Oh my gosh, the Mazama Store is amazing. My fiancé and I have been here a few times in the summer before and have always been impressed, but haven't had a chance to go during the winter until very recently. This time, we had the opportunity to Nordic ski in Mazama and planned our routes to include a pastry break at the Mazama store. There's something so amazing about being able to ski right up to one of the best bakeries in Washington. In fact, I might say that the Mazama Store has the best pastries of anywhere I've ever been.... We both ordered warm drinks, coffee and hot chocolate respectively. And then shared a warm potato hand pie and apple turnover. The pastry is flaky and melts in your mouth, the absolute best mid-ski treat. It's also pretty normal to get a freshly warm out of the oven baked good here. Last summer, I had their strawberry rhubarb pastry and I haven't stopped thinking about it since. The store is also a super cute spot to get any health focused/organic necessities and treats you may need. Staff are very friendly and eager to help. We ended up returning at the end of our ski day to try one of the baguettes. Unsurprisingly, it was warm and the best baguette I've ever had.

An unexpected gem on the way to the North Cascades National Park (from Mt. Rainier). I was in disbelief about how good the food was. If you're looking for a place to stop, don't even think about anywhere else! The staff are so friendly and clearly bringing their A game to the food and experience.

Amazing pastry, coffee and cute odds and ends of the grocery and souvenir variety at this rustic nouveau-hippie vibe shop and outdoor cafe. This definitely seems to be a must-stop for the outdoors crowd before a big day doing the outside stuff. It's pretty hard to choose between their sweet and savory pastries, so try both and take a tip from practically everyone you see carrying one of their fresh baguettes around. Get one! They also do a surprisingly good job at homemade bagels, and I don't offer that lightly. Service inside was lovely, outside was brisk, but understandably so. The line outside never stopped in the hour or so we were there. Enjoy the chill picnic table area and then go on about your nature time. Doggies okay outside, but not inside.

Great place. Gas, food, coffee and general supplies. No trip through this area would be complete without a stop here!

Rude, power hungry little guy would have dimmed the lights if there were any on! We arrived in Winthrop shortly after the power in the entire valley went out due to the fires. Pardners had their generator up and running first so everybody was there getting ice, gas and necessities. Little did we know the grocery store would open or we never would have shopped here. The prices are absolutely outrageous and I know the little power hungry guy at the register was chuckling inside the whole time. He was rude to every customer in the store, wouldn't answer questions, said no a lot and was just generally horrible. Being visitors, we were in a bit of a panic, not quite knowing what to do. We had driven 8 hours to get that far and the thought of turning around didn't sit well with all of our tired bodies so we figured we'd get some food and hunker down for the night. Sandwiches would suit us just fine... hey, no bread... frozen sandwich rolls would be great once they thawed. (Remember, the entire valley is without power for an estimated two weeks at this point.) Power Boy refused to sell us the rolls stating they needed them for the steamed hot dogs. PERFECT! We'll take 8 of those steamed hot dogs then... no can do, generator doesn't operate the steamer... then we'll just take the rolls... no can do, they're mine and you can't have them! I was absolutely appalled at his attitude during the crisis of HIS town. He didn't want to help in the least, just wanted to ring up those sales. We walked out wondering what to do, what to do, what to eat (not what to drink, he sold us plenty of cold beer) only to discover the grocery store had opened! Wish we could have taken all our purchases back to Pardners... We visit Winthrop a couple times a year and have never shopped at Pardners and needless to say, we will never shop there again. Heck, it's a Texaco... may not ever use Texaco again... careful big corporations, these little town hicks wearing your logo and representing your company can give you a bad reputation. Note: I typically don't rant or rate low because of one employee or interaction and this one is no different. Every worker in there (3 men) was rude, disrespectful and "angry" with the customers. Maybe some training on disaster preparedness is in order...

As a famous Earth psychoanalyst once said, "sometimes an IGA is just an IGA". (At least I think…read morethat's what he said; there are some dead pixels on my reading pad, so it's possible I missed some letters.) At any rate, this statement is completely incorrect. (Yet another reason to be skeptical about the human approach to psychotherapy. For heaven's sake, their therapists aren't even telepathic!) Or at least, inaccurate -- at least in this instance. For the Winthrop Evergreen IGA is NOT just an IGA. For those Starfleet personnel who have yet to experience an IGA, let me explain that in general, an IGA is a functional but unexceptional retail environment in which humans acquire routine foodstuffs. And certainly, that is possible here. But this IGA improves on the usual model by offering a solid selection of locally produced goods. That includes a shelf full of soaps, coffees and other local delicacies. It also includes a produce section that clearly flags seasonal items from local farms. For those of us here on research missions, that is a huge time-saver. The Evergreen IGA is an excellent place for Starfleet personnel to satisfy their nutritional requirements. It is also a surprisingly useful place to satisfy their curiosity about the products of the Methow Valley.

It's the only grocery option in town which may be why they don't strive for the highest quality,…read morethe best service, lower prices, nor the most interesting selection. One frustrating aspect is that they close at 7 or 8 pm, depending on the time of the year. aak! Even more frustrating is when you show up at 6:45 and they have already shut down the produce section and then turn off the store-wide lights on you. hint-hint, yeah. I get it. This is the worst! Nothing says "I come first, the customer comes second" than having the establishment run people out BEFORE the stated closure time. The first question that comes to mind here is, "don't you want my money??" but then I realize there is zero competition so you end up with some of it anyway... The staff are largely, individually, friendly, I'll give them one extra star for that.
