We came here after the pace we were going to go to was closed. It turned out to be a great idea. After our old Chinese place closed (it's under new management, it should have closed though...) we have been on a quest to find a new place. Insofar as a lot of the dishes we have tried here, this seem like our new place. The eggplant dishes are fantastic, and the fried rice is almost exactly like the other place we used to go, which is to say, excellent. Eggplant in garlic sauce is something I highly recommend. It's a veggie dish and it is fantasgreat! read more

do not order a damn thang from may jen on kenmore and bailey !! i decided to walk in there to buy a bottle of water, the guy "i dont know if we sell bottles of water, we never had anyone come here for a bottle of water, ill be back", goes in the back for 2 mins and come back with the water a 16.9 fl oz bottle of water costed me $3.21!! it's 80 fucking degrees outside, i aint feel like arguing the dude down behind the register about it because it was too hot for that shit smh ‍ so i called the restaurant a few mins ago and spoke to the manager and she says "im sorry, the bottle of water supposed to cost $1.95, the same price of the bottled pepsi, ill refund you the credit smh a 16.9 fl oz bottle costs $0.50!! fifty cents !!! the last picture is exactly the amount of water in the bottle, i filled 2 containers with the same amount to show $3.21 of the water they sold me! read more

Enjoyed their food at Taste of Buffalo and, when we discovered they are less than 2 miles from our home, ordered take out. Easy ordering over the phone or through the website. The food is fresh and tastes delicious. Quantities are generous. read more

I don't usually post on yelp but the service was really great and the food was great. It is a little pricey tbh but worth it! Ginger broccoli I recommend read more

This is a pleasant Chinese restaurant and take out shop. The food here is fresh & clean, so you can really taste what you are eating, which I appreciate for Americanized Chinese food. The menu has many options at reasonable price points. The have parking on the side of their restaurant. read more

May Jen is probably one of the best Chinese takeout restaurants in Buffalo. The chicken is real people, it's real. Always flavorful and quality food. It's kind of far from my house but it's worth the drive! Would highly recommend May Jen. I always get the beef with broccoli combo- you get won ton soup, an egg roll, fried rice and your entree. Always super busy in here too- which speaks for itself! read more

This Chinese place is pretty dang good. I've went here since I was a kid and has kept it's quality over the years. I would say they have the best egg rolls I've ever had. The orange chicken there doesn't come with the sauce on it, so you have to pour the sauce on separately. I would say a 6/10 on there orange chicken. 10/10 on the egg rolls and chips with orange sauce. read more

Good food, but expensive. Best bet is to order a combination platter. A specialty chicken dish on it's own is very pricey. We ordered takeout 2-3 times from them. The first time it was very tasty, the last few times not as much. But overall definitely our go-to Chinese place for now. If you google the restaurant online you can find coupons to use in the restaurant or for take-out. read more

Solid choice. Authentic. Fried rice was actually fried and had all the ingredients necessary. Too many places just give u yellow rice with little to no substance or flavor. I would order here again. read more

I wish May Jen would open up soon! I am missing them terribly! Their food is to die for as they are the best Chinese Restaurant in Western New York. Every time I come here to visit I am always drawn to them. Their shrimp fried rice is the best on the planet! read more

I've never eaten in, but it has become my go-to for take-out Chinese. Much better than the basic take-out place on the corner. The food is fresh and the fried food doesn't taste overly greasy like I've had at other places. read more

Wow how you have fallen May Jen. I used to eat here weekly but the last three times my food was terrible. Get back your old chef or find a better new chef. Your food hasn't been the same and until I hear its fixed I will just stay away. My Kanpo chicken was bland and not even slightly spicy. The veggie lomein was just wet slimy and void of any actual flavor. read more

Just ordered take-out from May Jen. Ordered the dinner combination General Tso's Chicken, & Garlic Chicken, and a side of Crab Rangoons. The dinner combinations came with choice of soup & egg roll. I must say, I'm sad that I haven't tried this place sooner! I've lived within 10 minutes from it my whole life and have always been curious but never tried it until today. After having multiple bad experiences from other less expensive take-out places, we finally decided that we'd give this place a try and while it is expensive the quality is superior and well worth the money. The combination platter was by far the best value and the wonton soup was one of the best I've ever had. Definitely worth the splurge! read more

I can't say how long my family has been going to May Jen for Chinese. Tangerine chicken used to be a main stay of my diet. Having broadened my horizons as an adult, it's still a good choice for Americanized Chinese food. Dumplings, spring rolls, mu shu, crispy beef, green beans, vegetable delight, General Tso's - it's all good. read more

I've been to my share of Chinese restaurants in Los Angeles and San Francisco. I didn't like May Jen at all. The food was incredibly unauthentic, and I wouldn't be surprised be the sauces were straight from the Lee Kum Kee jars (and used incorrectly). I pretty much knew the moment I walked in and saw all the tables with bowls of "won ton chips." The saddest thing is that May Jen was voted Buffalo's Best for Chinese food in 2006. Really? Come on now, people. I think this is the worst Chinese food I've ever had. read more

May Jen is fantastic because they have a hard working owner. I remember when they had the spot on Elmwood. The owners like a ph.d in neurology. She be peeling peas too. The food is great. Sometimes too much garlic. They have different chicken for different meals. It's not like those places that use one kind I chicken for all chicken meals. read more

After 20 years, I decided to give them another chance and ordered takeout. The combination appetizer for two was underwhelming - very small servings and terribly overpriced. I ordered everything not spicy, and said it several times, but the sesame noodles had red pepper flakes, lots of them. So did my dinner. If I had been eating in the restaurant, I would have sent it all back to the kitchen. read more

We had a takeout experience. We ordered sesame chicken, broccoli in garlic sauce, and egg rolls. It all taste fresh and the portions were a good size. I would recommend this fine establishment. read more

Got take out, more expensive than a normal Chinese take out, but definitely is worth the money. Twice cooked pork is incredible, very large tasty egg roles. I will be back soon read more

Attractive simple and clean decor. Affable and skilled staff. Above average execution of American/Chinese food. Lunch special fairly priced. read more

I love the food here, very tasty! Just sucks that every time I order take out they give you one packet of soy sauce like that's enough for the meal. read more

Had takeout from May Jen for the first time in years last week. I had Pepper Steak and my wife had the Moo Goo Guy Pan. We both were presently surprised on how good everthing tasted! Would definitely order it again. read more

Let me start by saying I USE to love May Jen however not so much recently. The last three times ordering from them have been HORRIBLE. 1. Go there to pick up food and arrived 5 min after I was told it would be ready(45 min pick up time)After taking 5 min to ask my order I ended up waiting another 35min, along with 4 other people that were waiting. The food was fresh but obvious it wasn't started until I arrived. No one bothered to update me after asking three times. The food however was delicious and well prepared! General tso, and sweet and sour chicken. After coming to the conclusion that every business has a bad night and for the most part the food is good we decided to order again. 2. Ordered the shrimp chow mein dinner to go and wow was it awful. The rice had been sitting and tasted like it was warmed in a microwave and the chow mein was a watery vegetable mess. No noodles. No flavor. Horrible. I decided to call in the hopes that maybe I was wrong about what the dish entailed. I spoke with the young lady who took my order and confirmed that it is suppose to come with noodles and I should have gotten them. Before I could say anything more I was hung up on. No sorry. No you can bring it back and we will fix it. Nothing. I now see why people have complained about their service when dealing with them. Being that there are so many Chinese restaurants in the buffalo area at much cheaper prices I can definitely say I will not be going back. read more

May Jen is just the same old Chinese you'll find anywhere else. It's ordinary. It used to be much better when I was younger, but don't come here and expect anything different than you can get at that Chinese place down the street. If you come in expecting anything more, you're going to be disappointed. read more

This restaurant is excellent. I have never eaten in such a pleasant and mellow atmosphere. The excellent service makes what would appear to be a cramped room into a vast field of deliciousness and delight. The chef prepares dishes the likes of which I could only imagine in the wettest dreams. The owners are saints and the portions are plentiful. If you happen to be a fan of perfection then I'd advise you to take a ride on the May Jen train. read more

this is in my opinion the best chinese food around. I do miss their old Elmwood Ave. location but the food here is just as fantastic. I love how everything tastes like it is fresh, some chinese restaurants have a sort of old food taste to their meat sometimes, especially chicken. This is not the case here. Food is delicious. read more

There are better options than this Chinese restaurant. I ordered the chicken lo mein and it was served cold to me. You can also tell that they do not use fresh ingredients since the chicken was STILL frozen when I ordered the chicken lo mein. There was only one waiter when my family and I dined there. You can tell that this restaurant was a mess. There were multiple tables that weren't cleaned up, but maybe thats because of the shortage of staff that this restaurant has... read more

Incredibly disappointed by this restaurant. According to many, this is one of the best Chinese food spots in town - the food I had was far from the best. Honestly, my husband and I agree that it is the worst we've consumed. Just flavorless and poorly executed, period. By the way, I ordered the ginger garlic chicken and hubby had sesame chicken. The only palatable item in the meal was the eggroll. read more

Got a take out from here and it was very good. I got the combo where the entree comes with fried rice and an egg roll. Portion was big and food was good. The owners were very nice when I went into pick up. They even gave me a college student discount which is awesome. read more

May Jen serves basic Chinese food you could find at any cheaper local Chinese eatery, just dressed up in the pretty package of higher prices and the experience of sit-down restaurant service. The building is cute from the outside but the interior décor is a little strange, I think I would call it 80s height-of-luxury? I felt like the food was tasty and the pace of service was good but that everything was overpriced and there were just no fancy or special menu items that justify the cost and attempt at an "elegant" sit down dinner. Definitely good for a date night if you're just craving Chinese, but save your money and go to China Maxx or Tin-Tin for hangover takeout. read more

This is really a hidden gem. The exterior is bland and unassuming, but the interior is clean and nicely decorated. The food is very good, as is the service. The house specialty, Garlic Ginger Chicken, is excellent. Items may appear pricey at first, but it is because they are served family style (an $18 Garlic Ginger Chicken order can easily feed two people by itself, for example). There are single-person "combination dinners" which offer choice of entree with fried rice, egg roll, and choice of soup. every one in my party really enjoyed what they had, with accolades for every kind of soup. read more

Started off with the veggie spring rolls which were fresh and delicious. The peanut sauce that comes with them is addicting. Then, I shared two dishes with a friend including vegetable lo mein and Buddha's delight. I preferred the lo mein because it had more flavor and the tofu in Buddha's delight was pretty mushy and not cooked as well as I would have liked. Maybe a bit on the pricey side for Chinese take-out, but I could say that about a lot of restaurants in Buffalo. read more

Only one waiter on duty. Waited for ever to be served. Appetizers didn't come for 30 min. We cancelled them. Owner comes out and say's we have to hand roll the summer rolls that's why it's taking a long time. No apology. Main course was descent but service and attitude sucks. Never going back. read more

I was there with an old friend. The food here is alright, its basic American Chinese food, and some real chinese food. We got chips which were a bit oily. They use white meat which is nice. The fried rice was a bit dry. The menu is really confusing, the appetizers are in the 3rd page somewhere, usually its the first page. There is a random slip paper of house specials. Too expensive, who would pay 18$ for black pepper beef or chicken?? The soups are okay, too salty and generic. Nothing to wow about. The setting of the restaurant is outdated. Looks like a grandma styled it, white table cloths, place mats?? and spoon and fork on each table? That is the first time I have ever seen that at a chinese restaurant or any restaurant. Then the waiter who was really sweet, (i thought the waiters would be Asian) was just running back and forth, they don't seem to have proper materials for waiters? random pens, no apron, or using hands to hold plates and what not, no trays to carry anything. I keep an eye on details..and being that I have experience in waiting tables. The owner seems a bit grumpy, an elder lady. The place is too small, little to no parking space.. Then inside the tables are too small, the waitress could barely put two dishes that were put on a silver plate holder. I think this restaurant is missing some essential necessities in running a restaurant. It is not anything special, its just so generic. I am surprised its been open for so 30 years?? from what I read on the website. I guess for people from Buffalo its great, but I am from New York and this is just an odd restaurant. read more
