The cottages (there are 4 to choose from) are well appointed with everything you need and lack exactly what you don't need in a place like this (phone, tv, or internet). The cottages are in Dyke, VA about 20 minutes from Skyline Drive so it's very easy access for hiking. It's about 45 minutes to Charlottesville where you can shop for groceries, go to dinner, or just hang out if you need to reconnect with the city. The cabins have jacuzzi's, full kitchens, grills, backyards with fire pits, indoor fireplaces and board games. They also have a salt water pool in the main house that you can use (and I recommend after a hike!). Personal touches make this place what it is: they've thought of everything. We also loved the fresh cookies that were dropped off at our house and Chuck and Stew always write us personal notes to welcome us to the house. Looking for privacy? The cabins are secluded and you enter them via a keypad on the door so you don't have to check in or out...just come and go as you wish. I highly recommend this place! And will be back in the fall.

Driving up to the property felt like being in a car commercial, rolling hills, gorgeous scenery, and impeccable service waiting the moment we arrived. Check-in was seamless. We stayed in one of the rooms in the new wing, which was absolutely stunning. In 2017, the hotel completed a multi-year, $2 million renovation and expansion, and it shows in every detail. Our room overlooked the grounds and was part of the beautiful new addition. The room itself was spacious and elegant, with a wonderfully comfortable bed and a cozy nook perfect for reading or relaxing. The bathroom was equally luxurious and practically begged for a long shower. Waiting for us in the room was a handwritten note wishing us a wonderful mother-daughter trip, along with thoughtful gifts from the spa. Another nice touch: branded, reusable water bottles to use at the filling stations around the property. I loved this sustainability piece that doubles as a keepsake. During our stay, I walked the grounds, visited the spa, and toured the Southern Living Idea House which is on its ground, though honestly, this is the kind of hotel where simply staying on property feels like a vacation. Because we visited in winter, the pool was closed, but seeing it made me want to return in the spring. The fitness center was well appointed, the tennis court s and area were beautiful, and the championship golf course was gorgeous! I'm not a golfer, but I loved looking at this course from the mini windows and patios overlooking it! I'll share more about the spa in a separate review, but trust me, it is not to be missed. And the on-site restaurant, Marigold, is an absolute delight. Jean-Georges' effortless style comes through in both the ambiance and the food. We enjoyed two dinners and a brunch there, and I genuinely wish I could have eaten even more. Wow. Another standout perk is the fleet of BMWs available for guests to check out and explore the surrounding area. We chose to only venture out once, to Jefferson Vineyard, but there is plenty to explore in the greater Charlottesville area for those wanting more. In closing, this hotel is incredible! Perfectly styled and wonderfully relaxing. I will be thinking about it and my lovely time there for many years to come!

We had a wonderful relaxing stay, the views of the mountains were gorgeous! We like to get out in nature and the hiking trails nearby were awesome, White Oak Falls probably being my favorite. There were quite a few local wineries that were also a treat. The House was very comfortable, it rents by whole house or by room, and although we only rented a room, we got lucky and had the whole house to ourselves that weekend! The kitchen was nicer then my kitchen and such a pleasure to cook in. :) It was tastefully decorated, our bed super comfortable, we felt right at home. Grilled on the patio one night and enjoyed the sunset. It's nice to have a change of scenery! I plan of staying at the Hood House again, and would happily recommend it to others!

If you're attending a wedding at the nearby Early Mountain Vineyard, this is the perfect place to stay; roomy enough to accommodate an entire wedding party. If you're looking for a fun, comfortable, outdoorsy stay in the area, check out the Postcard Cabins instead! THE GOOD: The property is located in a beautiful area. Views are great. I really like the food at Bearr Appetit restaurant -- kudos to the chef! THE BAD: Customer service is poor. I get the impression management must have simply stopped caring at some point. Example 1: I tried contacting the property multiple times before our reservation. Half the time, nobody answered the phone. I left a voicemail once and nobody responded. The two times someone answered, they promised to call me back with an answer to my question, but never did. Example 2: The morning of July 4, only one server showed up on time for her shift at Bearr Appetit. The poor girl was HUSTLING to keep up with multiple tables, indoors and outdoors, in hot and humid weather. I'm standing alone at the host stand waiting to be seated for about 5 minutes. A manager (owner?) is sitting at the cash register counting the money. Finally the manager/owner stands up, starts heading the the kitchen, sees me, and asks, "Are you waiting to be seated?" I say yes. She POINTS AT THE POOR WAITRESS who's struggling to keep up and says, "She'll be right with you." Then proceeds into the kitchen. Finally I asked the waitress if I should seat myself, which she appreciated and agreed to. Example 3: Upon departing 2 nights early due to the condition of the property (discussed below), my wife wrote an email explaining the issues and asking if they'd refund one night as a compromise. It's been a week now and we're starting to doubt we'll ever get so much as an acknowledgement. THE UGLY: My wife and I stayed with our dog in the Speckled Owl cabin. It's a good sized, secluded property, but it soon became clear to us that management puts minimal effort into maintaining it. Example 1: The first thing we noticed was that the ground floor was COVERED IN DEAD MILLIPEDES. We immediately called maintenance, who promptly came to vacuum them up. But in less than 24 hours, the floor was COVERED IN LIVING MILLIPEDES. This made the first floor basically unusable to us. If we needed something from the kitchen we had to tiptoe around the bugs. By Day 2, the millipedes were migrating upstairs to the bedroom. (That's when my wife decided we needed to go.) Example 2: Enormous cobwebs everywhere, inside and outside. Example 3: Patio and terrace furniture was filthy and disgusting. Bird poop and other crap all over the chairs and tables. Example 4: Linens and towels were old and worn to the point that we wondered how clean they were. Example 5: The mattress was awful. You can feel the the springs and if one person moves, everyone moves. Bottom line, we were extremely disappointed in Lydia Mountain Lodge & Cabins. We feel there's a lot of potential to make this into a special place given the wonderful location, but that the current ownership/management has no real interest in the guest experience.

Glass House is in Free Union, about 20 minutes outside downtown Charlottesville. The location was perfect because it felt peaceful and tucked away in the country, while still being close enough to explore Charlottesville, Crozet, wineries, orchards and hiking. The hospitality was what really made the stay special. Kristin, the chef at the B&B, is incredibly warm and welcoming, and breakfast at 9 AM each morning was something we genuinely looked forward to. She personalized meals around our likes and dislikes and used fresh, local ingredients. During our stay we had blueberry ricotta pancakes, peach and Brie cinnamon bread pudding, latkes with breakfast meats, and an egg quiche with sausage and vegetables. There was also yogurt, fresh fruit, smoothies and coffee available throughout the day. The B&B has a very personal feel, with cookbooks throughout the house, unique Nicaraguan tropical decor and themed rooms such as the Chocolate Room, Wine Room and Under the Stars Suite. The bedding was comfortable, with both communal spaces and areas where you could have some privacy. The attention to detail was wonderful. We had a chocolate surprise, and a complimentary glass at the winery for being guests. I'm not much of a sweets person, but the chocolates were somehow exactly what I wanted all weekend, especially with a glass of wine. You can also purchase bottles and chocolates after hours, and they recently launched a wine club. I also really liked that the owner is actually around the property and winery. He was happy to answer questions, talk about the area and share the history of the vineyard, which made the experience feel much more personal. The winery is about a five-minute walk from the B&B and is open Wednesday through Sunday. The glass house itself is beautiful, almost like a greenhouse, with water elements, accent lighting through the greenhouse plants and vineyards located directly behind it. There are places to sit and watch the sunset with a glass of wine or enjoy coffee in the morning. The sunsets were incredible. On a clear night, the colors over the vineyards seemed to change every few minutes, and it was incredibly peaceful. We also saw wildlife around the property. The winery offers chocolate and wine pairings, reasonably priced wine, live music and food trucks. The live music was especially good and covered different genres throughout the weekend. We even had a seafood boil from one of the food trucks. The staff was friendly and knowledgeable. The brewery is another three-minute walk from the B&B and is currently open Saturdays. Having both a winery and brewery on the same property is something I didn't see anywhere else during our trip. We tried the pineapple sour and coconut stout, and they have a light beer coming soon. The brewery itself is also really unique because it was made using leftover wine bottles. There is plenty to do without leaving the property, including a saltwater pool, jacuzzi, live music, food trucks and plenty of places to relax. We also used Glass House as our home base for exploring the area. Carter Mountain Orchard was fun for apple cider donuts, cider and other treats. We visited Pippin Hill, Hark Vineyards, Eastwood Estate and Knights Gambit, each with a completely different atmosphere. We also hiked Humpback Rocks and Crabtree Falls. Humpback is definitely strenuous, while Crabtree was more manageable and had beautiful views. We spent some time in Crozet and downtown Charlottesville as well. We had a delicious meal at Smokehouse BBQ at Piedmont, and downtown Charlottesville's Downtown Mall was fun to explore. Vita Pizza was delicious and very accommodating with our food variations. One thing future guests should know is that most restaurants outside of Glass House are about 20-30 minutes away, so keep some snacks on hand and make dinner plans earlier. Most wineries also close around 5-6 PM, which actually worked well for us because we could enjoy the wineries during the day and get back to Glass House in time for the sunset. Our four-night mother-daughter trip was exactly what we wanted, and Glass House was the perfect home base. What made it even more memorable was the people we met and how genuinely welcomed we felt. There are plenty of beautiful wineries in the Charlottesville area, but Glass House felt different. You get wine, beer, live music, food, hiking, a pool, a jacuzzi, beautiful sunsets and a truly personal B&B experience all in one place. I genuinely think it would be a missed opportunity to visit the Charlottesville area and not experience Glass House. We will absolutely stay here again and recommend it to anyone visiting. You get the peaceful small-town feel along with beautiful, friendly amenities, and we truly can't say enough good things about our experience.
