Tony Bettencourt with Maximum Construction Tony was the one we chose to work with after taking several quotes for our restoration and renovation project of our 1962 Eichler home. Tony gave a reasonable quote, a reasonable timeline for our project, he seemed easygoing, honest, and with overall good vibes. Tony was all of the above. For our 6-month long project renovating our kitchen, bathrooms, extending our AC system, electrical work, replaced all sewage, replaced siding, and replaced plumbing systems, water lines, new tile and appliances in bathrooms and kitchen, replaced walls, etc etc. For our Eichler house, things got tricky sometimes. Tony was always prone to coming up with clever solutions, kept a high-level perspective and suggested improvements that we didn't think or knew of, and kept tabs on the project. Tony is approachable, fun, and a really good guy. He oversaw our roofers, electrician, plumber, HVAC contractor, wall floaters, countertop guy and more - and he worked alongside our landscapers, painters, floor installers in a very professional manner, giving us a lot of advice and pointers along the process. We worked with Tony in our house in San Jose years ago and were very pleased with his work, so when we decided to remodel our kitchen and family room in Livermore, we were very pleased that Tony would come out this way so we could work with him again. We had ideas on what we wanted to do but we wanted to work with a contractor who would come up with ideas/suggestions (within our budget) on his own. Tony listened to what we had in mind and came up with ideas when needed. It was Tony's idea and vision to give us two extra closets in a newly vacated space which has turned out to be one of my favorite parts of our remodel! What can I say about the work done by Tony of Maximum Construction other than it is outstanding in so many ways. The work that Tony and his guys do is top notch, down to the smallest of details that other contractors would never bother with. A few months ago I decided to remodel a bathroom. Thanks to Yelp, I contacted Maximum-Construction and asked for an estimate. Tony, the owner, came out to take a look and suggest options. We remodeled our master bathroom these Do-it-yourselfers bit off a little more than we could chew with whole custom not your cookie cutter bathroom fixtures & tile work. Tony came in & immediately understood what were where trying to achieve and the budget & timeline we needed to stick to. All the custom, tile, granite & glass looks beautiful. Everything works as it should. We have received nothing but compliments on how awesome the finished bathroom looks. While everything was not completed exactly when quoted it was definitely only a day or two behind schedule. Only one hiccup with the granite being cut too big, but that was taken care off & replace with no incident or cost to us. With summer approaching, I was ready to redo my backyard in San Jose. I called 3 landscapers and received 3 different proposals for the project. They seemed unreasonably high, with itemized costs for seemingly unreasonable charges, such as repair of lawn and bushes that may be damaged during the project. Charges for rental of the equipment used to demo the old yard, along with charging for the truck to haul away debris. Tony at Maximum had offered to give me a proposal after I expressed my displeasure with the incoming proposals. I knew his quality of work was excellent, as he had completed two prior projects within the last 9 months, so I gave him a try. Tony's proposal was by far the lowest, and included items that the landscaping companies never included, such as roof and yard drainage pipes under the new pavers. After I accepted his proposal, Tony and I kept in constant contact on the design and construction details. Within 6 weeks, the project was completed with excellence. I had Maximum Construction take out my old concrete, replace with paver. They built a custom outdoor kitchen with gas BBQ, sink, refrigerator and bar top seating. They used care in not damaging any of my lawn or surrounding plants. Again, Tony was able to integrate the demo, the plumber, the electrician, the carpenters, and the masons to bring the project together in a flawless manner. Tony was able to identify construction flaws in my house during the yard construction that he was able to correct mid-stride, without losing time on the project (dry rot, drainage problems, and stucco/flashing work). For the 3rd time, Maximum Construction's work exceeded my expectations. I would certainly recommend Maximum Construction for any job, indoor/outdoor, big or small. They will not disappoint. They were very clean, professional, and knowledgable. There were no surprises during the process since most of what could have gone wrong was clearly explained by Tony before work ever started. I recently hired painters from Maximum Construction to paint my dining room, stairwell, and master bedroom, based on my positive experience with Miguel, who had previously painted my master bathroom remodel. Once again, I was very pleased with their work. Miguel, who oversaw the work, had Enrique and Armando do the painting this time, and José do some drywall patching (from a recent moving of my dining room chandelier to the center of the room). José's patching of the drywall was amazing; the patch is totally indistinguishable from the rest of the drywall. Enrique and Armando spent the first day prepping the walls (spackling, caulking, cleaning, etc.) and painting the ceilings and closets, doors, and trim; they painted the walls on the second day. They did an excellent, meticulous job, and always left the workspace clean at the end of the day. I am thoroughly pleased with the quality of their work! read more

This review for Tony and his crew is LONG overdue. We remodeled our hall bathroom just before Thanksgiving ('12) and Maximum Construction did an excellent job! They finished ahead of schedule, were very professional with good communication and the craftsmanship was beautiful. We now want the rest of the house to look like that bathroom! Tony went out of his way to accommodate our needs and was very patient with small changes. His bid was in the same range as three other contractors, but his work included priming and painting walls while the others didn't. We purchased all materials and on occasion were able to get a 'contractor's discount' at several supply shops around town. But a piece of advice, make sure you have everything he needs by the start date. The crew works quickly and will need materials sooner than you think. I promise, these guys don't disappear when the job gets started and YOU don't want to be the 'hold up' of your own remodel. ;-} Before and after photos have been uploaded if your curious. Maximum Construction came out and gave us a quote to do some work on our kitchen. The estimator seems a little put off that I was planning on doing some of the work myself (installing the cabinets), and I though it was *very* unprofessional when he, mid-conversation, decided to move to the front yard so he could smoke a cigarette, guess he couldn't wait another 2 minutes until we were finished. Regardless, it took them some time to get me back an estimate, BUT the price was fair to me and they were very well reviewed here, so I decided I'd hire them to do the work despite the negative signals I'd received so far. I e-mail them, giving them a start date and they replied, so I *know* they got the message, but did they show up? Nope. Did I ever hear from them again? Nope. Clearly they are too busy to trouble themselves with keeping in contact with customers, or you know, showing up and doing the work. Project has now been finished by another company, and I'm very happy with the results. Due to their poor attitude and lack of responsiveness I simply cannot recommend Maximum construction at all. read more

With Maximum Construction's (MC) help, we recently completed two bath remodels. A friend of ours was doing a major remodel at the same time as we were, and in collecting bids, we found we didn't like the contractors that came to us, for one reason of another. Either their bids were waaaaay too high, or the contractor was playing some sort of game with us, which led us to believe communication would be an issue, and their bid may suddenly sneak up in price. The friend had talked with different contractors, and liked one to the point of almost hiring him when she got the bid of MC. She passed on the name of the one she didn't hire to us. That contractor caused delay after delay, all the while we have our toddler in daycare, paying for days when no one shows up. Meanwhile, MC was doing everything they said they were going to do on the friend's house, on time and on budget. We really wanted to fire the guy we hired and get someone else. My friend's remodel was winding down, and Tony (MC) came to bid on finishing our first bathroom. In one month, we had gone from demo to painted walls, and our current contractor was making it sound like it was going to be at least another two weeks before we could actually have something resembling a usable bathroom. Tony came in, gave us a reasonable bid to finish the first bath, and was able to start the next day on tile. While we were waiting for our bid from Tony (which took all of 24 hours), we were fired by the original contractor because he claimed he didn't bid our job right, and he was too busy working another job that was proving more profitable. Tony came in as he said he would, and in four working days, our bathroom, while not complete, was completely usable. He gave us a bid to demo and remodel the other bathroom. We were not happy with the new bid, so he agreed to work with us on the budget. And what helped us accept the updated bid was that we knew he would show up and do the job. And he did. The second bath was far more extensive, as we were removing one closet and building another, and adding the original closet into the bathroom, and completely rearranging all the plumbing. In three weeks, we got all the way up to a usable bathroom. The only hold up to finishing was the shower door, which they were not installing. And while doing this bathroom, they put the finishing touches on the first. Had we actually stayed with the original contractor, we may have paid less overall for construction, but paid at least double for daycare (which was not cheap). The trade off was worth it to us. Tony even told us if there was a day they would not be there, so I could pull our daughter from daycare that day. The best part, MC is fully licensed and insured. Our original contractor was licensed but not insured, and with the permit caused all kinds of problems with when he could actually be bothered to show up. But with MC, we got quality work, on time, on budget, AND we passed inspection! Another sign that Tony is a stand up guy: During the four days they worked on our first bath, the tile guy accidentally chipped our brand new tub. Tony called me, apologized, and had already called a repair guy to come out, which he paid for in a deduction off our bill. The first contractor shoved a lot of debris down our toilet pipes, which we had to get snaked three times to resolve. He didn't let us know he did that. Tony was completely up front about the issue with the tub. I wasn't even in the house, and he could have tried to hide it, but he didn't. We still have more work to do to our house, and Maximum Construction will be the first one we call. read more

One of the most important things in life to me is customer service. In this day and age of non-brick and mortar companies and big box solutions, great service is about as rare as the california condor. Well, the condor is on the comeback and Tony brings that endangered old-world pride in his business and workmanship. I started my inside remodel project with a competitive bid process, and it quickly became apparent that Maximum was reasonably priced. As part of the bid process, Tony gave me several very helpful design pointers as well. His down to earth yet focused attitude, together with great references and pricing sealed the deal. The scope of my project was pretty big: two bathroom remodels both with reconfiguration, new floors throughout, can lighting throughout, extensive electrical, new kitchen cabinets (same configuration), two closet remodel, wall moving, and more. I am not going to go into a long description of how things went because they went great but I have a couple comments. One: have everything picked out BEFORE Tony shows up because he is fast. If your job is delayed, it is likely because you didn't get your materials sourced and on-site before he showed up to install them. Two: if you need an architect, hire one and have the drawings done and permits in-hand before you start. Again, Tony is fast and if you have everything in place ahead of time, you will be pleased. I really suggest that you invest in drawings and specifics because it will save you frustration and disappointment. I didn't actually experience any of this but only because the scope of my project didn't require an architect. I am completely happy with the outcome of my project and Tony and his crew's work. If you are considering a project I cant recommend Maximum enough. It is so hard to find good contractors and even Diamond certified and Angie's list aren't fool proof. I found Maximum Construction on Yelp and I was not disappointed. Tony is top notch and if you would like a reference, just ask him and I am happy to talk to you. read more

We had another team here to remove and replace two doors, but they found dry rot when they removed the doors and didn't have time to fix it or give us an estimate. So, they boarded up the doorways and left us to figure it out. We lucked out finding Tony and Maximum Construction. Tony sent Frank out that day to give us an estimate on the dry rot removal and repair, and to install the doors. The cost was far better than the first team, and they came out the next day to do the job. The work was well done and the guys were professional and very fast. I'm giving 4 stars instead of 5 only because they left stucco residue on the patio and cement, which we'll need to scrub/repaint. Other than that, we would highly recommend Tony and his team, and we will keep his number handy for future work. read more

Some of the skills that he brings to the table that differentiate him from others are his strong communication and having a large rolodex of talent to help with any task needed. Our home had water damage due to a main sewer line backup outside our house. Dry walls were knocked down in our living room and bathroom in the restoration process, and we were looking for someone to come fix that up ASAP. I called Tony at Maximum Construction on a Friday. He came within 20 minutes of our call, and gave me a detailed description of what will need to be done and sent me an estimate by Sunday morning. I called a couple other contractors, but none of them had even come by yet, so I told Tony I will hire him if he can get the work started first thing on Monday (the next day). He had someone come out on Monday morning before 9am. They were done with the dry wall installation and painting by Tuesday afternoon. They did a great and professional job, and cleaned up after they were done. The only thing I would critique is that the estimate did not have a break down of labor versus materials cost. But the estimate looked reasonable and was below what the insurance company quoted me, so I don't think it was a big deal in this case. read more

I have a personal referral from a past client. I have a large remodeling project, but he cannot be BOTHERED to set up an appointment.
