A PERFECT experience. Excellent service and all our food was amazing…read more A small-ish family restaurant that we happened to see while working in Owensboro this week. My colleagues and I were staying in a nearby hotel and after driving past Famous Bistro I checked out the Yelp reviews. So many five star reviews! We decided to give it a try and made reservations for a Thursday evening. We dined outside because it was a perfect October evening. Our server was wonderful. We started with spanakopita bites which the chef recommended and they were flakey and delicious. The homemade bread was excellent. I ordered Salmon Dijonaise and it was served with herb roasted potatoes and Brussels sprouts. I also ordered a side of haricot verts. Everything was perfect, and the salmon had great flavor. My colleague ordered a small spinach salad and Sundried tomato pesto penne. Servings were generous and we ended up asking our server to box up half of our entreès. Lunch for tomorrow, yay! The food and service could not have been better. Highly recommend this family restaurant.

I had the salmon pita with lemon chicken soup. The salmon cheese mixture on the pita was unique and beyond YUMMY! My husband had the grilled tuna and bacon on wheat with potato salad. He's not much of a foodie, but he seriously enjoyed both and ate every bite, despite the large portions. We live 40 minutes away but Famous Bistro is going to be our new favorite. Great wait staff too! They were hustling and attentive without being pushy. I can't wait to go back!

I think there is a price difference of a couple dollars. The portion of gyro meat with both the sandwich and the platter is very generous. I actually got two meals off the platter. The place is small but it's big enough and bright and clean. The owner is super friendly, but since they're preparing things as you order, service isn't the fastest but maybe that's better. He prepared the fries and my chicken wings to order as well as the meat whether it be lamb or chicken. In addition to chicken and lamb gyros, they have a variety of platters; kofta, falafel, shawarma, grilled shrimp and Philly beef. Don't know about the last one, I guess it could be good. The lamb tasted great, no gaminess at all, the vegetables were fresh and the tzatziki sauce tied everything together for a delicious bite. The rice and salad were great compliments to my gyro platter. On an impulse, I got the wings, and after one bite was ecstatic that I did. They did not look like they were gonna be good and maybe to others they may not be. I think they're frozen out of a big bag, pre-made just need to throw it in the fryer for a few minutes. Anyway it had this weird orange hue to it just like the friend chicken from Pioneer Chicken . If you grew up on the west coast or Hawaii that was the competing friend chicken chain to KFC. I think there's only one restaurant left in Los Angeles. This fried chicken still haunts my dreams, I have half a mind to road trip it to California for a family pack of delicious fried chicken. Sorry, I digress. Anyway this fried chicken wings tasted a whole lot like Pioneer Chicken. As I started this review, best gyros in the area, plus their rice wrapped in grape leaves and the baklava were very good.

I woke up this morning and said to myself, "self, you need to have a good gyro today for lunch."…read more After polling my family and Yelp results, I found Sam's and I'm really glad that I did! No one was there on a Saturday around lunch time. We ordered from a pleasant fellow at the counter who quickly put our beef/lamb gyro sandwiches together. Everything was super fresh. Our order of fries were fried to order. Two gyro sandwiches, one order of fries, and one beverage came out to $22 even. They'll take your card but a nearby sign says that they prefer cash. I didn't see anything about those dumb credit card fees, so hopefully that doesn't exist. The place seemed quite clean. No concerns there. There are several tables for dine-in. There is no outdoor seating. When we arrived, the pleasant fellow was jamming out to what I would describe as trendy Miami Beach hotel lobby music - a little bit dance club, a little bit ambient beats. He turned it down, but maybe should have turned it off. If it was left at the original volume, I'd have docked a star just for the hit to the already limited ambiance. The food was STELLAR. I commented to my favorite dining companion that we could come back for a gyro anytime. He agreed. The pita bread was toasted perfectly, the veggie components of the sandwiches were fresh and bright, the meat was pre-cut from the rotisserie but was perfect and plentiful. You'll have to eat some of the sandwich insides before you can fold it taco style and finish it, so grab a fork and dig in. The fries were those chunky style ones that were fried to crisp perfection and dusted with a seasoned salt of some sort. I did not check to see if the Heinz ketchup at the table is actually Heinz or if they are refilling the bottles (iykyk). The sandwich is plenty for lunch - you don't need fries or a side to get a filling meal. The location is easy enough to get in and out of for a quick escape if you order takeout. I did notice an advertisement for delivery, but it wasn't Uber Eats, Grubhub, or DoorDash. I'll be back! I do love a gyro but I plan to try the salads and platters. I hope you stop in and give it a try! Enjoy!
