This is a move that never happened because we couldn't get past the phone call portion. I don't know if it's because I'm much older than the exclusively 20-something females that answer the phones, but I felt like our conversations were an exercise in futility, condescension (on their part), and overall frustration (on my part).
My daughter is moving, and although I have my loyalties elsewhere for a moving company, she heard about this place and asked that I call. I figure it couldn't hurt, and I would compare this quote with the other company I usually do business with. Naturally, I Yelped this place first to make sure it got high marks. My daughter had a business card from the contact person at Meathead, so I asked for him, but I quickly learned that nobody gets to talk to that sales person until I fill out some information online ahead of time. Essentially, my daughter is moving her bedroom and all its contents, plus a scant few other items into an apartment. Nothing overly dramatic or complicated, but.........
The second young lady who called me upon my submitting the checked off form immediately requested an in-person meeting for which I indicated there would be no need. She had all the information as to what would be moved, and frankly, nothing was left out being the detailed person I am, and also, having moved a few times before with other companies (as recently as last year), this was nothing that couldn't all be handled over the phone, and often times, with far less information being exchanged. She kept pressing for an in-person meeting, and I kept saying it was unnecessary and that I work during the same hours they wanted to come out. She would not take 'no' for an answer. I asked what the purpose was for making me fill out a form if they were just going to ignore it. She couldn't answer that.......and of course, I wouldn't be allowed to speak with the young man whose name was on the business card my daughter had.
We then embark on a discussion about what is to be moved, and every time I wanted to explain the slight complexity portion of the move (picking up from one place, dropping SOME at a second location, and dropping some more at a third location), she wouldn't let me talk.......she always thought she could finish my statements, but she was always wrong because she never bothered to hear me out... or listen. I finally got her to listen once and for all.
I then asked her about the Yelp coupon, which I must now chuckle about, because it VERY CLEARLY SAID LAST MONDAY that 3 coupons could be purchased for one's self, while another 3 could be purchased as a gift. We argued about it, she said it was ONLY ONE that could be bought for one's self, and I even sent her the link showing her, and voila, it has NOW BEEN CHANGED to match what she said. Last Monday, it said otherwise, but I guess she showed me now. I have the other version printed out, but whatever, I won't need it. Doesn't she know, the customer is always right, plus even if they erred in what they MEANT to say, I can still read, and I know what it said. Buyer beware. The irony is that my original question to her was whether or not the couponS could be combined with another $25 off coupon.......never got that answer because she kept saying it's only 1 coupon to the 3 coupons I read.
I'm saving the best for last........we finally got to the quote part, which felt like pulling teeth to me, and after trying to be so calm when I wanted to rip her head off (the tone she used with me throughout the conversation was maddening), she announces that the move for a lousy bedroom's worth of furniture plus a few more items was going to be a minimum of $975 but no more than $1166. That's double of what the other highly reputable, nationwide company quoted me. Does she think I was born yesterday?
Just last year, my brother and I orchestrated a far more complex move with an entire household of items going to SEVEN different locations, and with 3 men, the entire move cost $945. I became so irate that when she asked me "how does that sound," I told her, "It sounds like we're done here. I will not be needing your services," and I hung up the phone.
I am utterly astonished that I had to endure this conversation only to be quoted such a ridiculously high amount. Either this company is rooted in greed, or she didn't know how to prepare a quote. While I'm sure the young male movers do a fine job of moving, the management needs to re-examine how much they charge... there are many other companies out there with far more years experience doing the same moves for far less in cost. Just because I'm much older than any employee of this company doesn't mean I'm senile. read more
