Aldi has a pretty good thing going. They fit a pretty good selection into a small space. One thing that is nice about them is that a good percentage of their items are brands and varieties you won't find elsewhere. Now, Kirkwood products kind of fit the "you get what you pay for" adage, but once you get a feel for what works and what doesn't you can get some quirky items at a fair price. Their meat selection is a bit hit-or-miss and subject to change, but it's good overall. There's alsways the rushed feeling at the cash register--you sure can't say the cashiers are slow. They're usually hyper enough to make me nervous, but I guess that's a good problem to have. The rent-a-cart thing is infantilizing, but I generally just grab a box that's sitting around in the store somewhere. read more

Aldi of the past is just a somewhat dinky discount grocery store but recently we've been seeing Instagram accounts and blogs raving about Aldi's private labels....it got us very curious. This store was super clean and bright. Yes you need a quarter to rent the shopping carts but the whole process was straightforward and simple. Especially during the holidays there were a lot of very interesting products to try. Good selection of cheese, cookies, chocolates...and everything at such a low price! I am obsessed with coming occasionally during our stay in Michigan just to see what new items they have! The checkout process is so fast, and the bagging groceries yourself after paying also expedited the whole experience. Love it! read more

I have become an Aldi fan in recent months, having spent most of my life going to Meijer for everything. Convenience sometimes takes precedent over a little savings, but I can't believe the savings I get here. There are so many things that I can say about this little grocery that are positive and very few negatives. I find the fruits and vegetables to be as fresh as anywhere else in town, and sometimes they can be as much as 1/2 the cost, which I can't believe each time I score a deal like that. I recently picked up a container of kiwi (maybe 12 of them in the pack) for about $2.50, and then when I stopped by Meijer on the same evening, a single kiwi was $.79... (making my savings like $7 for the quantity that I got). There are some pretty cool items here too that you can't find anywhere else, and I like having that experience. All-in-all, this is definitely the place to do some of your shopping! read more

We flew home 25 May/Saturday afternoon & drove straight to Aldi's to stock our kitchen. We went to the 1st lane behind a lady with an overflowing cart whe was handing one item at a time to the very tall cashier. We put the bar on the belt & began putting our things on the belt to be ready. The cashier snapped not to rush him. Out items were already on the belt. He stood up & over the belt & shoved our items back & some of our fresh foods off the belt! We waited Rang out Left very uncomfortable. This young man was intimidating & violent toward us. read more

I am not sure of the exact date of the opening, but I have been doing some grocery shopping once a week since opening. The prices are half of Meijer's, but they have a small selection. The major turn off though is the small size that is not organized. They continually move items around the store so it is difficult to find and displays are just piled up. You also don't get friendly service like Meijer where I have been shopping for a long time where you really get to know the cashiers. Aldi is no nonsense with no talking, they are fast though. A plus is their gluten free brand, liveGfree, that I don't think people know about. The wraps are very good. The mixes are all good, the pizza is not as good as mine, but it is pretty darn good. The brownie mix was just voted the best. I have made it for school events and children love it, so do I. The rosemary crackers are one of the best out there, you don't have to be gluten free to truly like them. The frozen items are not too bad either. The corn pasta is good with a great price. They also have many organic items. The organic pasta sauce for $1.99 is very good, better than pricier brands. The Simply Nature brand is good also, free of chemicals. Bacon and deli meat don't have nitrates. Another con though is they may only have a item for a short time and never have it again. I found very good feta similar to french feta, for a great price for a month or so and they never sold it again. You have to be open and flexible while shopping at Aldi. If you don't mind taking the time to insert a quarter for a cart, that you get back when returned, knowing you can't purchase your entire grocery list, bag your groceries and there isn't a customer service. If you have a problem with an item you have to stand in line to return it or exchange it. If you know that going in, I think it is a good store to get some healthy food and save some money. You can use the savings to try a new restaurant and yelp about it. Or treat yourself to a latte at your favorite cafe. read more

I love shopping at this Aldi in Portage, MI BUT the last few times I have been there, people not having masks on in the store. The sign says wear a mask and their website also . With the shopping carts, there is no sanitizer anymore in the entrance to disinfect your cart. Prices are good, and there is a lot of different types of groceries but are they slacking off on their procedures. Usually only one cashier available when there are lots of people in line. Aldi's you can do better! read more

I was impressed by the way they handled the covid situation to start. Only allowing so many in and doing a fantastic job of cart disinfecting. That's subsided quite a bit, but they still have items to let you disinfect your own cart. As far as the items they sell, you will save a lot of money on most things, and most items seem to be of good quality. As others have said, they do seem to all of a sudden, not have what you bought there last time, and never do again. We shop here every week and will continue to, mostly because of the savings. It's hard to beat $1.59 for a gallon of milk, or $.68 for a doz. eggs. read more

Adequate selection-can usually find whatever I want but only one choice usually. Good selection of organic. And the prices are unbeatable anywhere - even the lowest price big box store. Every once in a while the checkout line gets backed up but usually they add another person to get the line down. Be sure and bring your own bags. read more

Aldi has become one of my favorite places to go since I started shopping here a couple of months ago. It's kind of addicting. If you're looking for a super customer-oriented experience with employees all over you, this is not the place to go; Aldi is NOT your typical grocery store. They only carry the most popular items in grocery stores (as their house brand), they're only open the most shopped hours, you pay a quarter to get a cart (which are all up by the store, not in the lot, and are in good repair), and you bag your own stuff. I love it. This store has been consistently great. I can get probably 99% of my groceries here, and just about everything I've tried has been great (their grated parmesan is no good and one of the yogurts was not good, but to be fair, I've tried the brand name version and didn't like that either). It does take a couple of visits to get used to the layout and where everything is and SOME things move, but generally, the layout has been the same every time. I concur with Diane that the prices are about half of Meijer prices--I was floored when my $5 three pack of bell peppers was at Aldi for $2.49. read more

Normally this would make ends meet by Cardio workout shopping. Rainy day with ornery staff and rotten meat. Yes I said ROTTEN. All 90% lean beef in 1lb tube cooler is thawed and rotten not to be trusted. Purchased this morning @ $3.79/tube dated "good by 7-25-19" should be pulled. So much to cleanliness unless it is gas packed. This is not the first time I have questioned the brand. DO Not eat this meat as mine was rotten through middle and bled all over. was not the 85-15% as that could be found in freezer. Didn't used to believe Aldi would pull a save-a-lot as they've been known to sell expired packages. This could be dangerous and nonrefundable probably to EBT budget. Stench so bad had to be tripple bagged maggots for dumpster. Aldi should be praised for opening this store in a place where food poisoning was resteraunt rampid in Portage MI 49002. Think twice about anything outside of freezers. Had some ground Turkey 3wks prior Same nasty condition. Moldy! Shoppers ..if you pull something; don't shelve it foreign to its healthy domain. This Aldi is pretty new and has some awesome items. I find that I save a lot of money here! The store is always clean. The cashiers are really fast. Don't forget to bring your own reusable bags, although they do have some to purchase if you forget. read more

So I still don't like the new store layout, but the things I like about Aldi I like so much that I won't deduct any star-age for that minor wrinkle. Here's some pro tips: speedy zoom zoom zoom! Don't clog up the aisles, be sure to bring a quarter to "check out" a cart, bring your own bags, unload onto the conveyor belt as quickly as you can (because the cashier can check you out faster than you can unload every time). Let people go ahead of you if they only have a couple items -- I spend less time in Aldi in 2 months than I used to spend in one visit to Meijer. I'm thrilled to see all the organic and gluten free options expanding all the time. It's a great place to shop if you're on a keto, gluten-free, paleo, etc. diet that's mostly fresh stuff and meat because the price is right on those items at Aldi. The staff is super efficient. I do hate it when I fall in love with an item they carry (like the lemon hummus) and it then disappears or when they're out of basic staples like popcorn kernels but overall, this place is my jam. My typical in and out time with a full cart of groceries is less than 10 minutes. La! read more

Let me start by saying that I usually love Aldi! I've been shopping at Aldi for years. However, at the Portage location, I've seen moldy fruit and bread numerous times. If you do buy fruit that looks good, it goes bad within a couple of days. I really like all of their other food, but they really need fresher produce and bread. read more
