    Belle Meade Bed & Breakfast

What a super sweet, comfortable B&B nearby Shenandoah National Park. We spent the evening in…read moreSperryville after hiking Old Rag during the day, and it was absolute perfection! Susan and Mike took care to make sure we had an excellent stay: Susan helped us make dinner reservations at Thornton Grille that were otherwise unavailable on Open Table, and then after we got home from dinner, Mike helped light our wood fired heater. The building is well maintained and very comfortable. Best of all, the breakfast was soo delicious! I hope I'll be able to visit again.

We stayed in the cottage, which is a bedroom and bath with a porch on both sides and wonderful mountain and farm views. We had a good time watching the turkeys running in the field. And a hot tub and large pool out the back (though the pool was too cold for me in late October, of course). The bed was comfortable and amenities were high quality (thick robes, Dr. Bronner's soap, etc). I slept wonderfully well in the quiet. This is also the only B&B I've ever stayed at where the hosts came and tidied the room every day. The only other advantage/drawback (depending on your outlook) is the lack of cell coverage and the weak wifi signal. We had no problem with that, especially because you can always go into the main house and get a strong wifi signal. We did that for a "couldn't miss" meeting one evening and enjoyed sitting in the parlor and checking out the books and rocking chairs. Breakfast was stellar, all 3 mornings. One morning, the hosts (Susan and Mike) made whole-grain waffles using flour Susan had just milled from grain. With local apples baked for the top, a plate of fresh fruit (some from their garden), and a side of bacon. Another morning, breakfast came accompanied by still-warm bran/ginger/whole-grain muffins. And a bowl of local apples was always out. Which brings me to the best part of Belle Meade: Susan and Mike. They are wonderful people with a ton of accumulated knowledge about a wide variety of topics. They were great at pointing us to hikes and bike rides that were beautiful but also within our capacity (we're 67 and 76) and also recommending places to eat and visit. We went to "Flavor on Main" in Culpeper, which was great and "Blue Door Kitchen and Inn" in Flint Hill, which was really special. Staying at a B&B can sometimes feel awkward, since you're in someone else's home. But Susan and Mike made us feel right at home. We'll be back!

Everything is essentially the same, except for the addition of Norman the beagle, a chipper lad who mostly followed his humans around but was also happy to see me after I pet him at the brewery. Breakfast at Hopkins is worth the journey, with fresh and creative offerings. I forgot to note that I have an egg sensitivity, and when I brought it up Katie and Olivia went above and beyond to find something delicious I could eat instead. The brewery is especially cozy in the wintertime, and we love that it fills up with both guests and locals. It was a great spot to play some board games and enjoy some good conversation. Hopkins is also well-positioned to enjoy everything Sperryville has to offer. With only a short drive to Shenandoah National Park and within walking distance of many adorable shops and restaurants, this is one of our favorite spots to spend a few days.

We will be back!!!

Even though there is still a pandemic, and since the CDC has lifted mandates, a lot of businesses have amnesia as to what the US has been through over the last year, as well as the world. I emailed the lovely owners of this B&B and asked about vacancy, and asked about COVID-19 protocols. I asked if breakfast could be served while being socially distant from others and I was immediately "brushed off" from staying at this B&B due to no social distancing during breakfast. There are no alternatives to create buy in for a new customer? My COVID protocol questions were not answered either. The pandemic is not over and being in a state of amnesia will not make it go away. A lot of people lost their lives as well as family. Sorry for us wanting to take precautions (we are vaccinated) but you lost our business. You provided bad customer service. Sorry for the Nasty Nancy rating but I am sure there are positive alternatives to my questions and sorry you are not open to new business. If you are taking precautions, this is not the place to stay. So sad.

Just moments before we were going to walk to dinner at The Inn at Little Washington, it started to pour torrentially. The owner of the Gay Street Inn offered to drive us so that we would not get soaked walking. It was such a nice thing to do, and we really appreciated the thoughtfulness. We did not opt to have breakfast here, but we thoroughly enjoyed our short visit, the comfortable bed, and and cottage-core feel.

It was very reasonably priced and it looked great in pictures. The whole area was nice and quiet but since you're further from the bigger inn it was nearly silent (especially at night). We pulled up in front and there were plenty of spots a little after check in time (3pm). We were struggling to pull up the door code at first but we were let in (I believe by Drew) and welcomed us into their B&B and our room. The room was pretty spacious for the two of us and it was beautifully decorated. It had anything we really needed for the one night. We booked the Bed & Breakfast rate which included breakfast the next morning (sadly we missed it) and two cocktails that we picked the day prior in our mini fridge. We enjoyed both of those and loved that it included mixers if we wanted. The extra drinks were much appreciated as well. The bed felt a little weird for me and got a little sore but my girlfriend seemed to like it. Check out was pretty simple. We basically just had to leave the key and walk out. Drew and Deb really made things easy for us and everything was seamless. If we ever did come back, I would love to stay again.

We swooped in for a last minute getaway for our 25th anniversary--never having known about this area of Virginia--and came away totally stunned with The Shenandoah Valley and its surroundings. We used AI to find this place, and to our delight, Glen Gordon Manor is a treasure that will forever live in our memories. The manor has been under current ownership for about twenty years, and the chef/owner Dayn Smith lives onsite upstairs in the manor, along with this wife Nancy, who did the decorating for the manor. Maddie was a total sweetheart to us upon arrival (and any place we're greeted with a glass of bubbly earns a special place at the top of our list). We stayed 3 nights at Glen Gordon Manor (Sunday - Wednesday) in the Mews Cottage in the Fyvie room (there are a handful of rooms in this cottage). Fyvie was well-appointed and immediately comfortable. The small porch was a spot where we whiled away many hours (both morning and evening). The coffee delivery from the manor each morning was always so nice! If you've read ANY of the reviews here, you'll know that each room is outfitted with a multi-speaker SONOS system which was so clutch! Breakfasts served inside the manor were so delicious, and so filling! Each morning was something a little different--but the formula the same--usually beginning with a bread or scone, followed by honey-sweetened Greek yogurt with granola, and then the main which always featured a farm-fresh egg presumably from the chickens we gazed upon during breakfast. We couldn't sit still long enough to enjoy the beautiful pool during our visit, even though the weather was perfect for it. We spent quite a bit of our time visiting downtown Front Royal and even more time on Skyline Drive doing some hiking! For one of our hikes, we took advantage of the manor's offering of a packaged picnic lunch, and simply loved it. We enjoyed a five-course meal at the very sophisticated Houndstooth Restaurant in the manor, and were totally awestruck. We spent a lot of time trying to decide which dish was our favorite, arriving at a decision of "inconclusive" because they were all flawless. At the end of our incredible dining experience, the chef himself came into the dining room and spent a few moments at each table--what a treat! I overheard another guest comment that the manor has Pappy Van Winkle, why should I be surprised at that?! Wow! The only recommendation we could make (which has nothing at all to do with the Manor) is, try to plan your visit here on a Wednesay-Sunday ... we found that many of the vineyards were not open Mondays or Tuesdays ... and let's face it, this part of the region is wine country so the vineyards are a must! We visited Rappahannock vineyard, which was right up the street. Not disappointed at all!

The cottage has a side expansion with more rooms and a pool complete with covered patio. Outside, there is a beautiful meadow and pond for having an outdoor wedding. There is even a little red covered bridge lit up at night for doing a sparkler run outside. It's the works.
