We ordered the 12 pieces bucket for 20$, which is a better deal than KFC and the taste felt less greasy than KFC. The service was extra and beyond! Smiley faces, gentle attitude, patient and welcoming. Which is very impressive and unlike other fried chicken places. I will consider myself a regular to this place!! This Chicken Coop is absolutely the best! Staff are awesome and it is the friendliest place in town! The luncheon specials are great and the food is so good! I have grown up on Chicken Coop and it often sparks fond childhood memories of my dad racing home on his lunch break in his white uniform from UPJOHNS with a bucket in his hands! I miss the original A Frame building on Portage road. But more importantly, I really LOVE this chicken. I have since moved to Florida 8 years ago and seriously crave this place. Each time I visit, I MUST go a couple times, almost to the point of embarrassment and I have even had my family bring me a frozen stash when driving to visit! All you need is dry ice. The home of the Northern Chicken is and always will be my favorite chicken. It's always fresh, juicy and hot and everyone is always friendly, regardless of the location. They have other wonderful things on the menu like perch and smelt, but now that I am limited, it's chicken all the way!! If I could get these southerners to understand the Northern chicken thing, I would beg to open a location in Tampa! So if anyone is driving down or wants to ship me some, hit me up!!! read more

Oh my goodness. I don't write five star reviews lightheartedly. I was on the way to Steak and Shake with my family and called a last minute audible and stopped at this place because I bias towards family-owned businesses. It was one of the best happy accidents of my restaurant customer career. We ordered clam strips as a group appetizer. Fabulous move. The strips were crunchy and flavorful. Get lots of lemon juice for them! My elderly mother only eats clam strips at her favorite drive-in beach at a tiki hut on the beach in Florida, and she says these were equally as good, which is really an impressive testimonial. We also had chicken tenders - gigantic and meaty. The fried chicken - which is this delightful place's namesake - was fantastic. How is KFC still in business here in Kalamazoo/Portage? The mashed potatoes and gravy and potato wedges were respectable, but not the superstars of this meal. The macaroni and cheese was good-not-great. Service was better than I could have expected. Funny gentlemen who were delighted to have new customers. This place is seriously a must-try for anyone who winds up in this part of Michigan. read more

Well, there's a place near Zion National Park in Utah at the Thunderbird Lodge where the "ho'made" fried chicken is as close to heaven as the location's lofty altitude, and the local San Miguel Mission Deli (CA) used to have hit or miss the best fried chicken ever, but it's not served anymore, so back to Chicken Coop, it was the best fried chicken I'd had in some time. read more

Called in my order at 11:45 for a 12:15 pickup today. It was not ready until 12:32. I went inside to pay for my order. Another two customers came in soon after me, neither wearing masks. The person at the cash register was not wearing a mask either. I commented that I would feel a lot better if mask usage was required. The cashier commented that he had a medical condition and did not address the problem of unmasked customers in line. These individuals were laughing about the situation. This place literally looked the same on the inside, I even sat at my old booth! The memories came flushing back! The same owners since as long as I can remember! I love how things stay the same! If it ain't broke, don't fix it! They have coupons in the Super books, sometimes in the Sunday paper, they always have meal deals. You barely need them because they prices are so affordable. They also have a fridge with various drinks, soda, juice, Gatorade and water. Annnnd they have pie and GINORMOUS cookies! Who wouldn't love that??? The workers are so friendly and go out of their way to help you when you have questions and bring your food to your table for you! Well i watch her microwave all my sides cause warmers were empty already. She bag my food and handed it to me. I told her that i wanted it for dine in. She said no cant eat in were mopping dining room floor. I told her that wanted refund and not the food then because i didnt want take out that would be very cold as i live a bit from them. Looking for a chicken shack like place, and this was one of the first options in Portage. They have a huge selection from chicken to fish and even liver (if that's your thing). I got the chicken wing meal with two sides and cornbread. The chicken was good, a little hard fried, the macaroni n cheese was not good, the corn was good, but the cornbread was the best! Went here Thurs 29th. Two customers ahead of me. Ordered 8pcmixed meat box and livers. Ten minutes later she asks if one breast and the rest in small pieces okay. I said no it wasn't but give me my livers and I'm gone. She says nothing and I wait five to ten minuts more and the livers are brought out and put under the warmer. By this time five people after me have been waited on and served. She now takes my order and dumps it back into the pan and serves even more people. Twenty four minutes later she gives me a fresh order and livers that are three solid lumps and range from burnt to barely chewable. This was the third and last time for lousey service.
