The rides are a good value, but the customer service sucks. Warning: you may actually lose money booking trips.
I tried twice changing a trip I booked in advance for another date. I followed the company's directions on its Web site to a T. It took 10 tries for me to finally get my trip in the "trade in" basket. During those tries, I kept getting a message saying, "This page is refreshing. Please check back in 24 hours." Once I was able to put the trip in trade, I tried to make a future reservation to credit the future trip with the trade-in trip. When I went to the VIEW/CHANGE RESERVATIONS page, I saw the trip I put into trade, but there was nothing to click under the column, "Select this trip." In other words, there was no box to check or button to select. I kept checking back after 24 hours (at least 27 hours before departure time of the then existing reservation) and even e-mailed the company that I feared I'd be going beyond the threshold of crediting my trip. According to one of the Megabus representatives, that's exactly what happened. She said it's up to someone at Megabus to review then decide whether to resolve the issue and the person would contact me in about 10 business days.
That person never contacted me. I sent another e-mail after those 10 business days explaining what happened. About a week later, I got an e-mail message saying, "response time is approximately 5 days. If you require immediate assistance or your trip is approaching the 24 hour restriction, please call 877-462-6342," and I did that originally. As you can tell, that did me no good at all. I ended up losing money and paying for another trip. This happened to me last year as well, and I ate $15, but those cheap trips start to add up when you eat the costs.
I talked to other people on my trip about this, and they told me they experience the same thing: not able to trade in trips, sucky customer service. Customer service is more of an answering service; I don't think Coach actually trains those people to help customers trouble shoot the Web site with booking issues. And you have to dig and dig through the site for the customer service number. It's like the company doesn't want you calling.
I encouraged the people I rode with to file a complaint with the BBB, which I did a couple of weeks after my June 14 incident. Almost a month later, I get an e-mail from Coach USA wanting to look into the issue.
I responded and sent a copy to the BBB about what happened this June and last year, when I ate the $15 trip. In my response, I made the suggestion that Megabus allow last minute changes for future credits because I've encountered numerous people who approach the Megabus stops wanting a last minute ticket on the bus. There's always been plenty of room on the buses; even when they were totally booked, someone always didn't show up, and that person was probably in the same situation as I, in which he couldn't take a trip, tried to trade in the trip, and ended up eating the cost. If Coach doesn't want drivers dealing with currency, have the last-minute passenger book the trip on his smart phone!
And Coach USA shouldn't fear losing money using my suggestions. It would retain happier customers and gain new ones. I also feel the company should actually train its customer service staff to actually do something - like, help people with booking trips online - other than taking phone messages. People want to book trips themselves, but escalation of confusing issues, like, the Web site issues I dealt with, could have been avoided had a customer service person helped me troubleshoot them.
BTW: Coach USA owns and runs Megabus.com. Just know: it's a great value, but the customer service sucks big time; and you do run the risk of actually losing money from trips you cannot exchange for future dates, which may actually make your trip cost more than you think. read more
