It's a haircut. Given the reviews/stars, perhaps I went in with lofty expectations. Nice people. For what you get, it feels over-priced. $30 for something you can get at Great Clips. I've tried to steer away from $100 salon prices as I've gotten older. But I'd be willing to pay more for a more-solid experience. Diane F., not sure how to reply to your comment or to you directly. I have been coming to Maxim Barbers now for about 4 or 5 months, and each time I have been satisfied with how my hair looks after. Misty is such a wonderful person; she will hook you up with a good haircut for sure. This time I got my haircut by Chris, who is new there, and the haircut is excellent. Chris takes his time and makes sure you are satisfied with the end product. He will give you updates to make sure you are happy at each step of the haircut. Great place to get a haircut, shave with straight edge, wax, shampoo.. really whatever it is you're looking for I'm sure they can do it. Mixed. I knew when I started going here to have Jay get my beard in order that they didn't take appointments. This is a fact that has always bothered me, but I put up with it because the treatment Jay gives when grooming your beard is unlike any I have found elsewhere. It is a multi-step process that takes 45-60mins and that's just for a proper trim and razor line, NOT a full shave. I am a little shocked and surprised that this day in age places can still exist that don't take appointments. Not even that they still exist but people are actively opening with this business model. I get the idea of slowing down a bit in this modern age but also who really wants to sit around and wait an hour or two for a haircut or shave? The shop is not set up for that. It is not a place where one gathers with their buddies or strangers and chats it up all day. As great as Jay's work is, I just can't continue to waste all this time waiting to get lined up. Best barbershop in ATL!!! I know it's in my neighborhood and maybe that makes me a little biased but the owner and staff have been consistently amazing from day one. This is a no frills establishment that delivers warmth and courtesy beyond the haircut. While Dennis is my preferred barber, i've never been dissatisfied with haircuts from the entire staff. I have and will continue to refer friends and acquaintances alike to this shop and many have become regular clients. Meg is a wonderful addition to the already stellar cast, making sure that every customer is greeted with a smile, sometimes photographed for before/after results and made to feel welcome in the shop. Normally we like Maxim and some of them have a done great job for my husband. I brought my son in for a haircut, his hair was long and he wanted it trimmed up. We showed a picture and discussed what he wanted, i thought it was all very clear. It was however cut very short, butchered and just nothing at all that we asked for. The back is the same length as the top and it should have been shorter, the sideburns are cut strangely, the top was chopped up a lot and no longer long and parted to the side, the front was cut way above the eyebrows almost totally straight so you can't even brush it the side. It's very upsetting, looks like a round helmet. I won't bring him back. We did pay and left politely. I am having to go somewhere to get it fixed, things aren't even in the back it it just sticks up. read more

This is my first time writing a review on Yelp, and my fantastic experience Maxim Barbers surely warrants it. Given that I have become a lot more conscious about the quality of the haircut I get, I asked around my friends in the Emory community for the best place to get a standard haircut around the neighborhood. Many of them recommended Maxim, and what I found most interesting was that all of those who recommended it said that they didn't have a favourite, go-to barber in this barbershop. I signed up as I entered, and within minutes, I was called by Dennis for my turn; my experience with Dennis was very pleasant, he is a very easy person to talk to, needless to say the haircut, shampoo, and the neck shave were thoroughly enjoyable. I've been going to Maxim since it was founded, and there is no better barber shop in the metro area. I've had my hair cut by three different members of the staff (Diane, Misty, and Dennis) and they were all attentive and extremely capable; and now I can say that I've also had a straight razor shave (from Charles), so Maxim's really is the full package: the service and quality of an old-timey barber shop coupled with the innovation and style of the modern world. With incredible staff, impeccable service, and irresistible charm, Maxim Barbers simply can't be beat. I first started going to the shop that would become Maxim back when it was still Axiom and Diane, the current owner of Maxim, was working there. She gave me an incredible haircut and I knew that I would be back time and time again, and I was so happy when she took over the operations and turned Axiom into Maxim. Since then, I've also gotten my hair cut by Misty and by Dennis. They possessed the same remarkable skill and attentiveness of Diane: if someone is cutting hair at Maxim, you can be sure that they know their stuff. Dennis has since become my main barber and I could not be more satisfied with his skill, his creativity, and most of all, his friendship. Dennis is the ideal barber: chatty when you want to talk, quiet when you don't, and always bursting with great ideas for how to make my hair look its best. I can sit down and give him an idea of how I'd like my hair to look, and he immediately sets to work helping me figure out how to adapt the desired look to my face and hair type. Thanks to Dennis' expertise, I've tried out various hair styles and have never had a bad haircut. This effort to combine the desires of the client with the expertise of the barber is a hallmark of Maxim; the shop practically resounds with excited voices working together to come up with fun and good looking styles. In fact, the only thing heard more often in Maxim are the happy greetings between longtime barbers and their satisfied clients. Frankly, the huge number of return clients and the low turnover rate for barbers is probably the highest endorsement Maxim can receive. Recently, I had the opportunity to get a straight razor shave at Maxim, courtesy of Charles. It was, without a doubt, the most pleasant and relaxing shave I have ever received. Charles was careful and precise, and my skin has never been smoother or better looking. While a full shave is a great way to build confidence before a big date or a job interview, I would also recommend it just as a "treat" - I went away feeling completely relaxed and looking great. As far as I'm concerned, absolutely the best place to get a haircut in Decatur, if not the entire Atlanta Metro. The crew at Maxim made me feel so welcome when I moved here a year ago, and I always look forward to my next visit. While I mainly sit for Diane or Jay, Misty and Dennis have also barbered me and all four are exceptionally skilled in giving clean, precise, stylish cuts at a very reasonable cost. Best barbers and best value around. I've had 5 different barbers from this shop cut my hair and they've all crushed it. I have my favorite but I won't share the name since I don't want to wait behind other requests . Best value anywhere at $20. They take cards, but prefer cash, which I'm happy to bring since they keep prices low. I've consistently had worse cuts I've paid $35 for at American barbers (they're awful). Come check it out, just not when I'm there! Update: cuts are now $25, but they include a neck shave (previously a $5 upgrade). read more

I've been going to this barbershop for some time, and for the longest it seemed as though they actually cared about their customers. Recently, I feel that this has changed. When one of your longtime customers comes in to a "walk-in" barbershop 15 minutes before you close and you turn them away when there are 5 to 7 employees at their stations and no waiting customers, it speaks very poorly about your business. My NYC barber has been the only barber to touch my hair for the past few years, and now that I'm in Atlanta for the summer, I couldn't avoid a haircut forever. I figured I would visit my old barber from college here in Atlanta, but I found out he closed his place. I love yelp for most things, but finding a barber is just not a search I enjoy at all. Thank goodness I found Maxim. What a fantastic barbershop. Great, beautiful decor (though perhaps I'm just used to seeing tiny nyc barbershops), but filled with talented barbers as well. The owner of the shop, Diane, was sweet, fun to talk with, and wow she can do a great cut. I have been coming to Maxim for years for my haircuts, making the trip down from Gwinnett county with my son to see Misty. When I say Misty is an artist, I am not exaggerating. She always gives me exactly what I ask for, with a consistent quality that doesn't leave room for any complaints. She is fantastic with my kid, letting him be silly and a little wiggly while still making sure he looks great at the end of the cut. I am usually a fan of efficiency, but I have waited over an hour at Maxim during their busiest times to make sure that I got in to see Misty, it's worth it. Misty's fades are so good, they might be directly responsible for my second child. Everyone on staff is warm, friendly, and efficient. The prices are beyond reasonable, and the quality of haircut is the best I've experienced in the Atlanta area. You should go here. read more

This place is hit or miss Vaughn was a spectacular barber but he's not working with them anymore. John messed up my hairline twice, I'm not going back. Very disappointed. My first time going there. Went for a simply shave. Arrived at 9:10am. Waited for 40 mins. Kept telling me that somebody will be with me shortly but I kept looking others being served. Not sure why. I finally left and didn't get an apology or comment whatsoever. Can't love this place more. It's the "Cheers" of barber shops. I showed up before 10 am and people were waiting for it to open. That's the type of place this is. The staff enjoy being there, know and enjoy the customers and the customers seem happy to be there. Sure that kind of dedicated and loyal customer base means they get busy and there is a wait. Popped in at lunch time on Thursday and only had to wait a few minutes. Can't remember the name of the guy who cut my hair, but he was friendly and professional and did a great job. Love that they include both a neck shave and shampoo at the end. So you get rid of all the annoying bits on your neck and also all the annoying bits leftover from a scissor cut. Easy to get to shop on E Ponce in Decatur. Prices are fair, especially since the regular cut includes a wash and condition. My biggest complaint about Maxim is they are walk in only. They have 6 Barbers, but if you're dropping in on a Saturday, you may wait more than 30 mins to get in a chair, longer if you want a specific barber. Everyone seemed friendly and good at what they do, I just likely won't come back since I can't make an appointment. read more

ASK FOR DENNIS! I am speaking for my boyfriend bc he isn't going to post a review but when he came home after his haircut I couldn't keep my hands off him! It looked perfect! I'm the one that has told him how to cut his hair after years of dating and he loves the style (faded bottom to top, hard part, longer at the top but faded into the rest) I was so impressed bc I'm the one that knows about cuts and style. I only give 4 stars bc he went one time before and when he described and showed pictures of what he wanted, the cut was terrible. The guy clearly didn't know how to fade properly so there was a noticeable line where the hair got longer. Dennis knew exactly what to do. Pretty basic cut so shouldn't be out of the ordinary.
