Weird lack of customer service when we first got there - and this wasn't the first time. This isn't our neighborhood bar of choice because the workers aren't very friendly, to us, at least. It was early during Happy Hour and we found a couple seats at the mostly full bar. The rest of the space was empty. We had to search for a Happy Hour menu ourselves. We got a Margarita, a beer, the cheeseburger, and the loaded fries. The Margarita came first. It was the clearest Margarita I'd ever seen, but it tasted okay. The beer was good and the food was decent. Not anything extraordinary, but good. The bar could use a scrub. The three bartenders eventually talked to us. We opened up the conversation first, but there are definitely friendlier places nearby! read more

120 beers on tap... uh yea, they had my attention! Being that I'm a beer head and it was my first time in Baltimore, I had found this place about a month before and I even had someone else suggest Max's. We got here around 1pm and had tickets for a 4pm game at Camden Yards, so we had plenty of time to spare. As soon as you walk into the vestibule, the first thing I noticed was a wall if retired tap handles, which was a sign of a great craft beer bar. Plus, across the street they have this cool looking trailer type thing with Taps on it; I've never seen anything like it and I'm not sure if it's functional, but it looks cool as hell!! I noticed there was a cool poshy looking secondary bar in the back, but it was closed. I'm guessing that the reserve it for events and/or when it gets really busy. I'm guessing it was a little busy, because it was game day, but we still managed to find a seat. It took me a couple of minutes to realize that there was a sign printed on the table to order food from the bar, so no wait service. The bar tenders were cool as hell and really new their isht about beer, I've been on this sour beer kick and she knew the perfect beer for me. (Baccus by Van Honsebrouck, it was Dark, Sour, and yummy). After I ordered the food the bar tender asked where I was sitting so the food could be delivered to our table. When our food arrived it was brought over by the bar tenders, I kind of felt bad that they have to double as servers, it doesn't seem very efficient. I saw twelve to fifteen vacant tap handles, plus the unused bar in the back, so it's not really 120 beers on tap. Even though all taps weren't in use, there was still a great selection of beer. From the second I walked up to the door, the air of Max's was riddled with arrogance. After letting a few people walk in before me, the bouncer stops me and asks for ID. Now it wasn't the fact that he asked me for the ID; it was the way he asked for it. Definitely a dude on a power-trip; sorry buddy, I'm actually 22 and could be a paying patron. Chill out okay? Next I step inside. A small souvenir corner is to the left, the bar is to the right, and if you go up a small ramp to the front of you, there's one of many seating areas. I did a quick lap of the place and between the crowd and overall atmosphere found it undesirable, so I left rather quickly. They have a pool table in the back which was pretty cool. But I wouldn't drink here even if I lost a round of pool. read more

Ugh. Ok...this bar is amazing...but didn't get to even look at the menu. We had our 8 year old, it was 4:30 on a Wednesday. And they turned us away due to our kiddo. Look...I'm from the south yes. Crazy busy place!! Football + Max's 3rd annual Oktoberfest celebration = crowds, noise and general chaos. We managed to snag seats - not sure how that happened - and started asking questions of the 'kids' next to us (OK, so they were in their 20s). $3 sample mugs were pretty much small pints, but well worth the price when some of the beers were $7.50 (I know this because Ken forget to say 'sample' once and came back with a $7.50 pint (thank God it was good). Huge selection of beers. Huge! I think they say 100 on tap, but I know it was more because of the huge selection for Oktoberfest. And all were tasty. Bartenders were nice to us tourists and ran an accurate tab for us despite the mayhem. Ken loved it. I had a good time too (because I didn't even think to whine until we were way into the second set of afternoon games). Fun for drinking and people watching. It wouldn't be affordable to keep this much beer on hand for a town like Baltimore, so I assume that many of these beers are going to be served at older than optimal age. The staff certainly think a lot about themselves, the one or two I dealt with were OK, but the level of service could have been better and they could have dressed more professionally. I have a hard time going to a bar where the bartenders wear t-shirts. Have some dignity and at least wear a collared shirt! The music was so loud that people could barely talk to each other. Max's has great energy. It's a large space with a lot of beer. Beers from around the world, and the country are to be enjoyed at Max's. They operate on English Pub service, if you sit at a table, you must come to the bar to order anything. I was there on a late Friday night. There was ample security and the bar was staffed well. I did not have to wait to be served a beverage. We had a group of about eight people, and we were able to be a large high top table. The noise level was average, I was able to have conversation and not have to raise my speaking level. The crowd was a good cross section of America, but definitely the age median was younger than 35. All that being said, if you are looking for beer selection in Fells Point, Baltimore, put Max's on the list. They have some pretty cool t-shirts for sale too. Wow what a bar, aptly named the land of beer with what seems like over 40 beers on tap. With so many choices you are sure to find your favorites, local crafts and seasonal ones. They have a large open space with full bar including a lot of tables and places to stand. The second side has more high tops and space. Evidently they karaoke some nights that is a big drawl. Max's is a place for those who love,a nd I mean really LOVE beer (and sports if you are into that too!) Located just a block or so from the water in Fell's Point, it is hard to miss the corner 2-story building sitting across from Birtha's. We have been stopping in from time to time as it can be very crowded depending on what sport (and team) is playing. Be warned!!! it can get very, very very loud in the main room on the main floor. Being a big room it seats many and the sound just builds. When you are in it and it develops around you, you are less likely to notice but if you walk in from the quiet street it can be quite a change. There are 2 sets of 2 levels of taps ("impressive", Vader-style) along the extremely long, wooden bar that is situated on the right as you walk in. There is a separate room in the back with much smaller bar but it is not always open. If it is, it is much quieter than the main room and is a great alternative when you are not into watching the game or competing with the din from the very large first room. The staff is on point with very capable bartenders who KNOW their beer, without hesitation. If you go in with a preferred flavor or favorite brand in mind, please do to let them know and they will steer you straight. This process has worked for me EVERY time. All I have to say is "unfiltered IPA" and BAM! -they hand me something very ,ery close to what I was looking for, craving for. No matter how busy it has been (and this example was tested during the 2017 NFL playoff games) you will not be waiting long and they will handle your order quickly and accurately. The tap list is always rotating so you may not find what you had just a few days before BUT you will have many other delicious substitutes to try regardless of the style of beer you are craving that day, from sours to browns, to IPAs ( oh yeah (Koolaid-style!) You can get 5oz pours, a pint or what looks like an Oktoberfest sized mug which can be daunting with daily offerings of some beers with 2-digit percentages of alcohol content. As far as food is concerned, they do have a solid list though we have tried very little. Sadly, they no longer have the Nathans style long chili hotdogs that they offered a few years ago. However, the guacamole we had was fresh and went well with the chips that came with it. The fries were crispy, not overcooked and solid as well. We will need to snack there more to have more data on the rest of their menu... Or maybe I just need ANY excuse to go back :) read more

It was a Tuesday afternoon and the service and staff were super friendly. Samples were provided, beer tasted great, and even a couple of lines for cask conditioned ale. Downsides: the beer is slightly pricier than it should be, perhaps because of the Fells Point location. The place is "Pub Service", which means you can only order through the bar, no waiters to take order or deliver drinks, but they deliver food already ordered though the bartender. This means getting a bar spot is critical for enjoyment, otherwise you spend much time trying to elbow up to the bar. Parking is very slim to none, mostly none. read more

They also have adjunct lagers for the less adventurous presumably mostly college crowd. Our bartender was super knowledgeable about beer. We talked to him for a while about the different beers we've tried. He had us split two rare beers we'd never heard of for free. He brought us water without us asking to cleanse our pallets. I ordered the new Game of Thones beer, Blood and Fire and said it wasn't very good. He also agreed with me that only the first GOT beer was any good and these beers only sell because they're A. Ommegang and B. Game of Thrones. It's not often you get to speak with such a knowledgeable craft beer connoisseur as bartender. He even apologized for the price of one of our beers. I wish people in New York would feel bad about charging $7.75 for a fantastic imported IPA. We conversed with another guy we met at the bar and even he hooked us up with some sour stout that was absolutely delicious. Just had the drinks, and I was impressed. They have a MASSIVE beer list, with about 40 on tap that night, and countless more in bottles/cans. In addition to the standard pints and 12 oz glasses, they offer very reasonably priced 5 oz glasses as well, if you want to sample. I had a Heavy Seas Blackbeard's Breakfast, an imperial porter aged in bourbon barrels and brewed with coffee. Great flavor, very happy to find a new favorite. It is a very large space, thankfully, as it gets crowded. It's more on the brightly lit dive side in terms of decor, but the bar is long, and the entire place has tons of seating. This is a quick review as I did not get spend as much time here as I would have liked. I wanted to fall in love as soon as I saw all the taps. Amazing. There is a front room and a back room. The front will fill up quickly. The back room stays emptier for longer but you have less of a selection to choose from. However, there were more local brews to choose from in the back. Max's Taphouse is often mentioned as one of Baltimore's best sport's bars, and it was extremely popular on this NFL Sunday in Fell's Point, bar central in Baltimore. The NFL Sunday ticket is presented at Max's, and dozens of televisions had an assortment of games on. I grabbed a stool in front of my Packer game and settled in for an afternoon of football. The noise rose to a crescendo as game time approached, and sport's fans filled every conceivable space at Max's. I was glad I procured a seat an hour before game time. Service was remarkable. The true athletes were tending bar and I will never know how they kept all the "running tab" credit cards straight. Max's is a beer bar in addition to being a sport's bar, and they seemed to have an amazing array of beers available. I am not a beer drinker. So, my cocktails were uninspiring. The food sounded better than it tasted and the stools were very uncomfortable. Yet, for NFL games, Max's Taphouse is the place to be. ADDENDUM: If you get a chance, sit next to the New Orleans Saints fan who talked non stop for three hours. This is probably one of my favorite places on the face of the earth. Every time my boyfriend and I are in Baltimore, we go here. I'm not a beer drinker as I have full blown celiacs but my boyfriend is next level beer nerd. I stick to the brown liquor variety and most places with this good of beer selection lacks liquor variety. Boy oh man, that is definitely not one of those places! And the prices are well fair unlike a lot of places in rva. 15 for whistle pig old world is soooo reasonable. We get to enjoy two of our favorite things together in harmony. Beer list fantastic. Let you try a bunch of beers before selecting but get uptight if there's a line so have your orders ready. Prices a bit higher but worth it as these are rarer beers so $8 not too bad for a great place to go out and have a good time in lower Baltimore. Parking impossible but Uber easy in the city. Have food to order at the bar but beer is the main reason to come here. Huge spot and extremely loud. Lots of TVs and a sports bar through and through. A bit dirty but tons of space and again great beer so well worth the visit to Baltimore just to come to Max's. read more
