This location has been sitting on my bookmarks for a while, and since I happened to be in the area, I knew I had to finally come give it a try! I didn't dine in this time and went with takeout instead. I ordered the fried chicken with mac and cheese and collard greens for both plates. One came with 2 pieces of chicken and the other with 3 pieces, plus cornbread with the 2 piece plate. Both plates came out to $35, which honestly isn't bad at all! Now let's talk about the food! The chicken was SO good! Crispy, flavorful, and definitely the highlight of the meal. The mac and cheese and greens were great additions, too. I also tried their hot sauce, which has a slightly sweet flavor. Not what I expected, but I actually enjoyed it! I can't wait to come back and dine in next time. There are still more items on the menu I want to try, and this is definitely a place worth revisiting! One thing to keep in mind parking can be a challenge. OK, let me start off by saying the lady behind the counter was a sweetheart very pleasant lady. She was a sweetie. Now my complaint the food itself was bland no seasoning whatsoever and my catfish wasn't even crispy I will give the Mac N Cheese a solid 8 tho that was the best thing on the plate. We timed it perfectly because of the 4 tables , one was available! After asking the cashier where orders are placed I realized there was a 3-person line, and it went quickly. The outgoing food team needs improved quality control standards training. I don't want to go to a place where I have to ask them to open the lid to make sure I got edible/not burnt food. The front of the house staff appear to be new. They should not serve items they would not eat. Burnt cornbread 2 corners, only edges all brown not golden. My recent visit to Charles Pan Fried Chicken did not yield the same results to which I am accustomed. It was a beautiful Saturday afternoon around 2:30 when I arrived and there were few people there, largely I assume because there were so many street fairs and Harlem Summer Streets happening in the City. There was no line for the first time in my experience. I ordered the ten piece Family Meal, which comes with three sides and cornbread. I ordered the collards, yams and coleslaw, since they didn't have string beans. That's a bargain at $48 and especially when we see how fried chicken has been taken to lofty price levels in this City. Charles has always been that place that not only hits way above its weight, but is straight up superior to anything regardless of price. Service was friendly and respectful in keeping with tradition. I get home and that's when the disappointment began to set in. The amount of protein one receives is now three quarters of what was served for the Family Meal before. One receives two breasts and two thighs in one large container and three drumsticks and three small wings that fit in a container half the size as the other. That is a change and not for the better. It seemed disrespectful to serve those six little bones, especially to those who recall how it tasted and the perceived value in your bag before the investors got with Charles, back when he only had one spot a few doors up from Lighthouse. I don't perceive this as the Family Meal of yore and the chicken and batter were not seasoned the way I am accustomed at Charles. I struggled to write that last paragraph, given how much I have talked and written about Charles' chicken. In fact, I have eaten eight of those ten pieces to give it a fair shake. I have eaten the sides too. The strong suit is definitely the cornbread and the coleslaw is the weak suit. The slaw could use some grated carrots. In between, the greens are a bit underseasoned and could use a few smoked turkey necks or wings. The yams are about right; though, I am certain some would say they could use some cinnamon. I struggled because reviews can affect a business and no one should read this and feel you cannot enjoy what you eat here. However, there are people who have been eating this chicken and sides for many years and well before I started writing Yelp reviews. Charles Gabriel has history and has earned respect and should be able to ease back and enjoy the proceeds after putting in so much hard work at his humble store up from Lighthouse. Those who have been around know what he produced and prepared and this last visit was not it. I have to call it the way I experienced it and perhaps this was an aberration. Perhaps the sourcing of the chicken has changed. Maybe that was an off day at this location or they had a staffing issue that day. In any case, my visit and experience was 3.8 stars. read more

I found this off of TikTok and after looking at all the pictures and videos online I knew I had to try them out. The fried chicken is definitely good though. I was a little disappointed that they did not have chicken wings as that is my favorite piece of chicken. It is pretty small inside as it's more to go spot but they do have tables outside to sit at which we did when we ate our food. I had Charles Pan Fried Chicken on my list to visit for a while because it is one of the legends of Harlem. My kids and I visited the store, which was clean, and the establishment was full of people. As you order food, you see the chicken getting fried, and the sides are already cooked in a steam box. As I looked around at the food, I saw the cornbread, and to be honest, the cornbread looked like it was rolled over with a trailer tracker, but we decided to try it anyway. We ordered the family meal, which was forty-five dollars, served with three 16-oz. sides of your choice, and six pieces of Cornbread. We ordered the Collard Greens, Macaroni and Cheese, and Yams. I asked for Potato Salad, but they were all sold out, and I'm honestly glad they ran out. Let me start with the good, so I'll start with the Collard Greens. The Collard Greens were good and very well seasoned. It could have used some vinegar to give the Collard Greens some acidity and boost the flavor. The Macaroni and Cheese was dry. The sides were already made before you ordered them and could have become dry by sitting in the steamer. The macaroni and cheese lacked flavor, and the cheese was inconsistent throughout the macaroni and cheese. There were clumps of cheese, and then some were melted. The noodles lacked flavor, and they seemed overcooked. The Macroni and Cheese was not macking. The Yams were the consistency of a Mashed Potato and again lacked flavor. I couldn't taste the Cinnamon, Nutmeg, or any sweetness. They could have used some love. The Cornbread looked like it had gone through a hard time. I'm unsure if it was how they cut it or if it broke apart in the oven while cooking, but it looked like something rolled over it. The Cornbread tasted simply like nothing. It did not have taste to it at all. Lastly, the Fried Chicken was good, but the skin was falling off. Then, as we kept eating the chicken, I saw it was raw. After that, my kids and I stopped eating and didn't eat anything else. We were so disappointed. Most likely, I will not be back again. So this is not your average chicken joint it is pricey. They used to have a lunch special that was just with taxes that will come to $10 now it comes almost $12 and I think that's the best option where you get two pieces of chicken or turkey wing, and one side with cornbread. Now the mac & cheese for me is a hit or miss; sometimes it hits, sometimes it's OK, sometimes I'm just mad I spent the money. It was work that brought me to this part of town for lunch. It was a recent article from Eater on the best fried chickens that brought me to Charles. When I saw that the Charles classic only costs $10 and comes with two pieces of chicken, a side, and a cornbread, I knew that ordering the combo was my easiest decision of the day. While we all know that white meat is healthier than dark meat, but does that rule apply when we are eating fried chicken? Been on the list for awhile and we finally had a chance to visit. The food was incredible. It nostalgically reminded me of the fried chicken I used to get as a child in southern luncheon cafeterias.
