Megabus has really stopped caring! Where do they get their drivers...do they even screen them? They should have monitoring cameras on the buses not just for the passengers but for the bus drivers also!! The trip from NC to WDC on August 18th mid-night bus. Was ok until the driver unbeknownst to the customers stops in richmond to get gas but then takes a whole hour. He disappears and none of the passengers knew what was going on. We thought it was just a brief stop. That turned into a whole hour. Getting us in DC a whole hour later than scheduled. If this stop was announced in the beginning, perhaps it would have not be so bad and expected. Then the bus driver when nothing was happening would just start yelling for no reason that I saw. I understand it was a midnight trip and he probably did need to stretch and revive a bit. But the disappearing act and then yelling...was unprofessional and very disturbing. I just wanted to get to my destination! Now...I am on my way back home 9 a.m. in the morning. And there was an announcement made a whole hour of standing to board that the bus will be 30 late!! Its seems to be only with this route that the drivers can't get it right or show up on time! Normal people on jobs if they consistently show up late or have performance issues, they are fired! The last trip I took from NC in July, I returned home 3 hours later than schedule. Stranded on the bus. The bus driver this time was great did everything he could to keep all the customers calm including babies and children. Still...Megabus needs to look at this route and see how it can be handled better and hire more professional drivers that can handle the 8-hour drive. MegaBus was once one of the top contenders in the business. Now, they must have changed managment or got too big and don't care about quality service anymore. I don't accept you get what you pay for, because the reasonable prices (which have gone up over the years) was their motto. That's how they drew people and friends and family referred them. The bus line and the drivers were much better. Now...not so much. There are other services that are popping up to get MegaBus a run for its money. I took the bus from NYC to DC and the ride was supposed to take 4 hours and it ended up being 6 hours. The bus was hot and stuffy and we were given no explanation as to why the ride was taking so long. First of all the bus was late and we had to wait outside for 30 minutes in the freezing cold before we could even board. The driver then made 4 stops that all lasted at least 20 minutes. The stops were so close together and very unnecessary. We ended up getting to DC just in time to hit rush hour which wouldn't have happened if the bus was on time or if we didn't make those stops. I am going to look for other companies before I go back to this one. read more

Avoid avoid avoid. Only reason to take megabus is if you book the $1 tickets months in advance. Out of the buses I've taken between DC and NYC, megabus is BY FAR the worst. Never leaves on time, I'm actually currently in line for the 2pm bus. It's 2:06 and we haven't started boarding. Our bus isn't even here. Last time I took megabus we left 45 minutes late. That is fucking unacceptable YOU GUYS HAVE 1 JOB. Get me to my fucking destination, and not TWO hours later than you said you would. Also megabus is the only one that will stop in bumble fuck Maryland, wasting another 30-45 minutes. (Vamoose sometimes stops in bethesda, but it's quick and not that out of the way) Their intro safety video is annoying AF and plus they play it AGAIN after the Baltimore (which is actually bumble fuck white plains or some shit) stop. On the way back from NYC because there are so many destinations it's confusing AF and their workers are absolutely 0 help in organizing everyone so I encourage you to be proactive in making sure you don't miss the bus. Also don't show up at the last minute because they will sell your seats bc they are vultures. I almost got my seat sold bc I'd been waiting in the wrong bus line bc I'd asked an attendant where I should go for the 4:00 bus she told me to go back to the line, when in fact my bus was already being boarded down the road, far away from the sign for the DC bus line, and everyone in the line was actually waiting for the 4:30. Again, YOU HAVE ONE JOB. Also they have the most inefficient "ticket" system I've ever seen. The have one guy looking at your random wifi default-esque reservation # and then try to match it with a list on his clipboard. And they still use the slow ass hand held credit card machines. GET WITH THE TIMES... You put the effort in to film a fuckinn safety video for a BUS. RIDE. News flash, we've all been practicing sitting in a moving vehicle our whole fucking lives. But you apparently have never heard of QR codes and Square. Even fucking street food carts use square sometimes now, I MEAN. You are not paying for stellar customer service and if your trip is delayed or even cancelled completely, that's unfortunate but there isn't much you can do about it. The bus is probably going to be way too hot or cold, wear layers. You are going to be able to smell the bathroom the whole time, and no, bathrooms on buses don't smell good. There will probably also be a few people that don't smell good. The bus may be very crowded. If you bring a bag prepare to have it in your lap or under your feet the whole time. There will be decent trips and bad trips, and that is the risk you have accepted by using Megabus. read more

The trick to taking Megabus is this: set your expectations really, really low. Then lower them some more. I booked my ticket from DC to Pittsburgh before reading the Yelp reviews, so by the time I boarded the bus, I expected the absolute worst. What I got was much better than I expected...but that's because I expected my ride to match that of everyone's nightmare reviews: basically a long, stinky, hot, zero-star ride through hell. My personal experience was not a ride through hell, but it was definitely not a party by any means. On the way to Pittsburgh, I got very lucky: my late-night trip was clean, quiet and uncrowded (I had an empty seat next to me). The bus even arrived a few minutes early. If you need to take Megabus anywhere, I suggest taking the bus at an ungodly hour when no one else wants to travel. The way back to DC was a different story. The bus was packed to the gills, and a passenger who uses a walker had trouble figuring out where to stow his walker and where to find an accessible seat without falling over. The bus driver refused to help, so the passengers around him had to help find a wheelchair-accessible seat and carry his walker to the right place. Then there's Megabus's false advertising. It loves to advertise its free WiFi and outlets for your devices, but this is true in only the most technical sense. I had a working outlet on my Pittsburgh-bound bus, but on the way back to DC, the bus driver knew the outlets didn't work, but only mentioned it after people complained. He actually shrugged and said they were broken because the bus was old and things sometimes just break. (It kind of makes you wonder what else will break.) As for the WiFi: don't plan to do any kind of work on the bus. Don't plan to use the WiFi. The WiFi is a lie. It does not work. This really should be a one star review, but I'm giving Megabus two stars only because it is cheap and because the ride to Pittsburgh was surprisingly undramatic and smooth. Sure, you get what you pay for. A dirt-cheap bus is not going to be fun or organized or luxurious in any way. Megabus is awesome....my first megabus experience...the ride is extremely enjoyable... I guess because I was on the bus when there wasn't as many people as there suppose to be...so I guess luck!! Anyways back to my bus experience... There were comfy seats everywhere...looked like the double decker bus... I sat in the bottom...there was two seatings where there was two mini tables where you can use during the ride... The seats are big and Comfy...with a lot of space in between... The buse driver is kind and attentive...we only made one stop for pick up...the bus was on time for drop off...so not late like the other buses...which is nice! The prices are reasonable... You can pretty much get deals online..but yes there is a charging fee which is about two dollars...which Is well worth it... Six hour ride back to New York took only four hours...great! Mega bus is located in dc union station ...up on the second floor outside of union square...the buses are numbered and need have tickets already out for check in... There is no chairs to wait...but be sure to be on time...when you miss the bus no refunds at all...even though I left dc in the worst mood... A least my ride was comfortable ! read more

Wow! This trip was the WORST!! I took the Mega bus because they advertised WiFi and I was traveling with a 6 year old girl and an Ipad. I had hoped that she would be able to connect and watch her program. BUT there was NO WIFI on either of my trips (I bought the round trip in advance.) there was no onboard movie and there is no overhead bag storage....plus they advertise $1 fares. I have yet to see a dollar fare anywhere... then they stopped somewhere and didn't let anyone know ahead of time that were going to stop. It wasn't very good. Never again! read more

Terrible!! Dirty!! Rude!! We took the round trip DC to NYC. Both locations had long lines as they don't board you until minutes before departure time and yet no area for seating. So if you are elderly or handicapped don't bother. Expect to stand on your feet or sit on concrete for 30+min. The hop on to a disgusting bus. The windows have greasy stains from people leaning their heads up against it. So much so that I literally couldn't see out the window! The bathroom was even worse. The smell was rancid and made you gag every time someone opened the door. There was trash on the floor probably because the bathroom trash can was falling off the wall and overflowing. The toilet paper was sitting in the side of the toilet. And the two hand sanitizer a were both empty. The seats are tight and when the person ahead of you leans their chair back (as everyone does) expect to only have a few inches of space. The staff were extremely rude at both locations. While waiting for our bus to arrive, I happened to check in on their websites trip tracker just to discover we were delayed 2.5hours!! Not a soul told is that. At the time we were originally supposed to depart a guy came and told us we were delayed and he didn't know how long it would take. Magically 10min later they allowed us to board a bus that had been sitting there the entire time. They were in such a hurry that they didn't properly check everyone's tickets and allowed two people to board who went even going to the same destination. It want until the driver starting shutting the doors that he over headed our destination and the two jumped up and yelled stop. Won't be returning to this company. read more

I've never had a majorly negative experience with Megabus but I've never really had very high expectations for it. I've taken it to New York on a few occasions and also to Blacksburg. There was one instance going home from Blacksburg to Union Station that the driver had to fuel up which was unexpected but the show go moving again. Another time coming back from NYC we got stuck in a snow storm and I thought the driver did decent job getting us home safely. With Megabus you just need to expect to get from point A to point B. I have noticed: 1. You need to book early. They jack up prices, especially around the holidays. I booked tickets to NYC during Thanksgiving for NYE and paid a decent price but a few weeks later, prices had quadrupled. 2. I've noticed that they number the "prime" seats in front and other desirable areas to get more money out of patrons which is a shame. I don't know how enforced or popular these increased tickets are but I doubt people will buy them. Just be aware. read more

My worst experience since Indioesia in 1979. 93 degrees F in NY. Bus scheduled at 6.30 pm. Had to stay in line in the sun, no seats, until 7.10 pm NO AC!!!! Ride from DC to NYC and back for a Broadway show. Departed from Union Station without issue. Driver drove very slowly though, especially when there was no traffic. 15 mins before we were set to arrive, driver stops at a rest stop so he could pee. Hmmm, okay I guess. Arrived in NYC 45 mins later than we were supposed to. Drop off location was random but taxis and Uber drivers were on hand and available. Return trip was also a random street, but at least had two hot dog stands, available for grabbing a quick beverage or snack for the ride, which I appreciated. There was a long line for the bathroom as we took off. Bus driver refused to allow me to walk up the front steps to return to my seat, despite literally sitting in the front upper deck reserved area and despite the fact that I had to pass people sitting and standing on the rear steps waiting for the restroom. All in all, not a bad way to travel. Inexpensive for sure. I paid extra for the reserved extra knee space as I am 6'2. Better than the regular seats, but not by very much at all. On my trip from Washington DC to New York, bus driver became lost, dispatch was unable to help (could not use gps due to height restrictions) and we had to wait in a parking lot for escort. When escort came and finally got us on NJ turnpike, the bus driver missed the bus lane and entrance and we sat in traffic for two hours while watching other buses drive past us. A trip scheduled for five hours exceeded eight and he passengers and bus driver got into heated arguments about his competence. I called customer service nearing the end of the trip and was told that I could not obtain a refund because the trip was still in progress. After he weekend passed, I called again and was told I had to send an email to Megabus customer service and I could not communicate with a person that could simply refund the money. Megabus used to represent quality and affordability. Success has impaled their ability to deliver either. I have started using Bolt bus, a smaller but much more reliable company that is also housed at Union Station. I hope I never have to use Megabus again and will pay double to avoid this company. This is by far the worst bus service I have ever taken. I ride the bus just about every other weekend, and I will do everything in my power to never ride Megabus again. After departing 15 minutes late for no reason whatsoever, the bus driver took the slowest route possible up from DC to Baltimore. A quick look at google maps could have shown that. His choice added another 30 minutes to our trip. We then stopped for another 30 minutes to pick people up in Maryland. That process could have taken 10 minutes, easily. And, after filling up the bus, two people with reservations were left on the curb in Maryland because Megabus overbooked. After choosing the wrong route, leaving people with reservations behind, and stopping unnecessarily long to pick people up, the driver again stopped in New Jersey on the way to New York, wasting another half hour. This trip could have easily been 4.5 hours long. Instead it took six. On the plus side, at least I actually got to New York and wasn't left behind. This is a terrible company.If you want to go from DC to New York, I recommend taking Washington Deluxe or Bolt Bus. They are way better. read more

Took a round trip from DC to New York. It was a mess. Both buses were late. The bus for the earlier departure was almost two hours late. That group was told they would get a refund, but our bus was only one hour late so no refund. The return trip was 45 minutes late. The return bus driver got lost and added another hour onto the trip and got us to DC so late that the subway closed, forcing everyone to take a cab. The funny part was when we stopped in Baltimore and some arguments broke out between drivers and some of the passengers jumped ship and boarded the bus behind us. This company is awful. The return trip was not much better- it was more exciting though! And I have to say, again, that the drivers are amazing. (except for the one who abandonded ship as soon as we arrived in Boston- see below) The company seriously needs new mechanics or new buses or both. Pluses: Yes,it left on time. And the wi-fi worked. And we got a table for the three of us with plugs and everything. And there was NO construction traffic! Minus' And then we broke down in the middle of the highway. Not over on the side. In the middle. Like the bus died and luckily the driver was in the HOV lane so we coasted to a stop in the buffer lane between that and the other 3 lanes whizzing by. It was 3 am and traffic was lite. The diver and co-pilot were ON IT. Called in, got the repair log out started working on a solution. A young, agro cop showed up semi-immediately & started barking about how we couldn't stay there (DUH) and then mysteriously, another bus pulled up. The drivers and co-pilots humped all out luggage from one bus to the next (cursing all those little women with huge, overstuffed luggage) and then escorted us onto the bus. It was orderly. There were people standing in the aisles and on the stairs and basically even tho everyone was freaking out, behavior was not as brutal as one would think. Until we finally pulled into the station in Boston. the bus stopped. the Driver got out, opened the luggage hatch and WALKED AWAY. Leaving the feral passengers to find their bags. That whole starving lemming rush started again (see prior review) Indulge me: WTF IS WRONG WITH PEOPLE????? You think you are the only one who wants their luggage and to go sleep in a bed??? Great, how about if you block the door and then stand there not doing anything, waiting passively for someone else to hand you your bag- which they can't because you are standing there. The stars I'm giving just represent what it's like to sit for 4-6 hours on a bus - bumpy, cramped, and loud. A lot of breaking, and a lot of feeling like the bus has crashed into the car traveling in front. There will be crying children, people talking on the phone, and folks that are visibly ill unless you want to take an equally insufferable bus after midnight. If it is 95 degrees outside, or the extreme opposite, do not show up to the stop an hour early. They will only board you very close to departure time. As far as the experience goes specific to Megabus, I will say I was initially nervous to choose them based on the reviews I read here. Fortunately, both drivers I had to my destinations were pleasant. The bus back from New York to DC hit some god awful traffic because part of I-95 was shut down - it added two extra hours to our trip. For about 3 hours total we were trying to get through the Baltimore area. I was following Google Maps the whole way and at first thought the driver was making bad judgments regarding alternate routes. It turns out that he did get us there in the fastest way possible and persisted with us way past the scheduled arrival time. At the end of the trip, he said, "We encountered some aversions, but we overcame them and finally made it to Washington, DC." We all were able to laugh off the stress. read more

I would give 0 stars because I am yet again waiting for a bus to arrive well after I was supposed to have left. Yes, you read that correctly- my bus is not even here yet even though it was scheduled to leave 20 minutes ago. A bus is here but that--I am told--is a 4pm bus but I am on the 3pm bus. Why can't the 4pm bus become the 3pm bus and the 3pm bus become the 4pm bus? Why must a bus sit unused when there are people who were already supposed to leave? I have no idea. Perhaps most irritating is that Megabus tells its patrons nothing. There's an app for that! And it says "info unavailable." Bus unavailable, info unavailable, f@#%s unavailable. I've actually never (*crosses fingers*) had a bad experience with Megabus DC. The queuing area to get on the bus for different cities is efficient, spacious, and actually makes sense. The buses have always been on time for me. The bus rides themselves are generic Megabus quality--shoddy Wifi, outlets, pretty uncomfortable seating, but still overall an affordable ride without any major issues. Compared to the other Megabus stops I've been to (NYC, Philadelphia, Baltimore,) DC is actually pretty fantastic. read more

I showed up well before time for my bus, no Megabus workers around to ask about my specific bus but I followed the signs to the megabus waiting area. It's not rocket science right? I should be able to figure this out. No buses in the megabus area so I figured when you see these huge buses, I'll go ask the driver. Well, my time comes and no bus. I read some reviews that say Megabus is always late so I figured that was the case. No more than 5 min after my departure time, I see a Megabus pull out from in between two other carriers, many lanes away and OF COURSE that was my bus. Could have been avoided if there was SOME information on which buses are where or at least a Megabus kiosk worker or SOMETHING. So now I'm out $25. There are many buses you can take to travel within the United States at a way cheaper price than trains, most of them are good so long as they are clean and staff is respectful. Most of them are worth saving the money instead of the train. But this is ridiculous, megabus is definitely not worth it. Take anything else. This time megabus MEGA disappointed me, apparently they have PRESET temperatures that they don't bother adjusting regardless of the day's temperature. It is 72F outside and there is HOT air coming out of the AC vents, over 5 people in the bus have called customer service so far, to no avail. We have yet to receive a "call back" telling us what they are doing to solve this problem. The driver warned us early on that there was nothing she could do regarding the temperature, what she failed to mention was that the temperature was set at above 75 degrees inside a bus with 62 people onboard. Still waiting to hear back from megabus, it's going to be a long 4 hours to our destination, and boy I regret choosing megabus for the silly table I can work on. DO NOT USE MEGA BUS! for starters it is advertised on the site and on the buses that there is "WiFi" but when getting on the bus to my surprise there was no "WIFI" And when I asked the driver about it all he said was "we try our best to provide WiFi on the buses" so I figured ok so there will probably be WiFi on the bus on the way back BUT NO there was none and when I asked the driver on that bus about it he gave the SAME LOUSY ANSWER as the driver on the first bus! I took the megabus from DC to Durham which includes a stop in Richmond, VA. Once we got on the road the ride was smooth. Pros: cheap price, convenient locations, pretty decent departure and arrival times, decent space between individuals on the bus (compared to other buses). Felt safe. Clearly marked location for my boarding. Cons: If your bus is running late there's no way to know most times until it's literally late. They will not do anything about it unless the bus is 45 minutes late, at which point all they do is track it. It cannot be tracked before that time. Because it's a bus you can hear other people's music in their headphones which can be annoying on long trips. The megabus workers at Union Station are not knowledgable of time schedules so if you have any questions just call customer service. The wifi doesn't allowstreaming (which is normal for bandwidth purposes) Overall it's decent for a cheap ride for a short period of time. I would spend more money to do a flight if the trips over 5 hrs. read more

Its okay a step above Greyhound if you don't mind going to Union Station. Tons of people of this bus - it is a double decker which makes for a hectic turn in the bathroom. I liked riding on top and if you are in the front seat what a treat! Feels like you are driving the bus. The pickup was a bit far out and after spending the day in NY the last thing I want to do is walk further. Plus it was confusing because there are several buses lined up but we managed. I may consider it again but as a double decker there are tons more people. I may just prefer vamoose unless they have a ridiculous deal on tickets. read more

The only things I liked about Megabus are the fact that it leaves from Union Station (I work just a block away) and that it's a double-decker (engine and road noise are significantly lower). Everything else is mediocre at best. Leg room is tight, even for a short guy like me. Every other bust does not have a functional electrical sockets and/or fans. On top of that the buses in NYC embark and disembark in the different parts of the city. I use Vamoose constantly, but it doesn't pick up from the District (only VA or MD) and it conducts all of its operations in a single spot in each of the cities. So, my advice is if you are like me and go to NYC straight after work in DC take Megabus there, but take Vamoose back and disembark in whichever state you live. There's no discount when buying a round trip ticket, so mix and match to your advantage. read more

What a horrible bus company! I called prior to purchasing a ticket informing the agent that I was purchasing a ticket for my 83 year old uncle who uses a wheelchair. I asked if he would have any issues getting on the bus and what information would he need since I live in a different state and I was purchasing the ticket for him. I was told that all he needed was the reservation number and he would be fine. This trip was travel from Washington DC to Penn Station in NY on Thursday, December 23,2021. I had a family member take my uncle to the bus station just in case he needed assistance. They got there around 5:40am and there were no buses for Megabus nor were there any agents directing customers to where the Megabus would be leaving from. My 83 year old uncle waited in the freezing cold for 40 minutes only to find out that the bus left. I'm not sure if the bus left earlier than it was supposed to because it wasn't supposed to depart until 6:20am but while my uncle was waiting and there was no bus. I had to have my family member put my uncle on the train and because of that experience I didn't want to chance another issue with this company so he didn't take his return trip back. I emailed the company and informed them of what transpired and the response was an apology for me missing the bus but told me I could purchase another ticket and further informed me that I would not be receiving a refund. Days later they had the nerve to send me emails to review their company. They have to be out of their minds. I will review on all platforms but unfortunately it will not be a positive review. I took the megabus from DC to NY over Thanksgiving and it was horrible. My seat was broken on the DC to NY and altogether very uncomfortable. I had purchased an assigned seat upstairs for both directions. Worse yet the mega bus pulled over and stopped at a rest stop for more than an hour each way!!!! to change drivers. The ride took 7.5 hours each way. I have taken a different bus every Thanksgiving for years and it took 5 hours. However, the worst was that the driver tried to lock us all into the bus while we waited for the other driver. Both directions he had to let people off of the bus because the situation inside of the bus had become so volatile. People were yelling, angry and demanding to be let off. Some people were crying. It was a frightening situation that could have ended very badly for all concerned. This is the first and last time that I will ever ride megabus. read more

The bus is late EVERY single time. I have missed countless dinner reservations and one flight because of how non punctual their service is.

This is my third time riding the megabus from DC to NYC and despite the negative comments I can honestly say that so far I've had a pleasant experience. The buses I've been on have all departed on time. I'm docking a star because of the no refund ticket policy, boo! read more
