This establishment offered a promo for thanksgiving. My wife called yesterday, Tuesday, so we can order early. The lady on the other line said to call the next day around noon. When she did today, they said they cannot guarantee to provide the order and they're busy with a lot of calls. This is thanksgiving dinner we're talking about. Was in the Pasadena/Glendale area while having a craving for Filippo food and thought about "Max of Manila" not having been in like 20yrs?! My parents loved Max's which is how I learned about them. The restaurant's interior is very well lit with lots tables and a few booths. Ordered Lumpia Shanghai-it was good crispy: the crispy bowl was a nice touch. Lechon Kawali-this was truly delicious, tender meat with crisply skin. It was served with sweet sauce...I maybe remembering it wrong but I thought this was served with a vinegar-soy-garlic sauce. Halo Halo- was so special in my youth. This version will not stay in my memory as it was just okay, my biggest complaint was the ice, which were the size of rice, as opposed to flaky, shave ice consistency that melts in your mouth. The halo halo in the PI is like that...this version a pale rendition. And that's where the good comments end for me. Ultimately, I was truly disappointed in my visit and here are the specifics 1) I don't know when it changed, because when I was growing up "Max of Manila" was a premium restaurant. While the restaurant looks clean...it doesn't feel premium. Not any more premium than a "cracker barrel" or "Olive Garden" 2) No Filippo iconography!? no pictures of men and and women dancing, rice fields, no Filipino flag?! Is this a Filipino restaurant or not? Anything resembling Filippo culture has been sanitized from this restaurant. 3) Valet only parking ? Really it's not a fancy restaurant(anymore)...why bother? it would be like an Olive Garden requiring valet...silly 4) the ala carte nature of their menu which is fine if you get a lot. The fact that rice (as an example) isn't included is annoying...particularly for a non-premium restaurant 5) the service was not good only got a refill of water at the end of my dinner...despite the server checking in a couple of times...clearly you have to ask, yet another example of the restaurant being non-premium...they might as well install a self serve drink dispenser. When I realized they were not called " Max of Manila" I should have stopped....this place has changed and not for the better. I guess it's someone's idea of Filipino food like Olive Garden is "Italian" or Chipotle is "Mexican". The food is the star here, you will get good food, that's at least something and is the ONLY reason I'm giving the restaurant a 3 stars...everything else is like a 1 star. First of all, I'd like to point out that the place looks clean and neat and not really loud, which is nice. However, the customer service needs some improvements; the receptionists from the front didn't greet us or even try to welcome us (1 is young lady and other is older lady w/short hair). 2nd, they didn't even smile, and their faces were like emotionless, and when they smile and laugh, it's only when they chit chat w/ each other. For the food and drinks, we liked the halo halo special, and as for the miki bihon, we liked the noodles, the meats, just not the shrimp. For the garlic fried rice, this is just misleading food name. The name of this food should have been fried garlic over rice/steam rice. When you put "fried rice" together, you would expect a fried rice w/ garlic instead of fried garlic w/ steamed rice. The fries that were served together w/ the chicken were cold from the start, so we couldn't finish them. The glass of water I got was dirty and not thoroughly cleaned, but that was not serious to the point that I have to bother the waiter to change it. The chicken that we had is fine, not bad but also not what we expected. One last thing, we were ignored several times when we tried to order and get the bill, which is also very bad customer service. There was only one server that paid attention to us, and this is what we assumed since his name is on our receipt, Ramir. There was another male server (not the bald guy), who was really helpful. Overall, we liked the place, but for its customer service, which is extremely important since it is our first impression of this place. The foods and desert were good, except for the shrimp and the fries. My 2nd best Filipino Restaurant in LA :) The location is definitely accommodating and makes you feel at home. The customer service is definitely good, though the food might take a little while before its serve because most of the order is made to order. Parking is not a problem because they all the space plus they offer valet service. I highly recommend this place. But if you were to ask me to rate the QUANTITY of their meal, i'd give this restaurant a 2-star. This review is for the food truck, that sells to-go items from the bigger menu at Max's restaurant in Glendale. This day, they were situated near the Long Beach City Hall, during the Long Beach Filipino American History Month Celebration that happened on the plaza. We had initially planned to eat it close by, but decided instead to take it home. I had some notions already about Max: my only experience had been to take my daughter to the main restaurant in Glendale, a little bit after we moved to Los Angeles about 5 years ago. Max had popped up in my research as the best representation of Filipino food, so we drove all the way from Santa Monica just to go there. We left extremely let down: 1) the service level we received was 'our food will speak for itself so I just have to do the bare minimum' 2) they served us inedible (dry and withered) pieces of lechon that anybody looking at it should have stopped being served 3) angry at myself for not bringing it up about it. Since then, we have discovered far superior Filipino food and service all over metro LA, and haven't bothered going back to Max's (or recommending it to anyone). So when I saw this truck, I was going to skip it, especially since the price for one item was close to $20, a high amount for a food truck. But it ended up being the only option and they were kind enough to come all the way from Glendale to help celebrate this important month. So we ordered the fried chicken, and it was very good. It was a whole, smaller chicken, that had been brined and deep fried. The skin was delectable: crispy buy also very airy....not greasy in any way. The meat (even the breast meat) was very moist and the brine had penetrated everywhere. And the portion ended up being more than enough for the two of us, with a little left over. We ended up eating it with jasmine rice and some homemade atchara...and it was just delicious and satisfying. It came with banana ketchup which neither of us like, but it didn't need it...though I wondered how it would taste with some of the unique Korean chicken sauces that are so popular now. Of course I had to try Max's! I brought my nephew and daughters to eat here a couple months ago. We drove about an hour to try is highly recommended Filipino restaurant. I ordered the kare-kare, the Shanghai lumpia, the bistek, Chicharrón, garlic rice, halo-halo, mango dessert, and flan. Let's start with the Kare-kare, which is my favorite Filipino dish. I enjoyed the flavor of the sauce and vegetables. The meat was a bit chewy and I was thrown off by the tripe in it. I've never had this dish with tripe. The garlic rice, of course was amazing with the bits of fried garlic sprinkled on top. The Chicharrón with crispy and delicious. The bistek was not a hitter for us. The meat was too chewy and didn't have that traditional taste. I also made a mistake by not eating the fried chicken. I would visit again to try the fried chicken. Went yesterday with friends and we were all disappointed with almost all the food we ordered. Iced tea was really bland. Watered down to the point where we started questioning whether it was water with a drop of food coloring to make it dark. Pork sisig was more like diced onion sisig with a little bit of fatty pork topped with green onions. Not sure what cut it was but it was the worst sisig I've ever had! Flavor was non-existent and my friend said it tasted spoiled also! Not sure if that was due to all the onions they put in there but I only had two bites and gave up. Crispy pata was okay. Crispy on the outside, but the inside was almost hollow/slimy fat with tough meat. Other mom and pop restaurants make it way better! Whole fried chicken- friends said it was okay. Did not bother having any as it was too small to share between 4 people. Chicharon bulaklak was actually good. I don't know how that can get messed up though. Pinakbet was alright. Again, other places make it better and flavorful. Halo-halo was good and had a lot of of toppings. Tasted like halo-halo. Would any of us ever go back? Most likely not. I've been here a handful of times but it's been years since I've been and my bf has never eaten here before! We're almost always at the Galleria Mall/Americana but I didn't realize how this spot was literally right next door. We decided to grab dinner here with my mom and aunt and parked at the mall structure closest because I remember this being a valet parking only. Maybe they changed it? There were a bunch of spots but the walk isn't bad at all. Literally across diagonally from the restaurant. We got seated immediately. They sat us at a table that was right under the A/C so we asked to move to one of the booths and they had no problem! We got greeted by our server, Bobby, who immediately started conversing with us and taking our drinks and apps order. We already knew what we wanted so we ordered the main course as well. We ordered quite a bit which was fine because they have pretty small portions and their food is definitely good for leftovers. We ordered the iced calamansi juice to start off and it is the BEST I've ever had! It's so simple but super good flavor and made really well. We also got some lumpia and calamari which came really quickly. They were very good and came with a side of atchara which I tried for the first time. It wasn't bad! I love pickled veggies so I thought I'd enjoy it more but I guess I didn't care for it with the food. The main course also came shortly after. We got the garlic fried rice, super good and love that the garlic is so prominent! The pork sisig is my fav. I always try to get it at any Filipino restaurants we go to but this might actually be one of the best pork sisigs I've ever had. Super saucy, lots of flavor, I love the fatty pieces and there's definitely a good kick to it. The Pancit canton was also great, love the thicker noodles, and although I don't care for bistek, my mom and aunt loved it! Now, the star of the menu, the famous whole chicken. I always rave about their chicken like everyone else but I forgot just how amazingly delicious it is. The chicken is super juicy and basically falls off the bone and melts in your mouth. I love a good crispy skin and they have that! The skin on the chicken is my favorite and it is absolutely delicious. Lastly, for dessert, we got a Leche flan to share since we were all pretty stuffed. Classic Filipino Leche flan, super delicious. Shoutout to our waiter, Bobby, though! He was always paying attention and asked if we needed any other food or refills. After we got all our food, he even came back to go through the order list and make sure we received everything! That's extremely nice of him and I loved that. Customer service is everything and his service alone and the food already makes me want to come back. At one point I was staring off in one direction and he paused for a bit thinking I might need something and was trying to get his attention but I looked away and he continued walking away. Their signature Max's chicken is $22 and it's really tiny for its price. They are marked as whole chicken but it's really just spring chicken. All the other food such as sinigang, nilaga, and all that, comes in very small servings as well with a steep price. We did not order the fried chicken. What was I thinking? That's their specialty, and therein lies my biggest mistake. Instead, we ordered chicken adobo, beef caldereta, fresh lumpia and garlic rice. First off, the chicken adobo tasted old and dry--the sauce tasted like it was thickened with corn starch, meaning, not at all juicy like it should be. And it was lukewarm. The caldereta had a nice flavor, and that's about the only dish we enjoyed. The fresh lumpia was smothered with gravy, so it turned soggy. We ate half of it and wasted the rest. Meanwhile, the garlic rice, the most basic comfort food of Filipino culture, was a huge let down--mushy and so not fried as it should be. We finished off with halo-halo. I figured how could I go wrong with that. Thank god! Lastly, the service was very dismal--we were constantly hunting down our server. Luckily, the waiters are in generally good disposition--friendly and humble. And so at the end of the day, my take on it is, being a Sunday didn't help. They were packed and busy and discombobulated. I am disheartened--so let down by this once great brand. But like all other Filipinos, I will likely come back because it's what we do, as a community. When we order for dine in, the plate is bigger, and the food much more than when you order to go. Literally came home and saw that what is supposed to be a full order of kaldereta seems so small. This much is usually how much left over we get to take home after we've eaten it for dine in. It's $18 for this much kaldereta. Why??? Completely felt cheated on. Covid-19 edition: I've actually been here a couple of times since the modifications of restaurants was mandated and realized I never updated my review for it. I first went here when indoor dining was allowed. They use one-time use plates and utensils (poor Mother Earth, we're slowly killing her) and of course less tables are being used. Staff was wearing masks and face coverings and some wore gloves. The menu, as most restaurants I've been to have condensed their menu, just like here. The next time I visited was when only outdoor dining was allowed. This time the wait for a table was much longer, but that could also be because it was prime time for lunch. The setup was in the back of the restaurant/parking lot. There were lights (for night time), a tent which were distanced appropriately, umbrellas, and candles. Again, the menu was condensed and one-time used utensils were given. I think they did their best to make dining al fresco and I appreciated that. Both times (as well as all the times I've been here) dining was pleasant. Even in Covid times they were helpful and they follow Covid protocol. read more

We always order fried chicken, somehow it taste different each time. Sometimes too salty, sometimes just right. Not consistency in quality. We always order online because they won't allow phone orders it seems. When you call, the message will said to send you a link to order on line. People at the cashier are not very friendly and prompt when you pick up order. Repeatedly asking for you name, taking time to check but there were only 2 orders sat there. What I like about Max's is their ability to showcase Filipino food to America. Of course the quality and taste compared to the Philippines is different because of the ingredients' sources. It's like expecting Jollybee to taste the same here as in the motherland. Anyway, I feel they've "Westernized" the dishes so they aren't too salty, too fatty or too exotic of flavors. Some examples are the Kare Kare lacks peanut taste or the Nilaga lacks salt and beef flavor. This isn't bad per say but a Filipino/a who can cook this better at home (*ahem* mom) has much to say. Now I don't come here to eat Filipino food I can make at home. I'm usually here for a party, a family dinner with friends or I'm craving the one thing that reminds me of Max's from the Philippines...the taste of the Max's manok (chicken in Tagalog). It's definitely a go-to here. Try it with Jufran Banana Ketchup or some Mang Tomas sauce if you're new to it. Most of the menu here isn't too bad and is much better than Chow King or the fast food Filipino spots. It was pricey this time around probs inflation. Halo halo was friggin delicious in this heatwave too. Must try. They did some major renovations since the last time I was here. Now they have PLENTY of indoor seating with no outdoor seating. Parking is now valet only $5 (then again I went on a weekend). You can save $$ by parking across the street in the galleria parking lot. Finally stopped in a couple weeks ago on a Saturday for a late lunch. Place was busy but the staff were hustling to keep up and clean up. The Ambiance was a bit loud but it was tolerable. Parking is valet with a $5 service charge. We ordered the Bistek Tagalog, lumpia, garlic fried rice and lechon kawali. Everything was great except for the lumpia...it just had a weird after taste. We came here after visiting a museum in LA. The first thing I noticed was the valet is open again and they charge you $4 dollars to park. After parking you check in by the counter and you will see an iPad to check in. If is not busy they you can just talk to the host. Some of the host can be a bit rude, while others are nice. When the host is ready to sit you, they will ask for your proof of vaccinations. The menu is pretty straight forward. They took out some of the items because of the shortage. I ordered a whole chicken, garlic rice, and sisig. The chicken was good and tasty and same goes for the garlic rice. The sisig was ok. The main highlight here was our server. Her name was Necita. She made our stay here unique and special. She was very caring and she was also very funny. She called us "anak" and this mean my child in Tagalog. She just made us feel welcome while we are here. First experience eating Filipino food, with the exception of lumpias at a potluck before. My boss, who is Filipino, does an annual Christmas lunch and usually picks Filipino food. Parking was easy as it was a lot with valet. We had a group table and my boss just ordered a few popular dishes and we all shared. I got the Calamanis Juice, which is a Philippine Lime juice. It was good but pretty sweet. The table shared the famous fried chicken, fried pork, fried fish (lotsa fried foods), fried lumpia as well as two soups, one peanut based and the other tamarind - which was good but sour and rice as a base. Overall the food was delicious and unhealthy and the service was good. We shared a few desserts as well - good but very sweet! They have a lot of Filipino pride as shown in the decor.
