I have been a loyal Meijer shopper my whole life. What I like the most about about Meijer is the produce. I can always count on Meijer to be well stocked with a big selection of exotic produce as well as the usual local produce. Everything is fresh and ripe. What don't like so much about Meijer fortunately doesn't happen very often is for example 2 summers ago meijers offered Lemon drop melons ,if you have never tried one ya should they are amazing anyway last summerthe didn't offer them??? I was so disappointed. I was able to find them at a different grocery store in town. The other reason I like shopping at Meijer is because the staff is unionized and they have health insurance and other benefits which helps that job be a living wage. This afternoon at the Mrijer store on Shaver Rd.in Portage Mi.I had been using one of the Amigos as I am disabled.Got all the way to the back of the store,by the yougert.My Amigo quit working.I started to walk back to the front of the store.Which was very hard for me.I saw a young man stocking.I asked him for help.He immediately assisted me .He went to get me another cart.Being told there were none available he proceeded to find someone who could find one one.He came back and informed me another employee would be bringing me another Amigo.A couple minutes later a young girl brought me a better Amigo.She was very nice and helped transfer my items from the first amigo into the new one Asked if I needed any other assistance.Meanwhile the young man( thin with dark hair and glasses.Evidently a stocker) retrieved the broken amigo to return it to the front.He also asked if I needed any further help.Even another young man inquired if I was alright as I was waiting.I was very grateful to all them.It was very painful to try to walk all the way to the front of the store.I am so glad he asked. if he could help me.Young people are usually not that perceptive.He immediately put my comfort and issue ahead of his stocking.Very polite and quick with solving my problem.I was impressed.The young lady also I had to send this review.They didn't know that I have neuropathy in my feet and legs.Knee and hip issues.Walking is torture for me.But the Amigos make it possible to keep my independence.I like picking out my own food. The Good: I have several friends over the years that work at our Shaver rd MEIJER'S from greeters to stockers and some kind and helpful cashiers! (When they have more than 1 or 2 working?) Having bad ankle arthritis I try to not have to stand and wait too long but everyone of you know since 2020, establishments say they cannot find workers? It might be 2 sided since our "Governor" hampered so many businesses by shutting all businesses down because of "C", even schools and churches. and as you might remember even barber shops with one older man being threatened to be made accountable for his "grievous sins" against the "Queen of Lansing?" I must digress because this would be a review of our "leadership" and perhaps it should be and even more, perhaps discussion about nursing home residents, however we and many friends and family members have very strong concerns and we feel they relate to the aforementioned comments about diminished workers in our best stores, restaurants, and grocery retailers. We no longer work but we believe many issues have caused several we frequented to shut down permanently! The effects of 2021 to early 2025 in January are literally astronomical and very concerning to our city and state, and as most know, bars were allowed to remain open but churches were not only closed by government orders, our own feelings were not allowed as we find out the truths of the 6' distancing and masks, along with many healthcare workers and military members were fired and that was not right as we feel bad that MEIJER'S and many small businesses as well as larger ones, are still feeling the effects? Anyone remember making calls and not be forced to "communicate with multiple choice Virtual Bots that have predefined questions that cause you to be hung up on? Or feel fully frustrated that after 5+ minutes have passed when you are still trying to give your best choices only to be responded with the "bot" stating; "Hmmm? I didn't recognize that response?" I could name businesses but I will not go on much further telling about finally "passing the virtual agents' test of our patience and then getting an "agent" you must chat with, or even a " live agent" whom speaks so unclearly and says their name that you could not even guess the spelling of their name? Yes, I apologize for my lengthy review, but honestly as I learn that these folks are hardly being paid fairly and do not need to hear our frustrations while their bosses and executives hide behind the scenes? My final comment is to try hard when I go shopping and remember what it was like being in their shoes merely trying to pay their inflated bills from high inflation that we were told by so many in the previous administration that it was "transitory!" My favorite super market in Portage. They truly excel in service, quality, and cleanliness. They are located right next to a Walmart, which I visit occasionally to find items i cant find at Meijer. But you cant compare the two. You will notice the difference in the staff, atmosphere, and checkout service. We will keep shopping here as long as we're in the area. read more

I been finding myself going to this location more often then usual. one thing I noticed is the employees. so, this rant is solely based on basic human acknowledgment not items they sell. all miejers basically sell the same stuff. Every time I walk into this place i notice that the greeters never say greet me like a white person. they will always greet the person in front of me and the person behind me, coincidence? happened again last night. even the self scan person did not say anything to me but acknowledged the person that was literally two steps behind me? one more thing to add, usually the greeters that do this are older people. I dont give two cents about this, grew up with people like this my whole life! however, it saddens me that my kids will have to experience treatment from people like this, even if it's something as little as this, still stings a bit. read more

Not sure why this Meijer has such low reviews ... it's your typical Meijer. I've been twice now when visiting friends who live in Portage. We usually go here to buy materials for fondue for the night, so we buy cheese, veggies, and sweet foods (marshmallows, chocolate chips, etc.) for both cheese and chocolate fondue. I've been here twice now and both times the majority of the grocery store was clean. I will say I used the bathroom this time and one of the stalls had a few flies in it (gross ... and weirdly, it was the ONLY stall that did ...) so they may want to work on that. Otherwise, I have no issues with this Meijer, and it's set up similarly to my home Meijer (Royal Oak, MI). read more

I generally absolutely loathe shopping at Meijer these days, as they tend to be tremendously understaffed, and I wind up spending forever there. But I have to give some serious kudos to the staff for their incredibly hard work today. Michigan went into crisis mode with the first couple in-state diagnoses of coronavirus and the WHO's upgrade to pandemic status. I was due for a visit to the grocery store anyway, so I decided to just bite the bullet and go for it this evening hoping it would be at least a little bit slower than during the day. I'd read on social media early in the day that most local stores were completely wiped out of some specific supplies like toilet paper and hand sanitizer, so I was pleasantly surprised just to see that Meijer had plenty of TP in stock, plus pallets upon pallets of additional supplies ready to be stocked. The stockers were working so hard some of them were breathing very heavily and sweating. I heard many of them talking about how long they'd been there already that day and how long they were going to continue to be there. The extremely cheerful young man at the register when I checked out had a similar story. Kid walking up to this morning thinking: this should be an easy day. I'm working, but I have tomorrow off. La! He's young and fit and happy to have the overtime, so he's picked up another shift for tomorrow and was working an extremely long shift today. He was very chatty and easygoing, as were so many of the shoppers I encountered. It's a really interesting social experiment to see what people stock up on. My favorite was a gal who had no cart, but just an armful of bags of lollipops. I truly hope that since Meijer's sales are through the roof right now that they will pass along some of their extra income in bonuses to the incredible staff members that worked so hard through this situation. I highly doubt that it will happen, but if I hear that it does, Meijer will definitely earn back some customer loyalty from me that they've lost in the past decade or so of off-putting business choices. read more

I recently moved back to this area however I won't shop at meijers on shaver again. Not only are there only 3 open check out lanes you have to bag your own groceries. If I wanted a job I would have applied at least then I would get paid for bagging my groceries. I refuse to self check like most stores are going to now they expect us to bag too. To much.. they don't even offer discounts for seniors. This store is off my list I'll be driving elsewhere to shop. read more

It's not the Portage Shaved Rd location, it's Meijer Corporate in Grand Rapids. In this day of unimaginable technology they apparently don't invest in quality app designers. They require customers paying with EBT to leave the app and go on website to pay, where your order may or may not be in the shopping cart. Then if their payment system crashes they don't give you an opportunity to try again, they cancel your order and do not return the mperks used to get $5 off basket. They punish the customer for being a loyal customer. read more

Self checkout had no one providing service. I was using my own bag and the register insisted It had to be checked. Tried 3 times, no one helping. Went to. Regular checkout. On the way out, 15 minutes later, the greeter called me 'dear'. When I told the clerk he should not use misogynist phrases, he told me I could tell Customer Service. Apparently he doesn't serve customers. I just really hate shopping at Meijer. We need more choice in Portage read more

They added aNd reorganized self check out and took away cashiers. The new self check out will not accommodate large orders. Only 5 lines open now. 5 people waiting in each line. And I don't believe it's because of 'distancing' the new self check out set up is very close proximity to other shoppers. I had the worst experience I have ever had in my many years of being a continuous Meijer shopper. This happened at the Meijer on Shaver Road in Portage, Michigan. I love the store and love your deals but in checkout on this Sunday afternoon October 16, there were only 4 cashier lanes open. I know they are far short of help but this has been going on for an unbelievable amount of time and they need to do something to correct that. I had this cashier who looked like she was either in her late 60's or 70s and not to knock older people but they need to be more competent. Looking back at my receipt, my water jugs I refilled I had to point out that I brought them from home and was supposed to be water/no jug , and the cashier made that adjustment but at same time she left my Purified Water on there 2 for 1.09 but that was double charged. AlsoI was charged for 3 frozen Spinach when I was only supposed to be charged for 2. I was charged like $4.00 more than I should have. On top of that, when I finally got my order complete, as I was helping bag those groceries I noticed that the outside screen wasn't working where you could see your items being scanned and I for 1 want to know where my money is going. And as I paid with my bank card, it asked if I wanted cash back but didn't go through and said I would have to use the courtesty desk. I am sorry but can't let stuff like this go. My recommendation for Meijer is possibly pay more to keep help coming in and have the cashiers get more help when they are not very much experienced. Thank you read more

I love Meijer! It's one of the things that I really miss now that I no longer live in the midwest. They sell pretty much everything you could want, the prices are very good, and the Meijer organics food brand is great. They also have an excellent produce selection and some very good sales. The lines to check out can get long on busy days, but they always have express lanes open if you're in a hurry and can manage to make it to the checkout with only a few items. read more

Always disappointed in their selections - they are pushing out more name brands in favor of their own products. Shelves are only well stocked on the weekend - other days depleted in many areas - even includes milk. Always check expiration dates because so many times something I selected has already expired. Last year at Thanksgiving I kept in contact with the store about their shipment of chestnuts - they always said they were coming and they never did. This year experiencing the same thing - I go and nothing, ask and they are coming - call and they say they are there and when I go they are not there but "coming". read more

I have been a Meijer shopper for nearly 20 years. It is the only place I buy my groceries. I have shopped all the Meijer stores in the Kalamazoo area. This particular Meijer (on Shaver Road in Portage) is my least favorite and unfortunately is the one I shop most frequently because it is closest to my house. It is clearly poorly managed. It is consistently out of stock on any groceries that are on sale. It is such a chronic problem that I've begun to suspect it is intentional as a means to boost store profits because shoppers must chose brands that aren't on sale just to get the items they need. To share a particular example: Meijer brand baggies and storage bags were on sale one week for $1.00 each (nearly half price). The sale starts at 6 a.m. Sunday. I shop at 11 a.m. Sunday and they are completely out of stock! Seriously? Five hours into the sale? Are they all in a back room ... ? There are other irritants. They can't seem to keep in stock the only food that my son's Guinea pig will eat. I don't know how many expensive bags of alternative pet food I've bought and then had to throw out. What an inconvenience and waste of time to have to drive to another Meijer for a bag of kibbles! And I've done it! One more big beef. They've finally replaced SOME of their grocery carts but many are so beaten up they won't even roll without squeaky noise or extra effort to keep them moving in a straight line. I typically have to test multiple carts to find a suitable one. And, the rest rooms are in bad shape with non-working faucets and broken hand dryers. (Of course they don't offer paper towels for guests.) Yet the store recently invested in one of those fancy, trendy "mix your own" soda dispensers at the checkout so they can sell more drinks. You see where the priorities are. In summary, don't shop this Meijer unless you absolutely must, and if you do, expect disappointments. Meijer stores on Gull Road and West Main are far superior choices. read more

Shopped this store today and todays experience along with the issues of discontinued products, some items not stocked for nearly a month, items stocked in the wrong spot and employees telling me that the case of product that I had brought to checkout had different sized containers than the one I thought I was purchasing, they were most definitely mistaken, has finally convinced me to do the bulk of my shopping elsewhere. The lower prices do not compensate for the frustration on any given trip there to find that they no longer carry items that I purchase on a weekly basis or tell me that something is on order for over a month. Today and item was out in the dairy case and was visible on a stocking cart, after checking back again to see if they had gotten around to it I still did not see an employee that I could ask to go into the cooler to unpack the item for me. The stores that I have to go to so I can complete my shopping are going to get the bulk of my shopping from now on. Congratulations Meijer! I have to say this is my least fav Meijer store. I spent about $800-$1000 a month on food for my business. I had a experience with the terrible management. I was walking out and the man IN FRONT of me set off the alarm but instead the manager grabbed me by the arm PULLED me back and asked to see my receipt. I gave her it an said it wasn't me. She continued to be rude and give this look like I was stupid!!!! I opened my purse I had on shorts and a tshirt I told her I just spend over 300$ I don't need to steal anything nor would I. She said you can leave MY store. So I gladly did and have NOT been back since. I am happy to say that Walmart opened their groceries and I don't even care if something is more expensive I will not be treated that way while the guy who did shop lift walked away. I love the new Walmart. When there is a sale they actually have the sale stuff in inventory. You can go right after the sale starts and they are out of stock. The management and the employees are all so miserable there it is sad. I have seen this same manager yell at a cashier because she was trying to help out a new cashier that was next to her. If you have something to say to your employees you should first learn HOW to talk to me. I have been a manager for many years in also a stressful business and I would never talk down to them I learned the BEST managers are the ones who work side by side with their employees.
