Mclanahans is still far from perfect so I'm really rounding up for 4.5 stars, but considering what it's surrounded by in State College, it's definitely closer to the 5! Grocery and deli: I think I've only purchased minor groceries here and don't rely on it solely for food due to the cost markup but it sure is convenient! They have a nice variety of household items and groceries and alcohol so it's nice to have that so close to home or work for folks. The deli I've only recently started going to but have greatly enjoyed their daily specials (meatball Mondays and their Sunday Turkey and Gouda sandwich). They use Boars Head meat, of which I'm a huge fan and struggle to find at other places up north. A's Pub: this little pub up at the front of the building is my favorite indoor place to drink in the entire town and if it's not crowded it really is one of my favorite places I've ever been for drinks! The setup is self serve taps- you prepay on a special card and then take that card up and pay for the pour, however much you decide to pour. This is great for folks who just want to taste test, or don't want a full glass at all. They have beer, a seltzer (usually), local wines, and more recently have added a local craft cocktail on tap as well. They've also expanded to have a walk up cocktail bar (not on tap, made to order) that I have yet to try but they certainly will have something for everyone. Not into alcohol? The grocery side has a plethora of bottled beverages (including new health craze drinks like kombucha and special probiotic sodas) to choose from, as well as snacks and sandwiches, all of which you can bring into the bar area and enjoy. During weekdays this area is pretty empty and a great place to eat a quick lunch. Evenings, especially Friday and Saturday, the place fills up for happy hour (an incredible deal, 1/2 off draft prices, meaning you can get a pint of beer for $1+). They often have live music on Fridays and I will say I'm not a fan- the space is too small and the loud music plus the clamoring of college students is too much for my ear drums so I prefer to go not on Fridays. This is clearly a student favorite, with amole seating capacity and plenty of coffee. It was well-inhabited by sleepy students during my ex May visit. I ordered a basic poppy bagel (toasted) wiith cream cheese. Service was quick and friendly, with a generous schmear of cream cheese. The bagel was tasty, and in the middle (in my experience) of the amount of poppy seed. I'd definitely recommend Irving's though it is probably a madhouse during the school year so plan your visit accordingly.

I'm not positive but I've heard they were the previous owners of the legendary "Schnitzel's tavern" in Bellefonte (which burnt to the ground with the Bush house)? Their menu has a variety of items with sandwiches, entrees, etc. but the german section is truly delicious. My favorite, pictured, is the badischer schnitzel. My wife tried the "broadway" sandwich. Our 1/2 ham tasted a bit off, as it was far too salty, even a few layers deeper. I felt bad having to bring it back in for an exchange, but Jasmine alleviated my embarrassment. She even surprised me by taking different hams to the back to cut off pieces for me to try. That ensured we got a good ham, and sure enough this ham tasted so much better! The replacement ham we got this year brought back all of our fond memories of Honey Baked Ham. I really appreciate that our local store is run by Jasmine. I found it to be quite a good store, with everything you could want: my weird health-food desires like coconut flour and buckwheat groats (that I usually have to visit specialty stores for); pharmacy supplies; lots of pre-made food; diverse international offerings; plenty of organic and pre-cut produce; flowers, etc. Despite it being my first time, I was able to navigate it without too much difficulty. When they were out of green onions, a friendly worker was able to refill the bin quickly for me (and direct me to the spacious, clean bathrooms). They have tons of checkout lines, only a couple were open with humans; and they have lots of self-checkout too. I mean, it's just a grocery store, but it's a pretty good one!

Being able to pick up my (large) bakery order and not leaving someone disappointed at home makes me happy. Had my list of must haves. I meandered through all the departments. Wasn't on a time schedule. I spent 2 hours in the store. Found beautiful baby lamb chops. Filets were $6/lb cheaper than my grocery store. Bought beautiful endive. Had to bring home the red wine peppered salami. Coming home, opening the cooler, and handing out foodie presents is like Christmas morning. The oohs and aahs were heard at multiple houses.
