I need to talk about the margaritas here because they are HUGE. Maybe not the size of full grown human head but pretty darn close! It literally took mentionable arm strength to lift this full margarita...or maybe I'm weak. Either way, I loved it. The food is good solid food. It didn't blow me away (thus the 4 stars) but I definitely was not disappointed. Another great thing about this place is the types of dip you get with your chips. In addition to the traditional salsa you typically get, you also get a whole bean dip and spicy salsa verde. The service is good as well. My husband frequently confuses our wait staff with his order so the pleasant demeanor of our waitress was appreciated. This place is my new Mexican place of choice! read more

We took a last minute trip to California for my birthday, and upon our arrival the governor had closed all bars and restaurants for dine-in. For my birthday dinner I wanted Mexican food, so we chose here. We obviously had to get it to-go, but I'm so impressed. We got SO much food. The portions are huge. They gave us chips and salsa in generous amounts without even asking. To top it off, the bag had napkins and plastic utensils... important when you're in a hotel. I stopped in about 5 o'clock this evening for dinner. The restaurant wasn't real busy, and had plenty of wait staff. I was alone so I opted to sit at the bar. I read a review that stated if you don't dine here frequently that you will not get waited on. I didn't think much of it and stopped in for dinner anyway. After sitting at the bar for over 10 minutes, watching wait staff come and go past me, nobody even acknowledged that I was sitting there. Although, since I had been seated, two gentlemen came in and sat at the end of the bar were served right away. They were chatting with one of the wait staff. My BF and I were visiting Redding, and based on many great reviews (especially from out-of-towners) we decided to give Mazatlan a try. We were hoping they still had their patio open (apparently they recently closed it), however the inside atmosphere was nice and it doesn't hurt to escape Redding's 100+ degree weather. We were immediately greeted by our server Carina. She was very friendly, attentive, and knowledgeable of the menu. The chips and salsa they serve are ligit! Both are fresh and house made. We started with Tableside Guacamole, which I was impressed that they had as I have only seen it at chain places (awesome!). For drinks we had the Jalapeño and Cadillac Margarita. The margarita mix taste house made (not sweet and sour) and were delicious and not too sweet. The only preference I have is that the Jalapeños (in the Jalapeño Margarita) were cut bigger, due to the pieces going through the straw. For the meal we ordered the Sampler de la casa and the veggie fajitas. The sampler was your typical fried sampler, however the veggie fajitas were flavorful and not overly salty. My family was up in Redding for a family event (with members of the family coming from Arizona and Los Angeles) and was looking for some good Mexican food for our other family from Wyoming. Mazatlan definitely delivered!! The margaritas and chips and salsa were so yummy... I got a jalapeño margarita that did not disappoint. Very fresh and flavorful... definitely no cheap mix used there. The food was also amazing! Hugeeeee portions so consider sharing if you're not too hungry, but we love having leftovers. Overall, such a great atmosphere and delicious food/drinks. Had much higher expectations based on Yelp reviews and menu looked good. But pretty disappointing meal. Ambience was nice- typical mexican restaurant... temperature inside... pretty hot. By no means am I fond of the super cold Ac temperatures that you are often exposed to in other places, but felt uncomfortably hot. Ordered a mango house margarita- which pretty much just tasted like water. No salt rim. Ordered the fajita with chicken and beef. Least meat I have ever received. For 17.99 I would expect a bit more protein. Usually I have half of the protein left, but I'd say this was 3/4 bell pepper and onions and 1/4 chicken/beef. Another person had the seafood burrito. Honestly the fish tasted like it was not good anymore. Tasted super fishy - just like how bad fish smells like. Should have returned it but the person eating it wasn't sure if that's just how the fish tasted or not. But tried a bit and it was definitely bad. Hopefully we won't get sick.The seafood molcajete was the only item that tasted good and no complaints. However, serving bad food (the cook must have smelled the fishy smell) is unacceptable. read more

I came here for dinner while I was on a business trip. This place was about half a mile from my hotel, so I gave it a try. As with other Mexican places in California, they do a great job with their style of Mexican food. It is like Sonoran, but with a California twist to it. Pleasantly greeted coming in, chips and salsa at table, large menu. I chose the carne asada, which came with rice, beans, and tortillas. $18.95. Came fast, good portion size, and very tasty. Went for a late lunch. Place is cute. Bar looks nice-lots of TVs and they have an extensive bar menu. I ordered the pollo la crema. Hubby ordered chili verde burrito. Mine was good but very rich-not sure what I expected but I wouldn't order again. Hubby said his was good. Next time I would order fajitas or something different. Server was also bartender. What a disappointment! This is the 2nd time we've eaten there and it's just not that great. I ordered taquitos and a combo plate to be delivered and the girl that answered the phone wouldn't stop interrupting me long enough to write down my credit card number correctly so she had to call me back and LISTEN so she could get the number right. The food arrived from the togo delivery service rather quickly so I was surprised that it was basically stone cold. I do not blame Entree Express for this they were very prompt in delivering in my order. The second thing that really pisses me off is that I specifically requested for the taquitos to have everything they top them with to be put in a different carton so they wouldn't be soggy and no sauce added and yep, you guessed it - she didn't listen and they were soggy. They were so much so I had to scrape everything off of them and put them under the broiler to crisp them up. Additionally my combo had a tamale in it that I couldn't even get out of the togo container because it had completely fallen apart so I ended up with a masa mash that was still quasi in the corn husk that I had to heat up. The beans & rice that are supposed to be part of the meal were basically missing except for a tablespoon of each which totally bummed my kid out because he likes those to go along with his taquitos (which we've already established were complete mush). The chips and guacamole were good although those were basically non-existent as well. What I don't get is that I read somewhere in our local rag that the owners of this restaurant also own a couple of other Mexican restaurants in this town that go by different names and they are much better. $23 + tip + delivery for mediocre, cold food, incompetent staff taking food orders so they were not prepared in the way in which they were ordered, missing the two cheapest ingredients (rice & beans) = way too expensive read more

Very nice dinner out with the family. The table side guacamole was delicious, the drinks were reasonably priced at happy hour $3 domestic pints including Sierra Nevada. Wow, what a great birthday treat!! I was going to cook a great German dinner for my birthday but the grocery store meat cutters let us down. So, we were off to find a place to eat. My wife suggested a restaurant we had gone to about a year ago and so we headed that way. As we approached we realized the ownership had changed but it was still a Mexican restaurant. What luck, Mazatlan Grill was even better than the restaurant before! They had a musician playing great latin songs by request (I requested Malaguena and was happy to find that he knew the song!); the service was pleasant, efficient, and prompt (our waiter waqs Jaime); the Margarita's were truly delicious and the overall ambiance was festive and inviting. Oh, I forgot to mention the food, didn't I? Let's just say that I can't remember the last time my family all enjoyed the food they ate AND that the portions were just right. We were full, but not miserably so. And the taste was much bueno! I had the Burrito Panchito Deluxe con Pollo, my wife had the Deluxe Nachos Rodriguez and my son had a Bacon Cheeseburger. We each tried the other's food and I am happy to say that it was all good. If you like Mexican food and a festive atmosphere (with great Margaritas) give the Mazatlan Grill your business and appreciation. They truly earn it. I was in the mood for Mexican food and this restaurant did not disappoint. The decor was beautiful inside and out and emphasized the Mexican coastal culture. I highly recommend the handmade guacamole for $10.99 it was my favorite dish. Raul made my guacamole at my table using a mortar and pestal (like the one used to make the masa for tamales) so I got all the heat from the jalapenos but none of the seeds or bitterness of the jalapeno ribs. I also got the large combo #19 2 chile rellenos with 2 orders of refried beans instead of rice so I could maximize the protein. The combo plate included house made tortillas and was muy sabrosa. I tried the jalapeno margarita and enjoyed the fresh jalapeno in the drink. Raul who made the guacamole at my table was very courteous about my emerging Spanish skills and I enjoyed conversing with him. My waitress was absent and pretty unhelpful, I even had to take my check to the bar counter in order to pay. Needless to say I requested my cash tip go ONLY to Raul. I would eat here again but hope not to encounter that waitress ever again. read more

The first time I went I got the El Diablo shrimp combo. It was interesting. It was a plate of shrimp with rice and beans and tortillas and the fixins. The sauce was spicy, but also very sweet. It was more like a hot and spicy chinese dish. Maybe Kung Pao shrimp or something. It wasn't bad, just wasn't what I expected, or wanted. Figured I'd give them another shot though because the rice and beans and the margaritas were good. 2nd time we arrived for happy hour and I got a 2 taco combo plate. 1 shrimp, one fish. Both were excellent. Fresh tasting fish and shrimp, richly seasoned with a lot of flavor. My only disappointment was that the waitress didn't ask what tortillas I wanted and I didn't think to say anything so they came out on flour. That blew. Next time I'll make sure to say corn. The shrimp was delicious though, as was the fish. I have reason to suspect that Mazatlan Grill is the best place for seafood, Mexican style. The rice and beans seemed a little lacking in flavor this time though. Not bad,but not as good as the first time or the other places in town like Casa Ramos, El Mariachi and Guadalajara. My fiance got a veggie burrito and was plenty satisfied with it. She got nachos the first time around and was happy with that as well. Service the first time was fantastic, though we were one of the only tables to be waited on. 2nd time was a lot more crowded but it was still good and very fast, but a little rough around the edges. We weren't asked if we wanted more chips when the chip basket was empty (even though we would have said no) and I wasn't asked about flour or corn tortillas which led to a little disappointment. But overall it's pretty good. For $29 for 2 dinner plates, appetizer and two big margaritas, we were definitely very happy with our dining experience. My takeaway is that there will be some stuff to avoid on the menu but they likely do seafood pretty well. Happy hour is the best time to go and the clincher for 4 stars. Don't hesitate to get seafood, as it seems to be their specialty.
