Mavis Discount Tires is awesome. Yesterday, 1/28 I had a dead battery. I got a jump start & went to Mavis in Hazlet to check out the battery. I had purchased it from them on 9/2/25. I went there & Andrew kept the car for 90 min & the battery was fine. His mechanic took me right away. Also, there was no charge for this visit. James is nice also. This company is such a scam. You call your local store and your call is answered by a call center which immediately turns the conversation into a salesman that will say anything to close a sale. After arriving, the store has no idea you were coming and you have no idea why they had no idea you were coming. Then you find out the person you spoke to doesnt work on aftermarket wheels. "Tim" or whoever doesn't work on location although they knew exactly what you needed. He closed the sale and got me on a deposit. From their policies to their customer service,.. oh, Matt from customer service is a gem. His snide remarks will have your blood pressure soaring. I went for an oil change. It takes them 1 hours so I figured while their waiting for the oil to drain they could install an air filter and box filter. My car came out in 1 hour and they charged me $182.00 for installing the 2 filters which I bought myself.. I was furious because they didn't tell me there was a charge and I called 1 hour before my appointment to let them know I had the filters. So what a rip off. Good bye Mavis read more

I had an appointment to get a tire alignment and tires. They are trying to talk me out of the tire alignment because it was $20 a tire then when they came outside just by looking at it, they said it needs and struts because it's bowing. After talking to an out-of-state mechanic friend of mine, he says you can't tell just by looking at a new car. I sent him a picture he said he needs to see it on a lift. From the bottom that angle tells him nothing else the same angle they were looking. Will be getting a second opinion, and getting tires and the balance somewhere else. read more

I was told less than 5 min before my car would go into the shop, and it took more than 15. Was told tire rotation would be less than 15, took over 30. Person rotating my tires was texting someone in between removing lug nuts. Took forever and they very much under estimated the turnaround time. Nice guys, but they definitely don't give accurate estimations on how long things are going to take. read more

He left me the option of leaving my car, with no way home, in the rain, and they would try to "get to it" on Monday. I pointed out that I work and I would need my car. If I could give this establishment no stars, I would. Minus stars even. Do you know that stereotype about the crooked mechanic who charges you for things that aren't broken? You will meet them here. Buyer beware! And watch out for the constant upsell too. Read on only if you have time for the whole story! I got a flat tire and pulled off into the Staples parking lot on Route 35 in Hazlet. "Luckily" there was a Mavis Tire Center in the same parking lot. As I had gotten my last set of tires at Mavis in East Brunswick, I had no qualms going over to this one and asking them to fix my tires. The mechanic points out that the other side has a bald tire and the two front tires were pretty close to bald. All true, so far so good. They have run flats in stock and can fix it by tomorrow morning. They are going to put 4 Bridgestone Turanza EL400 run flats at $190/ea. on my Toyota Sienna. Google on my phone says it's $160 at Walmart and $120 at TireRack.com. It's pretty much price gouging but I'm between a rock and a hard place and I say go ahead. They try to upsell me an alignment but I'm actually going into the dealer the next week for a bunch of work including an alignment so I say no thank you. The next day they call to say my tire pressure gauge is broken...well it wasn't broken when I got there because the tire light on the dash was not on before I got the flat and it came immediately on after I heard the "pop" so that's kind of suspect. It's $99 plus labor to fix that. And then the mechanic tells me my shocks are leaking and that the dealership should never let me drive around like that. I say no thank you anyways. When I get there to pick up my vehicle which in all fairness they did get done by the specified time, the mechanic tells me I need two new struts too. (I already knew I needed one (not two!), the one that I'm taking it to the dealer to fix the next week already...) and reiterated that my shocks are leaking badly. I don't trust these guys at all so again I say no. When I get to my dealer, I tell my service advisor all about my experience and the shocks that are supposedly leaking. He says that didn't come up on my last visit last month but he would check them to make sure. Later that day he texts me pictures of the spotless shocks! And yes only one strut needs replacing. AND there was another broken tire gauge, that looks like it was broken during the tire installation! So watch out for unscrupulous mechanics at Mavis in Hazlet!! Take the drive to the Mavis is East Brunswick if you have to go to Mavis. read more

Beware of unnecessary repairs or replacement recommendations! I had dropped my vehicle off to have 4 new tires installed and a wheel alignment done. I was called an hour later that my brake pads were 85% worn and that they recommended replacing. I opted out of having them replaced. The next day I took my vehicle to my local mechanic and was told there was still 8mm thickness left on them and they did not need replacing. If I could put NEGATIVE STARS, I would. Visit 1: Went here for two new tires and brake pads in December. By the time we walked out of there, we went In, they said we needed new brakes and rotors, had it done - picked it up to head down to DC for a biz trip the next day and had to immediately turn around on the parkway because if felt like the tires were falling off (VISIT 2) Apparently they had to rebalance the tires bc It was done incorrectly (at the admission of the mechanics). I want to also note when I went back in there two additional customers were bringing their car BACK with complaints. Felt bad for the unhappy customers but sorta felt better that I wasn't the only one, which certainly validates this review. Visit 3: Two weeks later, had to bring it back due to vibration when depressing the brakes, they claimed it was the FRONT break pads (they had replaced the back) somehow they must have missed that the first time. So they replaced the front brake pads. Visit 4: Got the car back, still shaking. I'm dreading going back but now I make right hand turns and it is grumbling - again, something not right - looks like I'm headed back tomorrow. Maybe I should wait to post this to see what happens but I just need to put this out there - DO NOT GO TO THEM. We are over 2200.00 in and this 2015 Nissan Pathfinder is still driving like crap since I took it here. BUYER BEWARE. Edited to update outcome on visit 4: diagnosis from Mavis (on paper) that my 2015 Nissan Pathfinder needs a new FRONT differential. Have diagnosis on paper and everything. Quoted me labor of 5 hours @ 160.00 plus part, which they would attempt to find in after-market, they said they had made a few calls but none were available yet. They recommended however to see if it was covered by warrantee before we proceeded. When I called Nissan they said to bring it in for a check. Went to Nissan to have the car checked and they apparently diagnosed it as a REAR differential, and stated that my Nissan doesn't even HAVE A front differential at all. In summary - these guys are diagnosing things that doesn't exist! How can that even happen? I have the paperwork to back this all up, too. DO NOT GO HERE. read more

Horrible service. Came here at 8 am. For 2 tires. Said I also needed tie rods and back brakes. Should have said no to that but too late now. No explanation as to why it's taking so long. They process people who are waiting for their cars ahead of people who have scheduled appointments, is what I was told. Couldn't answer when my vehicle would be serviced bc the Walk-Ins had priority. I asked for my keys. More talking that I didn't care for anymore. I asked for my keys again and told I was being rude. What is the point in making an appointment if your vehicle will not be serviced at the scheduled time ? Please don't be rude like me by having to repeatedly ask for your keys so you can leave. read more

This was the worst experience I have ever had at a mechanic. Go to the Hazlet, NJ location at your own risk. I left very unsatisfied and my car was left in worse shape after 5 visits in two weeks, complaining to 4-5 different managers because the previous managers were "no longer with the company", taking an extra 4 1/2 hours away from my family, and still ended up spending almost $1000 to have my car not feel as good on the road. Staff in the waiting room were very unprofessional. A temp manager trying to force food on to a child when the mother was saying no multiple times. Mechanics live streaming a dance party on top of their tools in the garage. When the mechanics forgot to do a basic service after rotating my tires, i had to wait two days to go back for them to not completely fix it. So i came back a third time and explained that the situation still persisted. They brought me into the garage to essentially show me how dumb I was and that nothing was really wrong BUT that now, all of a sudden, I have a different issue with my tire area. I complained yet again about how do I have yet another issue that was not spotted before after they have been working in that same spot for days. I cannot proof it but I am convinced they broke my car more. The assistant manager at the time said he will call the regional and to come back in two days. Come back and yet again another manager gone. No one talked to the regional manager and now I will look the jerk because I have to explain myself to a 5 person. Had to come back a 5th time for them to fix the new problem but my original problem, that they definitely caused, is still persisting. The best they could do was give me a discount on the service to fix something I pretty sure they broke too. read more

Horrible service from Gino! Sltopped into Mavis Tire in Hazlet on a Tuesday, Gino told me he would order two front tires for my my Mercedes special order. I told Gino there was a sense of urgency since some of the metal was showing through on one of my tires. He said it would take a couple days to get them in. I did not receie a call back so I called on Thursday. Gino proceeded to tell me he never ordered the tires and made up some story about needing my credit card in order to order the tires. I told him I will go to another place to get the tires. Myself or my family and friends will never return. , I wasted 2 days dealing with this shop. Stay away! read more

This has been the worst experience I have ever had getting a simple oil change. I've been waiting for almost 2 hours and my car is just sitting there. The people who work there are the slowest working people I have ever seen in my life. I would advise no one to go there and for sure I will never be back. I would rather drive an hour to get an oil change then go back to Mavis which is 5 min from my home. I would put no stars if I could. My experience was HOOORRRIBLE. 0 STARS. Crooked Chris, mgr. attempted overcharging for service. Please read on it gets worse. Scheduled my appointment to have the front strut assemblies and rear shocks replace, and alignment. I purchased STRUTS AND SHOCKS myself due to the fact Mavis could not get the parts I needed. I bring car in @ 11:00 am. and while speaking w/ the store manager, He tried to sell me parts that were not needed. Then asks: " Has anyone quoted you a price yet" ( MAVIS HAS A SET PER HOUR LABOR CHARGE) Then gives me this high amount and states" this is what it could cost because i will have a hard time getting the knuckle off, I have done to this week" Being that the assemblies were replaced not to long ago I knew this wasn't true. He also states" your car should be done in by 2 or 3 pm. I give him my cell phone info. to contact me when car is finished. 4;30 pm I decide to call Mavis, speak w/ Chris and he states I tried calling you 5 times (lie) and you need a control arm assembly because we could not get it together because the ball joint keeps spinning and the car won't be ready until tomorrow because my supplier is closed and cannot get the part until then. I state" How did you get it off" No response. " I need my car I have no ride" Chris" You can get an UBER and we will reimberse you" David" How about a loner from enterprise" Chris" No They are closed, I need to call My owner to see what can be done" I get a call from the owner and am told we have a rental for you from Enterprise and you can pick it up, but you need to get there by 5:pm ( I guess they were not closed @ 4;30pm). The next day I call Mavis and Chris states" Car is ready and the price is $1100 and some odd dollars, David" You damaged the Control arm ball joint while removing it, I am not paying for that repair". I contact Mavis customer service am transferred to the Mgr of Store mgrs. Matt O. and he immediately begins arguing with me about repairs needed. I tried to explain the situation and he still keeps talking over me. Some comments made via Matt:Your just trying not to pay you bill" Your car is old" "You agreed to the price" I am the top Guy there is no one higher" I will be happy to meet you in court" We will take the part off and you can call a tow truck and tow it somewhere else to have it repaired" Finally he stops arguing and listens. I ask" How much is the cost per hour?" $125, "How many hours did you work on Car? 3.5hrs. = $437.50. I ask " Then why is he charging me over $1100. Again Matt States" you agreed to the price" I state" There is no written or verbal agreement, You can't charge one customer one price and another customer another price, That is Unethical, Illegal and immoral. Finally after almost 1/2 hour of back and forth Mgr. Matt O gives me a Repair cost and states "this is take it or leave it or we will remove the part and you need to tow it and have it fixed elsewhere and you agree not to take further action" I stated" I will pay the amount to get my car out of your garage". THE CAR STILL ISN'T FIXED PROPERLY In a Nutshell: They were unprofessional even @ Corporate level, Overcharging, Damaged Existing Parts, Did not call, Dishonest throughout the entire process. Thx Mavis for this HOOORRIBLE experience. P.S. So much for no further action!! read more

I'm pretty sure the person who worked on my car had no idea what they were doing at least initially. They admitted the person was inexperienced but he was in charge of it since he diagnosed the problem initially. I had to have my rear struts replaced because the car is old and they were leaking. The strut's top hat strut bolts are accessed behind the back seat but it looks like they tried to go through the trunk for no reason - put a giant rip in the trunk liner, left one of the hooked in the side of trunk lying on the ground, and left the scissor jack cover lying on the trunk floor too. The sway bar end links were seized/rusted (as would be expected in a car that old) so they did replace them free of charge but only because they broke them trying to remove the strut. If they're rusted have the sense to go gentle on them! And they never put the strut boot/bellows back on! It's debatable if they really make a significant difference in the life of the strut, but still unprofessional since the ones the car came with were still in good condition. 4 new say bar end links but minus 4 strut boots = about even. They were nice enough to accommodate my request for KYB (it's a Honda) rather than Monroe to their credit They set my expectations to have the car the same day and I knew that was definitely possible. I waited 6 hrs until after they closed with no way to get home. They did give me ride home to their credit, but I had to spend more money to get back to pick up the car. They offered me free oil changes but I do those myself so I asked for a power steering flush since that's the only fluid maintenance the car needed - which they did without telling me they were going to charge for. Big disappointment. If this was a relatively new car I would probably drop even more stars for this review, but I am not too bothered by the cosmetic issues on an old car. Their price can't be beat as far as I can tell in this area. The dealership was charging more than double to fix it, and Pep Boys across the street was also rip off. All mechanics/auto shops are rip offs and this one is no exception. The most definitive nice thing I have to say about this auto center is that they're less of a rip off than all the other ones by a significant margin. If you can fix your car yourself - do it. You'll save literally hundreds to thousands of dollars even if you have to buy a lot of tools to get the job done. Overall, this was an okay experience at best, but not surprisingly reinforced my dislike of auto shops. The business model of all shops is designed to screw customers over and overcharge. UPDATE: I was looking through my trunk again and found several loose fasteners strewn throughout the trunk. Did a horrible of job putting the liner back together, and it wasn't even necessary to remove the liner to do the struts. Definitely will not come to this particular Mavis ever again. What a great bunch of guys at Mavis, long story short (at least as short as I can make it) . I had my 2007 Toyota Tacoma in on Friday for a set of rear Yokohama Geolander tires which I ordered through their main Mavis directory. I brought my truck in , they quickly checked it in acknowledging my tires were there and they installed them within a half hour. When I got my truck home (mind you it was dark already) I realized they were the wrong Geolander model and I called them back and spoke to Wayne who apologized (although it was a mix up from the main office directory sales. We worked out which model was suppose to be ordered and I was allowed to drive the installed tires with no hassles. The tire I wanted the Geolander go-15 was out of stock but a few days later Wayne and Guy hustled the tires from a different vendor and called to have me come in and have the right tires Installed ! I tried this place as a recommendation and an never able to get an appointment at my dealership. I scheduled an appointment for an oil change online the night before with no issues. The gentleman at the front desk was very courteous and helpful. I gave him a lot of credit as he took a phone call from someone who was yelling and screaming (I could hear him through the phone!) He conducted himself incredibly professional! It was very busy here today and I originally anticipated my car to be delayed but it was finished earlier than I expected and the cost was much cheaper than I thought!
