A disappointment. Figured Sunday the buffet would be bigger, and was afraid it would be crowded, at noon. Far from it- a few customers, one couple with a noisy kid. Not the restaurant's fault but didn't add to the experience. It's a small place. And a small buffet. Smaller than other Indian ones in town. The basic standards: tikka, tandoori, curry chicken and lamb, saag paneer, a few others. Halwah. The food was pretty good all in all, though the samosas weren't- weren't samosas, anyway, not like any I've seen. Thin and cold. Bones in the curries so be prepared. Good, fresh, big naan. Shocked, by the good reviews here. Apparently, I need to try something other than the buffet. I have been there twice & was not impressed, even for a buffet. The free Naan, is maybe the only redeeming grace. All the food is basically flavorless & does not have a large amount of options. I cannot say that I find the place to appear overly clean. This is a review for their buffet only. The buffet was a bit limited. Mostly vegetarian dishes with about 3 chicken dishes and one goat curry. I thought the curry of the chicken tikka masala was good but when I tried the actual chicken, it didn't taste fresh. It had an aftertaste and interesting smell. Same with the tandoori chicken. Others in our party thought the food didn't have enough salt or spices. The price wasn't that bad though. Their naans were very good and made fresh! The one server was pretty nice and accommodating. We decided to try Mehak for dinner this evening as it was close by. The space is nice and colorful with a Bollywood musical playing on the TV over the bar area. We were greeted by our server who sat us at a booth. The menu was extensive. And the prices weren't too bad. We started off with vegetable samosas, which were good. Can't really go wrong with samosas. For dinner, we got the butter chicken, aloo ghobi and the goat curry. The best of the three was the butter chicken. The aloo ghobi didn't have much taste. We asked for mild so perhaps the lack of spices made it bland. The goat curry was good except we got a bunch of bony pieces. Service was good and food was prepared in decent time. My wife saw this new spot(a couple of months) and took me out for a spontaneous dinner. Plenty of parking and easy access. Decorated colorfully and Indian pop music playing at the right volume. The smells are wonderful. Very good casual vibe with plenty of seating options. We were greeted quickly with a sincere and warm smile. I think this is so important. As things get tougher financially for some, a business showing gratitude for your patronage feels so wonderful. We were brought water and a menu and they were attentive. When the staff is attentive, keep in mind that they likely won't rush away from one customer to the next. So it shouldn't be a fast food pace in my opinion. They did great there. We ordered the mushroom lamb dish and a chicken (so sorry) "fajita" type dish. Again so sorry for my ignorance I forget the name. Both were full of flavor, presented well, and were quite filling. There were people from all walks of life inside while were there. Different cultures and family sizes. There were some friends, a couple on a date, and a huge family. I'm so energized by this, it is one of my favorite things about my city. My reviews aren't to be compared to one another. They are completely based on how did the place deliver on what it claimed to be, and for me, this casual place left me feeling happy, full and optimistic. So to that I say, we'll done. Keep it up. Mehak is an exceptional restaurant. The food is made with care and passion. My husband and I came for the lunch buffet. The buffet is from 11-2:30 pm each day and cost around $13. I had the tikka masala, lamb curry, tandoori chicken, and potatoes. Everything was delicious: the chicken and lamb were tender and the sauces were savory and perfectly spiced. The staff were helpful and attentive, which made the experience even better! If you are in Cleveland Avenue/161 area, I highly recommend that you visit Mehak. We ate here three days ago, and I can't understand why it isn't packed every night. Our food was possibly the best Indian meal I've ever eaten, and we eat at a lot of Indian restaurants. The portions were great (just look how huge the Naan bread was!), with plenty to take home for another meal. The spicing was subtle , but please don't take that to mean bland. It was just such a delicious mix of flavors that none of them smacked you in the face. And the heat levels (mild, medium, or hot) were perfectly suited to the three in our party. There are two things to be aware of. One is there is no bar, at least not with alcohol, at least not yet. The other is the chef formerly cooked at Aab, which is apparently a well-known restaurant in Columbus. We don't live there so aren't familiar with the place. Anyway, if you like Indian food, you should try Mehak. I'm already looking forward to our next jaunt to Columbus so we can eat there again! read more

In the notes section I requested limited packaging (plastic, etc.) and was thrilled my order was placed in a cardboard box without utensils or double wrapped containers. A most delicious dinner at this newer family owned Indian place in northeast Columbus. We ate here for dinner and had the chaat appetizer, dal soup, paneer mahkani, chicken vindaloo, and butter nan. Every single thing was phenomenal tasting! The nan was without a doubt the best we've ever had anywhere, anytime. Deeply satisfying and highly recommended. The only negative I would mention is the high prices. All the categories-appetizers, entrees, breads, etc. seemed to be at higher price points than comparable establishments. Given that the neighborhood is modest and working class (I know cause I lived there for many years), being this expensive is out of keeping with the area and may be a problem for this establishment's future. I understand they do have a weekday lunch buffet for $12.99 so that may be the most affordable way to try it out. So please try this great restaurant while you can. Authentic food!! Let them know if you want it spicy or mild. You can always add spice but can't take it away. Goat Curry, Lamb Korma and for vegetarian I highly recommend the Paneer Makhni, Mater Paneer, Aloo Cholly and Saag Cholly. Oh and one more we always get is the Chicken Mushroom. Also the lunch buffet they have every day is well worth the price. You get buttered Naan bread with the buffet. Samosas are delicious!! Definitely get yourself a mango lassi !! I've heard good things about Mehak, so I met a friend for lunch. They have a lunch buffet EVERY day of the week, and glancing over the offerings, it looked like a good deal for $12.99. The naan is on the thinner side, came out hot and tore nicely to sop up all the sauces and juices. Excellent carrots, peas, and cabbage mix side dish. I've never had this before - very flavorful and not spicy. Tender tandoori chicken was tasty. I also enjoyed a paneer dish - didn't catch the name - it was super good (reference my picture for dish). For future visits, I'd pass on their Chicken Tikka Masala, as the flavor was on the thin side and not a personal favorite, imo. They had Saag Aloo, which is potatoes and spinach if I remember correctly, but the dish didn't have any visible chunks; if they pulverize their potatoes, I couldn't see any that way either. Either way, I like spinach and liked the simple flavor of this dish. The buffet did have a salad section that housed five different chutneys. The onion one is hot, fyi. Their mango fruit chutney was amazeballs! I was full and completely forgot to try their desserts - rice pudding and a second one that started with an R I believe - which both looked delish. Service was decent. We did have to wave down the gentleman for more naan and checks, but it worked out fine. read more

A friend and I first tried Mehak after reading a review in Columbus Underground. I've been back with other friends several times, and the food is always terrific. Rarely to do you find a family-run restaurant of this quality: the father is in the kitchen, his son is the server, and the last time I went with family, the wife/mother was there too. This place is the real deal in terms of food, and they have transformed a generic building in front of a shopping center with bright colors and parasols hanging upside down. The traditional Indian metal serving pots and dishes are equally beautiful. Mehak is never crowded at dinner time -- in fact it is difficult to understand why more people haven't discovered it.
