We purchased multiple packages of New York strip that were all stocked in the same cooler under a clearly marked $6.99/lb sale sign. When entering our receipt at home, we discovered that about half were charged at $12.99/lb. My wife called immediately and was told it was her responsibility to check every individual package, even though they were all displayed together under the sale tag. A short time later the owner called and offered to make it right, which we appreciated. I attempted to update my original review to reflect that resolution, but found that I had been blocked from the store's Facebook page and could no longer access my review. I lived here since 2019. The place was under construction for a while.. I was always on a good rapport with the brothers who own the place. Then all of a sudden one day in February 2025. They decided to charge me seven dollars more than my bill because they decided to add carrots and celery to my order. After the fact. It's like he knew the code. It was the fatter brother. The owner I don't know his name. I know he's the fatter one. Good luck and check your receipt. I've called the mountain many times and I still shop here and they keep their eye on me but I still pay for everything and I called them out and say that's not on my order at the register and they end up deleting three things in a row. Midtown Fresh is not that fresh! I had a fine experience the first time in here about 1 year ago but tonight when I went back in to see what the deli had to offer, the deli food looked like it had been sitting out all day. Pasta was dried out, salads the same. There was no one behind the counter. There was one item of sushi left for selection. The bananas were all brown in color. Only the organic ones were relatively fresh.... I bought three prepackaged items and headed out.... There was no diversity in the staff. There was also no leadership presence in the store....Very disappointed in the overall experience. I'm not sure that I'll go back. It's definitely run down since I was last here. read more

Very excited to see this new store in Kalamazoo! It opened yesterday, and when we went in this afternoon, the place was BUSTLING! Pros: Let's start with coffee, well, because it's my first love (sorry, Ed). Just kidding. Not kidding. I've been envious of the Kalamazoo Coffee (a local roaster) range of beans in one of our grocery stores over in Comstock. I've longed for it closer to us, and am not satisfied with the pre-bagged offerings of Kalamazoo Coffee in Meijer and D&W. YAHOO FOR US! It's here - both pre-bagged and freshly roasted beans. AND they have light roast. Life is good. Love the murals - very clever and creative! Wide aisles - much appreciated, especially when I'm in a wheelchair scooter. Hot food bar - with entrees, soups, and more. There's also a deli with sliced meats and cheeses, as well as prepared salads, sushi, etc. BREAD! and baked goods from local favorite Victorian Bakery. Thank you. Meat galore - there's a chop shop and fishmonger section - we got the freshly crafted Italian sausages. Hello, dinner! Family-run! We met Kiar and Tom, brothers who are second generation grocers and run this store with their dad. They also own Park Street Market, on the north side. Fresh flowers, large vegetable section, plenty of beer and wine. See's CHOCOLATES! OMG!!! Cons: I am not in love with Spartan brands - it's a little too expensive, especially when compared to Aldi, for a store brand. The price for my coffee rang up wrong. However, Tom at the customer service desk was happy to fix it. Just check your receipt while the store settles, I'd suggest. So happy to have another grocery store option near us, especially one with a wider selection of Kalamazoo Coffee and Victorian Bakery goods. read more

I am growing more and more grateful for this gem of a store, which really has made such a difference in adding healthy options I'm in an area that was once a bit of a food desert. Was heading to a party yesterday and needed to grab a few items to contribute to the potluck and was able to find some stellar options here for a fair price, and get in and out the door and less than 5 minutes. Just noticed that they also have delivery available through the Yelp app, which I would certainly take advantage of if I lived in the neighborhood. read more

The manager stopped me from taking an amigo out to my car so my handicapped relative could get into the store so they had to walk with a cart into the store which took them 10 minutes to do and was very painful for them. When we got to the meat department we had trouble finding the chicken that was on sale so we asked the employee that was working there and he was extremely rude not bothering to help us locate the sale chicken he pointed to a random area and said it's over there no where near the correct area a nice customer showed us where the chicken was. We also bought some steaks that looked good in the package but they turned out to be very tough and unappealing when they were cooked. When we tried to leave the store the manager once again stopped us from taking the amigo out to the car even though I was going to drive it right back into the store and he did not like the idea of me taking the groceries out to the car and then picking up my relative since it could block the drive which it wouldn't have so my handicapped relative had to painfully walk another 10 minutes to the car and then be in agony for hours because the manager wad an uncaring jerk. This was first and last time shopping here we wanted to help out a local business but we will drive the extra few miles and give our business to Aldi, Meijer, or Wal-Mart where the meat is better and you can take the amigos out to your car. read more

We went to check this place out . I'm not sure if I'd buy any deli items from here. Some of the items were very dry and did not look good and fresh at all. Hmm Overall,the store is clean which is good. However, some of the freezer items were freezer burnt so that's not a good sign either. I'd understand if the store is busy and they don't have time to look after the freezer section but it was very empty. Management should definitely make sure that they are the deli items are fresh and throw away freezer burnt items. I'd love to check in and see in about a month to see if they'd improve. read more

I had a number of friends who lived in the Vine neighborhood that had forsaken owning cars and instead walked, biked, or took the bus. They all used the Hardings store on Westnedge and Howard as their primary grocery store. It was a good store and it was convenient. So when Hardings closed several years ago it presented my friends with hardships. They dreamed of somebody coming in to fill the vacuum. Any grocery store would be welcomed by them. But the Midtown Fresh looks to be more than just any grocery store. It reminds me in several ways of other local Hardings, D&W, and Family Fare groceries. Since the Parkview D&W is our default grocery, I can't imagine I'll use the Midtown Fresh site that often. The beer selection looks impressive - but we don't drink that much beer anymore. Midtown Fresh lacks bakery ovens of its own, so besides the usual brand name breads it carries loaves and pastries from the Victorian Bakery - but we aren't fans of that bakery, preferring instead Sarkozy and Zingerman breads. It does have the largest selection of loose and packaged Kalamazoo Coffee beans that I have yet to see locally, so that may drive us to stop by sometimes. The deli is okay, but I've seen better. The staff seem pleasant and professional. The store appears to stack its carts outside, so I wonder how that will work this winter. The store has some cart storage area inside, but it's being used as a display or something now? The store is half the size of its predecessor, but there seemed ample selections of everything in the aisles. If I returned to live in the Vine neighborhood, Midtown Fresh might very well be my default choice. read more

I live in Portage and when I was working in Kalamazoo I always passed Midtown Fresh to and from work. I would stop there for lunch at the hot bar and I would stop to pick up stuff for dinner that night. Ever since the Stay at home Order I didn't want to go to Walmart or Meijers bc of the crowds. Midtown Fresh started there curbside pickup and online order and it had made such a huge difference to my shopping. I order only and pick it up the same day. Walmart can't even give me a date available right now to schedule a pickup, even with how big they are. Midtown Fresh can and WILL take care of you. I will continue to drive from Portage to Kalamazoo's Midtown Fresh to get my groceries from now on. I am not going back to the big chains anymore. read more

We visited Midtown Fresh while we waited for our screens to be repaired at the hardware store next door. My Dad has been talking non-stop about this supermarket since it opened because he likes the prices at their meat counter. When we visit a new supermarket we shop very casually and never with a list. We are complete supermarket tourists. I always check the prices on a few specific items and then we do a large loop to check out the outside perimeter of the store because we don't shop on the inside aisles of the supermarket (we don't buy any processed food and that is where the processed food lives). First we look at the produce and the price of avocados. Meijer currently has avocados at 2/$5, which kills our grocery budget every week. Midtown Fresh is selling fairly nice size avocados for $1 each. SCORE! We bagged up eight avocados and I made a mental note this was the place to get a great deal in Kalamazoo. We made our way around the produce section which was clean and well stocked and into the speciality area with the cheese and meat. Midtown has a really nice selection of cheeses. We eat a lot of cheese and we even saw some ideas for cheeses we have never heard of for future snacking. We picked up a package of jerky (no sugar!) which is hard to find anywhere else and made our way around past the bakery. We notice the bakery is stocked by the Victorian Bakery and it seemed like a very impressive case. We do not eat sugar or gluten, so I could not tell you how great these items are, but they looked lovely in their case. Next we checked out the price of sparkling water. We drink a lot of La Croix and it's about $5.99 per 12 pack at Meijer. Midtown had it for $4.00. They also had apricot, which is a flavor we have never had. We picked up an apricot 12 pack of La Croix and made our way to the dairy section. Midtown has a next selection of all the regular eggs, yogurt, milk and butter. I did notice that our yogurt brand, Siggi's is 2 for $3 at Meijer and is $2.57 per cup at Midtown. Meijer won the yogurt battle. Midtown also had a lot of eggs to pick from. They had everything from local eggs, to regular inexpensive eggs, to fancy chicken living in a mansion eating roasted vegetables eggs. On our way to the check out I noticed a number of products from local vendors in Kalamazoo and the surrounding areas. There were packaged goods, like cookies and chocolates and then speciality flavored waters bottled in Kalamazoo. It was interesting and refreshing to see a large supermarket supporting small and local vendors by carrying their products. The nice woman who checked us out was polite and quick. All in all it was a no nonsense shopping trip to gather information for future real shopping trips. We love avocados and we may stop by just to keep our avocado budget down to a manageable level every week. read more

Stopped in today on my way home from work. Nice clean store. Deli has a lot to choose from - you can get items prepackaged or order from the counter. Also, there was a nice little buffet for self service of deli items as well. Decent meat selection. The prices of items seems a little high, but it is a smaller store so that may be why. I did not like how when I went to pay, that the employee working the register had her back to where customers would be and she was talking to another employee (I'm guessing manager?). I stood there for two to three minutes before she finally turned around (and I wasn't quiet about putting my items on the belt either). I even made eye contact with the other employee and he didn't do anything to indicate I was there. She was pleasant enough. There are plenty of places to stop for groceries - focus on the service to keep people coming back. read more

Some great selections of middle eastern groceries too. They have focused on what most people need and put a really warm architectural style in place. Since last fall when stores with reverse vending machines for accepting returnable bottles and cans were required to resume taking them, this store has claimed its machines are out of order and refuses to take returnables. Even a notice by the state attorney general in response to a complaint has been ignored. Apparently they hope people will just take their returnables to another store, but if they're items are only sold by Midtown Fresh, that is not possible. I will not shop at a store that ignores the law, and I would advise others not to buy beverages in returnable bottles and cans from this store. read more

midtown is truly a gem in kalamazoo. coming from the west coast, it's nice to have a store with a wide range of products including a lot of international items. this grocery store goes above and beyond; the employees are always nice and checkout is always fast. i really appreciate the white board for suggestions out front and i'm glad to see they're limiting the amount of cleaning supplies/paper towels/toilet paper you can buy. it's nice to see that the owners care more about making sure everyone has what they need. read more

I have become a loyal Midtown Fresh Customer in the last Month. What makes this store so special are the staff members. They pride themselves in excellent customer service and is shows as soon as you walk in the door. Autumn at check out, Marc at the Meat Counter, and the gentleman with the big beautiful smile who walks the aisles making sure the shelves are stocked. The selection of specialty foods is amazing. New items to try and a great produce section make shopping fun. Lots of grab and go meals, sandwiches, soups and hot items to choose from. We are very fortunate to have such a new and exciting store in our community. read more

The cashier ( Alexandria was the name on the receipt, short with longish black hair) was texting on her phone when we approached the check out, and continued to do so throughout our transaction! She didn't greet us or say thank you, rather she turned away and texted furiously while we waited. She really shouldn't be using her personal cell phone when she's on the clock!! read more

We've very badly needed a grocery store with fresh produce in the food desert of downtown Kalamazoo and this is perfect. They have some things they could work on yet are continually evolving and improving in the short time they've been open. What could be worked on? The quirky supply of unnecessary local gift items (locally made honey soap, random specialty candies, novelty decorations), are cute but not something I want out of a grocery store. I must say i do adore the houseplant selection despite the previous two sentences. Wonderful food options and all the produce, wine, and bakery items one can dream of. The service is the some of the friendliest in Kalamazoo, while there is no greeter like at Meijer, you will always by cheerfully greeted by an employee who seems happy to be there but never aggressively approached like "Can I help you find something?" which is nice. I've even received awesome advice to add leeks to my potato soup by one of the managers while he was helping the cashier girl bag my items. read more

I live 2 blocks away from Midtown so naturally I frequent this market. This grocery store is the most abhorrent and despicable food selling store I have ever come across, one night I bought a steak from midtown to make for a guest in my home and when I opened the package I was shocked at what I found ! The complete interior of the steak was between blue and purple meaning that cut of meat has been rotten for a LONG time! I wasn't thinking but I threw it away where I should have taken a picture of it and send Midtown and the Gazette the picture, my husband went in to customer service and brought the matter to their attention where he greeted incredibly hostile and the manager and an employee threatened to kick him out of the store, I think they were hostile because they already knew there food is rotten and tainted. People pay over $10 for a cut of steak that is garbage. I went in to Midtown today because I only buy my beverages there and walking past the raw beef only 1 out of the 30 things sitting out for sale was good and the rest looked bloodless and rancid. I don't dare confront the store about it due to the treatment my husband got but I REALLY REALLY want to tell them that it is a crime to sell expired and rotten food to the general public and someone could get dangerously sick from eating bad meat, children and elderly people eat that food and they would be more vulnerable to get sick than me or my husband. The only thing I hope for is that karma bites them a big one for consenting to do this, and maybe bites them so big to decommission their store ! I went to Midtown Fresh for the first time today. I am disabled and also am on oxygen 24/7 so I was a little disappointed to find there were no riding carts that were charged but hey, it happens. My grandson and his girlfriend were there with me, they were my transportation and they were also doing their own shopping. I was extremely impressed with the store, it was clean, well organized and the employee's that I had contact with were very friendly. When I got to the meat counter I was really amazed, they have a selection unlike any other that I've seen in Kalamazoo or Portage and the prices are amazing. All in all a good trip until we checked out. The cashier was friendly and helpful but the manager who was bagging our groceries was extremely rude to my grandson and his girlfriend. He made it quite clear that he didn't care for them and I have no idea why. All they did was help me. Their groceries were rung up first and while he was bagging their groceries he started to put mine in the same bags as theirs. My grandson corrected him and told him that we don't live in the same house so mine needed to be separate. This apparently annoyed him also. Then a customer behind me had liquor in her cart and he raised his voice to my grandson and wanted to know whose liquor it was. It wasn't even our cart! Then lady who had that cart had stepped away to look at something but came back and took her cart to another cashier. I don't blame her. One person ruined a whole shopping trip. read more
