I wholeheartedly wish that there was a North 40 outfitters store in my native Southern California…read more But as my younger brother says whenever we visit, this place could not exist like this in SoCal. It's sort of like if Lowe's, Home Depot, Bass Pro, Tractor Supply, your favorite fly fishing shop we're all rolled into one store, with only the best parts manifested in the aisles. And that's to say nothing of the saddlery, garden center, farm supply, and livestock sections, to name a few. The service here from every member of the staff borders on annoying, but in the most positive way... Everyone on the floor, asks you if you need assistance, but they don't pester you. One of them I've ever connected with is knowledgeable, and willing to go the extra mile to not only make the sale, but make you happy about it. On a recent trip, my son popped a hole in his waders-- not a great thing when you're standing waste deep in 30° alkaline water. The gentleman and the fly shop went out of his way to help us find a pair that fit him, and honored the clearance sale price to get him a $400 pair of waiters for under 70 bucks. More recently, the same kid a year older needed a pair of gloves to endure an unseasonable cold spell that had hit the area. One of the nice gals on the floor, explained that they were switching over to spring, but went out of her way to help him find an inexpensive pair of gloves to keep on fishing. Incredible selection, nothing locked up behind security glass like we have in Los Angeles County, and did I mention the cute little baby chicks of every variety? They don't travel on the airplane very well, but if I had a piece of land up there, I'd have chickens all over it because of this place. Hands-down, this is the best outfitter store I've ever visited, and that's saying something. We visit Mac once a year for Fishing, and no trip is complete without at least a few stops at North 40. We may not be frequent visitors, but we're customers for life.

The checkout experience is always horribly. Not enough staff, and those at the checkout are slow…read moreand spots much time chatting with those they know. Professionalism would be appreciated.

i wish i could give negative stars as i'd go negative 100 if i could. So, last Saturday both my…read moredaughters (38 and 32) were out here visiting us, with us were our grandsons, my oldest daughter's fiance and a childhood friend (like an uncle to our grandsons) of my youngest daughter. They all wanted to go to grand coulee (we live outside of city limits) to hit safeway, the variety store and the coffee shop. While they were in the variety store my **14** year old grandson (clearly a minor) wanted to pick something up for his 5 year old brother who was at home with my husband and i. Before i go further i want to mention that we're all mixed race here, my girls are half white (from my muttish white side) and half Mexican (my husband is 100% Mexican but you would not know it, my youngest daughter and this grandson have darker skin as well as one of the uncles). I only mention race/skin color because this becomes important later. So they're all kind of split up in the variety store my youngest was taking the train home to North Dakota and wanted some stuff for her crafting (she uses embroidery threads and string etc). It's a fun store to visit and look at things, get souvenir's etc. and that's what they were ALL doing. So my grandson picks up a toy looking at it to see if it was suitable for his brother and the lady there goes up to him and asks him if he's going to buy that? He's 14 he's not exactly sure what to think and says I'm not sure... she says "you need to leave the store right now!" and other nastiness, again he's 14 he has no way to let his aunt or Mom know that he has to leave the store he's a super sweet kid so he's fighting tears at this point... thankfully my oldest daughter had heard the commotion and saw that this involved her nephew...she immediately goes over and asks the woman why she's talking to her nephew like that, then of course his Mom is now cued in as well as both uncles ... so the lady says "you ALL need to leave the store!" Now keep in mind between all of them they had more than 100 dollars in merchandise ready to be purchased. But they do, they leave without purchasing, they're in the Safeway parking lot and apparently another patron came out to apologize to them, she told them (my daughters, etc) she'd said something to the lady in the variety store how uncalled for all that was and the lady quipped back to her "you're white, what do you care?". I was shocked to hear all this, we'd be going there for the last 20 years and frequently for the last 8 (and i know it changed hands in 2017). I'd even ignored some of the political stuff they had but given the way it leans i should have known better. I felt so bad for my grandson.. To be racially targeted in this way. I am just appalled. (FYI Both owners were there and present so clearly this is condoned). My husband did go in to confront them the following monday.. Their response was more bs... with stuff like "i don't see color" and tried to justify it with a whole mess of bs until he mentioned the other patron was a witness, to which she clammed up (proof this all happened exactly as it's written here). I will NEVER step foot in their store again. Ever. I don't recommend anyone else does either unless you want to associate with blatantly racist people.

So we shopped, they had excellent selection, great prices, clean store, I got everything I wanted for under $100! We were getting ready to pay, and here comes Peter the cashier. He asked if he could help me find anything, and I was irritated and asked for the self-checkout, but there isn't one here. I was nervous about the virtual card and wanted to flounder with nobody looking because I still struggle with that. However, as I said, there isn't any self check out here, which I would normally love. Anyway, so our items were checked out and it was time to pay. I was having trouble like I thought Peter could tell I was nervous and he shut down his lane without me asking. I really appreciated that he said take your time I couldn't get it and he said I can punch in the number if you need me to and I did and we were able to go to that Safeway ever and thanks Peter!
