Ty’s Joint - Gumbo greens and Mac - Southern Near Me - Kalamazoo, Michigan

I really did enjoy the food so I went back 2 days later and treated my parents. We were originally planning to dine in but decided to do carryout instead because they were really busy. I wanted to try the pork chops but they were out, so I got the rib tips with gumbo greens and dressing for the sides. My dad got the same, and my mom got the fried catfish with yams and turnip greens for her sides. I thought the rib tips were good and I would order them again. The dressing was just "okay" and unfortunately I bit into a large chunk of fat from the turkey meat in the dressing so that didn't help. The real star was the gumbo greens. My dad was also not a fan of the dressing, but he said he would have gotten the gumbo greens for both his sides if he had known how good they were. My mom enjoyed her food as well as the strawberry crunch cake I suggested she get. I am not sure if I missed it my first visit, but when my order was being rung up I noticed a cash and non-cash price flash on the screen. I did not see any signage on the door about the extra fee for paying by card, and the cashier did not mention it. That is such a big pet peeve for me. Had I known in advance, I would have come prepared to pay with cash. I am sure I will return again, but restaurants really need to be transparent about these excess fees. read more

Food was stupendous! Service was odd. Maybe someone called off? Walked in to no one. And remained that way for a couple minutes. Then someone finally greeted us and gave us menus. Once we decided what we wanted, went back up to counter and had to wait again for several minutes before someone showed up again to take order. We were the only customers and it was at typical lunch hour. But again, food was stupendous. read more

The food was delicious. Prices were good. There was a mishap at the register and they missed one of our meals. To my surprise, they fixed my issue quickly without me even asking them to. Music was relaxing. Overall an excellent experience (PS: they have the best catfish and mac n chs)! read more

I have yet to have a comeback experience here and I honestly gave it another shot because I grew up with the owner and went to school with his siblings. Therefore I was trying to support, but each time I have gotten the same result. Fish fried so hard that the WHOLE piece isn't edible. The ends of each piece is so hard biting is impossible. For that to happen each time I order is suspect. I may try one more time and order something different. But one thing that really upsets me is paying a premium price for some food and the prices not matching the finished product. read more

One my fave fir great soul food dishes. My fave is fried chicken with side of greens and mac n cheese!

This location is more of a local dive. The locals know everyone, and the surrounding neighborhood is very busy. I would actually give this location a 3.5 but rounded up because the food outshines all of my complaints. The cons were the very limited parking, the use of paper and plastic ware. Lastly, the in restaurant service was extremely SLOW and when I finally got my drink order there was lint or paper floating around in it. I will say, though, that the staff was VERY NICE, and they were apologetic about the wait times. It should be noted that each order is made at the time of the order. The food was phenomenal and the overall vibe of the location was very relaxed. This is a location that you must order ahead for pick up or dine in ONLY if you have an hour to wait. read more

Absolutely loved the food and decor. I placed my order and went to have drinks at the winery next door. The owner was very polite and made sure we had everything we needed. The lamb chops and gumbo greens were well seasoned, the cornbread was homemade and delicious. The catfish was fried to perfection. The food was well worth the price. The menu had so many good choices, I just ordered a little bit of everything. They host events in the weekends, I will definitely be back! read more

A friend told me about some gumbo greens he had gotten from Ty's Joint on my last day in Kalamazoo. I had to taste them before I headed back to Detroit. Ty said all of the sides were good and they were. I told him I sure don't want to be speeding up and down I 94 because I'm strung out on his food. The food was fat and good. Though the dining area was packed the service was wonderful. My only wish was that tartar sauce was more abundant. I received one packet for my dinner. Still it was flavorful enough without it. The sauce would have taken it to the top! read more

Today two of my friends and I went to Ty's Joint. All three found it to be clean. The food that we tried was fried perch, bluegill and catfish. The sides were coleslaw, fries, fried green tomatoes, collard, greens, mac and cheese.Turkey and chicken sandwiches. The coleslaw, macaroni and cheese and collard greens were Excellent. Too full to eat the fish however in the evening I finished the macaroni and cheese and a piece of catfish which was excellent also. The staff were very friendly. It was disappointing that they had No sweets. I was looking forward to peach cobbler. Very poor selection of soda. No diet drinks. The condiments were not in view so I didn't know they had vinegar, hot sauce or tarter sauce. read more

Having lived in Mississippi I take my southern food *very* seriously. I'm happy to report that Ty's is the absolute best. The batter they use for the fried catfish and chicken is better than anything you have ever tasted and every item on the menu is sublime. I will be dreaming about those green beans until I eat them again. This will definitely be a weekly order in our house from now on! I can't recommend them any higher. 12/10! read more

The food has always been good. But we were up there this past weekend and my aunt picked up takeout and I have to say this was the best catfish I've ever had. This was not the only thing, the dressing was good, the sweet potatoes were better than mine & everyone loves mine , greens had a little kick and onion rings were on point!! So good!!! The potato salad was average but not worth dinging them a point. I would suggest trying them out with my whole chest. read more

We absolutely loved Ty's Joint :) on our visit to Kalamazoo, MI! We came & ate there more than once! This is definitely a must try if you want amazing home cooked Southern style soul food! The ambience is a laid back cozy yet sophisticated beautiful decor inside great for families! Both the food and customer service were phenomenal! I really loved the 4 piece whole fried chicken wings dinner which was freshly cooked and hot out the grease reminding me of homemade fried chicken made with love seasoned perfect not bland! The fried shrimp I also tried was fresh hot out the grease, crispy, & well seasoned also!!! The portion sizes were filling & great for the value as both my husband and I were stuffed. All the different sides were great such as the yams, greens, & mac & cheese! We met the owner both times during our visit and he was very personable & customer service oriented with attentiveness. We didn't try everything in the menu but I think any menu items would be great with the home cooked vibe!!! We definitely plan on coming back often! This is definitely a unique wonderful place for great soul food! read more

Great spot on Portage Rd! The interior is beautiful, comfortable, and clean. Warm wood furniture and tables, Edison bulb light fixtures, R&B playing in the background = welcoming & relaxing. There are dominoes & cards available to play while you wait for your order. The service is fantastic. They even recommended a different combo for the food I ordered to help me save money. That is old school customer service & integrity, which is uncommon these days. Now, the most important part, the food: catfish on point with a seasoned dredge that was light and delicious. Collards with turkey bits, well seasoned, a little heat & perfectly tender. Lastly, hand dipped ice cream is available and you don't see that many places now either. Portions were ample for the money paid. Yum! The only thing I'm sad about is that I didn't come here sooner! read more

Stopped in for a tasty lunch today: jumbo fried catfish, 2 pieces and each as big as an XL glove, which came with a side and cornbread. For my side, I had a mound of mac and cheese that filled a cereal bowl! Wish they served tea and not just punch or soft drinks. Portions are generous, so bring an appetite. Come early if you want a dessert...they were out of two that I asked about. read more

Wow I've been wanting to come here for awhile and glad I finally did! I had the chicken and waffles and they were great- and only $10 for a yummy waffle and two perfect wings. My husband had perch and catfish with Mac and cheese and greens- everything was delicious. Great seasoning, cooked/fried perfectly, even the Mac and cheese was moist not dry. The greens were delicious. Had a piece of caramel cake for dessert and that was amazing too. I want to eat everything on the menu. Sorry not sorry. Staff were friendly too. Will definitely be back. Thanks for making such great food! read more

I love this authentic sound food restaurant. I love their sweet potato pie!!! I also like their burgers that's very well served.

Love, love LOVED, Ty's! Just the right atmosphere I like homey, yet sophisticated. Expansive menu and Res Faygo, c'mon man..... my love language as a lil ole Detroit kat. The pictures are true and yes that is a four piece chicken dinner and no, I could not eat it all in one setting. The chicken was fresh out the grease, the Mac was tasty and well seasoned. The greens (with turkey) had a kick ass pot liquor. Cornbread was cornbready, but I was not there for that. All in all, next time I'm in Kzoo, no doubt I will be back to Ty's. The neighborhood feel, the attention to detail and the delicious food will all bring me back! read more
