmosphere is unassuming as one feels welcomed and at home.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] We can't wait to go back!

The food is the real spotlight. The smothered chicken with collard greens and mac and cheese is a must. The yams were perfectly done but definitely on the sweeter side, so just something to keep in mind. I already know I need to come back to try the fried chicken next time. Been wanting to try Melba's for some time now and finally got a chance to over the weekend. This is down home good soul food! My faves included the collard greens, mac, and catfish! Everything was seasoned perfectly! Service is also fast and friendly.
sooo good! Work has me up in the Bronx, and on my break, I came down to Melba's. The server was nice enough to give me a sample deviled egg because she described the filling as an "acquired taste." My taste is acquired, baby, so I ordered an entire plate of 'em. DEE-LISH. And some good old garlicky spinach for obligatory iron intake. I will be back.

The brunch is where it is at! The egg nog waffle and chicken wings were absolutely amazing! And the grits and shrimp, the shrimp wasn't over cooked. The fried catfish wasn't overfried or to much batter. The sangria is strong but it is so good! And the sweet potato isn't too sweet but prefect spiced

The food was served hot and everything from the appetizer to our main dishes were freshly made. We ordered: -cheeseburger sliders -oxtail with mashed potatoes & collard greens -bbq short ribs - with Mac n cheese and potato salad -bbq short ribs with French fries & Mac n cheese We will definitely return to try more of their delicious dishes. As 2025 winds down, I recognize Melba's Restaurant, along with Shaw-nae's House on Staten Island as the Queens of Southern Soul Food in the five boroughs. It's an increasingly competitive genre in NYC, with Amy Ruth's, my previous favorite yielding only slightly with its incredible Beef Short Rib and waffle choices and the venerable Charles Pan Fried Chicken still leading the charge with his fried chicken. Competition is fierce and there will be people who legitimately bring Make My Fish to the conversation as well. What you get at Melba's is a diverse menu with all your favorites and each of them looks picture perfect. Have you ever seen better looking fried chicken or candied yams...? I'm waiting... Nothing is oversalted or overcooked. Case in point: the collard greens, made with smoked turkey and well seasoned, without the sodium penalty. The chefs are paying attention to the details we crave: Mac n Cheese with perfectly cooked elbow macaroni then baked with a multi cheese combination to a crusty top and edges with cheese pull. We see Melba's preparing the side dishes with great care, tastefully, and looking as good as they taste. I have not had the fish here, but I have recommended vegetarians who are pescatarians as well, and those individuals have put Melba's on repeat. The beef short ribs I ordered here bow down to those at Amy Ruth's. The beef short ribs are very good, but the cut was not trimmed of excess fat, leaving these savory beef short ribs short of those at Amy Ruth's. Yet, the story doesn't end there at Melba's. I have had their fried chicken and it is superb down to the bone, tasting like they brine the chicken. It's so appealing to look at when it arrives, matching the picture perfect candied yams, a combination that must be experienced on a plate to be believed. The crispy chicken here is matched by the chicken and chicken sandwiches Melba's serves up at Grand Central. If chicken doesn't rock you, try their oxtail and you'll experience all the tender flavors for which oxtail was recognized by our people until its broad appeal pushed the price of oxtail at the supermarket. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Melba's is like a lot of Harlem institutions on Sundays: jammed packed with after church brunchers. It's a mark of its appeal, like Amy Ruth's, Sylvia's and Chocolat, but better.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Service is good from my experience. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Atmosphere is very nice at Melba's, but bested by the wraparound warmth and intimacy of the smaller Shaw-nae's House.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] I realize this competitive genre will generate some controversy and some will disagree with me. If so, I am open to your feedback and reactions. For me, Melba's has an extensive menu that showcases great care by the chefs and it shows on the plate and palate. Melba's shares the Crown with Shaw-nae's House and you can dine here with confidence, experiencing the best of Southern Soul Food in Manhattan and across the five boroughs. 4.5 Stars!
Decided to eat at Melba's during my first trip to NY and it did not disappoint. The food was delicious and perfectly seasoned. Our waiter, Kenny provided excellent service and kept us laughing throughout our visit. I've already recommended Melba's to family and friends and would definitely revisit the next time I come to NY.
From being greeted by the host of the evening (I think Kyla) to the food and drinks-amazing!! We didn't make a reservation, and I do not recommend doing that; we made do by sitting at the bar but if you want and table, make that reservation. The food was amazing and came out pretty quickly! Everything i have pictured tasted really good. The short rib had some fatty parts but was falling off the bone, the greens were perfectly cooked, and mac n cheese had a nice cheese pull and a crisp on top. The yams were-get them! The chicken was juicy and had the perfect crisp. My partner is from the South and approved! My only qualms was the menu saying "peas and rice" lol Now let's talk about the drinks Kyle mixed! So so good. Had the rum punch and I tried the coquito. Both had a good alc pour and were tasty. Thank you Melba for a great meal!
I took my brother and his lady to Melba's for his birthday on 09/04/25! Walking in you will notice a Club vibe as you hear soulful sounds of different R&B artists. Located a few feet from the entrance is the bar with bartenders that are eager to craft your favorite libation. The Black and White decorum presented elegance and sophistication which made the room less busy yet attractive. The chair I sat in was not sturdy, so I switched it for another. I did notice that there are two sides of dining, so it seems like it holds a lot of patrons. The service was great, and the staff worked as a team, each team member performing in their roll effortlessly. We finally ordered a huge spread. Our apps were spring rolls, calamari, and crab cakes. The crab cakes did have a robust flavor as if it were real crab meat used and not artificial. Calamari had texture. I liked it because I was able to chew the entire ring completely. The spring roll were pretty good but a little too greasy for my stomach. Everyone ordered the Mac N Cheese, my brother and I agreed it was almost as good as moms if not better. I place mother's dish above this dish, but I am exercising familial bias. I had a medium well salmon that turn out to be very delicious, I made an excellent choice. The greens had texture and was a bit chewy for my liking. My brother's friend had the catfish which she did not enjoy at all. She's from Louisiana, so the cooking styles will vary. My brother found the cod to be very good, but he wasn't a favorite of the potato salad which he rated as the least. I did taste the potato salad, and it taste pretty good to me, I can only say that preference to play an important part of any dish. I am most definitely returning for another dish. We did see another person eating oxtails and he was shaking his head as he enjoyed his dish.
Melba's is spectacular full stop. We went here for my Nana's 80th and it did not disappoint. We started with the fried calamari and the catfish nuggets/bites. Catfish nuggets/bites were perfect, calamari was tasty but i prefer it in smaller pieces i think. Next our entrees (they come with two sides each which is nice to see in today's food scene) Oxtails with Mac & Cheese, Short Rib with Garlic Mashed Potatoes and Collard Greens, Fried Chicken with Mac & Cheese and Collard Greens, Fried Catfish with Mac & Cheese and Collard and the Chilean Sea-bass with the Mac & Collards. Everything was delicious it takes a good cook/chef to dish out good oxtail and these were great! The short rib was tender and flavorful. The Catfish and Fried Chicken were hits as well as the Chilean Sea-bass. Chef really did his thing here go support this storied restaurant. We had a great time. Thanks!

My daughter and I dropped in for brunch two Saturday's ago. She ordered the fried catfish sandwich and it is amazing!! I was so mad I didn't get it. She also had the Arnold Palmer, which was great. Comes with fries which were good. I had the oxtail, with a side of garlic mash and Mac n cheese. Yes! Lots of carbs, don't judge me! lol The oxtail were pretty fatty and fell short in flavor, I also wasn't impressed by the sides. My drink, sexy sangria was delicious, strong and the service was A1, Brian was great and so was the server. Sampled the hot sauce, very good. I highly recommend making a reservation. The restaurant is small and very crowded, and we overheard a walk-in wait time of about two and a half hours. [[HIGHLIGHT]]The space and volume seemed to overwhelm the staff at times.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Service was friendly and welcoming but also frazzled and disorganized. We never received our appetizer until we reminded them, and our drinks (sweet tea and lemonade) also had to be requested again after a very long wait. To their credit, they did pack up the crab cake appetizer to go and removed it from the bill, which we appreciated. The fried chicken, mac and cheese, and yams were all served on top of each other. If you dont like for your food to touch, this place will be a nightmare for you. I ordered fried catfish, collard greens and potato salad. The fried catfish was served swimming in collard green juice (there's a picture of it). It was also surprising that you only get one piece of catfish, which felt underwhelming for the price, especially since it was soggy. The potato salad was served in a small separate bowl, which is typical in many Southern restaurants for ALL side dishes. The mac and cheese had good flavor but the cheese wasn't fully melted. The yams were dry and not very sweet despite the menu description. The collard greens were on the sweeter side, which may work for some but wasn't my preference. The potato salad the only thing that was solid. Overall, it felt overpriced for the portion sizes and execution. The bartender seemed very skilled, and the drinks we saw being made looked great, though we didn't order any. After the long wait and missing appetizer, we skipped dessert and went elsewhere. [[HIGHLIGHT]]The bathroom also needed attention and was not well maintained AT ALL! Ew[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] [[HIGHLIGHT]]The restaurant is very loud which didn't bother me at all but an FYI.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] [[HIGHLIGHT]]It is also handicapped accessible and kid friendly.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] I really wanted to love the experience, but it fell below expectations in terms of service, cleanliness, and value. The Prince and NYC's Harlem Chicken & Waffles This is a true story. Once upon a time, there was a Prince who had never tasted chicken and waffles. His beloved--a true American damsel--decided it was time to change that. She brought him to what she believed was the best spot in all of Harlem, New York--the historic neighborhood where this unlikely yet iconic pairing first rose to fame as a post-performance meal among jazz musicians in the 1930s. And so I came to eat chicken and waffles because first, I love stories. And second, I'm curious. I had to ask the staff if the story were true and if true, did the Prince ate all of his waffles and chicken. The food was terrible I ordered the Jamaican oxtail with the Mac and cheese and their potatoe salad. Never again. Collard greens not tasty either. I ordered drinks a sweet tea and lemonade that came thirty minutes later which the waiter apologized for. That was served warm and it had ice in it. [[HIGHLIGHT]]It wasn't that busy in there[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] . [[HIGHLIGHT]]Had us sitting on top of one another.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Didn't finish my food at all the Mac and cheese was gooey and cheesy the way people like it. The oxtails wasn't Jamaican at all. Where was the scotch bonnet and the seasonings at . The msg network recommended this place. Waste of money and time . I didn't even take my food to go it was so bad . Came here after the Uncle Nearest Juneteenth crawl in Harlem around maybe 10 ish after the crowd had died down. Ample seating inside woth a full bar. My friend and I got a seat in the corner booth we ordered the spring rolls which were delicious. Oxtail for $30 had us curious, it was good but a little too sweet; side of mac and collards were good although i wanted rice n peas. My friend said the rice was good. We also wanted to try the catfish appetizer but didn't come out in time. One of our party member had it as a meal and it looked good. I've been here before and wasn't too impressed with the food but this time it was good. Also the uncle Nearest drink was good but a little too sweet. I would reccomend them for soul food options in the area and would definitely return for those spring rolls and catfish. read more

We stopped here on the snowy day and I am glad we did. We were immediately greeted and sat fast. Our server was super helpful and nice. When you go you HAVE to get the eggnog waffle and fried chicken. OMG as a girl from the south it soothed my soul. This is some of the best fried chicken I have had in New York. My boyfriend rated the chicken tenders a 8/10. Overall the food was really good. I would skip the Mac and collard greens but the catfish was really good! I will be back! read more
My party of 3 came here for a late dinner. We didn't have reservations but was seated fairly quickly. All drinks were tasty, but I ordered the strawberry Hennessey and it was soooo good, better than I thought it would be! Food was spot on in flavor and portion size. Melba's is the comfort food capital of New York as far as I'm concerned!!! I first heard about Melba's while watching the Great Soul Food Cook-Off, and when I heard about her famous chicken and eggnog waffles I knew I had to go. Right when you walk in, you're faced with the gleaming bar counter, and Melba's many culinary awards displayed high on the shelves! The restaurant itself is beautiful and bright inside, yet very cozy and always packed. I'd definitely recommend getting a reservation a few weeks in advance. At Melba's, the food is mouthwatering, and always perfectly prepared. The last time we went, my sibling and I both got the Southern Fried Chicken with dark meat. The drumstick and thigh practically fell off the bone, and were so moist and tender. The crispy battered skin was so thin yet seasoned to perfection!! Every entree comes with two sides, so between the two of us we picked an eggnog waffle, the A$AP yams, momma's potato salad, and the tres mac and cheese. This was the perfect amount of food for the two of us, and provided a great variety of sides to try. We ended up loving everything. The combo of juicy savory chicken paired with the eggnog waffle and strawberry butter is absolutely heavenly. The baked mac and cheese made with mozzarella, cheddar, and pepper jack (yes I bought the cookbook) is the perfect texture and has such a distinct and addictive flavor. Their potato salad is made with a mayo base and some mustard, relish, boiled egg, red pepper, and a sprinkle of paprika- even my sibling who doesn't like potato salad loved the textural contrasts and great flavors of this one. And the A$AP yams..... I'm used to very gloppy candied yams that resemble pie filling, topped with marshmallow and brown with cinnamon. These were so much better; they melt in your mouth and have such a powerful sweet and aromatic flavor, with none of the extra fillers or trappings. I nearly ate the whole plate. Overall, Melba's has my heart and will forever be my favorite place to get comforting soul food in Harlem. On Sunday May 18,2025 I had an early appointment in Harlem with my granddaughter and favorite adventure buddy ; she wanted to have brunch! So I found Melba's, we were warmly welcomed at the entrance by the sweetest little lady named Chris. We were promptly seated and the waitress mentioned that a large party was coming so she sat us in a quiet corner, all this good treatment before we tasted anything! Our waitress Olleigh B. brought our menus and we chose chicken and eggnog waffles(very good) Catfish strips were fresh & crispy just delicious ! And a creamy Tres' Mac & Cheese to go, we drank sweet teas! It was a delightful experience and I will be back the place is clean and I saw a bartender making drinks that looked great ! Melba's was delicious! I'm from the with and the mac and cheese was amazing. My lunch plate was served with very nice portions. The oxtails were seasoned well and fell off the bone. The greens were just okay. I dropped a star because although our server was super friendly, we waited about 10 mins before our drink order was taken and another 10 mins before we actually got the drinks. read more
Known from Food Network but, beloved in Harlem. Melba's is known for their warm comforting soul food. They did not disappoint on this visit. While here I tried the country catfish strips, the oxtails and braised short ribs. The catfish was fried and seasoned to perfection! The short ribs and oxtails were tender and juicy. The pricing was definitely worth the portion size. I washed my meal down with a Melba's HIT! Harlem Iced Tea. Sooo boozy and delish! Our service was fast and friendly. There's no denying the quality of the chicken here--it's exceptional. Perfectly fried with a shatteringly crisp skin and juicy, well-seasoned meat. Truly one of the best fried chicken on waffles I've had! The waffle, however, left a bit to be desired. It was kind of generic considering how it's supposed to have eggnog, but I did not taste eggnog at all. The strawberry butter was a nice touch, though it tasted almost exactly like strawberry cream cheese you can buy at the supermarket than something truly special. Overall, I enjoyed the dish, but at $24 for a single waffle and two pieces of chicken, the value didn't quite match the price--aside from the standout chicken that is! read more
Went in for the rave reviews for a solo lunch today. I'll preface this by saying I'm not a big southern food fan in terms of fried chicken and waffles or meat dishes and I also came in around 3pm so probably towards the end of the lunch rush even though there was a full dining room so I just got the chicken tenders appetizers and a side of the Mac and cheese and a lemonade. Unfortunately I was a bit disappointed by the food. The chicken was a bit dry, the Mac and cheese was very overcooked and nothing more than you'd find at a supermarket buffet flavor or texture wise. The lemonade was extremely sweet and I had to water it down. The service was very good though. I was seated promptly and professionally, my server was very nice and attentive and the food did come out fast. Ambiance also nice. Nice decor, very chill and comfy in the corner booth table. Nice music playing at a good volume. Prices were on the high side. Overall it was a perfect place to rest my feet after volunteering at the food bank and I had an enjoyable time just wasn't very impressed by the food. read more

I went on a Sunday early afternoon with a friend and it was packed but we were quickly seated. The music was amazing with a mix of 80's-90s RnB, which definitely set the tone. Though it was busy, the wait staff was very attentive. I was pleased with the service! I had the calamari for an appetizer and it was very crunchy and flavorful. I'd give it a 4.5 out of 5. For my entree, I had the braised ribs, mac and cheese, and ASAP yams for my entree. The mac could've been more creamy. The ribs were tender and falling off the bone. The yams were definitely sweet. I'd give it all a 4 out of 5. If the Mac were creamier, it definitely would've been a 5 out of 5. For dessert, I had the sweet potato pie. It was moist and thick and it was delicious. The feeling was seasoned well and tasted like my grandma's sweet potato pie. I'd give it a 5 out of 5. It is a little tight on the inside but it's definitely a must try for some good southern comfort cuisine. read more

We went here off a few recommendations from a few peoe after we left the taping of the Sherri Sheppard show. The service was great from the time we walked in. We got there probably after the lunch crowd and before the dinner crowd so it wasn't overly crowded at all. When I say everything was delicious. The smothered chicken with the greens and mac and cheese was so good. It was like I was back at my grandma house. Someone got the salmon and said it was delicious as well. The oxtails were falling off the bones. The drinks were good as well. If in NYC and want some good southern home cooked food then this is your spot. read more

Their pineapple coconut cake gets an A+ rating from me.

Pre COVID-19, yes. Right now, they do for outdoor seating ONLY.
Are greens and potato salad available at brunch?
No not at brunch only at Dinner time
There's no prices on the menu; I hate when restaurants do that. Can somebody give me an idea of the prices? Thank you
