We had a WONDERFUL experience at the Mayhurst Estate! My Mom, sister, and I flew in to experience a two night stay in the Lincoln Suite for a mother/daughter getaway in August. We had the most amazing time and were impressed with the care and the level of detail that we witnessed throughout every aspect of our stay. The breakfasts were incredible and we loved being able to make our own espresso and tea - delicious. Casey and her family went above and beyond throughout our entire experience - we felt very comfortable and welcomed! We hiked the beautiful property and loved visiting the goats since they were so friendly & adorable. The Lincoln Suite provided beautiful, spacious, comfortable luxury accommodations for the 3 of us. We would visit again in a heartbeat! We really appreciated the opportunity to learn more about/personalize early American history by learning about the Mayhurst Estate's origins as James Madison's grand-nephew's estate adjoining Montpelier. If you're thinking about visiting the Mayhurst Estate, we'd highly recommend it and will come back as often as we can. While I appreciated the historical beauty of the estate and also the effort they have put into "restoring" it, trying to create a somewhat picturesque atmosphere, my experience fell short of what was marketed and advertised. The idea of themed stays seems dreamy, they just aren't there yet in fulfilling what they claim. They did not always follow their own advertised agenda nor did they always provide the home made refreshments and such as stated. The rooms are stuffy as none of the windows are able to open to receive fresh air when needed. Also found certain areas not to be quite kept up on cleanliness. There were many mornings where the coffee area was not restocked nor cleaned from the day before. The communication was spotty and lacking as well. Understanding it is a lot to run such a place, there is definitely more to be done to really have the experience that is advertised on social media. Otherwise it was just "smoke and mirrors" for the most part. read more

What a special place! History, beautiful grounds, fabulous architecture, cozy and luxurious rooms, delightful hosts, amazing story, and on and on. We stayed two nights and found it quite relaxing and fun. It's a great jumping off place for exploring wineries, local dining, and historical sites, but equally good as a retreat location. We did a lot of reading on the grounds...hammocks, chairs, and benches abound. Details like coffee and tea anytime, filling and fancy breakfasts with choice ingredients, all homemade, and an abundance of flora and fauna to enjoy made it a bespoke, boutique experience. As we sat listening to the early morning birds from our balcony, identifying all the trees we could spot, my husband said, "Worth every penny!" Agreed. read more

Aww yeah it's yo boy PG who was living large at this place. Lying in the hammock listening to the birds while reading a novel was a peak experience. Delicious breakfasts and incredible ambiance at this historic site. Loved the espresso machine that grinds the beans. The property is beautiful and so thoughtfully decorated and well cared for. There are numerous places to sit and relax, fire pits abound, and the walking trails are gorgeous. The cottage is perfect. Romantic, cozy, and well tended. It has a wood burning fire place, stove, fridge, extra comfy bed and so many other beautiful touches. It is truly a very special place run by an amazing couple. Beautiful place to stay. Very welcoming and kind hosts. They even let us pet their goats. Bed was extremely comfortable and the house is kept well air conditioned. Food was AMAZING. Best breakfast I have ever had! Their apple plan cakes are amazing! The only concern for me was the staircase because it is historic and very old. I was very scared to bring my 1-year-old up and down. If you are coming with children I suggested requested the bottom floor. I wish I knew about the stairs sooner...it just proved to be extremely stressful for me the entire time. Overall, it is a great place to stay if you are looking for a little getaway in the countryside! I would come back again (without my child) haha. read more

We own and operate two major art schools, Bridgeview in New York City and Blue Ridge in Orange, VA. And we have been hosting our art retreats/plein air painting classes for our students at Mayhurst since 2020, when we moved to Orange, VA. We have had probably a dozen large groups coming there where we rented the whole property for 23 or so persons including singles, couples, large families with children of all ages. One of the biggest draws of our retreats is Mayhurst itself. Our participants have come back on many occasions with us and also on their own after discovering Mayhurst. There are just so many features that draw our visitors to Mayhurst. 1. Historic and beautifully preserved picturesque property with old trees and hedges, paths, a goat farm, a beautiful Monet-like lily pond 2. The personable and hospitable family that owns it. The Cashells will immediately answer to any of your concerns/requests and make sure you feel welcome and happy there. 3. Great place for children to experience true country living, freely run around the property, play with the owners' kids, fish in the pond, and get a lesson in artisan crafts like carpentry, metalsmithing, goat milking etc. 4. Most delicious breakfast cooked by Jason, the owner. We've had groups where half of the people would have various dietary restrictions and the Cashells satisfied all of them, making dairy-free, gluten-free, vegan or vegetarian. The owners go far and beyond in their hospitality. We tried to work with other places in the area and many were excellent, but nothing like Mayhurst. 5. As an add-on Casey is a professional photographer and does beautiful photoshoots for the whole family. Picked this place due to proximity to a wedding. Stayed in the Farmhouse Cottage. Overpriced. Infested with stink bugs. YES, STINK BUGS! Breakfast over cooked. Only 1 small mirror and a shaving mirror in the room. No full size. Daughter stayed in another room in the Inn itself. Toilet did not work and could not be fixed. Would not stay here again. My fiancé and I stayed at the Mayhurst last weekend for one night and had the time of our lives. We stayed in the most luxurious, beautifully designed room (Italian Room/Architecture Suite) with a fireplace, jacuzzi tub, balcony, and cozy bed. The Inn was picturesque, I kept taking photos because I could not believe how pretty it was inside and out. Now, for the even more amazing part - the hosts! The family makes you feel SO WELCOME. We chatted with Casey about the Inn, life, the surrounding area - you name it. We spent a morning with their daughter learning how to milk a goat, fed a baby goat, and played in the yard with the other 20+ goats. We are already planning a trip back in 2022 because we loved it so much. Orange, VA has lots to offer as well. We had 2 fine dining meals (Palladio and Vintage) and stopped at a few antique stores. My husband and I were married here on 5/26/19. We returned for our first anniversary. We stayed for 3 days. They are now "Mayhurst Inn & Estates" as they have new owners. They have begun remodeling. I have posted some pictures. They are doing an amazing job! They have a pond on their grounds. I had no idea. You can canoe or kayak. We canoed. It's a small pond but it was fun. They are remodeling the many buildings on the lands. They have remodeled one. They have several more to go. They are also remodeling the interior room by room. I'm so excited to see their progress. They do excellent work. They are clearing out the grounds of dead trees and weeds. Then will be planting fields of flowers, herbs, orchards, and garden food which they plan to cook with. They have live goats. They plan to get other animals as well. As a scratch cook myself, I think what they are doing is fantastic. I wish them great success. They are very helpful and kind people. They helped us organizing our outings and plan our dinners. They provided an amazing breakfast promptly every morning. Their French toast is to die for! We can't wait to go back. read more

For our 5th anniversary, we chose Mayhust Inn because it was the perfect place to celebrate in a grand style while staying local. Mayhust is an 1859 manor full of southern charm and antique luxuries. By accident, we stayed in a different room each night, the Italian Suite and Southern Charm. But it was one of our favorite things! We had so much fun experiencing both rooms, each perfectly decorated to transport you to a different era. Southern Charm gets the spotlight for the best views - the room has beautiful palladium windows overlooking the pond and front yard. The Italian Suite wins the award for the largest room since it's actually two rooms. The adjacent sitting/soaking room has a gas fireplace that sits in front of a large black granite whirlpool tub AND a private balcony. Although the room's decor, the house architecture, and the darling grounds were enough to make this trip unforgettable, it was our hosts, Jason and Casey, that made this trip truly exceptional. From the homemade breakfast to the local recommendations and desire to accommodate our schedule, they made us feel like the aristocracy that likely frequented the house. The whole stay was southern hospitality at its best. Eric and I highly recommend this precious inn to anyone looking for excellent service, delightful breakfast, and plenty of places to explore/ take pictures - did I mention that it's only 20 min from Barboursville, Keswick, and many other wineries? read more

YES YES AND YES. One of the best bed and breakfasts I've ever been to! We stayed in the Southern Charm room for New Year's Eve and it has a jacuzzi tub that faces the fireplace. Jack and Pat are THE most accommodating hosts. And so nice. Talk to them! They are very well traveled and have lived everywhere. In the house they have menus of the surrounding restaurants so you can choose where you want to go to dinner easily. They also host a "wine social" for a couple hours where they offer wine and appetizers. So delicious! On New Years they supplied a couple glasses of champagne and it was a blast! In the morning their eggs Benedict was off the charts. I was so stuffed from the previous night but wanted to finish it. They even had a baked apple with whipped cream for dessert. I was in love with the house. In our room they had water bottles and chocolates, and a sound system with a Tchaikovsky cd of romantic classical tunes as well as a nature sounds disk. The location is secluded and a great place to relax while also being in the middle of Virginia wine country. Barboursville, Keswick, and Horton wineries are all within about 20 minutes. We also took a short drive to do some epic hiking in the Shenandoah National Park on the White Oak Canyon Trail. We stayed for two nights over Veterans Day weekend in the Magnolia Room and really enjoyed ourselves. The room is very quaint and clean with a pleasant view. (The only flaw was a very small bathroom although the shower worked well.). The grounds are picturesque and marvelous. Our two breakfasts, one of pancakes and bacon and the other of peach cobbler and bacon were delicious and the coffee was great. We enjoyed visiting nearby Montpelier (home of James Madison) and the Market at Grellin. We also had two great dinners, one at Forked on Main and the other at Vintage Inn, both of which were also nearby. Mayhurst makes for a great weekend! read more

It was such a wonderful trip and stay at the Mayhurst Inn. The place is quaint, old world and the main building beautiful inside and out. The grounds and the pond with the ducks look wonderful in the light morning fog. Overall, it is a boutique hotel with the hosts making everyone feel great. The home made breakfast is also something to look forward too, being served in the old style dining room with magnificent fireplace and authentic chandelier. I can't express how beautiful Mayhurst is. My boyfriend and I took a much need break from the city and we drove down to the Inn and it was the best choice. Casey and Jason and the kids are perfect. My husband and I visited Mayhurst for a babymoon weekend in Charlottesville. The inn was absolutely stunning - the owners have done a beautiful job remodeling. The grounds were also spectacular. We only stayed one night, so didn't have time to explore the pond/canoes, but we did get to see the new baby goats in the barn and learn a little about milking goats from the owners' daughter (who was so polite and charming in talking about raising the goats). Breakfast was a delicious surprise and the owner Casey was kind enough to share the recipe with us. The location of the Inn is great as well, ~40 min from Charlottesville, ~20 min from Barboursville winery, and ~5 min from Orange. We've already booked another visit for the summer and plan on bringing our 2.5 yr old and 2 mo old! Looking forward to another stay at Mayhurst! read more

This is a great little B&B, with a nice relatively central location to Gordonsville, Madison, Culpeper, Orange and Charlottesville. The perfect home base if you want to visit the sleepy little downtowns to hit the antique stores, or to do the many wineries within a 25 mile radius. Jack and Pat are great hosts, and the breakfast they served was awesome. We stayed 2 nights and enjoyed blueberry pancakes, sausage links and a fruit & yogurt parfait one day, and eggs benedict, potatoes and baked apples the next. The mini-scones were also a hit. The food was excellent, as were the hosts. And every time Jack sees you, he'll ask if you need anything, or if he can make any suggestions or reservations for you. He's a great resource. We arrived to go into the inn main entrance getting bleach water dripping on us as house was being power washed and other doors locked inside the carpets were pulled up and construction inside and out. Noisy and messy Furniture covered in various computers and items of the owners No wine and cheese served as it said on our booking and bill. Only saw innkeeper when checked in. Unable to find the rest of stay The dock they show in pic at pond is rotten and is the bench. Our bedroom and bathroom window treatments were missing the tool to pull them closed all the way so did t have privacy We were told we were the only guest that night yet no clean spoons or cups when we went to self serve coffee. We were told breakfast would be outside but it was raining and the rest of the inn underneath drop clothes or construction so we left not having had any food. We had asked about places to eat and the places were were told about were either not serving food because of covid or were closed. The Inn keeper had no current info on what was available in the area We were told on checking in they were getting ready for a wedding on the week end to come. Very expensive room with promises of beauty and wine and cheese. We got noises torn up construction site and nothing else. If we had been told all this construction and lack of servo was the case we wouldn't ha e booked it. For being the only guests there were no service and at a big price So disappointed after driving up just to go there Arados read more

My boyfriend and I had booked a stay over Valentines Day weekend and it could not have been more perfect. First and foremost the Mayhurst Inn is situated in the most beautiful scenery. The land is absolutely vast and I cannot wait to come back when it's warmer out to explore the property more. Secondly the estate is gorgeous, I felt absolutely transported back in time while still enjoying a 5 star experience. I had purchased the romance package which was quite amazing. Great champagne, beautiful bouquet of roses and delicious chocolate covered strawberries. While we had planned to go wine tasting on Saturday, we had gotten hit with a pretty bad ice storm. Casey and Jason were very fast to accommodate and had made on the fly a lasagna dinner and had wine at the ready. I 1,000% recommend this inn to anyone and everyone looking for a getaway. I have been to a few bed and breakfasts in my lifetime, but I have to say that the familial element of the Mayhurst Inn really makes you feel like you are staying with close friends. There's a wine tasting in the afternoon, cookies around lunchtime, and a breakfast that will not leave your stomach wanting for more. The Mayhurst Inn is also chock full of history. It is right in the heart of some historic moments in Civil War history, and participated in its own: Robert E. Lee stayed in one of the rooms. The rooms and furnishings are well maintained and carry the period charm that you would expect from a house with a lineage and historical surroundings. It also helps that it is in the heart of wine country, so it offers a much better experience and set of memories than the usual lodging options. Lastly, I can't say enough about the folks who operate and own the Mayhurst Inn; they are a real treat to converse and spend time with. I hope that I get the opportunity to visit them and this establishment again for another memorable stay in the future. read more

Jack and Pat were great. We called in advance to ask about bringing our dog and were very accommodating from the start. They gave us a room on the bottom floor with its own access outside for our dog and a beautifully set up room. The wine and cheese from 5:30-7:30 was well set up with a red and a white and some horseradish flavored cheddar, a mild cheddar, and a bleu cheese. Nothing over the top but a great pre-dinner get together. Jack also walked us through local dinner options with colorful descriptions of each. The next morning Jack and Pat made everyone breakfast and ensured that my girlfriend did not receive any dairy since she's lactose intolerant. Breakfast included tea (many different kinds, including infusions) and coffee and was delicious. I would love to return and stay again.
