Penn Steaks - Cheesesteak

Penn Steaks

We were in State College for a cheer clinic, and Penn Steaks was just around the corner from our…read morehotel. We met Lance, who both struck up conversations with us and made us feel right at home and even offered us water while we waited. The cheesesteaks were outstanding. Huge portions with perfectly seasoned steak. The next evening we came back for dinner just after they had closed. A woman saw us outside trying to come up with a backup plan and kindly invited us in to see if they could still help. Her husband Brad invited us in as Lance remembered us from the day before and they happily made us sandwiches. They were also cleaning out the ice cream machine from the day and gave us and passerby's free shakes instead of letting them go to waste. The food was amazing, but the kindness and customer service were what really stood out. Penn Steaks is now our State College go to! Check them out!!

I love cheesesteaks when they're made correctly, and Penn Steaks got it right! Truly excellent; I…read morewish I visited this place sooner. Super fresh rolls with the right texture that have some give, some squish, but still held up well to being stuffed with the steak, cheese, and add-ins/sauce. Also good quality ribeye steak that's well chopped. I prefer mine with provolone and sweet peppers, along with marinara on top. But honestly, these cheesesteaks are good enough with just steak and cheese. The fries here are shoestring, which is perfect if you don't want soggy fries when you let them sit. Penn Steaks uses beef tallow which gives it a bit more savory taste. I'm not really into beef tallow for frying, yet I still enjoyed then. I'd still prefer Five Guys fries over these. But don't let that stop you from trying them! And the service was fantastic. The person taking my order was polite and helpful. I even met one of the co-owners who was very friendly! A great guy to chit-chat if you like that sort of thing. I learned quite a bit from him during my visit. They sell their cheesesteaks in 6", 9", and 18". The 9" is generous and should satisfy most people. I might be able to finish an 18" if was really hungry and didn't add too much to it, but I'd be in pain afterwards! The 18" is better for sharing. I'll stop by more often for a good cheesesteak. Next time I'll get extra cheese on it. I know I'll probably be addicted to their cheesesteaks sooner or later. Edit: added photo of their cheesesteak

If you know McClanahan's, then you know, they have everything. This downtown location is in a very…read moreconvenient location and has pretty much everything you could possibly need at a convenience store. Really gigantic! We needed some beers to go on the way to the annual white out football game and were able to score a couple pounders for six dollars. Pretty reasonable if you ask me. There is a separate register for beer and wine sales so make sure you head there. We didn't shop or order any food here, but those are good options for those in need.

I previously reviewed Mclanahans when I first moved to town and decided it's time to re-review and…read moregive them that extra star. Mclanahans is still far from perfect so I'm really rounding up for 4.5 stars, but considering what it's surrounded by in State College, it's definitely closer to the 5! Grocery and deli: I think I've only purchased minor groceries here and don't rely on it solely for food due to the cost markup but it sure is convenient! They have a nice variety of household items and groceries and alcohol so it's nice to have that so close to home or work for folks. The deli I've only recently started going to but have greatly enjoyed their daily specials (meatball Mondays and their Sunday Turkey and Gouda sandwich). They use Boars Head meat, of which I'm a huge fan and struggle to find at other places up north. A's Pub: this little pub up at the front of the building is my favorite indoor place to drink in the entire town and if it's not crowded it really is one of my favorite places I've ever been for drinks! The setup is self serve taps- you prepay on a special card and then take that card up and pay for the pour, however much you decide to pour. This is great for folks who just want to taste test, or don't want a full glass at all. They have beer, a seltzer (usually), local wines, and more recently have added a local craft cocktail on tap as well. They've also expanded to have a walk up cocktail bar (not on tap, made to order) that I have yet to try but they certainly will have something for everyone. Not into alcohol? The grocery side has a plethora of bottled beverages (including new health craze drinks like kombucha and special probiotic sodas) to choose from, as well as snacks and sandwiches, all of which you can bring into the bar area and enjoy. During weekdays this area is pretty empty and a great place to eat a quick lunch. Evenings, especially Friday and Saturday, the place fills up for happy hour (an incredible deal, 1/2 off draft prices, meaning you can get a pint of beer for $1+). They often have live music on Fridays and I will say I'm not a fan- the space is too small and the loud music plus the clamoring of college students is too much for my ear drums so I prefer to go not on Fridays. Otherwise their happy hours are a blast and they have a good sized space for groups. I am going to miss Mclanahans very much when we move, so if you are in town give it a try and toast to Abi O!

The Greek omelet was light, fluffy, and packed with flavor. The Pesto-Port Egg Sandwich was simple but absolutely delicious with a perfectly cooked egg and great pesto. The Balsamic Garden Avocado Toast was as beautiful as it was tasty, with fresh ingredients, creamy goat cheese, pickled onions, and a rich balsamic glaze. The Spicy Mango Sriracha grilled naan was incredibly unique--the sweet and spicy combination worked perfectly. The fresh-baked pretzels are a must-try! We took home several varieties, and they were warm, soft, and some of the best we've had. Even the latte and biscotti were excellent. On top of the amazing food, watching the staff handcraft and bake the giant pretzels right behind the counter added to the experience. Everyone was friendly, welcoming, and the service was fast despite the café being busy. If you're in State College, this place is absolutely worth a visit. Fresh ingredients, creative menu, outstanding baked goods, and genuinely kind people. We'll definitely be back!
