Melbas Comfort meal - eggnog pancakes, chicken fingers, fries
    Samantha J.

This spot is easy to find and in a great location inside Grand Central, especially for travelers or anyone passing through. I've been a few times and actually noticed it when it first opened. I hadn't tried the Harlem location before, but I was happy to see this one here. I really liked the chicken and waffles--it was cute, flavorful, and not too heavy. The butter and syrup gave it a nice culinary touch. I wasn't a fan of the fries, so the second time I ordered without them. I also tried the mac and cheese, which was good, and the potato pie, which was okay. Overall, the food was prepared well, and the location is a big plus. Staff are super nice. It's right near Magnolia Bakery, Shake Shack, and the escalators by the 4/5/6, S, and 7 trains. A solid addition to Grand Central, and I hope it sticks around for a long time.

I'm glad I can get catfish whenever I'm craving it, but I just wish the sides were more consistent. The mac and cheese is decent, and the candied yams are way too sweet. The collard greens are good, especially with hot sauce. I also wish the menu were more detailed because I'm always confused about how to choose or customize my food. And I wish I could order just a side of fish because two pieces aren't enough. Next time, I'll try the chicken.

Was in a pinch for time and noticed Melba's had no line, so I opted to go there. I ordered a side of Mac and cheese with a chicken thigh. This mac and cheese was everything I needed! Cheesy, flavorful, and perfectly crisp at the top. Here's where things go left. The side of Mac and cheese was small as can be for $9!! And one piece of chicken was $5!! I should know to expect this at GCT but it still felt grossly overpriced.

I absolutely love Melba's--the one uptown and up until yesterday, the one in Midtown. First of all, I had some type of stomach problem after eating the food last night. Second, for the first time ever the sweet potatoes were so dry it was unpleasant. I went and decided to buy a slice of red velvet cake, and I am truly so disappointed. It tastes like some type of oil mixed with the smell of other cooked foods. I forced myself to eat it because it wasn't cheap and I bought it but I had to stop --it tastes awful. I do not know if I'll be back to this location, but as I said in the beginning, I'm a long time lover of Melbas. I would suggest some kind of quality control go on at the Grand Central location.

    Not what I ordered

Ordered two meals made it clear I wanted two meals. Cashier ignored me and charged me for one meal and two sides. When I asked him why he only sold me only sides when I said that I wanted the GCT combo with yams and Mac and cheese and the American comfort plate strawberry butter maple syrup and fries the 5 piece. His response was "yes you ordered a GCT combo but you didn't say you wanted chicken " I was like it's a combo it comes with chicken so he then voided my order and told me I have to pay again. I just left because he completely ignored me when I was ordering

Wanted to try Melba's since they got to Grand Central Station. Opted for the chicken and waffles. First word that came to my mind was "wow". The waffles were like enjoying a delicious waffle cake. It was soft, cake like, and delicious. I was so sad there were only two pieces, but the meal itself was enough. It came with a strawberry butter and maple syrup that made it taste that much better. The chicken tenders (you can get a 5 or 8 piece) were delicious as well. Real chicken, nice sized pieces, and great tasting. The meal would've been six stars had the tenders had a hunny chipotle sauce for the tenders. The fries (Cajun or sweet potato) were delicious. Crunchy, Cajun flavored, and just the right amount. Looking forward to returning to try the catfish with Mac and cheese.

Love the location. 4/5 Clean neat neighborhood restaurant spot with dark stained wood again stark white tiles. Parked across street but the meter was broken. Also we didn't know we needed cash and the ATM was not close. Service was awesome. 5/5 Server established immediate rapport with my wife and the group and checked on us without being an annoying shadow. Food? Ehhh. 3.5 out of 5 I expected the food to be like southern down home cooking. It was not. yams were lemony, but not weren't seasoned with cinnamon, brown sugar, etc. Mac and cheese had a hard cap of cheese on top but when we dug into it wasn't baked it was boiled with cheese mixed in and added to the drop of the dish. Chicken was hot but the breading wasn't particularly seasoned- it wasn't just salt and flour but the seasoning on chicken could have really stood out against the waffle. Green weren't seasoned especially well-several misses. Like the fried tomatoes, fried fish, and the egg roll appetizer.

I visited Melba located at Grand Central Terminal food market at the lower level. I've always passed by it, but never ate here before. It was alright. I asked the staff questions and they were knowledgeable about what they serve. I asked about the fries and chicken tenders. They give you a small portion for $10. At least you get a choice of what type of fries, which I chose the sweet potato fries. Overall, it didn't taste any different from a fast food spot like McDonald's or Wendy's. I won't be ordering from them again.

I was hungry coming off the metro north, Melba's was about to close and I slid right in and ordered a catfish sandwich. It was good. The service was fast and pleasant. The space was clean. Will swing by again if I'm In the area.

This is really 3.5* Melba recently opened in the grand central food court (located in the basement of Grand Central Terminal) next to Dirty Tacos and Shake Shack. It's a limited menu of catfish or fried chicken with pancakes or sides. I decided on a special of 2 pieces chicken with 2 sides (collard greens and sweet potatoes edges with a drink (lemonade and iced tea mixed). The chicken was crispy on the outside and the meat inside was juicy. It wasn't greasy. The drink was perfectly portioned. Be ready to order otherwise the employee might step aside for another customer, who might be ready to order. Another employee prepared the food in a relatively short time. Go check out the fried chicken that beat Bobby Flay.

Went here on a Saturday morning for brunch. Service was extremely slow but the food was completely worth it! I got the fried chicken with collards and mac and cheese. Chicken was seasoning and fried to perfection, collards were cooked perfectly, and mac and cheese was some of the best I've ever had. My friends got the catfish and oxtails and both loved their meals too. My friends and I are all from the south so we were not sure what to expect but Melba's got our stamps of approval!

Finally a taste of soul food at Grand Central!! The food was good, it was the comfort I needed after a long day in the city. I couldn't decide what I wanted and I probably looked confused lol so the guy suggested the GCT combo which was a "peace" of chicken, 2 sides, and a drink. It was $16 (plus tax of course) which was a great price for grand central terminal and the portion size was good. I was totally satisfied. The chicken was good. It wasn't like an over the top blow me away seasoned chicken, but it was good. Idk if I would get/recommended the catfish if you're not eating it right away. Loved the sides. I did the Mac n cheese and greens. Can't wait to go back for the yams. Sweet tea was enjoyable too! I also took home 2 of the sweet potato pies and they were amazing, it is definitely a must grab item. I can't believe I found something good to eat at Grand Central Station that's worth the return. Take it for what it is and don't get it twisted, I'm sure this is just a quick little taste of what their restaurant on 114th st has to offer but until I can get to the full sit down experience, this will definitely do!!! It's like home cooking!

    Oxtail Bones

I understand that prices in New York are high, but $43 for what I received was unacceptable. The oxtail portion was extremely small--less than half a pound--and most of the pieces were nothing but bones and fat. There was barely about 2 ounces of actual meat in the entire dish. On top of that, my collard greens and my drink were missing from the order. For a meal that came out to about $80, the value just wasn't there. What made it even more frustrating is that it seemed like the restaurant was closing when my order came through. If that was the case, it would have been better to simply cancel the order instead of taking my money and making me wait almost an hour for what felt like bones, fat, and scraps from the bottom of the pot. Overall, the portion, missing items, and quality of the food were very disappointing for the price. I really expected much better.

A friend and I chose to experience the Restaurant Week lunch special since neither of us had been to this restaurant before. We sat at the bar and decided to go for the $19 lunch special they serve Monday - Friday instead. We had alot of staff servicing us. Even though we sat at the actual bar, we had a floor server attending to us as well as the bar staff. We even met the manager, Tiffany, as she introduced herself to us and made sure we were taken care of properly. The UWS location is huge. It is about 2/3rds of a North/South block with an enclosed patio built in the front of the restaurant. The bar is simply beautiful. It is half inside and half on the sidewalk also semi enclosed. I did not walk around the inside of the restaurant but I did see there were alot of mirrors and a darker interior. Bar was filled with liquor on the walls and gave it a modern day saloon feel. Very comfortable and inviting. We ordered drinks initially. They were carefully crafted and tasty on a hot summer day. I ordered the Waldorf Salad lunch special and my friend had the Spicy Chicken Sandwich. I must say the portions are large. They make sure you do not leave hungry! :) Both entrees came with soup and a second side. I had the biscuit and honey/maple butter. Oh my was it heavenly. My friend was super satisfied with her sandwich. It looked like a meal fit for a Queen! All of the food was seasoned well. While we were still enjoying our meal the bar changed from lunch to happy hour service. My friend decided to order the Margarita flight. It came with three flavored margaritas for a mere $12. I tried the Spicy Brine Margarita and it will now be the only drink I have for future visits. So delicious and flavorful. We were having such a great time as the bar filled with patrons and we spoke with our neighbors. At this time one of our servers brought us a complimentary pretzel. It was the star of the show from presentation to taste I would recommend anyone to try it. The bathrooms are unisex. By the time I needed to use it the restaurant was crowded and so it needed to be serviced. The stall I utilized had a strong urine smell and needed a proper cleaning. Management might consider placing air fresheners in each stall to at least give the illusion of cleanliness. This restaurant raised the bar for hospitality! The service was top notch as well as the food and atmosphere. If you have not tried this place I highly suggest that you do. It is a 100 out of 10 establishment for NYC! My gratitude goes out to all of the wait staff and bartenders that made our experience so wonderful.

Brunch at Jacob's Pickles is a real treat. I ordered the coleslaw with pickles as a side, it was delicious. The breakfast platter was absolutely massive and overall good, a bit salty for me, and the biscuit was a bit soft. But the grits were delightful. I sat at the bar, so the service was fine, though not particularly memorable. What I loved most was the patio: it's partially open and partially enclosed, letting you enjoy plenty of natural light while staying cool in the air conditioning. It gives you the feeling of dining outdoors without the noise or wind from the street. The interior design is beautiful and adds so much to the experience. I definitely recommend checking this place out. I'll certainly be back to try more of the menu!

The vibe inside is so cool, chill hip hop music playing throughout and I genuinely added about five songs to my music library before we even finished eating. That kind of atmosphere is hard to find. The food was incredible. I ordered the buffalo chicken tenders with waffles and everything about it was perfect. The tenders were crispy and glazed beautifully in buffalo sauce. The waffle was not your average waffle, it had this wheat cinnamon style to it that made it stand out, soft, fluffy and absolutely delicious. It came with butter and what I believe was an herb butter as well and whatever it was it was incredible. My fiancé ordered eggs Andy style, scrambled with bacon and toast, and the real standout on his plate were the potatoes. Crushed style, perfectly seasoned with what tasted like brown sugar and paprika. We are still talking about those potatoes. Service was amazing and the whole experience just felt effortless and fun. If you are in the Lower East Side and looking for an incredible brunch spot with amazing food and even better vibes, Sweet Chick is the one. Do not sleep on this place.

This one honestly hurt my heart…read more.. Y'all... this review hurts my heart to write because I am a Sweet Chick fan. Not a "I tried it once" fan. A real fan. I've been going to Sweet Chick since there was only one location in Brooklyn. I was literally traveling from Jersey to Brooklyn just for the food, the drinks, and the experience, and I never minded doing it because it was always worth it. So when they opened the Ludlow Street location, I was excited because now I didn't have to make the trip to Brooklyn every time I wanted my chicken and waffles. Back then, Sweet Chick was an experience. They had the big specials board with rotating waffles, desserts, and seasonal items. Their chicken and waffles never missed. I honestly can't remember ever leaving disappointed. So this review is really hard for me. Back on June 26th, after work, my mom and I decided to grab dinner. I work in the LES, and she suggested Sweet Chick. I did tell her my brother Robert had gone recently and said it had changed a lot, but we figured we'd see for ourselves. We got there around 9-ish. The first thing we noticed... It was HOT. Not warm. Hot. Like, "why does it feel like a sauna in here?" hot. We've had enough hot weather this summer, so walking into a restaurant with little to no air conditioning was honestly uncomfortable. We actually debated leaving before we even ordered, but decided to stick it out. Unfortunately... it never got better. The service also wasn't what I remembered. I'm really big on customer service, and Sweet Chick has always had amazing service whenever I've gone. This time it just felt different. The attentiveness wasn't there, and the overall vibe just felt... off. Even the menu has changed. My mom used to love their kale salad, but now it's made differently with things like dates, and she wasn't interested in it anymore. For drinks, my mom ordered an espresso martini, and unfortunately she really didn't enjoy it. It was pretty bitter, and we couldn't quite figure out what was off about it. If I'm ordering an espresso martini, I have certain expectations, and this one just didn't hit for her. I ordered the Queen of New York, and I actually really enjoyed my drink. No complaints there. Now... the food. I ordered the Maple Chipotle Chicken & Sweet Potato Waffle. And this is where my heart really broke. Years ago, when they first introduced the sweet potato waffle as a special, I remember it actually tasting like sweet potato. This one... Honestly just tasted like a regular waffle. I kept looking for that sweet potato flavor, and it just wasn't there. The chicken itself was crispy and cooked well, but the maple chipotle sauce wasn't evenly coated. Some bites were really good, while other pieces were dry because they barely had any sauce on them. Another thing longtime Sweet Chick fans might notice is the butter service. I remember getting three or four different flavored butters, each in their own little container. This time we got two flavors together in one cup. It's a small thing, but it was one of those details that always made Sweet Chick feel special. My mom ordered the Carolina BBQ Chicken with the Grilled Corn Waffle. I'll be fair--her waffle absolutely tasted like a corn waffle. I tried it, and it was really good. She enjoyed her meal more than I did, although she also had a few pieces of chicken that weren't evenly coated with sauce and were a little dry. Overall, she thought it was okay. And I think that's really the word for this visit. Okay. Not terrible. But not the Sweet Chick we remembered. Maybe that's why this visit hit me so hard. When you've loved a place for years, you naturally compare it to what you know it can be. I genuinely hope this was just an off night because I have so many great memories here, and I'd honestly love to come back one day and have the Sweet Chick experience that made me fall in love with it in the first place. Because this restaurant has meant a lot to me over the years, and I'm rooting for it. I really am.

Super tender chunks of lamb and the pasta was perfectly al dente. Incredible pastas! The mains were okay, pork chop was a bit too salty and the fried catfish was really underwhelming. They gave us a little soju shot to start our evening and also one to end our evening for our little anniversary. We wanted to try their desserts (!!!), but we were overly full. We'll be returning to try the rest of their menu and their desserts. Loved the food, the experience, the vibes.

there's often a long wait for C as in Charlie, but late on a Friday night we were able to get…read moreseated without a wait or reservation. we were there at around 10PM and there was a bit of a rush to get our order in as it seems like the kitchen closes at 10:30 despite the restaurant closing at 11:30. our waitress was veryy friendly, quite the chatter, and gave some recs for our order. we were also given sake shots when seated which was a nice touch. the ceviche was the star of the meal, the fluke crudo with the citrus and tiger milk was perfection. only qualm was how small it was, not really able to share with anymore than two people. frankly could have had two of them myself. the toast roll was not quite what we were expecting. it was a deep fried toast-like roll filled with minced shrimp on top of a creamy sweet chili dressing. there was some pickled onion to breakup the heaviness of it, but not my favorite item flavor wise. the mushroom bibimbap was delish, the rice/mushrooms were buttery, and there was a nice contrast with the soy and pickled onion. the potato nuggets were super crispy fingerling potatoes with a truffle mayo that was one of the best dipping sauces I've ever had. overall a really solid small plate spot! it's a smaller space, but they're efficient in getting your order, food & water refills. enough variety on the concise menu for someone of any dietary need to have at least and item or two.
