I had a terrible experience with the Megabus ride from SF to Sacramento. First of all, the bus was supposed to depart at 8:30. It didn't arrive until past nine, and we weren't on the rode until 9:20 or so. I got an email on my phone that said the bus was "delayed due to inclement weather." That day there wasn't a cloud in the sky, so that seemed like a strange excuse.
I shrugged off the late start time and was in line to get on the bus. I get to the front, drop off my backpack and turn to get on the bus. The EXTREMELY rude driver suddenly says, "you're not going on with that." Not in a nice, "excuse me" kind of way, just flat out rude. I didn't know what he meant at first, but then realized he wouldn't let me on with my guitar. To explain: my guitar is a pretty small travel guitar. It is not a regular full size guitar. It is made for traveling and backpacking. I have rode buses and even planes with it and have never had a problem. It is a bit long but very skinny. It is sort of in a gray area for size limits, but when I sit in the chair it mostly fits under the seat on front of me, and the top just extends over into my lap. Basically, the size does not effect anybody else. It may be a little bit more uncomfortable for me, but it isn't in anyone else's way or anything. Anyways, I try to tell the driver that it fits right in between my legs but he says, "I don't care. You are not going on there with this." I am shocked at his rudeness and I try to explain, "it is my guitar, I really don't want to put it under the bus where it can get damaged. I have ridden other buses and planes and have never had a problem." He just says again, "I DO NOT CARE. Put it down or you are not getting on MY bus." I try to reason with him. "What if I take the actual guitar out and just sit with that? That way it will be even more compact." He says, "there are no musical instruments allowed on the bus." I say, "I am not going to play it, I just really don't want it to get damaged in the bottom." He says, "IT'S OVER. Put it down or you are not getting on." Finally the employee who is actually putting the bags in the bottom looks at me with an understanding look and says, "I'll make sure it goes in a safe place." I figured my only choice was to trust this guy so that was what I did.
Then before the bus took off I saw the driver be rude to some other people who had slightly long luggage that they wanted to put in their laps too. Then the driver even YELLED at a guy who was trying to see if he could ride the bus even though he had a ticket for another time slot. This driver was unbelievable.
The whole ride I was nervous that my guitar was in the bottom, smashed or something.
But when we got to Sacramento, I get outside, and my guitar is the very first item out on the sidewalk. This was the only thing that made this ride good at all. So thank you VERY much to the employee who was putting the bags in and kept my guitar safe. You deserve a raise! No thanks at all to the very rude and unprofessional driver.
And for 11 bucks, that's not even THAT cheap for an hour and a half drive. I will never ride Megabus again. read more
