Who said women can't give men red roses? I'd say, once upon a time, in a faraway land (seriously) called Seattle...
I'm a incurable romantic. I'm fortunate that The Dude is, too. I am also a girl in all the sense of the word, who loves to get gifts on special occasions. My lovely man is more into the "less is more" philosophy. This makes gift hunting for him a bit steep.
Given that fact, this year I got him a Lighthouse Coffee mug (which he loved) and a card in Spanish for Valentine's Day. Around the same time, he cleaned his closet as well. He was genuinely happy.
I thought I achieved my goal with my present. But...the story doesn't stop there. On February 14th, The Dude proposed and gave me a beautiful engagement ring! Do the math, please. Mug-ring. Ring-mug. It's like pears and...one single, skinny mosquito.
Holly molly...The Dude made clear that his mug was as good as a spectacular moment of happiness and a ring. But when I went back to thinking about my modest gift, I felt like an Arrested Development character drifting and gazing down, while The Peanuts "Christmas Time" plays in the background. Otherwise, I was in bliss...and then the mug came back to haunt me...(Christmas tiiime, la, la, la, la, lalaaaa!)
Two days later, I was running an errand in Pioneer Square. Thanks to the no-jaywalking policy, I ran into this lovely corner shop. I love flowers and spring, I love summer and green! Luckily, it was the middle of a sunny day of winter, which made the beautiful selection at Megan Mary Olander to stand out. Joy! I needed to peek inside and see more.
I came in to an employee who was having lunch (something Indian that smelled wonderful). She wasn't very pleased with the interruption, and she continued to be a bit on the neutral side, which knocks down a star. I asked her for a single red rose, which I was going to give to my Dude. I thought it would be a nice afternoon little gift, along with a bag of Cow Chip Chocolate Cookies.
The woman asked me if I wanted greens with the rose. "Well, of course, ma'am!" She delicately wrapped the rose around two shinny plantain-like leaves, with a couple of tiny, white flowers. After that, she covered the arrangement in brown paper and finished it up with a ribbon.
I was so happy. I was handed a very simple yet elegant and meaningful flower arrangement, a perfect zen gift for my man. I called and told him I had a surprise downstairs. He came and I gave it to him. It was such a delightful feeling. He loved it. His colleagues whistled when he went back to his office with the rose.
And I got to kiss my Prince at 3:30 PM.
