The staff here actually knows about products and it's easy to find an employee when you have a question. I also compared prices and McLendons had lower prices than Home Depot!. It's worth the extra time to come here over the big box stores. You tend to run into the same sales associates, which is a big deal for those of us who are returning customers, and you can usually get good advice. I have dropped off random damaged hollow core doors and come back a week later to pick up perfectly matched replacements with the hinges and door pockets routed out. This is a valuable service. I made the mistake of going to home depot where they couldn't help me but they took care of me here even though I bought my supplies from a different store. I love Mcclendons! Especially this one in Kent. They're always so friendly at this location. Even if they don't know the answer, the staff are very good about finding somebody who does. I went to this location once to buy parts for my new Traeger grill. I wasn't entirely sure which model I had at home (was a Costco exclusive model) And was trying to figure out which of the two smoking racks they had would fit my grill. They let me take some of them out of the box and try them in their smallest traeger. That way when I got home, it would guarantee they at least fit my grill read more

Went here over after Home Depot and Lowes because we are repairing our own water line leak at the house and needed advice. These employees know exactly what they are doing and showed us what parts and tools we would need to get the repair done. Since all local plumbers were booked over for a full week, we decided to do it ourselves. I recommend going here if you are doing your own home repair or projects and need some advice on how to proceed. I have been a weekly McLendon customer since 1980, and I never thought I'd say this but my most recent experience with a snotty Kent store manager has ended my business with McLendon. I had purchased a Poulan weed eater from them that developed a simple problem of the starter recoil not retracting. I tried to get McLendon's to repair it and they said they wouldn't service it and wanted me to call Poulan, (not good service but fair enough). Poulan has a terrible warranty process and they directed me back to their warranty service centers which included McLendon's. 6 of 6 of the warranty service centers around here refused to service Poulan (I also would not recommend Poulan). Poulan eventually sent me a part to fix it myself but that didn't work out. McLendon had told me since they couldn't repair it and if I wouldn't be able to fix it myself or get it fixed somewhere else they would refund my purchase. I really wanted to keep it and get it repaired but after a month talking to Poulan, McLendon's and several other service centers repair I gave up and returned it to McLendon's. The store manager (a different one) now refused to provide a refund and said they no longer carried Poulan and seemed to think that got them off the hook for responsibility. When I said that was not acceptable, she got very snotty and implied I was lying about previously being told to bring it back for a refund if nothing else worked out. Interestingly after being told they no longer carried Poulan I found Poulan mowers in their store. She made this much more difficult than was necessary but eventually did refund me under protest. McLendon's has always been a bit more expensive than Home Depot but I supported them because a few of their people are helpful and I remember a time decades ago when McLendon's was outstanding, but sadly this is no longer normal. Home Depot has better service and better prices, so I will no longer be a McLendon's customer. Knowledge and customer service are no longer criteria to work at or manage at McLendon's, too bad. I have always had great service in here, but one trip stands out. I was tired of our shower dripping, and tore apart the valve to fix it. I took the ball, seals, and springs with me to the store to find replacements. I was in plumbing when a kid (looked like a kid to me) asked if he could help. I held up the ball and said "this is from my shower". He told me the brand of valve it came from, and asked me if my house was built in 1976 (it was), and explained they stopped making them that year. He pulled three separate kits (springs, seals, seat) off of the wall and sent me on my way. Try that at Home Depot. read more

The store is fairly cool but the management is crap. I had a neighbor who was semi retired who worked there for 12 years who was fired when he advised a new employee that they needed to call in if they were going to be late or not coming in or they might get fired. Since when is it not an employee's place to advise another employee (new) of what the rules are? (Yes that employee that he warned got fired for not showing up to a shift). If this is how you treat loyal employees, why in the world as a consumer would I expect to get treated any better? I would rather spend a little extra than deal with a company that shows zero respect to their employees. (especially older employees) It hurt me to see him tear up telling me what happened to him. Excellent and knowledgeable staff. Wide ranging product choice including a selection of odd things that you just can't find anywhere else. The staff see you looking puzzled and ask if you need help. It's the only place in town to get a forest service fire rake. That's an unusual tool which is oh so useful for so many things. There is so much more there. It's like a toy store for big guys! My only grumble is that cell service in the store is not so good, then again, if I can't call my spouse to ask about the tool I'm sure I need I'll just have to get it. read more

Horrible customer service!!! Came in looking for some tape and we're taken down an aisle and dropped off by someone who was ready to just go home as he told other coworkers. We looked down the aisle and realized we were in the wrong section. So I went over to a group of three employees (1 the same guy) where they were talking bad about McClendons and their work schedules. I politely interrupted them asking for additional help and was told we were in the wrong section and to check the other end of the store. Meanwhile while this lady was telling me this she didn't make eye contact..whatever was on her computer was more important. I asked again where she was trying to send me and she said she thinks they don't carry the item we are looking for and to try somewhere else. Horrible service will not be back. After being raised around the company and working for this store I am glad to see the improvements made better customer service as well as management which was the reason I left. There was still some employees I did not care for working on my last visit but new ones seemed to know what they were talking about and possessed service skills which made it a nice shopping experience. read more

The Sumner store is closed at 5 for ladies day despite Yelp showing the store to be open today until 8. When I called to ask about this they hung up on me. Not good for customer service. Apparently the only prior notice was a sign out front. But this doesn't help anyone who doesn't drive by the store on a daily basis. Hardware expertise and consumer service has gone way down since I started going here over 10 years ago

Upon entering the store and splitting up with my female companion to look for different things I was followed to the electrical department, where I was hovered over by multiple employees for the better of 15 minutes. I was asked if I needed help to which I replied "No thank you, I'm in the right spot." Then i was questioned what I was working on, to which I replied, "Just wiring some speakers." after which there was no response. This female employee, who continued hovering over me actually seemed more concerned with having multiple people be aware that I was to be watched, than helping customers who may or may not have had legitimate other things she may or may not have been able to help with. I began to become aware that this had become an issue of profiling! I gradually gathered my items that I had selected and headed to a different area of the store. This is when it became obvious as the woman rushed up very quickly behind me and validated my suspicions. I outright asked her "Are you following me?" To which she quickly replied "It's my store, I'll go wherever I want to." I was floored! I had done nothing to provoke this treatment and found it very offensive. I then told her that I didn't understand why, to which I was repeatedly given the previously mentioned response. As if she had practiced it in the mirror at home, just waiting for her next big opportunity to let it out on someone. This woman was completely rude and condescending in her tone and not to mention, MUCH TOO CLOSE for social distancing and I was truly uncomfortable because of this. Now I had said "Okay lets go then, I've got quite a few more things to look at!" seeing in a way if she would really continue to keep up as my pace through the store is generally pretty quick. Also to which I might add, I have spent quite a bit of time and money in this store for years at this point. I was in fact there twice just yesterday! In any case she continued following me, passing off other customers questions on to fellow employees so as to not interrupt her stalking. My female companion then rejoined me after a quick text explaining the situation. Thinking the presence of a female with me might for whatever reason change her attitude and discriminatory actions. I have really no idea why, but low and behold it did nothing to halt her aggressiveness. In fact it only led to multiple employees now following me/us. I began getting aggravated to the point of stating to my companion that this woman was profiling and, OH BOY, did she not care for that! Now I will admit I could have remained a bit more level headed, but I had had enough when she rushed up on the two of us and told me that I can't and wouldn't be talking like that in her store. Quickly after which I asked what exactly I couldn't say "IN HER STORE", to which she had no reply other than "You know what you said!" I questioned by once again stating that she was profiling me and this is when a gaggle of these women, as if waiting just around the corner, all swarmed upon us and said I would not be cussing or talking like that in the store, to which I justifiably, in my opinion said, "I'll say whatever I F$@%*^! want. Freedom of speech!" I again stated they were all profiling and was told not to say that and I said they were all crazy among a few other choice ,but not uncommon, things in my defense. This is when they told me to leave. I said I had left some items for return at the front desk upon entry so as to NOT be mistaken as a thief. This which I had done every other time I had a return, as a courtesy to the store without ever being asked to even do so.I stated I wouldn't be leaving until I had my money back and as a good patron waited my turn in the social distanced line to do so. At this point it all became clear as to why I had seen police in the store on many other occasions and knew not why. One of the women, without reason of any kind was already on the phone describing me to law enforcement!!! Unreal. I then had to restrain myself so much so that it was all I could do not to completely explode on these people. I decided to grab my items for return rather that wait and give them the satisfaction of seeing me explain myself to the police, and in turn take up my valuable time. Screw these women and their discriminatory practices at this store. I've never been treated like this and let all the customers who were unlucky enough to bear witness to this know, however crazy I may have looked, of the injustice that was transpiring. Upon leaving, it wasn't even enough for these people for me to leave, but i was followed out of the store. I my best estimation, this was to also describe my vehicle to the police, as if I had done anything wrong in the first place!!! UNBELIEVABLE!!! Granted there are good employees there. I mean I've been a return customer for years. But NEVER AGAIN!!! Guess big box stores win by default. A real shame..... read more

If I could rate this as "0" stars, then I would do so. On Wednesday, 5/6/2015, at approximately, 4 p.m., I was in this store. I spotted the blank keys. There was an older man at the counter, writing from an 8 1/2" x 11" to a yellow-lined pad. I waited because I figured he was doing something important and would acknowledge me when he had a moment. He continued to ignore me. It was NOT as though he did not realized I was present. He *knew* that I was standing there. Shortly, thereafter, a young man (employee, who barely, glanced at me) approached him. The young man asked where he could find the "brackets." The elderly man said, "Oh! You want to know where the brackets are? Let me show you." They walked off together. I took my purse out of the cart and LEFT THE STORE!!!!! I WILL NEVER RETURN! MY HUSBAND WILL NEVER RETURN!!! I am telling my colleagues, clients, friends, family and anyone who will listen, to NOT shop at ANY of the McClendon stores! I would rather spend more money, somewhere else, than step foot in ANY of the McClendon stores!!! I was shocked and appalled! Ruth A. Warner **** UPDATE **** Today is Saturday, May 9th, 2015. It is the day before Mother's Day. Yet, the response from the McClendon Hardware Store in Kent was almost, immediate. I was impressed. One of the store managers called me and left a message. He profusely, apologized and wanted "to make it right." I returned the call, shortly thereafter. I went to the store, within about an hour. I asked Customer Service for that particular manager. He had gone home. Ok. No problem. I'll come back on Monday, as I told that manager I would be there on Monday afternoon. "Oh no," she said. "Talk to him." She pointed to a fellow employee. He and the other supervisor knew who I was, as did Yvette (another employee with whom I had earlier, spoken). I never gave them my name. I never told the Customer Service gal my name. These people went OUT OF THEIR WAY to be kind to me. Wow! Talk about VIP treatment! It was nice and they were incredibly, busy. Also, I was informed that the fellow who originally, ignored me was prepared to apologize to me, as he was working today. No thanks. I'll pass. They didn't just apologize and throw a gift certificate at me. They treated me like GOLD! I must admit that their treatment of me was impressive. They always seem to have that part or item that you can't find at the other big box stores. Always helpful and I love the cashiers. The reason I only gave 4 stars is because the paint department is not very good and they don't seem to know what they are doing. I bought some paint there and went back to get more and they had me waiting for 45 minutes while they struggled to get it right and they never did. Me and my husband love this place! The people are always so nice and helpful! I bought a bunch of ceramic pots and this man helped me load them into my car. Great sales on certain weekends too. I went about a month ago and received a $20 GC for spending over $100, some promotion that weekend, it was a pleasant surprise! The staff is great, like family. read more
