Curry Chicken with Choice of Rice, Jerk Chicken with Choice of Rice and Caribbean green beans
Hillary S.

I feel like since Covid there are a lot of places closed on Sunday and was super excited that I was able to find this place open on a Sunday afternoon! Wanted something unique and it definitely was. Big portions and tons of flavor! The chicken curry has potatoes in it soaking up all that curry flavor. The jerk chicken was just spicy enough for me, it had a nice complex flavor with a little kick, but not enough to drown out the taste of it. We also tried the Caribbean beans, which were good, nothing fancy. Very cute inside the restaurant, colorful and Caribbean. The service was very friendly and helped me pick out the perfect meals. I highly recommend it! Coming back soon for the jerk brisket and goat curry!

We were met with a smile and asked what she could help us with! This started our meal out perfectly! We traveled for an hour to check this place out and it was worth every second. The food was delicious, the place was incredibly clean and the service was above and beyond.

Store was open on 2nd try. First impression: Empty. Lights are off. Dark inside. One friendly man running the show. Smells delicious. Greeted promptly. Store quiet, except for quiet talking among clientele. There were other customers already ordering. I ordered jerk chicken and curry chicken. $16 each meal. Chef disappeared into the dark kitchen. Order took about 10 minutes. Jamaican trinkets were on sale in a glass case. Bob Marley earrings, etc. Huge airbrush mural on the wall was nice. *Some quiet reggae music would have added to the ambiance. I took my food home and split the 2 orders 3 ways with my 2 teenagers. The CHICKEN was very tender, almost too tender. Nice flavor. Dryer than I expected. Jerk flavor was preferred, but curry was also good. (Better cold) COLE SLAW was great with a fresh citrus taste. The RICE was thick and pasty like oatmeal, and had some fruits in it. It took up half the tray, and most of it landed in the trash. Even The donut or CARNIVAL, is interesting, as were the plantains. We are not familiar with Jamaican cuisine, so can't judge it for authenticity. The flavor was a nice experience, but not really our thing. Good luck. Nice guy! I'm probably just too Caucasian for this place. ;-)

This is my new favorite spot in GR! The owner Nick is a Swiss Army knife kind of guy - he cooks,…read morehe greets, he answers the phone, he runs the register...truly everything!!! His restaurant is located in a strip mall that is never busy, which is great for parking options. The GPS might direct you to McDonalds, but it's located in the strip mall right behind McDonalds. The restaurant itself is bright and always clean (including the bathroom!). There are a few tables and a couch to eat inside, but I've also ordered to-go and the food travels well down the street. Now for the FOOD! Ummm I have tried nearly everything on the menu at this point and haven't found anything I dislike. The Samosas are a great appetizer (deep fried ground beef in a thin pastry dough) and the super super spicy chili oil is perfect on them...but just one drop for me! The tilapia is epic. For being a whole fried fish, it is super meaty, juicy, and flavorful. I've found that sometimes this method makes it harder to eat, but unlike a red snapper, there isn't a whole lot of effort to avoid bones. Make sure you get a side of rice and beans, because it's not your average staple. And the plantains are amazing as well, I like to dip them in the green sauce. The fried turkey is delicious, but I try to eat it first because it can dry out a little bit if it sits awhile, but that is typical for anything fried. The Caribbean pasta and chicken are not my favorite of all the things I've tried, but I wouldn't classify them as bad. Let me start a new paragraph in honor of the star of the show: THE CHICKEN WINGS. Listen people, these are the best chicken wings in Grand Rapids. No, you can't choose among 100 flavors like at a 'wing spot', but in terms of tenderness, this meat doesn't just fall off the bone...it plummets off. The flavors are hard for me to pinpoint but I get a lot of garlicky, salty, herby, buttery vibes. They don't need a morsel of sauce, but if you must, the green sauce is great. Nick is so warm and welcoming and genuinely gets to know each of his customers and makes sure you are happy with your food. Even when I get takeout, he insists on showing me inside each to-go box to confirm my order. Even if you don't think Caribbean-African fusion cuisine is your thing, I promise this food is worth trying and Nick is a joy to support!

We were greeted right away when we walked in by Nick, the owner. He is so friendly, kind, and his smile is infectious! He told us about some of the popular menu items and we planned what we wanted to order. Nate and I got the whole tilapia, jerk wings, and a side of plantains. Carly got the same thing as well as some other items to-go to take home for her husband. We sat down and enjoyed the bright and cheerful space as Nick started on our food. He was the only one working so we figured we'd have time to catch up which was nice. Nick asked if we eat beef, and we said yes so he said something about making us a traditional dish - ok! We're all adventurous foodies so we were excited. Nick's energy was infectious and he was so excited that we were open to trying new things. He brought out some flaky pastries stuffed with ground beef - sort of like an empanada. They were so tasty! The meat was flavorful and he encouraged us to try adding some of the spicy chili oil to the accompanying coleslaw and then eating it all together. The chili oil totally added a kick of spice that lingered but wasn't overpowering. Just a drop or two was enough! Our wings came out next - Carly said they might be her favorite wings in all of GR! They were spiced but not spicy hot, and perfectly fried. The jerk rub was a little salty but the flavors were great. I would definitely get them again. The plantains were some of the best I've had! Sometimes they can be dry or tough, but these were crisp on the outside and tender inside, slightly sweet and delicious! The fish came out last and it's a show stopper - the whole fish is deep fried to perfection and a huge portion to share between two people. It was juicy and not overcooked, with beans, rice, and an herbaceous green sauce to drizzle over everything. I loved trying this fun hole in the wall spot with delicious food - I encourage you to try it too! It's unique and interesting, with flavors you don't find everywhere. Plus, Nick is so wonderful and truly made me feel like I was an old friend dining at his home. I can't wait to try the chicken and pasta dishes!

This was actually my second visit here - I never wrote a review of my first time eating at Caracas Bistro about a year and a half ago. I am quite sure I ordered one of their arepas during my first visit as I am an arepa FANATIC! It was very busy when we visited Sunday during brunch in September 2026. The only two waiters worked their BUTTS off, taking care of everyone. 10/10 for our funny and caring server, that's for sure. This time, my boyfriend and I ordered the following for our lunch. I ordered us a side of yuca fries ($4) with guasacaca sauce ($0.50) for an appetizer. Yuca fries are pretty filling - we received 4 pieces in our order. My bf ordered a custom Venezuelan Bowl with chorizo sausage ($16) while I had the Caracas Sampler ($15). The sampler included two mini arepas (I got minis of the pabellon and the rumbera arepas - both meat heavy types), two tequenos, and two cachapas, corn cakes topped with a soft, melted Venezuelan white cheese. Surprisingly, my favorite of the trio were the tequenos, basically fried mozzarella sticks wrapped in what tasted like Pillsbury croissant dough! Yummy yummy! Five stars all around for our great waiter, great food, and great prices! Our total bill after tax and tip was a little over $45. I didn't see a credit card fee on the bill, just fyi. If you crave ethnic food in the South Bend area, absolutely come here! Or if you crave instant diabetes, get a crazy milkshake! We saw quite a few people ordering those during our visit here. No idea how they could finish them. Lol.
