My wife and I bought a house today!
By that I mean, we saved for years, looked at house for months, finally found one, made an offer, got it accepted, got it inspected, sent 1,345,3u1 pieces of paper to the bank for a mortgage and yeah that was a u! Not a typo, it was just that nuts. AND, today we signed all the last bits and pieces and it is done. We own a house. So we wanted to celebrate and so we decided to go here, to Max Chop house. A restaurant I have often heard praised as one of Rochesters best!
And it was the singularly, most disappointing meal, I have ever eaten.
Now maybe the build up over the years contributed but I don't really think so.
So let's walk it through.
We arrived and were promptly seated by the bartender since there was no hostess. Ok. Odd for a high end place and there was some confusion as he tried to talk to us from 25 feet down the bar but we after taking a small tour of the restaurant he unconfidently sat us back where we started.
Our server came over, she was very stiff and unpersonable. She had no personality and if I found out she was a robot I would slowly nod my head.
I watched as 3 mini bottles of coke were poured into 2 glasses for us. Not a complaint as much as I found it odd and evidence of how long it has been since this place has been updated.
So we order. A crab cake appetizer, a strip steak and potatoes and finally a salmon dish. And it was all pretty much all crap. My wife said the potatoes were decent....
The crab cakes were WAY over cooked otherwise they were bland but not bad per se.
The steak was the blandest piece of meat I have ever eaten. The only flavor came from the copious amounts of steak sauce poured all over it, which we did not ask them to do, and it was so cold the truffle butter that came with it wouldn't even melt! A truck stop can make a better steak, Hell, Demnys probably makes a better steak. The potatoes were lyonnaise style which is a very simple preparation of thin panfried potatoes with butter onion and parsley. These.....were not those. They were small wedges, there was onion but there was also some mustard?ish sauce on them. I dunno but they were not as advertised.
Lastly the salmon, not only poorly designed and poorly executed, it was just bad. A bed of farro, a grain, with little flavor itself and imo poor mouth feel, along with some tomatoes which I believe were suppose to be blistered but were not, Moroccan spices of which we tasted none, the undercooked salmon itself and a tasteless and visually unappealing, baby crap green, yogurt sauce that added nothing. And by the way, much to our shock, they served *u*it cold even though neither the menu nor the waitress thought that relevant enough to mention. If you have an entree, listed under entrees and its served chilled. Let the customer know for God a sake. And by the way I lived in Morocco and this had no sense of anything I ever ate there.
All of this added together, came out to be both the worst choice I have ever made in a restaurant and a $115 mistake at that.
There was literally only 1 good thing I can say about our meal. They had decent rolls. Though we thought it odd they had a young man whose sole job seamed to be to deliver said rolls instead of just giving us a basket. Maybe they think it makes them classy? The honey/red hot butter that came with them was ok, but I would have like to been given the choice or both that and normal butter. All things considered, its not really important given how this meal went. read more
