Mayur Indian Restaurant is in the museum district of Amsterdam just a block away from the Rijksmuseum. I have been going here for almost 10 years. The owner, Manu, always remembers me and gives me a warm welcome that makes this place feel, to me, like more than just a restaurant. The welcome is genuine. All the servers are friendly and helpful. I would call this an upscale Indian restaurant. It is absolutely beautiful inside with mood lighting set to a level that creates a classy and good vibe. If it is warm enough, I'd recommend sitting outside for great people watching. GoPol was my server during my most recent visit. He recommended the 'old Monk drink' made with traditional Indian Rum. It looked like an old Fashion and was pretty good. GoPol brought out the traditional rice cakes with 3 dips: pickled spicy, yogurt mint, and sweet mango puree. This comes with every dinner and it is a great, light way of getting your taste buds ready for a great meal. It was a bit cold outside, so I ordered the chicken soup. It came out hot with fresh chicken pieces, but it was a bit bland for my taste. The Jambo prawn appetizer, shrimp dipped in yogurt and tandoor sauce, was delicious. For the main course I ordered butter chicken, which I have had several times over the years. It comes with a very light basmati rice. As usual, it was tasty and delicious, especially with the cheesy garlic naan. If you are visiting Amsterdam and want a nice meal in a beautiful setting with great people, visit Mayur. Stars awarded for solid tasting food and a friendly waiter, but otherwise the rest of the experience made for my least favorite sitdown meal throughout two weeks of travelling Europe. The restaurant vibe wasn't there. We did the tasting menu which was a had tasty (but not outstanding) dishes of smaller portions. Paneer and butter chicken were good, not great. Lamb was great. I could have skipped the yogurt and lentil mixes. Expensive small cocktails (est $15eu iirc) and slow service detracted from the visit. It took forever to request our check. The restaurant was pretty empty, and I was able to get better food and service for 1/5 the price from Zeeshan Kababish in Barcelona. read more

The only reason they get 2 stars is because I can ride a cab almost right to the front door of the restaurant. I have been here thrice and have always had bad experiences with the service. The quality of food has been alright, except that rice isn't the high quality basmati that you would expect. Also, what's with the serving size no bigger than 2-3 tablespoons full of curry? They even put a warning at the bottom of their menu asking everyone at the table to order at least a main dish. That and the exorbitant prices for slow and impersonal service aren't even the main reasons to avoid Mayur; they are almost deceptive with their reservations system. They will never have a table ready for you, or at least that has been my experience. You will have to wait, you will be rudely told how it's your own fault for not getting seated, and you will still have to read glaring reviews on other websites (possibly scam?) talking about their wonderful service and food. They will tell you that while you wait 10-15 minutes to get your reserved table, you could sit in their lounge and order drinks, except that they don't have a drinks menu (only wine), or even cocktails. I have never seen anyone gladly enjoy drinks in the lounge. Who would want to, especially when they didn't get a table when they reserved one? If you ask them to bring out an appetizer or two while you wait, the hostess would have no idea if they can do so and then simply disappear, never to come back again. After three opportunities I am ready to strike off Mayur from my list of 'terrible experiences that deserve another chance'. read more

Terrible! Overpriced, below average and very disappointing. This isn't traditional Indian food they claim to serve. Opted for the Christmas menu (a thali) and it was so bad. Seems like they have pre-made 3 sauces - sweet, medium spicy and hot. To which they add paneer/chicken, depending on non veg/veg menu ordered. I say this because paneer makhni and chicken tikka masala tasted the same. Nothing like how it should be though. The butter chicken was a dessert. We were served one kebab type less as a starter (on the set menu). I don't know why. The wine we ordered never made it to the table. It's not worth the high price they charge, at all! read more

Located very close to the American Hotel near the restaurant row/tourist shopping area. Very nice decor, feels classy, more upscale, sexy, romantic, good for groups or for a date or just a small group of friends/family. Good service for the dutch (everything seems to be done VERY slowly in Amsterdam). Ordered the chicken tikka masala (sauce was below average compared to the states, but ok), lamb curry (in red sauce, meat was good). Lamb and chicken tandoori (both were great). Saffron rice, good. Okra, salty and smaller than normal in size (the okra), but good. Naan was not good compared to US, dryer and less fluffy, more flat and overcooked. Samosas were also not the same as in the US, smaller, less potato, shrimp tandoori appretizer were good, lamb appetizer was the BEST! Could have eaten that alone. Pakora was overcooked and overflavored. I love Indian food, but to me, this was below par. However for Amsterdam, it was probably average to above average as there aren't many options! After messing up our reservations and being unapologetic about it, we sit 6 to a cramped table meant for 4. Aside from the meat being over seasoned, every curry looked like they all came from the same pot with the exception of some last minute food coloring action. This place used to be the shit back in the day (which was a Wednesday btw) but I'm sure there are much better places out there now. Oh and my ice cream tasted like frozen milk. Great food and great service. I come here every time I visit Amsterdam and each time the food is amazing. The ambience is high end/fancy while the food is authentic home tasting. It's wonderful for groups or couples. They have a full bar and can make any type of drink cocktails you want. Location is awesome as after dinner you can walk around and enjoy the night life. The MAYUR is an awesome restaurant with veryvery friendly staff and amazingly delicious food. It DOES look a little bit on the pricey side on the first look - but after tasting the food, you come to realize that it is worth every cent. 2.5 stars*** Came here with a group of 8 or so w/ reservation for dinner a week ago. The Indian food here was great (liked the chicken tikka marsala) and we had about 5-6 different curries, garlic and plain nann, and mango lassi. The reason for the three star is that dinner took 3 hours because they were so so so slow at serving food (due to lots of BIC Pol and our big table). Also, it was extremely hot in there and everyone at the table was complaining about the heat and the restaurant seemed to have no AC. read more

They wouldn't seat us at 2 tables when nobody was there. Only wanted us to sit next to abnoxiois men all over the table next to them. Rude rude rude. They claim they have "limited seating" outdoors, but woildnt take reservations and wouldn't allow is to wait for the 4th person in our party or eat 2 to two 2 person tables. Basically kicked out because they would only seat is on top of these other annoying gentlemen. Too bad. Usually drop over $400 there and tip. Never again. Utterly rude. read more
