I'm glad to have found this place. These are great mechanics that know their business. They replaced shocks I had installed at a Firestone about a year ago. Firestone kept having to replace them, so I decided to find a professional. Come to find out, they were installing them incorrectly and causing them to bend and break. Absolutely the best car repair experience I have had .... if you have got a vehicle that is an older year model that needs a repair , this is the place . Very fair , very direct and very experienced . My 2008 Ford Edge failed inspection , I took it to them and they replaced a sensor and told me to drive it 100 miles and have it re-inspected and it passed with flying colors... Not only are they affordable, but they do great work, and do it quickly. They were able to troubleshoot the noise in my car (axle), replace rotors and brakes, and do an oil change all in the same day. I came to McCollum's Auto Center to get a flywheel and starter installed on my Lincoln Navigator. The price for labor was fantastic $450.00 for 5 hours labor for installing both parts. I didn't have a ride back home, so I waited in a nice waiting room with windows that looked out towards the work area about 50 feet away. After watching some shows on TV, I got bored and began to watch the lone mechanic as he proceeded to loosen the transmission from its mounts. He kept glancing my way as if he was irritated about something. The transmission was loosened and supported by the Plastic pan that comes with a ZF transmission. At this point I started to get concerned about possible damage to the pan. He took the old flywheel that had damaged teeth off, and replaced it with the new one. He then started to put the transmission back in place, but was obviously having problems. His frustration turned to anger as he began to loudly complain to the owner Winston McCollum. This soon turned into a tool throwing childlike tantrum. Keep in mind that I can't hear what they were yelling about, but they all were shouting at each other. I watched as the mechanic slipped many times with the crowbar into the undercarriage as that transmission was being forced into place. At this point he was being assisted by the owner and another mechanic. This was truly hard to watch. When they continued to try and force it back in place I watched in horror as transmission fluid began to leak out of the torque converter!!! I immediately went through the door that leads to the work bay, and over their shouting at each other asked, what's going on. Adjectives were coming out of Winston's mouth as he approached. "Those damn German transmissions"!!! "40 years I've been doing this, and I've never had a problem". I asked Why this would be any different than the millions of vehicles that share the same transmission like Ford, BMW, Jaguar and more? He said I'll take care of it, as he took on a defensive posture. I will get a quart of ATF from the parts store. I told him this takes a specific fluid, and that I am concerned about putting in a generic product, and that he will need more than a quart. He called someone from Plano Transmissions to show them how to put the transmission back in place, and when he arrived he did what took them hours to try and do in a matter of 20 minutes. Winston put a quart of ATF Through the fill hole above the pan, and I didn't see any fluid run out of the hole as per proper filling procedure. I told him I was concerned that the transmission is short on fluid. " What do you want me do" was his snappy response. I said, I want the transmission to be filled properly. How much can another quart of ATF cost? He became belligerent. "We are under a lot of pressure from you watching us"!! "Nobody watches, and you were watching us all day." I replied I was watching through windows that you have in your waiting room specifically for that purpose. I didn't think that being 50 feet away, and through glass was forbidden. Why don't you cover the windows if it is forbidden that someone looks through them!! To make a long story shorter, I'll skip through the paranoid statements he made. When he finally finished, he gave me the keys. and had the worst attitude. I turned the ignition on, and it made a constant clanking sound. I went back in and called him out. What is this sound? "It's the first time I hear it", me too I replied. He said "it's probably the flywheel shield, it needs to be hammered flat. He was nice enough to lend me his car, and kept it over the weekend. On Monday he said the car is ready. He had contacted Plano Transmissions for advice again, and it turned out to be the brand new starter from O'reilly Auto parts. He said he replaced it with a rebuilt one and that the rebuilt is better. After two days the rebuilt starter began to grind at start-up. I called Winston and he said to bring it in on Thursday. Upon arriving for my appointment he tells me, "there is nothing I can do for you, this is a common problem with ford 5.4L engines". He said he read all over the internet that this was a common problem. Speechless and disgusted, but not wanting an altercation, I left. I went to O'reilly auto parts and they told me that he returned the brand new starter and traded for a rebuilt one, and made a profit off of me. read more

I wish I lived in Plano so that McCollums could work on my car whenever I am in need of a car repair. I was traveling from Austin to Dallas and was in very desperate need of car repair as my car started to make a bad noise while driving that distance. It was by sheer luck and a blessing from God that McCollum's Auto Center was the first auto shop I came upon. Mr. McCollum was able to pin point the exact problem within 2 min. of driving my car. He not only fixed it but was able to fit it within 1 and half hours. What could have been a wrench in my travel plans ended up being a very small inconvenience. I had all 5 of my children ages 3-13 with me. I did not have to rent a car, nor come back the next day. We merely waited in the cleanest car shop waiting room I have ever been in. Seriously, I am tempted to plan car repairs around a trip to Plano or the DFW area. McCollum's is first class business! I sent him a thank you card, I was so impressed! read more
