I've been here for happy hour a handful of times, tonight included, and they have awesome happy hour tapas menu (which has always been a priority of mine since studying abroad in Spain). You can't beat the prices- $1.99 to $4.99 (and $4.99 has been the exception, not the norm), and there's such a creative variety of small bites that you just want to try everything (and can, since it's so affordable to do so)!
I want to say the menu changes weekly (but don't quote me on that), and they have one happy hour specialty cocktail for $5 (cocktails are generally in the $9 to $12 range), $5 glasses of red and white wine (happy hour selection), and $4 happy hour beer. The $5 cocktail can be hit or miss- I'm not a fan of grape flavored vodka so I wasn't fond of that one the first time I came here, but I've liked them otherwise, and that's such a good deal. Tonight was the "Irish Storm" (Jameson and ginger beer)- loved it.
For small plates, I got the Patata Taco (a soft tortilla filled with potatoes, lime chipotle vinaigrette, jicama, sliced avocado, and lettuce) and the Carmelized Pork Belly with Cider Jam. The Patata Taco was pleasantly unique, and yet such a comfort food at the same time because of the potatoes- warm and satisfyingly full of flavor. Wish I had gotten two- it looked big when it arrived but it was by no means overstuffed (and that's fine- it was still more than worth the $1.99 cost). The Carmelized Pork Belly was so tenderly cooked and delicious and paired splendidly with the Cider Jam. I wish I'd've had more time to stick around and try more- they had a St. Patty's Day special that sounded intriguing ("Irish" Spring Roll- corned beef, potato, and Thousand Island dip), but I had to run out to catch a forum at the Bushnell. But I'm not too concerned with missing out- they always have such good options and I suppose I can't possibly try everything...
Currently, the happy hour menu is available from 4 to 7 Monday through Friday, 10 to 11 Monday through Wednesday, and 11 to 12 Thursday and Friday (PM, in case that's not intuitive). The bar was VERY crowded and usually is, I had to stand for a while but luckily snagged a chair right before my taco came (not sure how I would have eaten that standing up).
There are parking lots close by, as well as a couple of parking garages, but I'd recommend the metered parking along the street if you can get it- much less expensive. They'll validate parking for the garages but it's not for the full amount.
This has mostly been about happy hour. I will say the most recent time I came for dinner during Taste of Hartford in January, we made an Open Table reservation for 6PM, our party of 4 were all present by 5:45, and our table wasn't available until 6:45. Now, I'll be honest- I had a few happy hour drinks at the bar and I was completely engrossed in enjoying the company of my three friends, so I could have cared less, but my friends weren't all that thrilled and I'm not sure how something like that happens. However, the staff were so apologetic and ended up buying us a round of drinks while we were waiting, so I personally felt like they more than made up for it.
I'm so happy I work in Hartford. This is definitely among my top choices of places to come after work. read more
