Today was my first visit to McGrath's Fish House and it is my mom's favorite place to go with her friends from the senior center. I ordered the Seared Ahi Tuna Salad, iced tea, and fishermans stew. My daughter ordered the kids popcorn shrimp, salad, strawberry lemonade, ice cream. The food was really good and the servers' friendliness made us enjoy our meal even more. I thought I would stop in for lunch and I'm so happy I did! I asked to be set outside when no one else was sitting outside and Cody my server said no problem! Then I ordered the lunch special shrimp and penn caprice with light olive oil. And a side salad with blue cheese crumbles and the dressing on the side (the side salad came with the meal). First the salad came out within 10 min and it was huge and fresh with lots of toppings! (It could have been a meal all by its self)! Then not too much longer came my main dish..... it was AMAZING! I went there for the all you can eat platter and upon arrival the waitress was not welcoming. I explained that we didn't eat pork and was brought the marinara noodles with bacon, I asked if it was bacon and told no it was just spices, I asked her to go ask and she returned and said yes it was in fact bacon. I asked if we could get some without the bacon on it and she replied "no" we don't do substitutes, I explained that I didn't want a substitute only leave the bacon off. She got very snotty and said I can order you more of what you have. We waited about 25 minutes and still no food, as 2 other couples came in and were served their food within 10 minutes. I gave up and asked her to put it in a to go box as we had had enough. And... I had to ask for coleslaw which was left out of our order. I made several attempts to contact the manager and left a message and never got a response. Very disappointing as I just moved here from Vancouver Washington where my coworkers and I met every month for dinner and I hoped I could do this with my new coworkers. By the way.... Here on a quiet Sunday night. It was not very busy. We were sat promptly and greeted by our server quickly. My boyfriends cocktail and my glass of wine arrived quickly as did our salads and bread. My wife and I jus celebrated 25 years of marriage and thought we would return to the site of our first date--kinda. The original McGrath's is closed and so came to the Salem restaurant remaining. At 7:20 pm there was no wait. Our server was prompt and--unlike many of the reviews here--over-attentive; it was a bit grating. My wife ordered a mixed drinks know which she did not like. We did not say anything but it was interesting that she was never asked about the barely touched drink. I ordered a glass of "house white wine" (listed at $4.25 on the menu). The server asked which kind of wine I wanted and offered Pinot Gris, Chardonnay and Riesling. I was ambivalent and chose Chardonnay. When the bill came I was charged $8.99 for the glass. I offered a protest but was told she gave me the cheapest Chardonnay they had. Our orders were both mediocre. My stuffed sole was a bit heavy although the fish was well prepared. My vegetables were lukewarm at best. My wife's cranberry salmon was swimming in a sauce that was not evident from the menu description. Service is so bad that I'm sitting here during the dinner writing this review. Came here for a birthday dinner. My mom and I did the ayce platter, my sister did the clam strips. I called ahead to see if there's a GF option for the pasta and got told yes. The waitress told me no at the resultant which is fine I did not make a big deal of it because it's not a big deal but how the waitress came and told me about and said 'it is what it is' after I already told her it's ok is so rude. They got my sisters order wrong which didn't even come until we finished our food. Didn't apologize for that. And I asked for another portion since it's ayce and the waitress said you know you can't take it to go right with attitude like do you still want it? Like what? Did you think I was cheap and gonna take it to go and would've said no I don't want it anymore? I understand ayce means no to go. I get there everywhere is slow because they're short staffed so I did not mind how long everything was taking but when the service was this bad and waitress was rude it's not ok. On a visit here in May my daughter and grand daughter were enjoying (what they believed to be) properly prepared food. In between the booths there is privacy glass and below it is an open area to the floor. Unaware of this, my 4 yr old grand daughter propped up an iPhone to keep her busy and quiet while the adults were eating. The phone fell between the partitions to the floor and while peering in to figure out how to retrieve it, you could see food and other items had been inadvertently dropped into this hole on a regular basis. The restaurant is claiming they're unable to reach the phone which would also indicate they're leaving rotting food for the local insect/rodent population to dine on. I'm filing a report with the Health Dept. to investigate their lack of concern on cleanliness and a claim with the local police Dept for theft, as they are refusing to retrieve the phone. I definitely do not recommend patronizing this restaurant with their lack of: customer service, cleanliness, and integrity. "UPDATE"-the phone started tracking again so they obviously retrieved it but failed to notify us. That's theft. We reported it stolen. read more

I made the mistake 2nd time here ordering steak, it was dry and not cooked like it should have been, or the seasoning was off, or it's just a cheap cut. But the chowder, appetizers, fish, all good. Made reservations for what was supposed to be a relaxing Thanksgiving meal at McGraths in Salem. Made reservation for 4:30 for 4 of us. Ordered the Thanksgiving turkey dinner for all 4. We were told up front that there would be a 30 minute wait, so we ordered the sample plate of appetizers which came in 15 minutes because we were very hungry. They were overdone but at least we got some food in us. After ONE HOUR, we were told they were out of turkey dinner! So, no place to go, we ordered off the menu. Got our mediocre dinners 45 minutes later, mostly cold. They did comp dessert, but even that was like pulling teeth to get. Had a similar experience with overdone steak about 2 weeks ago but made reservations for Thanksgiving hoping that was a one off. We are done. Definitely NOT recommended! Used to be good. We go there quite often as they have Reasonable price with quality food, service are pretty good too! She could not understand my request and kept suggesting open seating. Needless to say it was busy employees were understaffed, part of my order got left off, my dinner wasn't placed till clarifying my sides twenty mins after I gave the order. Very simply put, this place has great seafood at a good price! I love their clam chowder. Their specialty salads are wonderful with seared Ahi tuna. I've tried battered fish from the coast but somehow they have perfected the crisp on their cod. Yummy shrimp. There is also a good kids menu. But what really sets them apart is that their service is overly accommodating. I just presented an award to a deserving Vet with a Quilt of Valor and asked if I could use their facility. The host, Parker, had our reservation booked and table ready when we arrived. The manager agreed to store our brought in cake in their fridge and served everyone after. We actually went here for my birthday dinner, and I had the Coho Salmon and was quite disappointed. The salmon was a bit over cooked, it had no flavor or spice added. The side green beans were over cooked and very rubbery. The appetizers all seemed to be over cooked. The waitress was great! Never had a problem with staff. Loved the decor inside, really nice staff and we were there so long we went through a waiter and waitress, both did a great job. First of all, 5 stars for our server. She was friendly but not cheesy and super fast and efficient. Our party of 7 arrived at 1230, got seated at 145. One. Forty. Five. Hostesses were young and obviously inexperienced in dealing with frustrated customers. No attempts were made to inform us of the constantly growing wait time. Instead, they consciously avoided eye contact with us while calling for party after party to be seated. Finally seated and the manager said lamely, "we're just really busy today." He did bring us a bunch of complimentary appetizers, so I'll give him that. Aside from the lackluster customer service, the food is overwhelmingly mediocre. It is institutional tasting. Frozen, microwaved to death vegetable sides and baked potatoes that are suspiciously dry. It tastes like mass produced, churn and burn fare. There is no love. It's all been nuked out in order to turn tables as quickly (haha!) as possible. Overall, disappointing and a waste of money. read more

Ordered wine with dinner which never came after 20 minutes into the meal. Waited 10 minutes for the check to be collected to check out. We are much fonder of Newport Bay for seafood, but went here as an out of town guest wanted to eat here. We will not be going back again as we were at the restaurant for over 2 hours and the meal was mediocre at best. If the restaurant was short staffed, they should have been more up front with wait times. Saturday at 3pm...tried to have a nice meal there and stood out in the waiting area for 5 min with 3 waiters/waitresses passing us without saying a word. When I finally found someone and asked if it was a seat yourself situation, he responded the bar was but the restaurant wasn't and what did we want, we said we were just confused as we had been waiting for 5 minutes. I must have been delirious the day that I suggested McGraths. Delirious, or just really desperate for cheese sticks. Place was dead on a Sunday at lunch. Waitress was nice, but the food was atrocious. I attempted to eat some real fish, but after learning that the crab on top of the halibut Alaska was canned snow-crab, I gave up and ordered plain old fish n chips. Oily, with a puffy batter. Fries are tough--so weird--and taste like old oil. The butter that accompanied my husbands crab legs was obviously old and/or rancid. Sickly snow crab legs, more tough fries, shitty fried "fish", and whatever else was on his platter... yuck! Salads were more dressing that salad. $70 for three of us. **Note: The dishes on the menu are the weirdest I've ever seen. I want to meet the corporate chef and ask him why there are so many nut-crusted and tropical fruit topped fish fillets. I'd also like to ask him why he's creating dishes that call for canned crab. My family has patronized McGrath's since it started. They are locally owned and had a good thing going for awhile, but they are seriously slipping recently. I tend to order a small selection of favorite dishes, so can't comment on a broad selection of menu items. Perhaps they have signature dishes where they are still holding the line on quality. I think most patrons will find when ordering a dinner plate that the sides are very pedestrian---pilaf like some Uncle Ben's instant box stuff, the veggies carrots and broccoli florets. Squid rings are a favorite with lots of people and they used to come with what sure tasted like real aioli, made from scratch. I don't know what the dipping sauce is now. Service is unpredictable. It seems like the owner is trying to hold costs down in order to remain at a certain price point. McGrath's has always been a special treat for valley folks and I would have preferred prices to rise and the service and food maintained at a high level. read more
