My wife and I decided to take a little valentines getaway. We took advantage of their mid-week special and got a super rate on the Walt Whitman Grande! We should have stayed two nights! The innkeepers were fabulous and the service was perfect! Erin, our massage therapist was very professional and very good at her art! We had a fabulous massage in the streaming light of the afternoon sunlight in the parlor of our suite! The suites exclusive hot tub was just the ticket! Walden Hall was very well planned and executed with the grace that a southern bed and breakfast deserves! The breakfast was also phenomenal! We will be back as it is not far from home!

    Best bed ever!

There are certain people that find their calling in life, and believe me, Karen has found hers providing a beautiful one stop destination/ultimate private elopement venue along with handling every aspect of our wedding (flowers, wedding cake, vows, officiant, venue, and beautiful photos). We were blown away and are so happy we chose Shadow Mountain Escape, and Karen Riddle for our special day!! We will be back.

It is the coziest little getaway in Luray situated on an absolutely beautiful property. There are five cabins in total that are intended to be a couple's getaway, so the property is always very quiet and peaceful. It feels very connected to nature- we've seen deer very close to each of the structures when we've stayed. We've had the pleasure of staying in the Dragonfly, Bumblebee, and Ladybug cabins and have really enjoyed each one- they all have a similar feel but are built slightly differently. This time around, we were in the Bumblebee cabin, which is quite spacious and shares a structure with the Dragonfly cabin. There was a gas fireplace and a TV downstairs where we spent most of our time reading; there was also a couch upstairs in the hallway outside of the bedroom, and a cute balcony we probably would have spent time on if it was warmer! It is absolutely the kind of place where you can just stay in your cabin the entire time you're there, but it's also located pretty close to Sperryville and downtown Luray if you're looking to venture out. To fully take advantage of SME, I'd recommend bringing your own food or groceries to cook- there's not a whole lot close by (which is part of the charm!), but the kitchen is well-equipped with a microwave, oven, and stovetop. There's a pizza place that delivers right to the cabins, which is nice- honestly, the pizza isn't very good, but it's nice to have the option. There are also bottles of wine available for purchase in your cabin, which is nice to have available. You won't meet two nicer people than the owners of SME, Karen and Ralph. It is so clear how much they love SME and sharing their love of the property, which reflects their travels through Europe, with those who stay there. There will always be a delicious baked treat from Karen waiting in your cabin when you arrive, and if you're lucky, she or Ralph will show you around the property and tell you about the structures, all of which were built by Ralph and designed by them both. They are so friendly and kindhearted and make it such a special place to stay. As just one example- it snowed one of the nights we stayed, and Ralph cleared off our car without us even asking. SME feels so calm and peaceful- it's a true VA oasis. We're already planning our next trip back!

Very private. a fantastic get away and only 1 hour and 20 minutes from DC. Highly recommended. 15 minutes from Front Royal and 10 minutes from Luray. I nearly kept one star because the grill is fixed on the wrong side of the cabin - a gas grill on that deck really would have made it perfect. But, we really had a great time and were incredibly pleased. Bring your food and booze, grab a cocktail and get in that hot tub and watch the sunset.

First, the positives: the location was beautiful and very accessible to hiking, wine tasting and several other great summer outdoor activities. The actual house is nice and very spacious. The negatives: the place was FILTHY. As a family, we decided to tolerate the filth so we wouldn't ruin our family vacation, but as the week went on, it became more and more annoying to accept how dirty it was. After our week-long stay, I contacted the owners and forwarded them a list of issues we found as well as photographs to document the condition of the house. We made it clear that we were not asking for any money back (although if we pushed the issue, I certainly think we would have been entitled to it). I also raised an issue with their ridiculous policy for the OCCUPANTS to wash and fold all of the linens before a noon departure on Sunday, which is totally unrealistic. This policy forces occupants to get up extra early on their last day of vacation to do something a paid employee should be doing. After the second attempt to contact the owner, the response she provided was that she forwarded my email to the cleaning lady. No apology. And No indication that she really plans to address it in the future. For this reason, I am giving it a one star rating. If she had sent back a different response, I would probably be giving it at least a two star rating. If cleanliness of the property is important to you, this place will not be satisfactory. List of issues: - Beds were unmade and the sheets were from the previous occupants (ewww) - I swept a large pile of dirt in one of the back bedrooms my grandmother was staying in - Mouse dropping in the back bedroom - Spider webs in closet - Overgrown lawn - Dirty stove, oven, toaster and refrigerator - Dirt, chips and crumbs in the couches - Hot tub smelled like urine and several jets were broken - Ashes in the fireplace - Mildewed towels in the linen closet (my Mom took all of the linens, washed, folded and put them away because previous renters put away wet towels, due to the ludicrous cleaning policy -- but made the entire closet really stink) - Dog hair on the linens and couches, even though the owner claimed her grandchildren are deathly allergic to pet hair - Remote controls did not operate - Playhouse (pictures on the website) was a mess and had a lot of dead bugs and spiderwebs - There was uneaten popcorn in the popcorn maker. My Dad spent at least 30 mins scrubbing it out before we could use it

We arrived and the valet so kindly opened my door and guided us inside for our reservation. The inn was festively decorated and exuberanted a warmth that was just so welcoming. The staff at the desk was mere incredibly kind. We were taken to our seats and Alejandro our waiter was fabulous the whole night. In fact I can't say enough great things about their staff overall. Catalina definitely made our evening enjoyable while introducing our food and taking our plates. Again everyone did such a fabulous job taking care of us. The FOOD was AMAZING! We ordered the traditional 5 course and each dish was just another challenge to the palate. The balance of flavors and tones. The creative plating. The play on traditional flavors with modern twist. I didn't want the surprise of each dish to stop. We were lucky and during our meal had Chef Patrick O'Connell check on us. We finished the night with a special tour of the kitchen. The highlight-- learning that they have a water sommelier! We didn't order anything but hearing him speak of the different kinds of water We will definitely be back to celebrate large and special milestones. Absolutely worth trying once in a lifetime.

The timing coincided with…read moreVirginia's state tourism office declining to pay a reported ~$360,000 fee to expand Michelin coverage into more of the state. Others see it as part of a wider "reset" affecting other longtime three-star spots like Alinea (Chicago) and Masa (New York), which also dropped to two stars at the same time. I'm not completely sure why the slight decline but here's my honest view. The scenic drive from DC through the Virginia countryside sounds breathtaking--rolling hills, charming small towns, glimpses of Blue Ridge Mountains but in actuality all of the turns and hills made myself and friend sick. We had to pull over and gather ourselves. The restaurant itself is gorgeous, filled with artwork, pink, green and gold monkey wallpaper and Victorian tables, and English country style. It's maximalist--opulent without being stuffy. Our waitstaff made the evening extra special for my birthday. They constantly wished me a happy birthday, asked thoughtful questions about my life, shared jokes, and engaged in small talk that felt genuine and personal. Not to mention the menu with my name. Each course on the 7-course tasting menu was beautifully presented. We loved having three menu options to choose from: a new seasonal tasting (always fresh and surprising), Enduring Classics (with signature dishes like the iconic lobster preparations or herb-crusted favorites), and a full vegetarian Good Earth menu with the eggplant course being our favorite. The unlimited warm bread service with fresh butter and flaky sea salt was a simple but perfect touch. The Champagne options were endless (their wine list is legendary, with a massive cellar and expert sommeliers), and they even offered a dedicated book/menu highlighting rare waters from around the world--everything from iceberg sources to unique mineral springs. I've never seen a water book before. Standouts for me was the caviar egg, lamb main course and tomato amuse-bouche. If you're looking for a special occasion spot (birthday, anniversary, or just because), this is it. Four people will run you around $2500 including drinks. Con- I would work on the cocktail menu (the Diana tasted like cough medicine). Bring back the pear dessert and portion sizes from 12 years ago. My main lamb portion was embarrassing. Reviewers see pictures for example sizes. Please offer a dedicated pescatarian menu. Overall, Chef Patrick O'Connell and his team did a great job.
