What a huge and welcoming restaurant and bar in Maxwell! You can see the sign off of highway 5 and I went for it! I ordered the prime rib sandwich with garlic fries. The meat was overflowing and the garlic fries were sooo good! Love the 2 kinds of horseradish and the dipping sauce. Now I have some good leftovers! It's a relaxing place with a full bar and plenty of tvs. They also have Sunday brunch. Who would know this place was so good! Worth the stop off of highway 5! Stopped by to celebrate with dinner. I didn't make any reservations but they were able to accommodate my party and I. We enjoyed the history and all the decorations on the walls and inside of the restaurant/building. Also, the big flat screen tv's hung up would be great for watching sports. Don't let the outside of the building deceive you. The inside of the place is very well done and clean. The bartender/waitress was very nice and attentive. My BLTA was perfectly done and my husband's bacon cheeseburger with a fried egg was excellent. We traveled from willows to try there pizza and we were so glad we did! We had pepperoni, garlic and jalapeno. Pizza was bomb! The garlic was fresh and cooked perfectly! We were traveling from Vallejo to Chico and spent more than an hour "Yelping" to find a decent place to eat. Ended up at The Maxwell Inn Bar & Grill. Great choice. Food was a little pricey BUT everything is more expensive today AND with slim pickin's a good place can charge more. I had fish and chips. I got one piece of fish but it was very big and very crunchy without being greasy. I don't care for beer battered fish because there are pockets that absorb the grease. This was probably the best tasting and best prepared fish I have had. This is a really unassuming place filled with locals, good service and great food. Will definately come back when traveling through Maxwell. PS I ate too fast to take pics. ‍ read more

My Cousin and I stopped in here on our RV trip back home absolutely phenomenal place. Huge restaurant, air-conditioned, very friendly staff, full bar, and I ordered the bacon lettuce tomato and avocado on sourdough. Caesar salad on the side comes with it. My Cousin ordered the quesadilla. We thoroughly enjoyed the country western music, the owner was here she was delightful to speak with. I will definitely recommend this five stars. Really great Bar & Grill atmosphere with Dining options in a dining room. History in Dining room is like a museum! Lots of Amazing animal mounts in the bar area with 7 or 8 Big Screens with different games going. Shuffleboard table. Food is typical Grill and good. Very kid friendly for families. Waitress program is confusing to diner because they haven't worked out the kinks of a small town yet. People here walk in & join a table for a drink only or set down & eat with people already in process. Not typical in a city so owners might be struggling with how to handle this. The Maxwell Inn recently reopened with an all new menu. I had the chicken pesto pizza two days in a row because it was SOOO good. They also have delicious Sandwiches, burgers, steaks and garlic fries! On Thursdays, they offer lunch delivery service to Colusa. read more

We were so happy when we heard that the Maxwell Inn had reopened. We went there for our Anniversary on Saturday, Feb. 15, 2020 and were so glad we did. We had the best and biggest Rib Eye Stakes we have every had. They were so good I almost swooned with the first bite, cooked to perfection Med. Rare and so juicy and tender. We also loved the loaded baked potatoes and fresh green beans. The service was so on top of things and friendly. Couldn't ask for a better dinner experience. Thank you Maxwell in for making our 33rd anniversary a special night. read more

Oh my goodness, it looked horrible and tasted even worse - I was truly unable to eat it. The waitress ended up taking this item off our bill. I don't know if it's even fair to leave a review if you didn't end up eating there, but hear me out. Saw pretty good reviews for the food and service, so we stopped. I have never experienced worse service in such a short period of time in my life. I've worked in a restaurant, and retail, and you are always supposed to acknowledge the people when they walk in. Even if you can't seat them immediately, it's common courtesy to acknowledge their arrival and let them know you'll be right with them. My boyfriend and I stood awkwardly for a couple minutes at the front door. The bartender saw us, but she was serving two gentleman at the bar. And there were 2 or 3 other occupied tables, the place was quiet and we didn't see any servers. After a few minutes we walked to the other side of the restaurant to see if maybe we were at the wrong waiting area. Sill no one for a several minutes. I walked back to the front to ask the bartender, only then does she ask as she walks by me to deliver drinks to one of the tables, "Table for 2?" And I said, "yes please, can we just sit anywhere?" She scoffs, literally makes a sound of disgust, and says, "just hold on" and she disappears. A few minutes pass, so we walk out. I've never walked out of place. But I could not have imagined paying money to a place with service like that, no matter how good the food was. So sorry we didn't get to experience the food. But that was a disastrous first experience at this place. read more

This restaurant is not for the faint of heart. The whole place is decorated with hunted game that has been stuffed and mounted for your viewing pleasure. It's a veritable museum of sporting game from bears to elk to moose to turkeys to pheasants and the occassional bobcat. The restaurant is relatively fancy-dancy and there's a lounge/bar area off from the main restaurant. If you ever wanted to be sure that your meat was going to be cooked to perfection, this is the place to go. The chef knows what he (or she) is doing when it comes to cooking delicious meat the way it ought to be cooked. The steaks, the duck, the chicken: all good. I've only eaten here in weeknights so the crowd is minimal and the service is attentive. But the food was always good. It's very close to I-5 so if you're driving through around dinner time, stop by and you'll get a meal to remember. And you can tell your friends about the hunting motif... and that turkeys are freaking huge birds especially when their plumage is fanned out. Huge! read more

I've been duck hunting in the Willows area for over 20 years. Searching for a decent place to dine can be a challenge if you don't want to drive far. A buddy of mine from the area suggested that I try out the re-opened Maxwell Inn....so I did. What a pleasant surprise. From the time we were greeted until the time we left, every staff member was personal, charming, delightful and on top of every detail. Needless to say, the service was exceptional. Everyone coming in to dine seemed to know everyone....all of the locals know each other. The cocktail was 1/2. The price of anything served in the Bay Area....and perfect in every way. The meal was all-inclusive - Bread, homemade soup of the day, crisp and chilled salad perfectly dressed, main course and ice cream for dessert. Their menu includes seafood, beef, lamb, poultry and more. My son had a full grilled rack of lamb cooked perfectly medium rare. I enjoyed a 16 oz. ribeye cooked perfectly medium rare. Both entrees came with a choice of 2 sides. We thoroughly enjoyed ourselves and felt right at home. Needless to say....we will be back and often. read more

This is our second visit to the Maxwell Inn at Maxwell, CA. We go this time of year when the place is all decorated for Christmas and it is gorgeous! Everyone is so cheerful and friendly! The food is wonderful, can't go wrong with their rib steak! uumm delicious! Great wine selection, great atmosphere! We have to drive an hour to get here, but well worth the drive. It actually a pretty good place. I ordered the chop salad and it was huge and very tasty although a bit pricey. I love the garlic bread. I ate lunch there on my way up to Mt. Shasta and then upon my return stopped in for a beer (Alaskan Amber) with an order of garlic bread...overall it is pricey but the stuffed buffalo and his friends are priceless. read more

If I could mark zero stars I would!! On a family road trip to Oregon, thought we would try this place out. Interesting decor ( def not good for any vegetarians)...but when my brother and I got served a completely RAW chicken sandwich everything went downhill. Now sitting queasy in the back seat... This review is based on getting pizza to go...The pizza from this place is really good. It is priced really nicely compared to the prices at Granzellas or StrawHat. If you are some sort of vegan peta loving hipster prepare to pass out when you walk in. LoL. Lots of Taxidermy up on the walls of this joint. Pretty cool. Hidden gem! Midway from SF to Sun river, this Kitschy spot in the middle Maxwell was a treat for the eyes and the stomach. You walk into a wonderland of taxidermy, including a gigantic polar bear and feel like you are being served in a friends living room. The locals are quick to make you feel wanted and quick to give you the inside edition on the town and its vibrant cast of characters. The town is deserted but this bar and restaurant are alive and well. The kids were delighted with the interior landscape and the dinner time entertainment of the singing dear head on the wall took this review from a 4.5 to 5.0. They make delicious drinks. My daughter felt it was the best Roy Rodgers she has ever had. Prime rib was juicy and cooked to perfection. Don't miss this place!!!! read more

It has been about a year since I have been here and I went last evening, I was disappointed. I went specifically for the French onion soup. In the past, it was served with cheese bubbling all over the top and spilling down the sides. Last night there was a small amount of cheese in the center of the soup crock. The broth did not have much taste. The onions were cut in large pieces. The crouton, even after soaking in the soup, was so tough I had trouble cutting it with a steak knife. I also ordered steamed clams. The clams on top were dried out, the broth on the bottom was blackish grey. I don't think the clams were scrubbed very well. I am not in any hurry to go back. read more

Probably the best restaurant in the most out of the way place in Northern California. Just off highway 5 between Willows and Williams. Extensive menu ranging from Caesar salad to steaks. Local specials including buffalo and very good clam chowder. At least half the experience is the museum of taxidermy wild life. Prices affordable on all items with good service, white table cloths on all tables. A hidden gem, so well hidden that it is often relatively uncrowded except on weekends and during hunting season. This is my first critique of a restaurant ever. I have frequented the Maxwell Inn for about 15 years, though I live 125 miles away. The food has always been very good. But there is a gem. Though I have been to many seafood places, I have never Had better clam chowder, even in the best establishments of Monterey or SF. The Chowder is to die for! I have made many batches, been at Chowder cook -off's, but none as good as Maxwell! Have been there twice. The first time was 4 stars, this last time maybe 1 star. The wife has had the buffalo burger both times, says both were excellent. The first time there I had their standard burger - it was B+ or so. The onion rigns are $4.50 - basically over priced. This last time, I had first ordered the Rosemary Turkey sandwich. About the time I was expecting to be served, the waitress (white hair, long pony tail) came back saying it wasn't available. Fine, I'm flexible. They had out front a whiteboard listing 3 specials of the day. I ordered the prime rib sandwich from that list. 10 minutes later she came back saying that again it wasn't available. Not happy, ie, if it's not available, erase it from the whiteboard. I asked than to see the menu again. 5 minutes later it arrived. At this point we'd been there 20-25 minutes. I ordered the patty melt. 10 minutes later it arrived. I think I'd have been better off at JackInTheBox and their's. Anyway, finished eating. Had to sit around again for a bill. All said and done we spent just over an hour having a so so lunch. Maybe it was a bad day, but there are too many fine places to eat in the area - will find somewhere else next time. read more
