I usually get my rock salt here in the winter and garden supplies here in the summer. All departments are helpful. I was in the plumbing department recently and was looking for something very small that I located immediately and the person working downstairs greeted me and asked if I needed assistance. I was told my phone number was flagged because I returned some stock paint and that was the reasoning for my order kept being cancelled and I had to come down to the store to have my id and credit card verified. I've never ordered paint online so this was the first time, and probably last unless Home Depot starts offering better paint. I like this paint, hopefully, Sherwin Williams becomes the paint for Home Depot, the paint is good quality but the customer experience is not worth your time. True Value carries this paint and the experience is different but the online ordering is not as exceptional as Home Depot. Well, my thing anymore with customer experience is, they don't force you into door just go to another location. As mentioned, the manager is really good.

When the time comes, a friendly staff member will likely be there to help you navigate the shelves and find it. We have come here on other occasions for paint and screws. True Value is conveniently located in a street with many well loved businesses in Dupont Circle. Maybe get dinner with a side of hardware store? The last time we went there to buy paint, the employee was unenthusiastic and unfriendly. So we gave it another try this weekend. I walked up to the paint counter. Two employees were having a problem with one of the paint machines, which one of them didn't seem to know how to use very well. I stood there for quite a while. They ignored me. I eventually asked the more experienced-seeming employee if it made sense for me to wait, or if they would be a long time. He launched into an explanation of how he needed to log in. I didn't think that was relevant, and asked again whether waiting made sense. He said yes, it made sense to wait. I stood there a while longer. I asked the same employee how long it would be. He stared at me. I asked if it would be more like 5 minutes or 15 minutes, or some other amount of time. He said it would be at least 15 minutes. I said that he should have told me that a long time ago. He started explaining again about needing to log in. I still didn't care, and explained that it was terrible customer service. Then we left and went to Monarch on Connecticut Ave, where they had excellent customer service. What on earth has happened to Frager's?

Their service is superb--from the initial, design phase to installation. Design Manager Judith Hunter provides exceptional service. She knows her product line, is meticulous and imaginative, and willing to listen to the customer and work out a just-right solution. Judith helped us identify the right solar shades for our windows and size them correctly. She custom designed a room-darkening shade solution for our bedrooms that left our mini-blinds intact (so that we could have the privacy from blinds during the day and the sleep-inducing darkness of opaque shades at night), but retains a streamlined look. I cannot recommend her and Monarch more highly.

Bright, clean store with very helpful staff. When trying to decide on an interior paint color for my family room, kitchen and hallways, I went through multiple sample pints as I tried out a range of colors. Basically, 50 Shades of White. Don't worry, it's rated G and family friendly. The nice thing about this store's paint samples is that when you buy a sample pint, they give you a little foam disposable roller and piece of foam core you can try the color on. Tip for other rookies: to truly see the color, paint it on the wall and see how the color changes throughout the day in natural light and artificial. Don't rely on a little swatch of color on foamcore for anything more than an approximate sense of what the color might look like. The store manager, Craig, was always super helpful and patient on my multiple visits. You can even call ahead an order for a color you'd like mixed so that it's ready when you arrive. I finally settled on a Sherwin Williams color a friend found on a designer blog, Gossamer Veil, that they were able to replicate and also tint 50% lighter. Love my new walls thanks to paint from Monarch Design! Now on to picking out a bedroom wall color...

I went in looking for a few low maintenance plants and Cole walked me through several options with real care and attention. I picked up a Hoya Compacta Hindu Rope, a ZZ plant, a Philodendron Lemon Neon, a Bromeliad, a Crassula Jade, an annual, and a six inch Euphorbia Firestick cactus. Every plant looked healthy and well cared for. Since it was a quiet Wednesday morning, I got very personalized attention, but honestly the service here is always excellent even when the store is busy. The staff makes every customer feel valued, no matter how many people are in the shop. The prices are higher than big box stores, but the quality and care of the plants make it worth it. This is easily one of my favorite plant shops in DC and I always leave feeling excited about my new plants. Thank you again to Cole for the great recommendations and wonderful customer service.
