The hostess is so disrespectful! I called before coming to ask if my service dog (with paperwork) could sit outside for dinner. She said that it wouldn't be a problem. However when I arrived she turned us away and lied and told my family that she told me the dog wasn't allowed. I'm injured and I need the dog. I'm a repeat customer and will not be coming back. I love Mayer's! It's a low key, local, fisherman-style tavern on the way into Cape May. The location is great, and you can usually find parking easily. The surrounding neighborhood around the tavern on the bay block is lined with cute houses. I've been here twice this summer season, and had an excellent experience! The drinks are delicious, and the bartenders are attentive. As for food, I have shared oysters, fish dip, calamari, house salad, chicken entree, and fried scallops with friends. Heard good things so we thought we would try it ... it is small and quaint certainly comfortable but unfortunately the menu is very limited with not many enticing entrees to choose from . Went with the crab fritters ...they were all deeply fried in a thick breading that had zero flavor and the crab inside was non existent ! Very disappointed ! We also tried the fried scallop dinner ...again disappointing ! It is a "one and done' for us but I did see people enjoying a huge "kale salad dish" ...perhaps if your into that it might be a good choice ! I hadn't been to Mayer's Tavern since its change of ownership and refurbishment but I can see why it continues to be such a popular local spot in America's oldest seaside resort. I used to describe it as a dive bar - well as much as charming and trendy Cape May can have a dive bar. It still has a large bar area with some good beers and it's menu is still on the small size. But the food it serves on that limited menu is most excellent. Everyone knows about Mayer's and the local Cape May scallops and indeed they are a real treat. They are technically fried but they actually border on pan-seared. They are among the best scallops I've ever eaten in my life.....anywhere! A starter of toast with a blue fish spread was equally as tasty. And a local Cape May IPA complimented all the food. Mayer's Tavern is back and better than ever. read more

Thoroughly enjoyed my scallops with unique and delicious citrus slaw, and the handcut fries on the platter were perfect! My friend liked the mussels in red sauce with a large wedge of garlic bread. This is a spot with a small menu that does every dish perfectly. The food is quality. The cocktails are amazing and I've had many a cocktail. The staff is extremely professional & friendly and made my 2 year-old feel welcome. If you sit on the deck at specific tables, you can see the sunset in the distance. I saw a review complaining about how they were too strict regarding covid. We're a year in & it's common sense now that if you leave your table for the bathroom etc, put the mask back on. If you act like a toddler, I'm not shocked you'd be treated like one. I'm also sure they are very kind when asking the first time. Our first time here & we went with my son & his family. All of our food & drinks were good except when my husband was eating his burger, he found a piece of wax paper cooked with it. We pulled it off, he ate it & we told our waitress & also the manager & they both shrugged it off & said, we don't use wax paper with our food. We were greeted at the door when we arrived by a very nice host, and sat right away. This place has been on our list to come to since the Summer of 2020 (COVID). Took a chance walked in, and the place was PACKED (Saturday 4/30). As luck would have it we struck it perfectly that there was a table of 2 open in the corner front window. Our waitress was helpful and pleasant. We were looking for a light dinner and she assisted us perfectly. The drink menu is fun and offers many options, loved the Cold Front and Pinot Grigio. Peeled shrimp were delicious, cold and tangy spicy sauce. Very much worth the $12!! The fried Scallops (were not FRIED) more pan cooked with delicious Coleslaw and we chose salad instead of fries. The side order of collard greens D-licious!! If they offer the rhubarb pie and ice cream was absolutely amazing, HIGHLY RECOMMENDED IT!! If you are looking for an off the beaten path, fun rustic restaurant put this on your list. Many peeps took Uber, as parking is minimal. I've been to Meyers before and had high hopes even though it's still Covid times. Food is very good but service is struggling-we sat for a while at the bar- many servers but took a while for anyone to even make eye contact. Too bad because a quick hi can really make the night. But they were all working very hard and were pleasant. Seemed to need a dedicated bartender but if you are going out during these times just prepare to wait. Went on a bustling lively and lovely Friday evening of Labor Day weekend. The band was a playing, the bar was packed but drinks were flowing. The outside deck was bustling. Enjoyed some social time on the deck and around the bar until our table was ready for the six of us. Highly recommend the margarita. Cheers! Warmly greeted upon sitting with the offer to get another round of drinks and apps in. Crab and Corn Fritters were heavenly. Pimento Cheese, damn perfect. Crab and Corn fritter cut in half and smothered with pimento cheese, the gates of heaven opened above. Fried Scallops, get them, duh. Fresh, meaty, sweet, crispy. Served with fries and slaw, can't be beat. Get whatever they are offering for dessert. Stopped by here on the recommendation of a friend. First, let me just say that our dining experience wasn't that of "just a bar." It was simply fantastic. Our server Phoebe couldn't have been any more pleasant - very engaging and was the best. clearly a busy night, but she never missed a beat. Beers cold, drinks are great, food is limited but very good. Had the seafood tower that was so awesome, I really can't wait to return for another. Oysters, clams, and nicely cooked shrimp piled high. Fried scallop dinner - nothing to disappoint. Small serving, but nothing greasy. The scallops where not heavily coated in a batter, which is a huge plus. Flash fried, with an awesome remoulade sauce that was very tasty - handful of fries and a side of cole slaw that wasn't dripping in mayo, again a huge plus. The only thing I would add or change - please add horseradish as a side to the seafood tower. This is our new "go to place." read more

Preliminarily, the venue gets a 1 because I was on the receiving end of some of the worst service by management that I've ever experience in all my years dining and working in the industry and the food was mediocre. My server Diane was a ROCK STAR!! I rarely attribute race to my experience but as a major minority in the town and the establishment, I felt targeted during this encounter. I was dining at this restaurant with my family (party of 9) late on July 5th and they had apparently been slammed resulting in a woeful shortage of items from the already limited menu. FOOD: mediocre, lots of missing items. SERVICE: Due to a mix up owed largely to our party size, at having to re-address a matter with our group that she'd previously addressed w/part of us, the manager on duty approached our table in a very aggressive manner, pointed her finger in one guests face in a tactless attempt to identify the source of the miscommunication and then escalated the incident with incidental and condescending comments which were wholly unnecessary. Our server, Diane, was beyond attentive and accommodating particularly after the off-putting behavior displayed by management. LOCATION: Good. Right over the bridge, just off the dolphin and whale watching dock and a 5 minute walk from our bungalow. DRINKS: Good. Solid pours, good recipes, reasonable prices. All in all, lots of potential but based on my experience and the reality of the trickle down effect of poor management, I won't be returning. read more

Mayer's has been our go to first night of family vacation for several years--food is always good. This year was first time without Nana who passed in June. Apps were great--tuna Tartar was delish--and then began wait for meal. Watched as tables around us had app dishes cleared & got meals. Finally asked manager about the long wait; she was shockingly rude; instead of simply saying, "I'll check on it," she gave us a lecture about restaurant timing, and what we can't judge by timing at other tables--as if we had never stepped foot in a restaurant before. Uh, yes lady, we can judge--that's why it's called timing!We then asked for some bread for the 2-18 year olds in our party who had not had apps and were really hungry, and she said, "Why? Do they need bread?" WHAT? It was like she wanted to pick a fight with us. Who in restaurant management doesn't try to defuse a situation instead of poor gas on it? If she's the owner, she needs to hire a professional manager. If she's the manager, she needs to be replaced. Will be a while before we go back. read more

We were so excited about this menu and the location (right off of the inlet), their outdoor dining area looked casual and empty... however, they told us that our well behaved dog wasn't allowed which is outrageous, considering they had 5 outdoor tables available at 4:30pm on Saturday (their last day of the season). They kept asking when we will start ordering main course,,even before we finish appetizers.. back to back waiter , manager came and asked when were we planning to order.. argument started.. manager said order your food , leave or I will call POLiCE.. it was crazy!!!!!!! After everything settled down we paid the bill,very large if I could say so myself. Hit the spot. Cranky kid after a day at the beach and an insane wait around the corner led us to this place. Unpretentious setting, slightly older crowd but think that was just our dining time. Excellent food - did the Black Sea bass and scallops for entrees and crab fritters and oysters for appetizers, which went well with our local beer choices. Our kid downed the fish, Mac and cheese and blueberry crumble without the usual gripings of a picky toddler. Glad we stumbled upon this hidden gem - it's the small victories that matter. read more

This place is a wonderful little spot (in a wonderful location). The drinks are very tasty and offer unique twists on old favorites. I had the Cape May IPA with the daily special crab fritters to start. I was unfortunately unable persuade them provide me with a gallon of the cilantro dipping sauce to take home (I actually should have asked for one), but I would gladly bathe in it given the chance. It was bright, spicy, acidic, and magical. The scallops are reminiscent of a fried seafood shack platter gone upscale. Big fan. We live about 15 minutes away and a few people had recommended it for its food. Apparently this place used to be a dive bar of sorts: it certainly isn't any more. There's a nice selection of beers, the place is clean and appears to be well run and the food was excellent. I had the soft shell crab special, was was unusual - to me at least - in that is was grilled rather fried, but it had great flavor. The true stand out was the scallops, which my wife ordered. They were deliciously moist, flavorful and fried to perfection, with no oily residue. I would definitely come back for dinner again. read more
