To be fair, there was a LOT going on and servers were clearly overwhelmed. Two big homecoming parties full of teens and another large high school team dinner. They probably enjoyed the deafening music; us not so much. As a result of the crowds, our service was a bit of a mess-- food coming out of order (mushroom appetizers arrived with desserts), long pauses between courses, promised water/bread/coffee refills MIA. Worst was the second service of "medium rare" steak which was all well done and dumped on the plate by a server who didn't understand our request for medium rare (ironically given the name of the restaurant.) Our primary server did recognize that things had gone off the rails and had fresh orders of steak made for us to take home along with an extra dessert. So we respect his effort to make it up to us, but don't think we'll be coming in again--'at least not on a Saturday night. read more

I saw this spot had a fixed menu for under $25 that included 3 courses (bread, salad, steak) and I had never been so I definitely wanted to check it out. Everything about this place was great for me except the "special sauce" they put on the steak. I honestly felt like it would have been better without and/or definitely less. Carrot cake is my JAM. Anytime a restaurant offers carrot cake and it's more than $7, I'm definitely having high expectations for it. I'll be honest and say that I was underwhelmed and will pass on the carrot cake on future visits. Service was great, the bread, salad, and wine were good, but the special sauce and underwhelming steak and carrot cake are what sways me to rate Medium Rare with 3 stars. I will definitely give it another shot when the menu isn't fixed so I can try some other items on the menu. read more

OMG! This brunch is phenomenal! I can't begin to say how good the service was. Amazing! From the moment you enter the restaurant, you are greeted with welcoming smiles. Our server was Anner. Let me just say, probably the best service I've ever had! The food was really good and the bottomless mimosas were great! I highly recommend this restaurant. Amazing brunch! read more

The food is always excellent--the bread with butter, salad, steak, fries, and adult Sunday. What truly stands out, however, is the incredible team at Medium Rare. They are incredibly hardworking and genuinely kind, ensuring that every guest feels welcome. Their attentive service adds a personal touch that makes each visit memorable. read more

Went for brunch on a Sunday, there was no wait for a table. The atmosphere was perfect, the music that was played was for everyone and children friendly as we had two children with us. From the staff to the food it was a great experience and I would definitely go back! read more

Meh. I went there for brunch on a Sunday. The service was great and the servers were super friendly. I give them a 10 out of 10!!! However, the food was ok at best. I had the Steak Frites and I wasn't impressed. The steak lacked any flavor. The only flavor came from the sauce. Without that it would have been a total bust. The Parfait starter I had was good and the drink was fine I guess though I can't remember what I had. (It was that forgettable) All in all a meh experience. The service was fantastic but just couldn't make up for the lackluster food. I enjoyed going to the farmers' market that was just footsteps away after brunch however. So I highly recommend doing that if you are in Bethesda on a Sunday morning. They have food vendors there and I suspect I would've enjoyed that even more than my meal here. Sorry Medium Rare. read more

Medium Rare - Steakhouses Near Me - Bethesda, Maryland

Have been coming to this location for years, always receiving great service and excellent food, but today was not a great day for Medium Rare of Bethesda. Showed up for brunch around noon to a half-full restaurant, expecting good service as they were not very busy; this was not the case. Started with a coffee that was about 40% coffee grounds (which was replaced by another "fresh" coffee that was also mostly grounds), as well as a bottom-less cocktail that never arrived despite asking twice and other close-by tables receiving multiple rounds. Food was also mediocre, wife got steak frites that only came with one round, not the usual second portion (maybe one round is a brunch only thing?) and no additional sauce, and while my French toast was fine the fruit that came with it was just meh. For the ratio of servers to tables they have, about 90% of the staff was completely inattentive; not making eye contact, not asking for refills, etc.. One lone server, and older guy who had probably been a server a while, was the ONLY person to ask if we needed anything the entire visit (other servers came by AFTER the check had been requested, too little too late.) Regardless, this was definitely not worth the 70 bucks we paid. read more

I've never been to a concept like Medium Rare, and I have to admit, I think it's quite ingenious. I can see how the restaurants benefits, I can see how the diner benefits, I can see why they're expanding in this 3rd location in the DC Area. Mark Bucher who also owns the adjoining Community Restaurant opened the first Medium Rare in Cleveland Park in March of 2011. #TheMoreYouKnow Now... let's talk about this concept. The idea is... you come in... and you have no decision on what you're eating. It's a prix fixe menu... all the time. There is one type of prix fixe menu... and that's what you're getting. Everyone gets the same thing for 20.54. And it's quite a freakin' deal! 1. A bread starter 2. An appetizer salad 3. Steak and Frites with a "secret sauce" 4. A second portion of Steak and Frites with more "secret sauce" There are not many things I wouldn't eat if they were coated in that secret sauce... 1. My hat coated in the secret sauce... I'd 100 percent eat my hat. 2. A bouquet of roses... get the sauce 3. An unidentifiable piece of processed and pressed meat out of a jar that looked like it was from WW2 France... sauce me 4. An old LP named "Greatest Salsa Hits"... mas salsa por favor Now... I don't know exactly what is in this sauce. It is after all a secret sauce... but I'd have to guess something in the way of "Steak juice, unicorn tears, reactions to people winning the lottery, and a butter derivative made out of pure ecstacy." The sauce recipe probably sounds more like a description of Harry Potter's wand than that of a sauce: 11" long, made of holly, and possessed a phoenix feather core. Ohhh... that's what's in the sauce Now... to back track a little... 1. The bread is good. Not the best bread I've ever had, not the worst. It's a nice crusty bread.. and it serves it's purpose. 2. The salad is... forgettable... as in... I literally can't remember the dressing on the salad which was mainly comprised of greens and tomatoes. 3. Fries are pretty good! 3. The steak itself (that's where they lost one star for me). It's not as tender and toothsome as I'd like it to be. I think it's partially the cut of steak, but I also think its the way they cook it. No visible sear, no visible grill marks...but! At the end of the day, once the steak is in the sauce... I mean... it's game over. Now, I am a bit curious- cause I went onto their website and their photo of the steak dish shows a clear blackening/grill/sear on the steak... so maybe our chef was just a little rushed that night. Either way, I'm sure to find myself back at Medium Rare soon. For someone as indecisive as me... who can literally spend 20 minutes looking at a menu and not have a final decision in mind... I love that Medium Rare doesn't even give me that option. Also, Steak and Frites are one of those classic dishes that will not go out of style. And that sauce will 100 percent not go out of style. I'm sure they're looking into bottling it now if possible. They'd be silly not too. read more

great food great service, the steak is always very good and the atmosphere is also nice. Totally Recommend

Hubby and I have been regular patrons at the Bethesda location. Unfortunately, service has diminished during the pandemic. We went last night. Had a reservation. Chaos at the entrance. No one taking names until we stood in a line that didn't move for 20 minutes. And I still got a notice from Open Table that I missed my reservation??? Jacob was nice, but was clearly not watching his tables. Service was slow. We got salad late, finished them, and here comes someone with more salads. Meanwhile, we waited past folks who arrived after us for our entree. Our neighboring table was seated well before us...and served way after. There was no cohesion, organization, rhyme or reason for service. Drinks were late. They ran out of bread (so we were told) so we got that with our entree instead of at the start of the meal. And lastly, there was a dog at a nearby table blocking passage and being fed from the table by the owner. I understand some people need emotional support animals, and perhaps this was the case, but there was plenty of outdoor seating! Folks are allergic to dogs, afraid of dogs, and I find it to be unsanitary to have a dog in a food establishment...especially being fed from the table! The waiters were having a hard enough time moving around...and should not have had to avoid a begging dog! Even though this is one of my hubby's faves, we'll make another choice near-term. Hopefully things will turn around. read more

I hate to denigrate a restaurant that does so much good for the community, but......we walked in & almost left because the heavy music was so loud. Not sure what kind of vibe they're trying to create, but the music didn't lend itself to dining or conversing. They eventually turned it down at our request. It would've been nice to have some background music, but not heavy rock! Steak was good as were the fries. Salad still leaves a lot to be desired with only lettuce and 3 tiny tomato segments. We actually took chopped avocado & more tomato to make a decent salad. I do like to support this restaurant though and will likely return....and still grumble. read more

Mediocre food at best. There's like 3 cars max street parking in front of the restaurant but your best bet is finding a parking garage to park at. Service was great. But the real question was the food great? The answer is it's ok. Thinly sliced and covered in a secret sauce that mostly tastes like parmesan was the main ingredient. The fries were great and had a good crisp to them. I absolutely loved the bread! So crunchy and soft inside. But the steak was a downside with the sauce. It's good for a one time visit to just try it out since the concept is cool (having only one menu) read more

Medium Rare - Eggs Benedict Brunch - With bottomless Mimosas - Steakhouses Near Me - Bethesda, Maryland

Eaten At this location several times before unfortunately the restaurant has been closed due to Covid and the direction by Montgomery County. It re-opened on Valentine's Day and we made reservations for indoor dining on Valentine's Day. Unfortunately when we arrive they over booked the entire restaurant we're on able to give us an indoor table and we were forced to sit outside and 35° weather with a heat lamp above us that provided absolutely zero heat. Being the first day restaurants have been reopened in Montgomery county Maryland and every place being booked we had no choice but to sit there and to freeze while we ate. The manager was very uncooperativeAnd rude. When asked why we didn't get the table that we booked the answer was "everyone booked indoors and there isn't enough seating". I didn't spend over $100 just sit in 35° weather and freeze miserably while eating food that instantly froze while being brought to our outdoor table. I felt bad for the table next to us which was actually in the walkway going into the restaurant. So you think about Covid social distancing requirements and now the table in the middle of the walkway outside the restaurant with zero heat has a line of about 25 people lined up right next to the diner is eating without masks on.None of the tables are the required 6 feet from each other the outside seating had makeshift flower beds dividing the tables with less than 4 feet between them, talk about the possibility of a super spreader event this restaurant has it. While I understand their desire to recoup lost revenue during the Covid events this is not the way to do it. I will never eat at this restaurant again. read more

I'm writing about my birthday experience in March at the Bethesda restaurant (please, Yelp gods, add it to the locations list). From the greeter to the server (who knows his wine - the Malbec pairs well with this exquisite meal, people!) to the back-to-back serving of ample, satisfying, mouth-watering Culotte steak prepared precisely to order - I like my steak medium rare - with the SECRET SAUCE - a COMPLETE WIN! to the fries, to the apple pie that I had to go - we were extremely pleased! Oh and let me not forget the beautiful salad and Artisan Rustic bread (pan de campagne) WHAT??!!! It's located at 4904 Fairmont Avenue, Bethesda, MD 20814. Worth every dime (and more) - and so reasonably priced - Prix fixe menu $22.95! BRILLIANT! When we need our red meat fix again, we shall return! read more

The concept is fantastic, as explained in previous reviews, prefixe menu, salad-steak frites-bread. Actually, two rounds of steak frites. The salad is pretty plain, the sauce resembles a caesar dressing and it is pretty heavy and salty. The bread is great. The steak, at least the medium rare and medium that we had, was lackluster. The secret sauce is very salty. It was lukewarm and slightly matte the first time, and thinner when it came in a metal container for the second round. The steak, without the sauce, would be very dry so you really need something. But the sauce isn't your typical cafe de paris, gravy, Bearnaise, or Bordelaise, but like a combination of all. Although I like the concept, for a restaurant that specializes on one dish and one dish only, I am slightly disappointed in the lack of perfection. The dessert menu, though, seemed very promising. read more

I must say, I really like this place! Some friends of mine and I recently visited here to celebrate some happenings in our lives, and I can honestly say that we all had a really wonderful time. I really like the concept of this place in that they simply have one thing on the menu that being steak and fries (as well as a vegan option). Our steaks were cooked perfectly and I really enjoyed the sauce that they top the steaks with. For $25 you are getting delicious bread, salad, and a generous helping of steak and fries. It's an unbeatable deal and one of the best in the DMV area quite honestly. Bottles of wine are also reasonably priced here as we were able to order a couple of different bottles of red wine for $40-$50 apiece. While the dessert is extra I think that it is well worth it as the ice cream sundae was delicious and quite large so sharing is definitely an option. Finally, this place has fantastic service as our waiter was extremely attentive to our needs and really made our celebration here an enjoyable experience. Try this place out, you won't regret it! read more

I would say it's closer to 3.5 stars. Went on a Saturday night with some friends. Had reservations and were sat almost immediately. Service was great. The knock surprisingly was on the food. Sine the menu is fixed, everyone gets steak and fries with a salad it was underwhelming. Salad was somewhat wilted and I'm not sure there was dressing on it. Seemed like it was sitting out for a while. The steak had good flavor but came out over cooked. We all ordered "Medium Rare" all came out Medium Well. While they made it right it was disappointing since all they do is steak and frites. For the price, not sure we will go back. Deserts were good, bar selection somewhat limited. read more

The server was not attentive as he never checked in on us. I had to flagged him down twice to request for some ketchup, which was never delivered on my second request. I ordered the 3-course set menu with bread, salad and steak with special sauce, which has many great reviews. The steak was OK, but nothing special as described in other reviews except I guess people gave more stars because the price is reasonable. I would have given a 3 stars just for the food. read more

Pretty unhappy with our experience here this evening. We had a large group of 15 people (13 adults, 2 kids) and had numerous issues. Food was not brought out at the right temperature (for a place that specializes in medium rare meat, many folks that ordered med rare received med well sadly) and we brought a cake to celebrate a birthday. The hostess/waitress informed us that it would only be $4/plate extra and we were shocked to see an extra $150 on the bill as "open food" due to bringing a cake in addition to the $4/plate charge, which was absurd! Had we been informed of this extra charge which was certainly not communicated to us at the beginning, we would never asked them to serve the cake. Furthermore, we were never asked if we wanted our toddler to be served an adult portion (which we did not) and again we were surprised when the bill came. When brought up to the waiter after the bill arrived and we were ready to leave, they only suggested an extra dessert for compensation, which was not feasible. Lack of communication and poor service resulted in a terrible experience here and I would NOT recommend this restaurant especially for a special occasion unless they correct their deceptive billing practices. Probably the most expensive meal all week while we had family visiting and we visited multiple restaurants and had far more food and exceptional service for a better price. read more

Party of 13 with a reservation from a week ago was seated 1 hour 10 minutes after reservation time, 50 minutes before their closing time! The excuse "we are overbooked and had lots of walk-ins"... why then did we even make a reservation and drive an hour from Virginia passing by another location of theirs in Virginia? I've never been to an establishment that respects itself and its customers that does not honor a reservation made and confirmed in advance. Even making the reservation for a large party I had to call and wait for a call back from the manager within 1-2 days to ok the reservation, inefficient and inconvenient. But to show up with elderly guests and have them stand for an hour was a humiliation. I'd never step foot in this restaurant again and if you ever want to have a business dinner or a good-sized group for a special event, skip it and go to a place where your time is respected. read more

I hate that this restaurant is built on a premise of 2 salads (not very exciting), bread, 2 servings of sliced culotte steak with sauce and fries...that's it. I went to medium rare because a friend recommended it and he said it was pretty good. It's funny because I didn't bother to look up their menu beforehand so I had no idea what cuisine they offer. We went in Saturday and they have brunch special for $28 where you get one app, one entree, and bottomless drinks. Pretty good deal if you drink a lot of mimosas like me. I ordered a fruit Yogurt parfait, French toast and sausage, and a couple mimosas. The yogurt parfait was nice and light with some big granola chunks in it. The French toast was huge!! It was 3 big pieces of French toast with a sausage and it was pretty good. Wish they give you more than 1 sausage though! My friend that recommend the place ordered steak and was pretty disappointed they didn't give 2 for brunch. He came for dinner one time and they gave him two servings of steak and it was cheaper than his brunch meal. He wasn't too happy with his visit but I was fine with mine. read more

Medium Rare, is it gimmicky or genius? Probably a little bit of both, but I dig it. The whole premise of Medium Rare is you get, bread and butter, a simple salad, and 2 portions of steak and fries with gravy per person for $20. I happen to love the gravy, steak, fries and all. For each portion you get about 6-8 slices of thin culotte steak with gravy and fries. I like to order it rare and it always comes out perfectly for me. You def need both portions to get full. I like how the food is served consistently hot, since you're receiving the portions fresh and hot off the grill each time. The meal will be filling if you're gorging everything, bread, salad, and fries and all. If you skip eating the bread or salad, the 2 portions of steak and fries will not fill you up. Some people might not think the amount of food is worth it, but I love the simplicity of ordering and knowing I'll always get a solid, consistent dinner from Medium Rare. read more

How does this place get good reviews? First, we sit down and all the plates at our table were dirty & glasses as well. The server was nice he switched it all out. We were going to get steak and eggs til the server told us the eggs were all premade and would be wet with cheese as well. We ordered two steaks with fries and skipped the eggs. We love cheesy eggs just not premade wet ones. Salad course omg two cherry tomatoes cut in half with salad greens. Comes with their house dressing. No, we could not get the dressing on the side? House greens were pretty dead that was not a great beginning. One plate came to the table cold. Both plates were so salty and inedible. I do not dislike salt on a steak at a steakhouse this was like they took the salt shaker and dumped it on it. We like salt this was gross. Golden Corral makes a better steak, seriously how? We ordered medium steaks. One that was cold was way beyond medium and. the other one came out medium well. Both were bad. Gravy again salt was beyond overwhelming. The fries were ok nothing special one was hot the other was cold. The bread was good. Crusty and soft inside. Our server was fine. Nice enough. Never refilled waters never came back to check on anything like removing our salad plates? We were at a two-top no room ugh. This place needs better management. The servers are not the problem management is. We will never go back to waste $70. Monami Gabi is around the corner by far a better steak. read more

All it takes is verbal abuse to recieve a $30 giftcard. We were seated a half an hour late from our reservation (which is fine since it was holiday). However, at an hour and 15 minutes since we are seated, a customer came up to our group and told us that "we were taking his table" and if "we need linguistics training" and shoving the chair into our table. It felt very sexist and racist. The restaurant instead of telling the customer that they are running a half an hour behind, shoved our group under bus and told the customer we were holding up their reservation.
