I made my second visit to Fish Express today, and this place is a winner. Forget sentiments like "as soon as I walked through the door, I could smell that this would be a great meal." At Fish Express, that experience starts in the parking lot. This place is all about deep-frying, and that focus really shows. They know exactly what they're doing, and they always hit the mark: hot, juicy on the inside, crispy and golden brown on the outside. As was mentioned in a previous review, Fish Express does a lot of phone-in business. I was able to order after standing at the counter for about a minute, and that doesn't bug me a bit. I ordered a catfish (filet) and wings combo. Combos come with two slices of white bread, coleslaw, and a choice of fries or rice. I opted for fries. Pricetag: $7.95. The cashier told me "it'll be ready in thirteen minutes." I was impressed by the precision. Twelve-and-a-half minutes later, my order was ready. I accepted an offer of hot sauce and made for the door. When I got home about ten minutes later, I opened the container and got to business. The fries were crispy, and perfectly seasoned. I'm normally a big fan of ketchup on fries, but these simply didn't need it. It seemed like they may have been lightly battered, but I couldn't tell for sure. The catfish, now ten minutes out of the fryer, was still piping hot. It had a great, mild flavor, and was delicious dipped in hot sauce. Unlike the fries and fish, the wings had cooled a bit. They were pretty tasty, but not "damn that's good" good like the fish. I filled up quick enough that I didn't touch the bread and had only a taste of the coleslaw. It was coleslaw. As you might expect, the food does hit you pretty hard, so if you're in the mood for a light salad, this might not fit the bill. Checked this place out after the Yelp email came out -- surprisingly good! It is in a sketchy neighborhood, but this place was packed on Saturday night! Even though I called in, it still took about 10-15 minutes even after I arrived. It is a lot of food for the price, and they are quite heavy handed on the seasoning. I think it's a lemon pepper seasoning. For my 2 combo dinner, I ordered cornmeal coated pollock and gizzards. It also came with 2 slices of white bread underneath, fries, and coleslaw (you can order double fries in lieu of the coleslaw). It also came with a drink! All for $10. I cannot express the love I have for the season that tops the dishes. It's like a secret formula of greatness! This place was recommended to me by my co-workers. We were debating about places with really good addicting food. A simultaneous "Fish Express!" Was shouted throughout the room. Now, all I can say is holy freakin' crap was this the best damn fish that I have ever had! It was absolutely amazing! I read a few reviews online and they were mixed about the place, but, everyone raved about the fish and the seasoning. When I got everything I accepted the offer of the hot-sauce, catsup, tartar, vinegar, etc... The food doesn't need it. Not even the fries. They are that good. The batter is corn meal - perfect! After driving by this brightly colored restaraunt every day for a year, I finally decided that in my last week in Kalamazoo, I'd give it a try. With no reviews on yelp, a Google search turned up one blogger's account of an interesting but rewarding visit, and I couldn't wait to try the seasoning he raved about. My friend K and I stopped in around 8 on a Monday. The small dining room was empty and I thought that meant we'd be in and out, but no such luck. The restaurant takes orders by phone and recently started delivering and as it turns out, calling your order in ahead seems to be the best option. The one girl working the register was answering and juggling calls on both phone lines for more than 10 minutes before she even acknowledged that I was standing in front of her with a credit card in my hand ready to order. IMO, customers who bother to come in should get priority over phone calls. When I finally ordered I asked for a small fried cod with fries and cole slaw, a little less than $7. I should have put in K's order, too, because she had another 10 minutes of waiting to get her order in around the phone calls, which literally never stopped. I actually got my food before K even ordered. Three big pieces of cod were served with wonder bread, two cole slaws, and no fries. I took it back to the counter and the girl swapped out a slaw for a huge mound of fries and apologized. When we finally dug into our food is when things really got good. The fish was amazing, flaky, crispy, well seasoned.. probably the best fried fish I've ever had. The fries were also delicious, perfectly crisp and also hit with the same incredible seasoning. The serving size was excellent, especially given that it was the small platter. Despite the slow service, which I really think they need to fix with another person answering phones at dinner time, the food was amazing. There's also seating available inside but no one eats there, you could have traveled 20 mins to get there, but you still grab ya food and eat it in the car. But outside of that, I make sure I get Fish Express every time I make a trip back home to Kalamazoo, even though we live across town now, it's worth it. Every time. To the black woman with the attitude I did an online order and the receipt said text my name and order number and I'll be notified when to come in so I followed the instructions. Last time I did an online order and came at the time it was supposed to be ready I still had to wait another 30-40 mins. I was 2 mins down the road at Gull Rd and Riverview when the text told me to come in and a gentleman was placing his order which made me approx 6 mins in after the text. I got attitude directed towards me because "I texted I was outside and you didn't see me out there" a lie I didn't say I was outside I followed the directions on my receipt.
