3.5 stars, rounding up due to the nice service and value.
Came here for Taste of Hartford when I was here visiting my bf for the weekend. Unlike NYC's Restaurant Week at $35 pp, Hartford offers its better places for a 3 course dinner at $20.11 per person. After eating at Dish the night before, we wanted to try Trumbull Kitchen as a means of comparison because their Taste of Hartford menu actually had a lot of options on it (Firebox's did not, and Max Downtown was closed for a private event). They're known as a New American place with an "Asian Flare"... I didn't get much of that from their pre fixe special menu, but it seems they're regular menu had spicy tuna rolls on it... and other miscellaneous Asian items. It's more cas here than it is at Dish... you can get burgers and whatnot starting at $12 whereas things at Dish started at $25 and up. Though, the entrees entrees here are pretty much $18-25 and more.
We made a reservation about 3-4 hours before we had dinner here at 8 on a Sunday so we didn't have the best seating. Got seated near the door and its chilly winter weather draft! Booness. Oh well- the waitress was super nice and overall we had great service. She was sweet, and didn't mind all we ordered just water.... she forgot what our desserts were but I mean you can't expect service to be that attentive/formal when you get out of NYC.
So for the Taste of Hartford, my bf's lineup was: 1) the shaved brussels sprouts salad , 2) grilled BBQ chili pork rubbed tenderloin with basmati rice and green squash, 2) caramelized apples a la mode. The salad was the BOMB. Probably the best part of his meal- tossed with an amazing balsamic, almonds and of course the wonderful flavor of pecorino- you can just forget the nasty bitter brussels sprouts reputation (they were cut up anyway). Everything was chopped to perfection (almost like a a slaw) and the texture remained crunchy, due to the the almonds plus the dressing not drowning the leaves out- hands down one of the better salads I've tried in a long while. The pork was pretty good too- I liked the bit that I tried and I don't even eat pork. It was really tender and had a great barbecue tang to it. My bf didn't like it as much as the pork he had the night before, at Dish, as he said the rub wasn't as well seasoned. *shrug*. I thought it was good. The basmati rice had a nice pineapple flavor to it but the squash was unmemorable.
As for me, I got the: 1) gumbo (love this New Orleans staple.. as my folks lived down there for some time), 2) The Coq Au Vin Blanc (made with Murray's Chicken, which was popping up on menus everywhere during Hartford Restaurant Week- it's just pounded chicken breast, lightly pan fried), 3) the vanilla semi freddo with pineapple compote. My gumbo was great- it was different than my Mom's- it had more of strong andouille sausage (meaty) flavor- and was actually spicy (well mildly spicy). It was more of a soup, sprinkled with a bit of precooked rice at the end (I make it with the rice), and lots of beans and okra (which actually tastes good a little mushy). The gumbo was good. Can't say I was as much of a fan for the Coq Au Vin- which wasn't really Coq Au Vin at all. More like chicken breast in white wine sauce with mashed potatoes , as Coq Au Vin is usually made with rooster and if chicken, dark meat (like a thigh). This Murray's Chicken breast was a bit dry and overcooked- you could tell because when you cut into the chicken, it was hard. The mashed potatoes were fine- can't really fuck that up. It was very blended and not at all chunky. The white wine sauce was good but could had been flavored with a BIT more wine, and there were also pancetta pieces. I'm a fan but the pieces were few and far in between- 2-3 chunks sprinkled in the white wine sauce; I'd like to have seen more.
Portions were big- as of course this isn't NYC. I left desserts for the end as this was the most disappointing course for the both of us. My bf's caramelized applies a la mode had bad apples to ice cream ratio- as in not enough ice cream. The crumble pieces spread throughout where a big too hard, sugary and too big for my taste- though my bf didn't mind this. The biggest let-down for him was the fact that the apples were not warm/hot- they were room temperature and a little cold. Booness. I didn't know what to make of my semi freddo except that it was a little nauseating. It was nice really sweet ice cream, not cream, and kind of in this weird semi frozen state in triangle shapes, not nearly creamy enough. The outer shell tasted frozen- like you could taste the ice and not fresh. There was sporadic pieces of pineapple strewn about. Overall the dessert was too much of the same, with a weird un-fresh texture/flavor, and didn't deliver.
Between the Taste of Hartford here vs. Dish - we both agreed Dish was the clear winner. If you come here for the regular menu, we spotted a lot of people getting the meatloaf, fyi. read more
