When I left my table for two at Meat People yesterday evening I felt it was solidly between three and four stars. Not being able to decide, I turned to my husband for his opinion. He agreed it was still a bit rough around the edges (to be fair, they have only been opened for a month) but that the bartender, Jeff, had made it a four star experience. And I completely agree with him.
The evening started a bit strange. I received a call around 6:30 reminding me of my 8pm reservation. Surprising because I was certain I had booked for 8:30. We walked in at 8 and were seated at the small bar that has been squeezed in the space where S&M had kept their coffee maker (oh how I miss their omelettes...).
Like the rest of the diners, we were greeted with a glass of prosecco and shown a cocktail menu. Next to me, waitresses piled dirty glasses and Jeff explained that the glass washer wouldn't be delivered until next week. Until then, he had to make drinks, coffee and clean all of the glassware. He was fighting a neverending battle, but did it with a bit of a chuckle (unlike one of the servers who couldn't help loudly complaining about one of the tables). My husband ordered a gin ricky that was crisp and refreshing while I went for a classic champagne cocktail. As the clock ticked closer to 8:30, we were brought some chorizo and salami to nibble as we waited for our table. When our glasses were empty, Jeff saw us looking at the wine list and mentioned he could let us sample a couple as bottles had already been opened for an earlier tasting and we knew what beverage we would pair with our steak before we were even shown our seats. At 8:30, a woman came by to seat us. "We're right on time," she said. Well...kind of...but we didn't much care as we had enjoyed that 30 minutes at the bar.
Bread was brought out shortly with butter and a little ramekin of sea salt that we kept on the table for the steak. I started with the special, which was pig's trotter carpaccio. Unfortunately, all of the taste came from the dressing of red onions and greens and I had to spit out bits of cartilage that I had neglected to trim. I didn't finish it. My husband had the mackerel which was prepared simply and arrived juicy and flaky.
For the mains, we both had the ribeye. We asked if they had a piece that could be served for two and the waitress shook her head while saying we were the second people who had asked that night. Oh well...the individual cuts they did have were big and thick. I can't tell you how disappointing I find a thin steak and this was not a problem at Meat People. The steak was so big, in fact, that my husband gladly had to finish the last few bites from my plate. (I think I got a little carried away with the bread basket.) I sprung for the blue cheese sauce, which was an extra 2 quid, but I thought was entirely worth it and there was enough to share and dip some chips into as well. My husband choose asparagus as a side, which does not appeal to me in the least, but he devoured the thick stalks that were covered with a poached egg and thick flakes of cheese.
I didn't even bother looking at the dessert menu. I was so full that it would have been painful to read.
I can't say I'm planning my next trip already, but I'm sure I'll wander in again at some point. I've been waiting for a steakhouse with some character (sorry Cote Brasserie, you don't count) to open in Islington and I got my wish. read more
