RRR ordered the grilled turkey BLT ahs like it although he thought the bread was too thick. I ordered the special, chicken on a croissant with cream cheese, cranberry chutney, tomatoes and I forget what else. It was fabulous and could have fed four.. ok, maybe an exaggeration. It was very large. Both sandwiches were served with a choice of side and we both chose fruit salad. The fruit was all fresh, strawberries- pineapple- grapes. The chicken in the sandwiches is cooked in- house and is the STAR! It is tender and they are generous with it. Ithink this is what makes a visit here very worthwhile! Nice place in downtown Crawfordsville for a quick and tasty lunch. The restaurant was quite busy but it was still pretty quick to order and receive our food. We tried two different sandwiches and I was delighted to see fresh fruit as a side option. The Turkey Bravo was a light but filling choiced. I enjoyed the avocado and bravo sauce but would have preferred a different bread (personal choice though). The apple and blue cheese wrap was a unique but delicious choice. Plenty of cheese and really good apples made this wrap a hit. I'd love to come back in the fall and enjoy a bowl of soup - I suspect it would be a great cold weather choice. read more

My wife and I ate here on February 13th for an early Valentine's celebration. The food was excellent. We the special included a charcuterie tray with olives, pepperoni, Brie, two other cheeses and some crackers. This was followed by salads, she had the wedge and I had the berry; both were great. Our mains were scallops for me and a 6oz fillet for her. They were cooked perfectly. We thoroughly enjoyed our meal and will go back. Finally a nice place for date night in Crawfordsville. read more

I know prices have gone up for a lot of places, but your prices have gone up quite a bit and from having food from you very recently your food has gone down as well. The quality of food isn't what it was and also the amount of food has gone down significantly. I think (owner) Hannah's food would stand up against competition in much larger cities. This place is a hidden gem on Green Street in Crawfordsville. The food is so good; I've never had a bad meal there. Sandwiches and wraps come with a side which can be chips or salad or soup. There are lots of really tasty gluten free options. (So many places have zero or one gf option, there are often many to choose from here.). There's a weekly and a daily soup option. They recently doubled the size of their dining room. They've also added evening hours with the regular menu weeknights and a special dinner menu on Friday and Saturday night. Great for date night. Do yourself a favor and stop by. read more

Really good food, sandwiches, salads, wraps and soups. Soups of the day and specials are always amazing--can't go wrong with those selections. Bakery items generally are really good, as long as they're fresh. The only issue is the wait time. Do NOT plan on a quick lunch. I don't know if it's due to being short staffed, but the wait for dine-in or take-away is a quite long. Often I've received orders containing things I've specifically requested to hold (egg or cheese due to allergy). Also note that there is a sign next to the till advising that prices on the menu aren't accurate due to inflation. If you want accurate prices, you'll need to ask. read more

I'm not really from the Crawfordsville area but I had always heard nothing but great things about Maxine's. I'm the ADFS of the Wellbrooke of Crawfordsville, and we do what we call Taste of Town every second Tuesday, so of course I was curious. They answered very quickly and I spoke with Hannah (hope I spelled it correctly!) but not only was she very patient, but was more than accommodating for one week notice to help provide for at least 100! That and she delivered personally and earlier than we had discussed, just wonderful service, the food was amazing, and my residents and staff were so happy. I moved to the area last year but haven't explored many resturaunts yet. Maxine's on Green was on my list of places to go, so after hitting up the Farmer's Marker on Saturday, I walked a few blocks to the resturaunt. They have a really good selection of sandwiches, soups, and salads- I ordered a Hummus and Veggie wrap, with salt and pepper chips and one of the best peanut butter cookies I've had in my life (crispy on the outside, a little soft on the inside, lots of peanut butter flavor!). The total was about $12; I definitely plan to come back, and try their soups next time! This establishment is extremely overrated. Their steaks were horribly under seasoned and overpriced. When visiting Crawfordsville the night before my college graduation, my father wanted to take me (and 8 other Family members) out for a nice steak dinner. We were all having a great time and enjoying our appetizers and drinks. When our main course came out is where it all went downhill. The food looked good, but upon arrival, the orders for my father and my wife were not correct. My father and I ordered the New York Strip as they were entirely out of filet mignon. My order came and was cooked perfectly (although under seasoned). His plate was quite obviously the wrong cut of meat (a ribeye), and my wife's ribeye was the wrong size and temperature ( medium instead of mid-rare). After waiting approximately 15 minutes for the server to return to our table, we were finally able to point out the mistakes. Rather than asking what my wife and father wanted done to correct the issue, the waitress took my father's plate back to the kitchen and spoke with the cook/manager/owner (yes, you read that right). After another 5-10 minutes had passed, and the rest of our party had finished their meals, the server returned to give the cold ribeye which was intended for my wife to her, and my father asked for the bill. To this point he had still not received the meal he ordered, and when the server brought the bill, he was being charged for both of the steaks that were incorrectly prepared, neither of which had been consumed (because who wants cold steak). When my father asked about why he was being charged for the 2 ribeyes, the waitress advised him that the manager had stated that because the steaks were "consumed" that she had to charge us for them. This was untrue as both ribeyes were still sitting on my wife's plate with only a small slice removed from each one. After asking to speak with the manager, she came out, threw the New York strip he had ordered down on the table next to us and proceeded to treat my father with an incredible amount of disrespect. When he stated that he would not pay for steaks that were incorrectly prepared and were not consumed, she called the police. Rather than owning up to her servers mistakes and making it right for the customer, she opted for creating a scene in front of my children. My 8 year old was in tears because she thought that the police were going to arrest her grandfather. After speaking with the police, the cook/manager/owner still refused to make any adjustments to the bill, and my my father was stuck paying for food that was incorrectly prepared and not consumed. read more

Thanks to Yelp reviews, we stopped by Maxine's on Green for breakfast on our way from Bloomington to NW Indiana. Have not spent much time in Crawfordsville and was impressed by the sweet little downtown area with plenty of free parking. Maxine's is a sweet little spot. It wasn't how I pictured it. I thought it was table service and more of a diner, it is not. You order at the counter and they bring the food to your table. We got there just before breakfast service ended. I ordered the ham/egg sandwich and my partner ordered the eggs Benedict. The food was delicious and just the right amount. We didn't feel stuffed afterwards. If we hadn't been on a road trip we may have picked up a few pastries to go. Hopefully next time. The most delightful surprise about Maxine's on Green was chatting with the owner, Hannah Maxine, who was super friendly and our kind of gal. While downtown in Crawfordsville, I stopped by this cafe/pastry shop for a quick bite to go. Since it was mid-morning, I was able to go directly to the counter where I was greeted and told "no rush". I knew I wanted a black coffee and they have a small table with a choice of a house coffee and a dark coffee that is brewed stronger. I grabbed the house from one of those pump dispenser type of carafes. The coffee was hot, but not scalding, so I really appreciated that. They also had a nice display case of pastries along the counter. Though the inventory was reduced due to time of day, they had samples on all the plates, so my choice was not limited. I asked for a blueberry muffin that was large, but not humongous. I got my order to go and the checkout process was quick and easy. The staff was helpful and friendly too! I like that, especially in the morning! After driving a short distance to my destination, I stopped to enjoy my purchases. The muffin was fresh and moist. Lots of blueberries, but not so many that the bottom became soggy and mushy. Really a well balanced muffin. The coffee stayed hot and I really appreciated being able to drink it when I wanted to, not when I could without searing my palate. I ordered the Italian sandwich and was extremely impressed. It was probably the freshest Italian sandwich I have ever had! The ingredients were high quality. I loved the owner's twist of adding a tomato-pesto condiment to the sandwich. It was the perfect addition! My mouth waters just thinking about it. Actually zero stars! The manager/cook/owner is absolutely the worst example I have ever experienced! 2 steaks were brought out wrong and one wasn't even the cut that was ordered! The wrong cut was sent back when the waitress finally came to check on the table. It was never asked of the customer what they wanted to do about the wrong cut/mis cooked steak. The cook just took it upon themselves to start a new steak. By the time the correct one came out, everyone else's in the party of 10 had finished their meals and we told the waitress that we never wanted to have a new one cooked, as a matter of principle with sending anything back to a kitchen! When the bill came, the steak had not been taken off and the manager insisted that we had to pay for it, since it had been cooked??? Then she called the police! I have never ever been treated so poorly by a manager! She was rude, belligerent and would not remove the item, no matter what! I strongly would not recommend going to this restaurant! read more

Wow! Yet another great local business in downtown Cville! I'm glad to report that Maxine's is an excellent new addition to the scene, with fabulous baked goods, and great sandwich lunch options as well. The first thing we tried was the pecan bar and it was pretty much perfect. Lots of toasted pecans, light buttery crust, and (most importantly), not too sweet. On subsequent visits, I've had the Reuben, and the turkey club, and I loved both of them. I was particularly impressed by the Reuben--fantastic corned beef, rich and flavorful. I've also tried some of their cookies--chocolate chip, peanut butter, and oatmeal raisin. All were great, made with real butter and not too sweet. I'm really impressed! It's so great to find a place with delicious artisanal breads and pastries in our town. Plus, I can't get over how cute the space is. We're locals who frequent this place often. If you're a foodie, this is a gem. Her artisan style bakery items always satisfy my sweet tooth, her custom order cakes are beautiful, and she can take orders with fairly short notice. Their menu items are so good, full of flavor, nothing processed. I have a lot of food sensitivities and often feel lousy after eating at restaurants, but not here. The service at lunch time isn't as fast as a fast-food restaurant, obviously, but the food is so fresh and well made, its worth it. They also offer a good stout cup of coffee. Maxine's is an amazing, intimate little jewel in Crawfordsville. I ordered the Waldorf Salad, without the blue cheese crumbles it comes with, as I am lactose intolerant, and balsamic vinaigrette, served on the side. As I sat down at a table, I took in my surroundings. Maxine's is a pleasantly decorated restaurant with a display case of drool-worthy quiches, cookies, brownies, and muffins. My salad was amazing-served in a huge bowl with sliced green apples, fresh and crisp celery, crunchy walnuts, chunks of chicken, grapes, and mixed baby greens, this salad was the best I've ever had-no wilted lettuce, no mushy grapes, no gross and chewy chicken. Nope...not here. And the dressing was a perfect compliment. I'll happily add to the chorus of praise for Maxine's on Green. C-ville needed a place just like this. It needed it for years. And Maxine delivered! At this point, I've had four different sandwiches on the menu, and all of them have top-notch. And even though I don't have much of a sweet-tooth, I find the pastries, cookies, and cakes delicious. This is real food, and Maxine's would hold its own on Mass Ave or in any foodie paradise. Oh yes, and the place is cute, too. Nicely designed, quaint, friendly. I guess my only advice for them is that they do something to make themselves more visible. Right now, you could walk right by and hardly notice them. An awning? A sign? I'm not sure what they need. The staff are absolutely fabulous. As far as the food, nothing particularly blew me away at Maxine's but it fills a niche that Crawfordsville needs: a solid sandwich and soup cafe/bakery. I shared a soup & sandwich combo of a hot turkey and avocado sandwich and chicken dumpling soup with my mom, who ordered the Southwest chicken salad. I have to say, the salad was enormous and colorful. My soup was thick and savory but was unfortunately served tepid, which detracted from the appeal of ordering hot soup on a cold day. My sandwich was flavorful and the bread was thick; I simply made the mistake of expecting a panini/grilled sandwich when it was really just a sandwich made with toasted bread. These small issues did not affect the overall enjoyment of the meal, however, and we both left very satisfied. I would certainly return to Maxine's...and possibly spring for one of the desserts I have heard so much about. Overall a lovely place to get a nice lunch in Crawfordsville. read more

I recommend getting there a little before or after the 12:00 lunch crowd at least until they've been open for a bit longer, as seating is fairly limited. Great, fresh-made bread is exactly what Crawfordsville and its other sandwich shops have been missing! The menu here is very standard deli fare - nothing particularly special or surprising - but a good sandwich starts with good bread, and Maxine's has that! The staff is also so sweet. They were especially sweet to our five-year-old, which means our whole family feels welcome. The space is lovely with nice light and a clean but comfortable feeling. My husband commented that he would like to come in for lunch and stay to work in the afternoon. If they upped their coffee game, I think professors and possibly students would come here to do work. They've already got the baked goods for it! We plan to keep coming back in hopes they will get enough business to diversify their menu. I do wish they had milk or real half and half.
