I took it from nyc to DC on an overnight bus. I. Think that's the best way to avoid traffic. I thought it was a good experience. Drops right off in the train station. I brought a pillow and sat by the window so I could sleep. I didn't see a power outlet near my seat on the upper deck. But I brought an extra battery which I would recommend. This was a smooth trip! I guess this review will be more about the actual bus stop than Megabus in general. Like most will say, when dealing with Megabus, definitely remember that you get what you pay for. If you set low expectations, then (hopefully) you will not be too disappointed. While I have not frequently used Megabus, I really appreciate that DC's Megabus stop is actually inside of Union Station. Well, it's on the uppermost level of the station, but you get what I'm saying. From my understanding, many Megabus stops typically are located in random parking lots and on sidewalks next to busy streets, so there is a little comfort knowing that you do not have to deal with this in DC. Maybe, you'll have to deal with this for your return trip. Also, since this stop is in a station, passengers will not be greatly exposed to the elements, like rain or snow. I thought Union Station had adequate signage for getting to the general bus departure area and knowing in which line to wait for the bus. If there is any confusion, this station has an attendant to ensure you wait in the correct line. Since the station has a monitored line and designated parking spaces for specific buses, the line moves in an ordered manner once the bus arrives. This is a much better option than having a massive crowd where the majority of folks are trying to get on the bus at the same time. While I do not anticipate taking Megabus on a regular basis, I think it's a great option (at least in DC) to take a last-minute trip. Something like doing DC-Philly by bus, and Philly-DC by train might be a great option if you want to save a few bucks and can book your tickets in advance. read more

I have often taken the 6:20 pm bus from DC to NYC. They basically have the cheapest prices in town and buses at many different times during the day. However, the bus has never been on time. I take megabus because Vamoose or Tripper does not have any buses after 5 pm and I don't want to pay ridiculous money for last min Amtrak, and most importantly, I really don't want to stay in Arlington any longer than i have to. So, I tolerate megabus 30+ ~ 1+ hour delay Avoid Megabus if you can do vamoose or tripper. read more

Been taking Megabus on/off for 10 years . I've never had too bad of an experience. I've only had very few delayed buses, and 1 random bus stop and change drivers out of the blue. My only con is that the bus stops can be confusing. Sometimes it has two stops on the sign but doesn't say which line is for which. Then the buses just randomly pull up with no announcement of where their going, and even if you've been standing out there awhile people just randomly walk up and cut. Please have some type of order at these bus stops and announce what bus has arrived. read more

If you need to travel between DC and New York you should consider BESTBUS. Megabus should only be used as a last resort for travel options. Their policies are not transparent. Their customer service is not adequate. Changing drivers in the middle of a trip without notifying passengers beforehand. Leaving passengers waiting 30 minutes for a change in drivers. read more

The Megabus (DC) experience isn't so bad, but it's not great either. Keep the expectations to a minimum. A lot of the issues people have with Megabus are certainly warranted, but when the travel options are limited it's important to take note of the trends to make the ride less chaotic. Megabus first got its start during the chaos of the Chinatown buses shuttling to and from east coast cities. At first it was marketing itself to be a cheaper cost ($1 rides anyone?) and then it boasted its amenities right away (WiFi, cushy seats, air conditioning, etc.) all while emphasizing at how "safe" it was compared to the low cost, worn out competitor bus companies. Above all, it was virtual and everything could be booked online. DC has been one of their least attractive lines. The utter disorganization from the local teams, the shoddy customer service issues, the fleet of buses are starting to show some wear (WiFi is out, seats have holes, bathrooms reek, etc.) and the tickets aren't always as cheap as one might expect (round trip could be anywhere from $50-80 depending on time of year). Keep the following in mind: * Be punctual, but don't expect the bus to leave on time. * Don't be in a hurry because the lines can be confusing at times. * Due to traffic, a slow driver, route changes, and general punctuality issues, the duration of the trip may be longer than expected. * Keep a copy of the receipt / ticket on hand at all times. (Or a fully charged cell phone) * Be flexible. Sometimes buses will not arrive and a new assigned bus will eventually come. * Try to sleep if possible. * Attempt to travel at less popular times. There may be room on the bus. It may even be on time. The tickets will also be less expensive. read more

Megabus from DC is always delayed, even when DC is first stop. Because of the delay the bus drivers is driving like crazy to catch up on the time. This has now happened several times. Now it is clear for me that you're more like to risk your life than get to your destination. read more

If I could give Megabus no stars I would have. megabus basically took my $150 and told me it's nothing that they could do in compensating me for my trip that I called 3 weeks in advance to cancel. Megabus is a horrible company. I've been using the service for about a decade, mostly because I never bothered to look into other companies. I use it probably once every 2-3 months ish. It's never ever ever on time. In fact, it's usually 1+ hour late. Nothing works on the bus (chargers etc) It isn't clean or comfortable. You stop constantly for no reason. I've been in so many buses that just pull over on the shoulder of the highway which seems dangerous? We often stop for 20+ minutes at random gas stations which only makes us later. Worst of all: I just traded in my ticket for another and figured I'd use the leftover money for another ticket later. They don't tell you ANYWHERE on their site that you don't get the extra money back - i checked beforehand to make sure on their q&a section - nothing there. No warnings. I emailed them when I didn't get a notification after and was told that the policy is in their terms and conditions. Obviously, the company doesn't expect you to read their terms and conditions. They expect you to read their q&a section on their site. So I lost my $70ish dollars and they lost me as a customer. read more

Never again. Yes they are cheap, but the advertising is deceptive. The DC to NY leg wasn't too bad. We had a delay, made worse by a 'check engine light' that required us to switch buses. Not happy about that, but at least they were honest about the problem. Fortunately the bus switch out point was nearby, the 'spare' was ready and waiting, the drivers were apologetic, and they were quick to move bags from one bus to the next. The ride after that was smooth and we got in with only a 20 minute delay. Wifi and power outlets were good. 3 stars overall. The return NYC to DC leg was horrible. Apparently drivers are only allowed so many hours of driving time, which they cannot exceed. But for whatever reason that isn't an impediment to allowing them to drive a route they can't complete. You read that right; they put a driver with 3 hours of driving time in a bus with a 4 hour route. On purpose. It Gets Worse. So when the driver's 3 hours are up, he parks in some random Maryland parking lot and announces to the surprised riders we had to wait for his replacement to arrive (no pre positioning of the replacement this time). Either wait for that, or hope the next scheduled bus from NYC that stops here has extra space and we can crash there. The choices were wait 30 minutes and hope the next bus has room, or wait 45 minutes for the guaranteed ride allocated to replace our driver. It Gets Worse Part II. According to a fellow passenger who takes this route frequently, this has been the norm in her trips. I checked Yelp and sure enough, there are frequent complaints about this. The company built in what's for all intents a scheduled delay without advertising it. That's false advertising. It Gets Worse Part III. So we're hanging out for the next bus hoping it will have space...and it arrives! A scramble of stranded passengers occurs. But the poor driver isn't prepared for this, and he's reluctant to let these new people on his bus. See, he has no idea how many people just offloaded, so he doesn't know how many spare seats he can give away. And apparently there was no coordination between him and my bus, so this was all a surprise for him. As it turns out, there was space for all (and much rejoicing). Got to DC with a 70 minute delay on what was supposed to be a 4 hour trip. Nope; never again with Megabus. read more

My trip from NY was beyond terrible. First: The bus was late over 2 hours. It wouldn't have been such a big deal if it wasn't pouring outside. Within the 2 hours waiting for the bus, several later buses left as scheduled. Second: During the intermission where the drivers switch, the new driver got lost and could not locate our bus. Another 45 minutes to an hour waiting at the rest area while the current bus driver threatened the "lost" driver that he will leave the passengers since she was technically "clocked out" or "out of miles". Third: When the new driver finally arrives, he states that he's new and does not know the route very well...There goes my "rest" for the remainder of the trip. Fourth: Another bus contacts our bus stating that their bus has broke down and required us to detour and pick up their passengers, SERIOUSLY?! When our bus was 2 hours late, we weren't allowed to ride another bus that was leaving but we are required to pick up other passengers? Fifth: Our bus was SO packed I questioned the legal limitation of passengers not to mention our safety. I was SO frustrated and kept it to myself solely due to being so tired. The next day, I contacted the customer support and both Tier1 and Tier2 were absolutely no help. Not only do they stated that "they don't care what happened", they hung up on me on several occasions. I absolutely refuse to be a customer to MegaBus again and rather pay a more to NOT ride. Save yourself the grievance and look elsewhere. That much stress isn't worth saving a few dollars. read more

If I could give these guys a minus one star, I would. Booked this bus round trip from Blacksburg, Va to Arlington, Va. It was over 1.5 hours late both ways. They overbooked the Blacksburg location. And when I called about where the bus was for the Arlington, Va return route I was told they were caught in traffic and roadblocks. I live in the area and I got here on time and traffic is a constant. That's why we have traffic apps. IMO, they planned poorly. The guy on the phone didn't apologize or offer a refund. My suggestion is to avoid these people, it'd be faster to walk. read more

For the price, I guess you get what you pay for. My family and I did a day trip to NYC to see a show and had originally planned on the train, but opted for Megabus because it was significantly cheaper for the 3 of us. Our first bus was good. We left on time, had one stop in Baltimore (ish) and made it to NYC a bit early. Only complaint about that ride was that the bus was FREEZING and controlling our little vents did nothing. It felt nice at first but after 4 hours, it was COLD. Our second bus was NOT so great. Again, the bus was FREEZING. however, that was not the worst part. Every 15-20 minutes or so, we would get this insanely disgusting odor filling the bus - it can only be described as a porta potty on a hot day but you're trapped inside. It was AWFUL and it seemed to be coming through the vents. At one point I almost felt like I was going to get sick. Someone made our driver aware and he told her that someone must have done it on purpose and he couldn't do anything about it. He stopped twice to check the bathroom but that didn't seem to be the issue. The climate just want great. We paid for reserved seats at a table so we could all sit together, and that was fine. The seats reclined a decent amount but the leg room was just average. Outlets worked and WiFi was spotty. The trip to NYC is doable, but I don't think I'll be using Megabus next time. If it's just me going, I'll be taking the Amtrak. $50 round trip for a weekend isn't bad, and I've never had bad service there. If it's my whole family, we will look into a different bus company. read more

Never take Megabus. Saturday we got on at Union Station headed to downtown Philly. Instead the bus driver took a wrong turn and we ended up at the airport. The bus was so tall he couldn't fit under the pedestrian bridge so we all had to get off the bus. Then we all had to get in Uber's to our various locations. When you call for customer service and ask them what compensation they will make - they won't. Wouldn't you think they would refund your ticket or pay for the additional costs incurred by taking you to the wrong location but the won't. So if you would like to take a bus to a location you don't choose and that you can't determine, pull over by the side of the road, be off boarded and have to take an Uber to your final location mega bus is the choice for you. read more

I wish that zero stars was an option. It took us 8 hours to go from dc to New York with NO TRAFFIC, a trip that normally takes 4. I google-mapped it before we left and they estimated 4 hours 15 min. We stopped for a half an hour to pick up extra passengers and then proceeded to drive 10mph under the speed limit. I have done this drive myself and it has never taken this long, even in standstill traffic on thanksgiving. We hit philly at the time we should have been in New York. We also stopped to change drivers 30 mi outside New York and the new driver wasn't even there! Even though we were 2 hours late. I understand and appreciate the unpredictability of traffic, but if this is your general practice than do not promise a 4 hour ride. People make plans accordingly. People on this bus missed shows, planes, dinners, etc. I left work early for a 130 bus so I would have my evening in New York read more

I can't tell you how annoyed I am at the service from DC back to NYC...the slowest ever. The people running the service were slow, inefficient, didn't care about being timely...arghh!! So annoying and frustrating. The bus left the station half an hour late, pulled over to pick up passengers later while the driver dawdled about getting back on the road, and that long, boring, prerecorded bus video was played twice...yuck. One of the reasons I chose MegaBus was because of the amenities advertised on the bus. I have three seats and I need just one of the outlets to work while riding on this bus but none of them work.  On Mar 10, 2022, I approached the verbally aggressive bus driver about the outlets, first she initially said she had no suggestions to remedy my issue.  However, minutes later over the speaker she suggested we move to other seats that were occupied by other passengers at the next stop. This is unacceptable and costing me money because I must work.  I was depending on the outlets that were offered on the bus and if I can't plug in my computer I can't work. On Mar 13, 2022, my daughters and I were returning home from New York City.  I had my bag in the seat next to me because when I made my seat purchase this seat was blocked off due to COVID restrictions.  According to Megabus policy the seats that were an additional $10 weren't supposed to have someone next to them.  I paid the additional $10 (see attachment) however, the bus driver demanded I move my bag.  When I attempted to ask him a question or try to explain, he immediately cut me off in mid sentence and aggressively explained to me that if I didn't pay for the seat I needed to move my bag. Again, I attempted to talk to him and requested that he look at my reservation and he refused.  Finally, when I was given the chance to talk I let him know there was a nasty wet green substance on the floor which prevented me from putting my bag down.  As he walked away, he continued to ask me to remove my bag with no place to put it.  All the seats around me were taken.  He did return with cleaning products and commenced to getting up the mess but not without further verbally assaulting me placing his finger in my face and placing a stranger next to me. By this time, I was shaken, nervous, and unsure of the policy on the additional fee to have the seat next to me free.  Once on the road, I checked the megabus policy and I was correct. And the stranger next to me should not have been placed next to me. This could have been avoided if the bus driver or an additional worker was ensuring each passenger sat in their assigned seat.  Many passengers that were sitting on the second deck had to move to the first floor because they didn't purchase a reserve seat. There is no organization on the bus but when passengers that purchased the reserve seats get assistance because someone is in their seat.  The bus drivers become rude, disrespectful and very unprofessional to everyone on the bus. This review is for the bus from Union Station in Washington D.C to New York City on August 11th, 2017 at 12:30AM. The bus was on time and everyone was seated promptly. This was the only positive thing about Megabus. This is my first time riding with this company and definitely my last. I paid more for the reserved seating to have more leg room... there was no room at all. It was completely jammed with everyones' legs (you're facing another pair of seats) and a useless table in the middle. The regular unreserved seats look more comfortable, and they're cheaper. The whole ride was uncomfortable... the driver was listening to his own music and the bus kept making noises. It is now 6:30am and we should have been to NYC by now. Instead, we are in New Jersey at a rest area because the driver has exceeded his driving time and we're waiting for a new driver to arrive. The driver said it would be a 10 minute wait, which has turned into a 45+ minute wait. I paid the same amount for this bus fare as I have paid Vamoose in the past (~$40) for much less comfort and professionalism. I understand if you receive a cheap ticket, then absolutely you will receive what you paid for. Please... don't do it to yourself. read more

1. My bus from union station is ALWAYS at least 45 min late 2. Note to self: the second deck front seats have NO room for legs. You can't stretch forward. The $1 reserved seats are better 3. The Wi-Fi is useless for anything that's worth using it for 4. The seats are cheap well in advance 5. From union station to my destination OR back, with or without delay, always takes me 6-7 hours instead of the 5-6 hours 6. Is it worth it? The bus that was scheduled to leave at 9.25 am from Durham, NC to Washington, DC was more than 2 hours late. We were initially told it would be 45 min late, then 4 hours, then 3 hours. Due to the unreliability of the customer service information, I was unable to even find other travel plans. I missed a very important meeting due to this delay. The bus driver, once the bus arrived, promised a refund. However, when I contacted Megabus I was denied. I will never be using this service again, and discourage everyone else from as well. read more

I used this service at the last minute while traveling to New York for the Rock the Bells concert. The bus was clean and the staff was nice but there was no wifi. The seats are not comfortable and the outlets are in an awkward area. On my way there the bus did not have any A/C. I will travel by airplane or amtrak next time. read more

Every time I take Megabus I tell myself "this is the last time." Every time I ride Megabus, it's a total disaster. I chose to ride once again because it was the only bus leaving DC early enough to get me to NYC before 9:00AM. Well, we've been sitting at a service station on the interstate for over an hour because "the bus driver is done driving." He doesn't seem to care in the least we're horribly late and every passenger on this bus is late. This is a horrible way to run a business. I wish Megabus would just go out of business. read more

This location is unreasonably disorganized. It's not clear which line is for ticketed passengers and which for standby. I waited for ten minutes in the standby line and was told that "the bus is full" even though I could clearly see that the reserved seat I paid for was empty. The conductor's solution was to tell me to drive to White Marsh to catch the bus in Baltimore. Unforgivably illogical reasoning, in the face of a demonstrable lie. We had a trip leaving DC to NYC at 12 midnight. Our first bus was broke down so we didn't even leave DC at 12. And then we got another bus that stinks so bad. We cannot use the bathroom for the whole 5 hour trip. This is insane. Customer service is poor. Both buses had trash under the seats. Nobody cleans the buses. I highly doubt I'll ever purchase tickets for this bus again or recommend this bus service. read more

My bus from NY to Washington DC broke down on the highway 1.5 hours away from my destination at the time we were scheduled to arrive. The driver was being very rude and inconsiderate to the customers, We waited 10 minutes... still unaware of what was going on. Finally, about 20 minutes later he tells us a replacement bus will despatch from DC but he is unaware of the time it will arrive. Majority of the bus called uber's and lyft's to pick them up on the side of the highway including myself. Smooth rides, professional drivers who actually care about the quality of your ride and have good personalities, etc. DC to NYC isn't worth the cost of Amtrak or a flight if you know what time of day to leave. read more

It's not our first time to use Megabus, however this time i feel extremely dissatisfaction and disappointment about the terrible driver and over 2 hours delay. The original schedule was from 6am - 10:15am, BUT around 7am the driver said heater is not working and we have to wait for another bus, also according to our previous experience this driver keep driving on the wrong route and not in the fastest route at all. I bought a megabus ticket from DC to Philly because it was the cheapest one at the time I bought the ticket. I was leaving out of union station and arrived to the bus bay about 12 minutes before my buses departure time only to find out that my bus had completely left the station almost 20 minutes earlier than the scheduled time. Read some really bad reviews just before my trip. Almost cancelled, but decided the price was good, I would try it out. Arrived to Union Station about 30 minutes before my departure. Waited in a line, where I gave them my name. They gave me a ticket to board. At time of boarding, I dropped my large roller bag at the back and boarded the bus. My seat I booked was open and I sat down. Not the most comfortable, but it's only temporary. We left at 6:03 pm, 3 minutes late, so pretty decent I thought. We arrived into NYC about 15 minutes later than scheduled, but is expected when taking the interstate. Drop off was in the middle of the city on some random street. Not very organized as far as drop-off, but Lyft transported me to my destination pretty easily. Overall, good trip and one I'd consider again, especially for the cost. read more

Megabus has really stopped caring! Where do they get their drivers...do they even screen them? They should have monitoring cameras on the buses not just for the passengers but for the bus drivers also!! The trip from NC to WDC on August 18th mid-night bus. Was ok until the driver unbeknownst to the customers stops in richmond to get gas but then takes a whole hour. He disappears and none of the passengers knew what was going on. We thought it was just a brief stop. That turned into a whole hour. Getting us in DC a whole hour later than scheduled. If this stop was announced in the beginning, perhaps it would have not be so bad and expected. Then the bus driver when nothing was happening would just start yelling for no reason that I saw. I understand it was a midnight trip and he probably did need to stretch and revive a bit. But the disappearing act and then yelling...was unprofessional and very disturbing. I just wanted to get to my destination! Now...I am on my way back home 9 a.m. in the morning. And there was an announcement made a whole hour of standing to board that the bus will be 30 late!! Its seems to be only with this route that the drivers can't get it right or show up on time! Normal people on jobs if they consistently show up late or have performance issues, they are fired! The last trip I took from NC in July, I returned home 3 hours later than schedule. Stranded on the bus. The bus driver this time was great did everything he could to keep all the customers calm including babies and children. Still...Megabus needs to look at this route and see how it can be handled better and hire more professional drivers that can handle the 8-hour drive. MegaBus was once one of the top contenders in the business. Now, they must have changed managment or got too big and don't care about quality service anymore. I don't accept you get what you pay for, because the reasonable prices (which have gone up over the years) was their motto. That's how they drew people and friends and family referred them. The bus line and the drivers were much better. Now...not so much. There are other services that are popping up to get MegaBus a run for its money. I may have to venture over to these...hopefully they will be better. I am writing this review as I am waiting. The 10:00 bus...it is now 10:38 a.m....we are just leaving!
