This is a super fun restaurant in downtown Elkhorn. We were very pleasantly surprised to stumble on it after a yoga class nearby! We arrived at around 1:45 on a Sunday, so it looked like they had been busy but were clearing out by the time we arrived. There was an outdoor patio, an indoor heated patio, and an indoor seating area. I definitely want to come back this summer to sit outdoors with an icy margarita. The indoor patio was heated and a few people were sitting outside but we opted for indoors. The decor was beautiful, I loved all the bright colors, the movie posters, the big and small plants, and the colorful paper banners. I ordered a lime margarita, blended with salt, and my husband ordered the same but on the rocks. We both agreed the margarita was too sweet, I'd probably opt for a different drink next time. We got chips and salsa to start and could choose between corn, flour, or a mix of chips. I liked the corn chips best, they were fresh and minimally salty. The salsa was so good! Not too spicy, and it came with an avocado salsa which was also fresh and had chunks of onion. I ordered a shrimp taco and had the choice of corn or flour tortilla and soft, hard, or fried shell. I opted for the fried flour shell. I also ordered a pork tamal, which came with mole on the side. I really enjoyed both things I ordered, and loved the addition of the mole sauce! Would never have thought Elkhorn would be the place to go for fantastic tacos! Each one was delicious and tasted as fresh as they could be. They even provided a side of mole thy was very good! I also had a beef tamale and that was delicious too. I very much enjoyed each item and would be more than happy coming back in the summer to sit outside and have some more! We had a great experience here! I visited with my mom and sister after a girl's afternoon. The flour tortilla chips are an absolute must order. The margaritas are tasty, but not the best you'll ever have. Each of our meals was delicious, especially my BBQ enchiladas, which were a surprising favorite. Maximo's Cantina is a cute place in downtown Elkhorn that is comfortable, with kind service , and pretty dang good food based on two experiences several years apart. On this occasion, we stopped by because we happened to be in the area. Gotta say that the prices were shockingly high. I know restaurants are having a difficult time, but $16+ for guacamole and about $14 for 4 stuffed jalapeños? I don't know if they're good because we aren't paying that. We did pay $4.40 for chips and salsa to start. The chips were spot on. You get two salsas, one is a regular red salsa which was great. The other is a creamy, onion, avocado dip which was out of this world. I wanted more (and the recipe, please!). For an entree, we shared the Enchiladas de Res, with shredded beef and verde topping. You get two enchiladas with beans, rice, and a small handful of lettuce. Oh my. Very flavorful overall! The beef was moist, oh it was good. I have been a fan for many years, and last night was my first time back since the summer of 2023. I was shocked by the prices. If you look at pictures of the menu from four years ago, you'll see that prices have doubled for the same food and portion sizes, which are not inline compared to other places. The prices definitely need to be examined. I understand that things are more expensive now than they were four years ago, and I could accept a 20-30% increase, but a 70-100% increase is unwarranted. $10.99 to $21? read more

We met my brother and sister-in-law here for a weekend lunch a few weeks ago. I don't get out to Elkhorn much so this was a nice treat. The inside was super cute and festive. I had a cheese and onion enchilada with a choice of red or green sauce. I chose red but the sauce was more like a mole sauce that I wasn't crazy about. I ate the whole thing, just not my favorite. I also had a carne asada taco a la carte. I had a choice of hard or soft tortilla and fried or not fried. I went for the hard fried but should have opted for the soft not fried like the taco trucks have. It was crispy and hard to eat and soon after my RA started to flare up possibly due to the oils used to fry. That was on me making a bad choice. Our server was attentive to our table and really fantastic. I ordered a flan for dessert and she brought extra spoons so everyone could have a bite if they wanted. The flan was to die for!!!! One of my favorite restaurants. Love this place. The food & service is great. Many of the negative reviews I read are that prices are expensive. One complaint even stated that Maximo's has "mediocre food at fancy resturant prices". Huh? If you pull up the dinner menu, all entrees are in the $20s. Had a late night softball game and stopped in Friday night for some quality food and great reverse happy hour that was from 8 to close. The service was fantastic and we really enjoy this place. My friends and I went for a late lunch to Maximo's in Elkhorn. I ordered a BBQ chicken enchilada and a side of fries. The food arrives and my fries were missing from my order. I explain and request my fries are missing and the man goes back to get them ordered and made. Mid-meal, I go to take a bite and as I'm eating my food I bit something hard. Stopped in here for the first time last week. It's a cute spot in the heart of Old Towne Elkhorn and right on the main drag. The food was pretty good. We ordered the cheese dip, that has small bits of peppers in it, which isn't always well received, but it was good. There were not enough chips for the large order. I ordered the fajitas and the lunch portion was definitely on the small side and I did have to ask for the tortillas. Overall the food is good. It is pricey, compared to other 'authentic' Mexican spots. The service was really slow, and there were not a lot of other tables so we were a little frustrated. All in all if you're looking for a long lunch type of spot in a cute atmosphere this is a great pick. read more

We had a very good experience at Maximo's. First, the service was exceptional. As this was the first visit for both my wife and me, our waitress was very helpful with recommendations, including a drink that wasn't even on the menu. Spicy margarita with Tajin on the rim. It was delicious! The food was good. If you have ever read any of my reviews for Mexican restaurants, you know that I get a little picky with certain things like beans and rice. I grew up in Phoenix, AZ and I always compare everything to the Sonoran style Mexican food I grew up with. Let me tell you, their beans and rice are on point! I ordered pinto beans and the rice didn't have a bunch of vegetables in it! Perfect! Note to other Mexican restaurants: stop putting peas and carrots in your rice! OK, I'll stop. The chips and salsa were great. The bring out "regular" salsa and an incredible avocado salsa. I ordered the enchiladas del mar and my wife ordered a fish taco and a carne asada taco. The enchiladas were fantastic and the tacos were ok. Nothing bad, they were just a little boring. Honestly, the only thing keeping this from a 5-star review was the prices. Mexican food. Taco meat was seasoned with a different flavor. It was good, just different. We had the chips and queso. It was okay for the price. I had the chicken enchiladas with green sauce. Chicken was good, a bit dry, but the sauce helped. The rice and beans were good as well. My daughter had the Salchipulpos and all my kids loved the fries. Really good French fries!! The hot dog was closer to a sausage in taste. The look was fun and my picky daughter ate pretty much all of it. My son got the chicken quesadilla and he ate that. I do not like paying for kool aid. It's a bit pricey. I had a burrito smothered the wife had some nachos and the kid had an enchilada. We all had water and I tried one margarita. We did try the churros for dessert. We didn't save the leftovers and the churros were so hard you could barely eat them. Bill with tip was $135. We enjoyed our dinner experience here but it wasn't anything to write home about. It was pretty good food. Main complaint was due to lack of indoor seating we had to sit outside and the flies were AWFUL! Another table actually requested to have the waiter leave the fly swatter at the table. I definitely understand the challenge of managing the flies but other restaurants operate outdoor seating and have far fewer issues. Unfortunately that part of the experience may have taken from the actually culinary part of it. We will be back to give it a shot, but maybe not in a huge hurry. read more

We went here on Friday night. We have been to Maximo's a number of times over the last few years. It has consistently good food. The flavors are a little more authentic than the average Mexican restaurant. I especially like the red (mole) enchilada sauce. The beans are very good also. I wish they would step up their drink menu and options. The bar options are lacking a bit. The prices have gone up quite a bit since i was there last. I know many restaurants have raised their prices and Maximos has been a slightly higher price point than other Mexican restaurants, but I think they over did it a bit. Most meals are $21. I would like to see that go down $2-3. Can't say i won't be back, but for that price it will be less often. read more

Located in the older downtown area of Elkhorn, you will see Maximo's Cantina Restaurant. I usually don't visit this area of Elkhorn and thought I would order take-out and compare with my favorite Mexican restaurants in the Omaha area. I ordered 2 carne asada tacos and asked for a side of pinto beans and salsa. The salsa ended up being unnecessary since the tacos will come with a container of hot sauce to pour on the meat, which makes a big difference. The steak flavoring was not pronounced with lime juice as my 'go to' carne asada restaurant in La Vista but it was decent and flavorful. The beans were actually good and not from a commercial can taste. The salsa is not strong and probably for those who have a weakness for spicy. I would definitely return but would try out their breakfast items, since they open early for breakfast unlike other Mexican restaurants. read more

I live near here so I'm so excited to have found a good Mexican joint that I can walk to. It was a gorgeous night so I decided to walk up after dinner for a drink and a dessert. What a good decision! I was able to sit on the patio, which was cozy and welcoming. I would definitely recommend asking for a seat outside when weather permits. The service was slow and I'm pretty sure she forgot about us at least once, but we weren't in a hurry and weren't put out by it. I ordered a frozen raspberry margarita which was nice and strong, and really good. The ice wasn't blended very well, making the straw useless, but they sugared the rim which is a huge plus for me (serving a sweet margarita with a salted rim is so gross!). After my drink I ordered the Fried Ice Cream to share with the table and let me tell you...it was AWESOME. Like, I loved it! I've seen fried ice cream on other menus and never ordered it, now I feel like I've wasted years of my life that I could have been eating this delicious dessert. 100% can't wait to come back and have dinner. read more

Great little Mexican restaurant with very friendly staff. They get a lot of their produce local from Mt. Michael high school just down the road. We've eaten here at least 100 times and it is our go to place for Mexican, especially when the weather is nice and we can enjoy the patio. I recommend the nachos, lunch burrito and the skinny margaritas (they aren't as sweet). The only item I don't recommend is the fried flour taco. All other tacos are great. Most people don't know how good of a brunch place this is on Saturday and Sunday. They even have plenty of regular breakfast items for the Gringos. Pro tip #1: you won't see mimosas or Deb's Mexican coffee on the menu but all you have to do is ask. You will not be disappointed with her Mexican coffee. I promise. Pro tip #2: also, not on the menu is Chilaquiles. Some wait staff might not know what it is either but when they ask Deb she'll make sure Max (or his mom) will make it for you. If you've never had chilaquiles, then you should try them. Think breakfast nachos. If you have had them and like them, you have to order them here. You will not be disappointed. Better than we get in Mexico. I order them like this: "chilaquiles with green sauce, pork carnitas and 2 eggs over easy." They are typically pretty spicy and enough for two. Not cheap but worth it. Dividing by two makes it reasonable. read more

11/10/18 This is another restaurant that we were introduced to via the Daily Deal Breakfast Card. We have been to Maximo's Cantina twice over a six-month period. Maximo's Cantina is located in Elkhorn NE, a small-town just west of Omaha that has a couple of other restaurants that we enjoy. It has the décor of a Mexican cantina. The staff is very friendly and attentive. Their Bloody Mary's are simple but good and are still a good way to start the day off. On our first visit Lois had their Pancakes with a side of crispy bacon. I ordered their Mexican Omelet made with Mexican chorizo, peppers, onions, diced tomatoes and served with a side of guacamole, hash browns and rice. I also had a side of floppy bacon. On the second visit she chose their Build Your Own Omelet - cheese, ham and sausage with a side of crispy bacon. I once again ordered their Mexican Omelet, but this time the sides were Pinto beans and Mexican potatoes fried potatoes covered in a sauce. I thought it was delicious, but it is definitely an individual choice. If Lois had it, she would have said it was way too spicy. I'd say if you think that a mild salsa is on the spicy side, then the Mexican potatoes are not for you. On both visits the meals were cooked perfectly and served hot. Maximo's Cantina is becoming one of our favorite breakfast stops. read more
